as long as its a good machine with some good games, I don't give a rat's ass what they call the sucker I sort of agree but I still will feel a little awkward buying a counsel named Wii...
At least people won't have any trouble memorizing the name for Wii...

"Again? What it is called?"
"Wii."

Sony-
Playstation
Playstation 2
Playstation 3 (not the most creative idea eh?)
Microsoft-
Xbox
Xbox360 (the same...what does the 360 actually entail?)
With Wii, it has loads of different meanings:
Wii = Wi-fi
Wii = Logo is representing two controllers i i .
Wii = We, as in , "we are going to change gaming", "we are going to do..."
Hell, wee, I use that word to describe small things. "That wee shop" "that wee lad" etc And the console is pretty small anyway.
So personally...I don't mind it. Hell look at "iPod", and now, that's a household name. :S
'Revolution' was a good name...but really, it only had one dimension.
Loads of stomach's turned when the controller was introduced, but now...those turned stomachs have turned into interested faces...I can imagine the same to happen to Wii.
Personally I thought Nintendo 64 was a terrible name, and looking at the controller, thought it was not gonna go far.....
Ironically, I believe N64 did much better outside of Japan, and it was international business that got the console extra legs.
Vic_Rattlehead

Yeah, N64 made history! I think Lylat Wars has to be one of my favourite games. I just wish Nintendo went back to full ship/sub/tank fighting, instead of all this Running around rubbish.
The StarFox series isn't Starfox without the damn arwings in full use!

I agree completely. I said something similar at a different forum. In fact, because I'm lazy, I'm going to copy and paste what I posted there.
_____________________________________________
Wii = we = us. Sort of a way of saying, this is the console for the rest of us. Those who don't want to spend 20 hours killing aliens in a shooter, or 40 hours fighting rival boss number 74 in a RPG. Instant satisfaction with Wii's games, since you just jump in and wave the controller around.
Also, Revolution was a boring name. Like with the Gamecube. Imagine if the thing was called Dolphin after all? :/
Revolution was describing what they were trying to pull off with the system, Wii is something different to catch attention. It's also easy to pronounce regardless of what nationality you are.
Lastly.. look at the names for the other consoles. PlayStation 3. XBOX 360. Nintendo DS. PlayStation Portable. They're very straight to the point, we're telling you what it is. No surprises. With wii, it's something unusual, something you'd like to find out more about.
It's a good choice for Nintendo. Especially since from the beginning, they've said they were striving for something different.

Oh my God that’s going to be a marketing disaster. The name isn't going to attract Casual gamers. In American or any English speaking country the sound Wii kind of has a bad connotation. I know about the sound you make when you’re having fun "WEEEEEEEE!!!" but what about the penis connotation. Remember the name for a small kid’s penis is wee-wee. It’s going to be really funny because you know it’s going to be small.
Nintendo- Look at our new entertainment machine...... The Wii
Interviewer- Wow it’s really small :eyepop:
Nintendo- Yes but remember what they say big things come in small packages :innocent:
Interviewer- Well show us how to play with it :joytear:
Nintendo- Well you can grab the wand and wave it and yell Wii
The competition will have a field day with the name Wii is going to be so damn easy to make funny of.
"Why don’t you go play with your little Wii-Wii while I play with my big old PS3"
I’m still going to buy one some day down the road when they make a Zelda for it.

I think it is a very stupid name. They say the name means something like all that "we" crap, but NO ONE could figure that out if it wasn't spelled out for them. Really would any of you have thought it was a good name without the explanation? A name should not require explanation since it is a name. Besides that, every time I see the name I want to pronounce it "wye" since that seems to best match the phonetics (to me, since I haven't really studied pronunciation).
I think the worst thing is I just feel stupid saying the word like that.

Revolution at least sounded intelligent. If you look, it is an actually revolution for video games in general.
The remote controller, and the ability to play a backlog of 20+ years of nintendo games cannot be overlooked. These are the most original steps forward in the video game world i have seen in the last six years. While playing old games on a new console doesn't seem like that big a deal, it is when they offer an entire library of every nintendo game made (exceptions are made) to those who purchase the console at minimal costs. The remote has a chance to make companies rethink the standard d-pad plus analog sticks configuration...

Saying the word, "Wii" makes me feel stupid and immature. I will simply not recognize the word "Wii" and continue to refer to it as "Revolution" much like I did 10 years ago, with the "Ultra 64." Damn, the Ultra 64 was a badass name.
I'm not just going to ignore the existance of the Wii entirely, however, as I would like to play Earthbound on a TV again, and my computer is too big and heavy to move.

I don't see how this is surprising to anyone... the Gamecube was codename: Dolphin once upon a time. Revolution was a very pretentious name, since there is no way to revolutionize the gaming industry as a whole now that the major consoles have settled into their niches. Playing with a remote is nothing new, playing a bunch of old games definitely isn't a revolution. Wii as a people will buy it, regardless of the name, because Wii know what Nintendo delivers. Wii will get a ton of advertisement, and the games on the Wii will prove to be the deciding factor in whether or not Wii get the new Nintendo Wii.
Wii will, Wii will, rock you!

Do you know why Nintendo has done this? I'll TELL you why.
Nintendo wants everyone to play with their Wii.
People can marvel at the small and portable size of their Japan-made Wii.
Nintendo wants everyone to fear their Mighty Wii, for it is a powerful Wii after all.
The Revolution is The Wii
Everyone will want a piece of The Wii.
Nintendo's going to Wii on all the other console makers.
The Wii will dominate.
Wii is the sound you'll make when playing with their Wii.

Oh my God that’s going to be a marketing disaster.
Actually, it's brilliant marketing. Nintendo has finally realized that they can get away with any kind of gimmicky or quirky crap, because people will chalk it up as "Nintendo being Nintendo" (I love how Nintendo has convinced people that they're not a business, and they only want to have fun). It's their new trend. People have come to expect it.
That said, Wii is a lame name, even if it is original. But as long as Nintendo keeps their products fun and functional, I'll keep buying them.

I guess some of you people just don't get it. Wii is just a crappy name. I know if you’re a console lover like me you really don't care about the name but if you’re a casual undecided gamer looking for a console then the name Wii just want capture your attention and pull you in.
PS3 - this name carries pure prestige. Sony knows nobody cares about the names and that they only care about the games. So reusing the Playstation name over again is no problem.
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/710/power1gk.jpg
Xbox 360 - This name is just pure marketing garbage.(I like the Xbox this is just about the name) It's like they were in a board room and some on asked what's an edgy name and some on look at a skateboarding magazine as saw 360. It’s kind of like when people make games and then make a sequel and just throw Extreme on the end of it.
Wii - This name as Meaning behind it but when you hear it just has no pull to it. It just doesn’t catch your attention. When I here Wii I don't thing Nintendo. It’s just kind of Bland. It doesn't even sound like a word. Wii just doesn't convey the Prestige of Nintendo like Revolution did.
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2233/revolution9fa.jpg
Here are three statements that everyone makes and see if they sound right.
PS3 - "Hey, Do you want to go play my Playstation"
Xbox 360 - "Hey, Do you want to play my 360"
Wii - "Hey, Do you want to go play my Wii"

The video game market is much different than any other.
Even the casual gamer won't shun an entire system because of the name, especially when it's a Nintendo consol. The brand name alone is enough to sell consols to casual and hardcore gamers alike. And hell, X-Box is a lame name (not as lame as Wii, but still), but it took off.

I was always surprised that back when the 64 was on the verge of death, they came out with the different colored versions, and suddenly had a spike in sales. It was like "The 64? Nah, that's a piece of crap. Look at the Dreamcast and PS2! Huh? The 64 comes in orange? I want one."

Check this out;
Because we don’t believe that Wii is the real name. We think Nintendo is setting you all up to be Punk’d at E3, generating a massive amount of positive buzz when the scam and the real new name are announced.
Crazy? Here is the first clue, “By letting the gaming community vent now about the name, they will be less distracted as launch titles for the system are announced and initial reports about what it’s like to play the games begin to come in.” Allowing your audience time to vent is not SOP in a name announcement, and also telegraphs that Nintendo knows what a stinker this name would be. Second, it’s not possible to engineer a worse name for this product.
Third, and this is a big one, there are no trademarks registered by Nintendo nor by any dummy corp in the U.S or over there for Wii. This is unprecedented for Nintendo and it is not possible that this is an oversight. If Wii were the name, they would have registered it. In fact, no new trademarks have been registered by Nintendo at all. This leads us to conclude that Nintendo has in fact registered the real name under a dummy corp, which is SOP when trying to keep a name a secret prior to launch.
Given that their video game audience is the same demographic as Punk’d, this whole campaign is perversely elegant. Except of course for failing to make the illusion complete by registering a TM for Wii.
Keep in mind, this whole PR campaign cost zero dollars. And yet, some “naming experts” just don’t seem to get it.

More still, is why they mention its 'name' now...and not E3,
Even if it's not true, I'm sure they may change the name in English speaking countries, once they realise it's a slang word for many English meanings etc.
Much like, Sega Genesis - Sega Megadrive
Super Famicon - Super NES
And then there's the assortment of games, like Bare Knuckle - Streets of Rage etc.
But regardless, I'll get one.

Sony is doing that with the PS3. Well, it’s not about the name though it’s more about the Price. The Price as been ranging form $500 to $1000. This Creates negative buzz and then when they release the price everyone’s like Wow I cant believe this the PS3 was way cheaper that I thought it was. There for turning the negative buzz (That Sony Started) :liar: into positive buzz.

I'm sure Nintendo's going to have some great games on it, and in the end, that's really what matters, right? Of course, I'm on the look out for titles for both the Revolution/Wii and PS3 to see if they'll be worth a purchase immediately or if I should wait until I see what they really have to deliver.
