View Full Version : Tv suggestions for those of you in Japan

Are you in Japan? Do you agree with Azrael's opinion that Japanese TV is the equivelent of eating sharp balls of tin foil, and painfully pushing it through your rectum, only to have a midget come and shove it right back up, then proceeding to attack you with a glass bat? (Disclaimer : Not verbatim )

Well then have I got the thread for you! Those of you in japan for the last two years or so, may not know about some of the good new TV shows that are being made. So, I propose that all of us in the land of "freedom" (Freedom-not-granted-to,Blacks-hispanics-germans-communists-homosexuals
-women-non-christians-jews-mormons-buddhists-hindu-muslims-liberals-
and-turnips) help tell them what to download!

You can get these show via BITTorrent, where, I don't know. I propose that anyone with a show to offer, offer it. Please, no anime, they can get it over there (Not to mention the majority of it *cough sucks *cough).

A great new show that has recently hit the airwaves is, a remake of that other fantastic show, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA! It is actually, really fucking good, and is being called by more then one critic, from more then one magazine (Yes, that's the clincher), the best show on television. If you can, download it, and bathe in it's awesome!

Two other shows I suggest you check out are the Stargate shows. Stargate-SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. These fabulous shows can be yours for free, as long as you use BITTorrent, or have someone give them to you. (The best part about them is that they're filmed in canada, which is almost a guarenteed awesome).

Another show is Firefly (Yes, it's the sci-fi lineup on friday, but they finally took the only sci-fi shows worth watching (that are still being made, save firefly). However, you may want to keep your eyes peeled for the Firefly movie, that should be released soon, if you watch the show, since the show doesn't really have an ending.

The 4400, The forty-four-hundred is an amazing series about people abducted by assholes from the future, and given crazy ass powers. Watch them fight the U.S. government, as only they can.

Thats the Drama/Scifi I suggest. I love them all.

For comedy, I suggest:

The Daily show with Jon Stewert. God I love you Jon Stewert, please help our people get more people to like us after The passion of the Christ. A very funny slant on the news in america, keeps you up to date. My favorite two segments are: "This week in god." and "Gay-Watch." (If you can't tell, I'm a dirty, dirty, liberal >=D )

South park, no explanation needed (However, I hear you can watch that in Japan, don't know about the new episodes though)

Family guy, IT'S BACK! IT'S BACK! THEY'VE BROUGHT IT BACK! AND IT'S MORE GLORIOUS THEN EVER! PRAISE MY AVATAR!

American Dad. Made by (and voiced) by the exact same man who does Family guy. One wonderful Seth McFarlan, who, despite his name, is also jewish. Ah wha? Yes, he said it himself (as far as I can remember, in that adult swim special anywho, he might've been kidding)

Venture Brothers. A very clever and witty farce on the old Hanna-Barbara cartoon, Johnny quest. It's great, and anyday now the second season should come to be. (It did get renewed as far as I understand, but I don't know what the delay is)

Monk, A very funny show about a obsessive compulsive detective, that is also crazy. Imagine that man in Japan, he'd be on the ground rocking himself back and forth.

For crazy ass shit that's just off the wall crazy:
Nip/Tuck WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? Is that plastic surgeon having sex with his patient not three hours after enlarging her already humongous breasts? And why does that guy look so much like Michael Jackson? Yes my friends, this is a show about plastic surgery, and from what I hear from my Doctor of a father, plastic surgeons are that slutty.

And a non-japanese cartoon:
Justice League Unlimited. I don't actually watch this enough, but from what I do watch I can say, that it is actually.... good. It takes place in that neato universe, and it's really about superman and his buddies fighting the U.S. Government (At this point).

And two things I don't suggest you watch, are: 24, and the Fox News.

Fuck you 24, and your sensationalism bullshit about "terrorism" I am tired of this god damn retarded show. I've had someone tell me "But it's a little scary knowing that this could actually happen, terrorist cells are all over america, you know." WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? Why for a second would you believe a Television show, made by FOX! It's one plot twist after another, and it's retarded. How many times can the same man save the United stats? Instead of decent writing, they just say the three golden words "Bomb, terrorist, America" for the entire show, and people apperently watch it thinking that yes, this is what america is like these days. No, forget that we haven't seen any terrorist activity in how long? Sigh...

And, the Fox news. They actually lie, and I hate them, and they are awful, awful people. However, i don't think you can watch that there, and the type of people who put programs on the internet probably aren't the kind to watch this.

Feel free to give more shows everyone, and while people are inclined to agree and disagree with other people about what is good and what isn't, don't let it escelate into an all out flame war. And please, have an opinion to back up your accusation, don't say things like "JUSTIC LEAGUE IS GHEY CAUSE IT'S NOT JAPANESE." Or I will come to your house, and drown your flowers.

Edit : Typos and a disclaimer (Something I should have had the intelligence to put up in the first place)

I just got cable (since it's in my building and my exposure is not good for satellite). Even their cable sucks. I've got about 5 channels that are all showing golf or Japanese baseball, a bunch of financial and news channels, and then FOX (WHICH HAS CHOSEN NOT TO BROADCAST BILINGUALLY) a couple of movie channels (bilingual or subtitled) History Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, and CNN. All this (WOW) for a mere 3000 yen per month and I'm supposed to pay like 25,000 yen to NHK (but there's no penalty for not paying so I think I will choose that option, like so many Japanese).

So, things are pretty lame and my Japanese won't improve as much since I previously watched everything in Japanese. But it is nice to get CNN and to watch some English television now and then. My coworker gets all his stuff recorded by his parents and then sent over. He's getting his parents TIVO for Christmas so he can burn CDs via the Internet of shows that he wants to watch. That's how desperate some people become for American television...

You actually paid for it at one point ?

Nope, never paid- even though NHK came around collecting- my daughter was home and just pretended she couldn't speak any Japanese...

True story.

My friend, who spoke very little Japanese, had interesting battles with the NHK guy. He lived in the 5th floor of an apartment complex with no elevators, so it was quite a Stair Trek to get up there.

1st Time
NHK Guy: (in Japanese) Good evening Sir, I'm here on behalf of NHK...
Friend: (In English) Sorry, I don't speak Japanese.
NHK Guy: Ah...ok....

2nd Time
NHK Guy: (in Japanese) I'm here on behalf of NHK. Here. *gives him English language pamphlets*
Friend: (In bad Russian accent) I'm sorry comrade, I don't speak English.
NHK Guy: Ah, ok...

3rd Time
NHK Guy: ....Here. *hands my friend pamphlets in English, Russian, French, and German*
Friend: (In English) Thanks, but I don't have a TV (the TV is obviously playing in the background)
NHK Guy: Ah, ok.

And he never came back after that.

Well, I suppose I'll be fine as long as you don't summon your students to attempt to kancho me to death. But yes, I hate 24, I admit it. I probably stand alone in my opinion too.

NHK guy? Do they have someone manually collect the fees?

erbiumfiber
08-29-2005, 02:41 AM
Yes. They do have people come around from time to time to attempt fee collection. But there was a big scandal at NHK last year and now no one (Japanese or gaijin) appears to be paying. There are no fines if you don't pay, they can't send you a bill apparently so it's the "honor system." And we all know how well THAT works...

erbiumfiber
08-29-2005, 02:45 AM
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention. NHK sucks. I mean, even more than other Japanese channels. I would say that, other than the 7PM bilingual news and sumo, I'm always watching something else. I might pay for one of the other (commercial) channels, a couple of them (whatever is on channels 6 and 10 in Tokyo) I will occasionally watch. Like this show where they fix up old Japanese houses and you get to see how awful the "before" conditions were.

So, yeah, you're not exactly INSPIRED to contribute to NHK...

Azrael
08-29-2005, 02:53 AM
Yeah, the Before and After show is kind of interesting. I could do without the obligatory geinoujin panel, of course. I like Ainori a lot, and I would watch Ururun, but again, I just can't stand the peanut gallery. "Here, why don't you take some stupid quiz no one cares about!"

There's a show that comes on late Tuesday nights though where they bring on three girls, and present them with "Sweet Woman/Harsh Woman" scenarios and have them pick what they'd do, as well as how a panel of 100 Japanese guys responded to it. It's interesting to see how frequently (infrequently) my opinions match up with Japanese guys.

Joe
08-29-2005, 03:01 AM
So the NHK thing is just a channel you pay for then? And they can't bill you? They might do well to take a lesson from comcast and cut the cable.

Az - Care to give a few examples where your opinions differed?

erbiumfiber
08-29-2005, 03:04 AM
No, no, no. NHK is BROADCAST...unscrambled. Anyone can get it anywhere in Japan. Before I got cable, I still had NHK...

And that's what makes it so ludicrous to think that anyone is going to be paying for it when they're giving it away...

Joe
08-29-2005, 03:08 AM
Ah, I was under the impression it was a channel, or collection of some. Like the stars pack (12 channels for the price of 3? How can I lose!?)

And speaking of obligatory panels, has anyone seen the iron chef panel? Jesus tap dancing christ, "I feel that this soup you have made can re-balance my chi, and I sense that it will one day bring world peace to a small group of ants located under my chair."

Am I the only one who thinks that they might just be winging it? Or are they really sincere? Perhaps on some shrooms?

It's like PBS but instead of being funded through taxes, endowments and telethons, people are suppose to pay straight out of their pocket

Tell me; do you have to pay to watch Pride FC, K-1, and Shooto events? I'm a sucker for "martial arts", and can't get away from such programs. Boxing got kind of old for me, even if the contenders are most likely built better than most K-1 contenders.

On television here in the U.S., though, I can't say I'm interested, besides some particular episodes of shows like "Family Guy", "Law and Order", or "Monk"...and I guess "24" is OK, and becuase I'm into the shows in the former paragraph, "Alias" is off of my list. Usually I catch these shows when my sister's are watching, however.

Joe

Alias is supposed to be good if you're into the spies thing. It has a cult following, I know that much.

My impression of Alias was that it was good the first few seasons, then tanked MAJORLY (Zombies? WTF!?)

*laments* Why oh why did they cancel Dead Like Me? Just as it was getting good too!

Its a TV show. Its not their fault people take it as completely literal. Though while I am on the subject, how do you know there aren't terrorists cells in America? Are you a government agent, privy to that kind of knowledge? I think its a bit naive to assume there aren't any terrorists in America simply because its been a while since their last attck. And also, the show is about a COUNTER TERRORIST UNIT, so of course the show is going to be about terrorism.

You've made an enemy in me.

And in me, though I am sure you could not care less ^^;;
