Checking your email for updates requires the same amount of effort as checking the site.

The number of hits would go down with a mailing list, and it'd just be more work. :D

well, when you check your mail, you can see mails from others at the same time. When you check the page, you're taking the same amount of time to do just one thing. So it saves time.

as for the stats... I can't argue with you there. But what he decides to do will ultimately show what his priorities are... either quality or quantity in visitors.

for someone who just diabled the post counts, it'll be a little hypercritical if he cares about the number of his visitors more than the quality of their visits.
