*Lebron James for NBA MVP. He's gotten so much better within the last three years it's crazy, and he put Cleveland Cavaliers on the fourth spot for Eastern Conference playoffs. Cavs would be a lottery team without James.
*Atlanta Braves have been winning their games thanks to their offense, not their pitching? This is something I expected to happen sooner, when the Cy Young winning pitchers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and other talented pitchers moved on. Smoltz hasn't been good, but it's only the first month of baseball. The fact that Mets is doing well proves that.
*Manchester United on a nine-game winning streak, and may catch up to Chelsea. Then I hear that Michael Ballack from Germany may be joining Chelsea.... :gloomy:

How embarrassing. A draw to the bottom-by-a-large-margin side. :gloomy:
Ah well, the title was Chelsea's anyway, but at least we get free entry into next year's Champions League. :D

Have to give the compliments for the Sunderland's goalie, then. Just read the recap, and it's not like Manchester played poorly, they just couldn't score. And I'm pretty sure Sunderland is happy about the draw, especially if they are to be demoted to second tier. Still, after a slow start, Man U are wrapping up their season on a high note, the draw not withstanding.
Red Sox has been doing well, no doubt, but Yankees have been slow. The fact that Beckett and Schilling pitched well is impressive, and Big Papi is doing well too.
NBA playoff next week. Oh boy oh boy. Spurs for the win.

NBA playoff next week. Oh boy oh boy. Spurs for the win.
Not if they play like they did against Orlando last night.
My prediction - Detroit gets the title back. They seem very determined this year and have the home court.

Well, Tim Duncan has been struggling due to an injury, they did not have Manu Ginobili playing, and Orlando has been the hottest team in NBA right now- if they had a week more, they would've made playoff ahead of Bulls, 76ers or Bucks, who do not deserve to be in the playoffs. I still favor Spurs to win the West against Dallas or Phoenix.
Detroit has a very good team, and certainly a contender- I wonder how they will do against Heat, whom they went all the way down to 7 games last year. That would be the matchup to watch. It would depend on how well Shaq and Dwayne Wade play, and Heat has a very good, if inconsistent team.

Detroit's played pretty well against Miami this year and I think won't have as much trouble as they did last year if they shouls meet. The team that scares me more in the East is New Jersey.
I kind of figured it was something like that with the San Antonio/Orlando game. Detroit lost to Toronto tonight, a team that had lost 10 straight, but they played their reserves a ton, including the end of the game when it was within a point with 12 seconds left.
I think it will be a Detroit/San Antonio rematch which the network people dread, but should be a good matchup.
Personally, I would rather have Detroit/San Antonio match, than seeing Kobe having success in the playoffs. Detroit and San Antonio may not have flashy players like Kobe, but they play as a team and get their work done, in a blue collar sorta way. The fact that they are evenly matched, though Detroit won the regular season games, would make things... interesting, not to mention repeating the matchup from last year.
New Jersey has been playing well, but... the reason that San Antonio/Detroit play well in playoff is due to their defense, and NJ doesn't seem to be a team with great defensive scheme, though the same can be said of Phoenix.

After that draw with Sunderland, if Liverpool wins at Blackburn later today then anything could happen. Man Utd always finishes the season strongly though, so I'm not keeping my hopes too high.
As long as Chelsea doesn't lose more than once and finish two games in a draw or better, they get the title regardless of what the Reds can do.

I was referring to the statement that Man Utd will get automatic Champions League group stage qualification. The title is already mathematically out of Liverpool's hands.
Yeah, the race for that second automatic qualification spot is NOT over. We need to keep finishing the season strongly.
Oh snap!
I just remembered, gyoza... we've got a game in hand over Liverpool. So even if we win the remaining games and lose to Chelsea, we've got second and automatic Champions League qualification. :D

Lebron shouldn't get the MVP. He still chokes in the 4th quarter and plays lax defense.
If the lakers didn't have Kobe Bryant, they would also be a lottery team. Are we forgetting the 81 points? He did that shooting 60%. He's clearly the most dangerous player in the league, and he meets all the invisible criteria for MVP - his team is in the playoffs, he's having the best season of his career, most of his team is having career years and he has the ability to single handedly influence the outcome of a game.
Lebron makes more field goals in the fourth quarter, single possession (meaning there's only one shot left before the game is over) than anybody else in the league, Kobe included. Kobe had a great season, no doubt, but he doesn't make his teammates better the way Lebron does. And though 'Bron can work on his defense, it's not like Kobe is the best defensive player either. Furthermore, Kobe scoring like crazy doesn't mean the team will do well- the 81 points game was against Toronto Raptors, and it was a close game until Kobe let it out on the fourth quarter.
Also, LA Lakers without Kobe probably would beat Cleveland without Lebron day in, day out. They both would be lottery teams without Kobe or Lebron, but I have to say Lebron is the better team player without hogging the ball.
Most Valuable Player is a subjective award anyway. Even if you are a great player like Kevin Garnett, if your team does not make the playoffs, you are not gonna win it, most likely.
I still can't believe the Sunderland draw.
I still can't fucking believe we drew to Blunderland either.
I don't actually think they're all that bad a team - merely disallusioned with the big time. They proved in the draw that they can keep up with the best of the Premiership; all they have to do is say fuck it and throw caution to the winds.
I was actually rooting for Man Utd to win the title since I hate Chelsea with a passion, but since it looks out of their hands I now want them to get 3rd :D
Not gonna happen. We've caught up on games now and we're 6 points ahead. With 3 games to go, we're not going to give away that much of a lead. :D
I think Sunderland was looking for a draw in the first place, and worked on their defense rather than their offense. As good a team Man U is, if the opponent is concentrating their efforts on a draw, it's gonna be hard for them to score.
Did Ruud play though?
Well, they beat Tottenham today, with my man assisting a goal... :D

Lebron makes more field goals in the fourth quarter, single possession (meaning there's only one shot left before the game is over) than anybody else in the league, Kobe included. Kobe had a great season, no doubt, but he doesn't make his teammates better the way Lebron does.
Sounds to me like you're regurgitating the same bullshit everyone else does when they talk about sports, but don't have their own opinion. So kobe doesn't make his teammates better? Why is that exactly, because Lebron averages 2.whatever more assists than he does? I would love to see your stats on this, because I remember lebron choking nonstop in the begining of the season up until about a few months ago.
Have you watched a lakers game when Kobe goes out, and the offense slows down because Kobe's presence isn't felt? Are you going to tell me that someone who warrants an auto double team/triple team isn't making his teamates better by drawing attention away? You going to then tell me he's a bad passer and shoots everytime he touches the ball?
And though 'Bron can work on his defense, it's not like Kobe is the best defensive player either.
It's been three years. Where is the improvement? Kobe Bryant has been on the all defensive team 4 times throughout his career.
Furthermore, Kobe scoring like crazy doesn't mean the team will do well- the 81 points game was against Toronto Raptors, and it was a close game until Kobe let it out on the fourth quarter.
Actually, it does. I dug up some stats concerning this. The lakers are 16-9 when kobe scores 40+. A 65% win rate is solid no matter how you look at it.
Also, it was a "close" game because the lakers were down by 18 points in the third quarter. You must consider stalling, while watching one player light up your entire team as "close".
Close isn't going +18 points to -18 points.
Also, LA Lakers without Kobe probably would beat Cleveland without Lebron day in, day out.
Uhh, that isn't relevant to anything. You claimed that since they would be a lottery team without him, it means he's a good candidate for MVP.
They both would be lottery teams without Kobe or Lebron, but I have to say Lebron is the better team player without hogging the ball.
Hogs the ball eh? Let me punch a gaping whole in your argument. You know why lebron averages more assist per game than Kobe does? His teammates convert passes more often. I've watched the majority of the laker games this season, and if Kobe didn't have to chuck up shots with the clock winding down or had teammates who made open shots, his assist average would be up and his shooting % would be astronomical.
Also, Lebron plays in a soft conference.
Most Valuable Player is a subjective award anyway. Even if you are a great player like Kevin Garnett, if your team does not make the playoffs, you are not gonna win it, most likely.
This also isn't relevant. You claimed Lebron *should* be MVP, not who you think everyone else will vote for. I've named a number of reasons why Kobe would be a much better candidate than he is.
Dude, all I want to talk about is some general sports issue, not having a fucking debate over it. The people at ESPN will do that for me. I've got my reasons to believe Lebron deserves the MVP, while you got Kobe as your man. Let's leave it at that. What's you problem, trying to pick a fight?

Apparently, he is.
I think the Habs (Montreal Canadiens) will go far, seeing they've got two very good goaltenders, Cristobal Huet and David Aebischer.
Mikka Kiprusoff and Jarome Iginla ARE the Calgary Flames; the entire team highly depend on them both, they're the only reason the Flames are going into the playoffs. Without them, they'd end up like the Winnipeg Jets back in the 1980-1981 Season (their worst franchise record of 9-57-14).

There's no damn "intellectual policy" involved. State your reasons and move on. It's just your opinion. And last time I checked, opinions are not necessarily facts.
Now back to the thread. March (and beginning of April) 2006 will forever live in infamy in my personal records. It was a poor time for all the sports teams I care passionately about. Team Korea failed to beat Japan when it actually counted in the World Baseball Classic. And the Duke men's basketball team failed miserably, not even making it to the Final Four. Fuck, I really needed something to celebrate on campus. If that weren't bad enough, the fuckin Duke women's basketball team lost in the finals to Maryland, whom we've beaten in almost every encounter. And the damn lacrosse team had to get their dicks in an inappropriate place. Goddamnit >_<...
Hopefully Korea will do well in the World Cup.

Clarification of your own opinion : I'm not contesting the poster's choice of MVP. His opinion is entirely up to him to form, however when they admit it's based on ignorance I stop taking it seriously. If he was to build an actual case supported with facts and logic, i'd be all for it even if I disagree. (Which I do). Stating general preference for ham can't be debated. My opinion isn't subjective. It's objective. Lebron doesn't play defense. His team plays against other soft teams, and his teammates can hit open shots. Those are facts. The east is populated with 2 strong teams, a couple mediocre ones and then a slew of horrible ones. The west is solid all the way to the 10th slot. (Seatle, NO and UTAH would clean up in the east)
What would be subjective is saying Kobe is the only true candidate for MVP. If supported with facts, I see no issue with saying that he is a *better* candidate than Lebron james.

If you are willing to have a cool discussion about something, I don't mind that. However, nobody is right or wrong when it comes to a general issue like sports- I mean, why the hell would you even bother debating something in the Entertainment thread? Just because you don't have any topic to discuss in the GD doesn't mean you can bring it over here. And when I meant a discussion, I certainly didn't expect someone to quote each and every sentence I wrote and offer a counter point to that.
My aim for this thread would be fascilitate short, quick discussions about sports in general, like:
A:- Hey, saw the Yankees game yesterday?
B:- Yeah, can't believe they barely won against the Royals. They could easily buy them, you know.

Where does being smart come into the ENTERTAINMENT section? This pointless exchange of insults shouldn't even be happening (unless it entertains people). You're the only one bringing intelligence into this.
Clarification of your own opinion : I'm not contesting the poster's choice of MVP. That's bullshit and you know it. You ARE contesting the poster's choice of MVP. So don't deny that. Essentially what you and NERD are trying to say is that one choice is better than the other. The only thing difference is that you have a much stronger opinion, as evidenced by your going out and collecting facts to try to assert your position. But it really is no different from saying you like ham. All you can do is list reasons to show why you have that general preference. In the same way, that's essentially all that you've done with your argument about who should be MVP.
When you say "Blah blah blah twisted stats, repeat what i've heard sportscasters say on espn" and then "Well i don't want to argue I just want to assert an opinion that is pretty polarized within sports circles" is ducking your head in the sand. I feel that's dishonest, and degrades anyone who reads it.
You're doing the same damn thing. When you said that you will ignore anyone else's opinion on the matter because you're right, that's the same thing as ducking your head in sand. That is dishonest and degrading to anyone who reads it.
:whoops:
I really hope english is like your third language, because you seem to get lost in discussions quite a bit. If that's the case, I will pardon your behavior.
Okay. I guess your English is just perfect then.

I ignored you right after the 1st sentence. Personal opinions, by their very nature, ARE subjective. No matter how many objective facts you throw, that doesn't change the fact that your opinion is subjective. You can only say it's a well argued opinion. But you cannot say it's objective.
Ah, the joys of delusion. I guess you must be the smartest person within your social circle, leading to false confidence in your abilities to manipulate conversations. There isn't a mirror emote so i'll leave it at that.

That is true, however having seen parts of the game Sunderland did have some clear chances to score and tried to go forward sometimes. It's not like when they went to Anfield a couple of seasons ago, mustered up a grand total of 0 shots and came away with a goalless draw, they were actually playing football, which impressed me quite a bit.
