Like sport? Play sport?
Talk about it here!

I don't really play any sports but I'm pretty active.
Currently I do Shaolin Kung Fu but it's not really a sport. We have competitions and stuff and I would put the training on par w/ any high-impact sport.
I dance a lot - mostly ballet and jazz but I've done a bit of modern and salsa also. I just got into traditional Chinese dance for a little bit but I don't know if I'm going to stick w/ it b/c of other time commitments.
I used to fence but it was building up my body unevenly and messing up my knees and back so I quit and I opted to focus more on ballet. Never regretted it :D I'll have plenty of chances to play with weapons in kung fu anyway!
I like AFL (http://afl.com.au), the Australian Football League. It's our own rather unique take on the game of football.
We use an oval-shaped ball, and the goal is, like most ball games, to get it in the opposition's goal at either end of the pitch. It's kind of like rugby in that you run with the ball and people can tackle you.
It's a fun game and my team is on top of the ladder. :D But we need to win the last home and away group of the season to finish on top, or the team we're playing will get above us.

It's like American football w/o safety gear?
Honestly, I don't know anything about either but it's still fun to watch occasionally. It's kinda sad in the US since some people only watch the season game for the commercials.

Nah, rugby is closer to American football. In your version, instead of throwing the ball you lay it length-wise on the palm of your hand and bash it on the end with the fist of your other hand.
The goals - two big sticks which score 6 points per goal. There's 2 areas to either side of the goal that score 1 point if you're inaccurate.
When someone kicsk the ball and you catch it, it's called a "mark" and you can hold onto it until another of your players is free to kick it to.

Hmm... I love ultimate frisbee.
I play soccer and racquetball sometimes.
I am trying to learn some Aikido.
All just fun diversions from the rest of life.
Soccer is one of my favourite sports, especially the English Premier league. Go Manchester United!!!one

I hate sports. Unless you count hiking and backpacking as sports. But any organized sport can kiss my sweet and oh so white ass! ;-)
Ok, you may now continue with the standard male adulation of sports.

Soccer is freaken awesome!
I'm sadden that China didn't make it into the World cup. I knew that they sucked balls. I knew that they had no chance in hell. But I still dreamed. And my dream was crushed.
Those bastards!
I hope Australia makes it to the World Cup. We've got Guus Hiddink as our coach, the Wunderkind who took Korea from shit team to semi-finals. I hope we make it!

Looks like Solomon beat Australia once in a match already 1:0.

tekkan: Yeah, we got pwnzed by Solomon Islands. That was back when we were in a mudhole though. I think, anyway.

I played both basked ball and football, for those from the us, its football not soccer, we are more then you and you should freaking change name of the American football to something else, like 'the game where Mongoloids beats the crap out of each other'.
That said, I like basked ball more the soccer. I trialed for a league team last week and didn’t make, as I didn’t play basked for 3 year after blowing my knee out. So now before I go to Japan ill start some martial art and just as I leave for Japan ill go to the trainer that cut me out and beat the crap out of him. Yes that’s my plan.
I'm having some kinda weird crisis. I've always said I don't like basketball but I saw a game the other day and was actually excited.
I like football better.

I'm not a big fan of futbol Americano but I will say theirs a lot more to it than people bashing into each other. The game is actually a lot like chess. Every play is a mini battle with a pre-planned strategy. If like the science of war than you'd like American football.

Well I actually like chess, love it really, and I actually played futbol Americano as you put it and I kind of enjoyed it. I can the resembles to chess too, it’s just that the name doesn’t fit it, the only time the feet and ball are combined is the kick off :D

Football (American) just seems to slow for me. They gotta stop after each play and stuff.
I like it better when the game flows.

Yeah, that sucks. You should try our game, tekkan. The only way it stops is if someone scores a goal or they can't get the ball out from underneath the pack so the umpire calls for the ball. :D

It Australian Rugbee like The European one?
I saw a game of that. It was interesting.
I forget what it is called, where the players kind of form a line and try and push through the defenders.
I dunno, I found it very interesting, and some of the moves were very amusing.
Not the same game, tekkan. ;)
But yeah, what you're thinking of is rugby union, and it's standardised all around the world.

I love Amercian football and baseball. I wish I could play football, but I'm only 5'2" and I'm a girl (yes I know some girls do play now, still I'd get my ass kicked). I've always wanted to try rugby and cricket (sp?).
I played soccer in high school, but the sport I'm best at is equestrian sports, like show jumping and cross country stuff (you know, the thing Christopher Reeves was doing when he fell off his horse). It's hella fun, but scary as shit, so I don't do it now as much as I used too :( .

Yes, sorry. I'm have not gotten my Quidditch terminolgy quite memorized yet.
i hate sports. well.....ok I'll rephrase. When i was is 9-12th grade I loved to play football and basketball(sometimes, when I still thought i was good) with my friends. Fun as hell, 4vs4 and such.
but like...sports games, watching sports, can't do it.
Why?
Can't watch sports because I live in Minnesota. All our teams either
A) really suck
B) do super good only to let down fans every year. Yet somehow suckers keep coming back. Wolves did it, Vikings live it, Even the Wild(hockey) did it.
Screw that. losers :P
Sports games....umm...no.
What's the point of making some fantasy virtual game of something YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO? I can't have a 16 player deatmatch with my friends, or race go karts and toss shells back at each other...but football? Yeah That's alot funner played with friends at the local park than sitting down in my room playing Madden 200it doesn't matter because their all the same.
So you could say I don't like sports games :P
I guess If i lived in California or a winning state I would be saying something else.

I'm currently doing Karate, I'm going to do Kendo...
Which style of Karate? I'm signedup to join Shotokan at my com. college with Koyama sensei. As for Kendo, my gramps was 6th dan; even after retirement, he taught police to do their stuff right :)
Last night I rolled my right foot in Capoeira doing a simple, one-handed Au (cartwheel). Needless to say, I didn't get to do any of the fun stuff that followed :(
(sigh)...ice, heat, tiger balm, wrap.
As for sport sports, I don't have much interest in watching them or playing some of them; they get way too linear. I do, however, enjoy my fair share of football (soccer); if it involves kicking, I'm almost bought.
I'd enjoy doing this, but I'm 6'4" and I'd probably break the horse in half after a few minutes. Then ride an Arabian :)

Ultimate frisbee is great, you don't have to be good at it to have fun!
And as scary as it sounds, I've gotten hurt far more in just a few sessions of basketball than probably 40-50 soccer games (granted, we play more of... soccer-lite)
I like all the running though, it makes my heart feel good :)

I don't really like to play any sports... I did enjoy racquetball one time, but I don't pursue playing it.
I really don't think I can call my martial arts training a "sport"... just a philosophical thing to me. I was taught under the notion that once a martial arts becomes a sport, it becomes a game, not a serious method of protecting oneself.
But I think I can call boxing a sport, so I'll call that. :D I love to box. Yeah I'm pretty much a featherweight, but I can take the larger opponents since my hands and footwork are generally faster.

Nah! You'd be surprised at how strong horses are! There are lots of guys that are over 6' and don't bother a horse! You should try it. There's nothing like flying over a 5' fence on a 1/2 ton animal to scare the crap out of you.
Oh yeah, I've always wanted to try martial arts too (you know, being a single girl now and in a big city, it would be nice to be able to defend myself if I ever needed to) but I've never figured out which one I'd want to do.

It's the art of moving the body... Something like that. It teaches one how to roll along hard surfaces, fall while minimizing damage and pain, and to basically use one's body to the optimum level of efficiency. It's closely linked to ninjutsu.
It can teach you how to escape certain holds, how to move the body in order to increase damage to the opposition, how to perform skeletal freezing (causing a certain movement that stops a person from attacking for a moment) the like... Just think karate with a lot of emphasis on understand how the body moves and works.
Edit: It can be hard for some people... and it is a bit more advanced than most other mainstream martial arts, but it is a very effective art. Well worth the time and practice. One does not realize how important knowing how to roll and dive roll until one day you suddenly think to yourself "Oh crap that guy is going to push me onto the pavement. Better bust a roll".

What kind of Taijutsu? From what I know, it's a style primarly taught in the Bujinkan (ninjutsu, soke Hatsumi). Taijutsu is a collective term for physical martial art; though some schools use it as a brand for themselves.
EDIT: In response to Fujin's post, I'd say a good example is Aikido/Jujutsu type practice.

Cool! Thanks! I'm not a very big person at all, so defending myself against someone twice my size is nearly impossible unless I know how to do moves like that. I'll definitly check it out! Not that I'm going to be able to fend off an attacker right away or anything or even be able to fend off weapons, but I figure even alittle knowledge is better than none at all.
And just to keep this on track as the the sports thread. GO HAWKEYES!
I also really would like to learn how to play rugby and cricket (anyone know how?)! I've always been somewhat of a tomboy (I'm not affraid to get alittle dirty playing with the boys and I don't mean that in a sexual way!!) :p

Indeed. The Bujinkan. I forget which part I study under since I've been out of the dojo for a bit. :( I'm going back soon enough I hope. And yeah, I'd say Jujutsu is a better comparison as Aikido holds many very different principles that I would rather not group with Taijutsu or Jujutsu.
Yeah I think you should check it out Shamu. It is a very practical art. You don't have to master anything. Most martial artists say that simply mastering basic skills can save you in many scenarios.
I swam for two years, played tennis for one, took karate for about 2-3 year, and 5 years later I returned for one more year, which was pretty horrible because I pretty much dominated everyone in my class, except for the biggest guy there.(Me being a measly 110 kicking peoples asses who were like 130 is an accomplishment to say the least). Now I run track, and dabble in a few other sports on and off.

I'm sure I'm sounding like a MA snob here, but Karate isn't just Karate; there are styles of it including Shotokan, Wado-ryu, Goju-ryu, etc. as well as the one they consider to be the top "fighting" Karate style; Kyokushinkai, founded by master Mas Oyama, aka the hard nut who claimed to kill bulls.
Otherwise it's just a school passing itself off as "karate" when it's probably another style, or as the Martial Arts Planet forum called, a "McDojo".
Ahh I am sorry I forgot to state which one it was.
It actually is sho-to-kan.
Went to some competitions so I guess it was mostly real or just a really big scam. And no my sensei never mentioned anything about guys killing bulls.

Well the bull-killing nut was the kyoku founder, while the shotokan master was a total pacifist. I like the latter more, only I think kyoku students are better built. Scammed tournaments aren't uncommon, especially when your opponent is judged by his/her instructor :(

I've been playing tennis since I was a kid. I grew up playing baseball and now play softball 2-3 times a week during the summer. I played intramural football in college and played and coached basketball up until a couple of years ago. I do stats for the football team at my high school.
I also have season tickets for the Detroit Red Wings (hockey) and watch the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons just about whenever they're on tv. Unlike Minnesota (sorry Kokujin), I've been fortunate enough to see 3 Stanley Cups, 3 NBA Chapionships, a World series Championship and even a Lions playoff win (they're only one in 48 years). I also like watching the University of Michigan football games.

There are soooo many different types of martial arts.
Decide what style you like in terms of the movements (punches, kicks, holds, throws, grappling, weapons, etc). Every martial art (should) at least expose you to most of these and then focus on something that goes along with their philosophy. Picking a style to study definately requires a lot of research.
