Is it just me or is this just stupid? Another example of Japanese xenophobia in the extreme. I think Japan should be striken from the UN council for things like this (I know US does this too and they should be too :)). I hate them assuming that anyone foreign is a threat, when it seems most of the 'bad things' that happen (in any country) are from internal problems/people. Perhaps Japan should stop looking outward for problems and start working out some of the more important social problems.
I hope the UK doesn't implement anything like this...

It's not that anyone foreign is a threat but that some people foreign are a threat, and so it's not a bad idea to keep tabs.
Some people who are native are a threat too, but it would be ridiculously difficult to enofrce nationwide fingerprinting.

It's just security, not xenophobia

America does the same thing. Big deal. It does make sense though. I mean if you are going to the hassle of being part of multigovernment crime enforcement agencys like Interpol or whatever you might as well use the information to catch the criminals at your borders.

What I don't get is how do reasonable people consider this a human rights violation? The BBC mentions it and I know groups in America get all bent out of shape over it too. Can someone explain to me what the problem with "Hello, welcome to our country, we're going to spend 15 minutes taking your photo and getting your fingerprints so we can track you down if you start killing people." is a human rights violation. Odds are your home country has that information on file (at least the photo for your ID), so why should you care if other governments want to do the same?

How is that similar?

Denying service v. registering with fingerprints

By the way the article made a strange connection to, telling someone not to come into your shop is not the same as hitting them with a motorcycle.

lol, i never really find that provoking (fingerprinting), it's just a hassle XD

Why would terrorist want to bomb Japan when they get a much better result trying to bomb us.

I don't really get what the hang up is about fingerprinting. Afraid that you'll get caught more easily if you ever do something illegal? o.O

I think they should fingerprint all Japanese males. That would make it easier to catch underwear thieves. XD

I think it's stupid. It's also bringing back a policy that was common before foreigners complained about it. Now it's being pushed as a counterterrorism measure. Since when has Japan been targeted for terrorism? The most prominent cases of terrorism in Japan are done by the Japanese - Aum Shinrikyo and the Red Army.

It's not a security measure. It's just another way to keep track of that horrific variable, the non-Japanese.

Someday it's gonna be like The Fifth Element or Minority Report or Gattaca and you won't be able to walk two steps without someone knowing who you are...

So why is it that when America does something nobody says anything about it, but when Japan does the same thing we are labled as xenophobic? We are just following what the victim of the biggest terrorist attack of recent years is doing, and everyone is like "dude that's not cool". I mean, better safe than sorry, right?

I think because if non-Americans complain about the States, America says "Love it or leave it". So nobody bothers.

I DID say something about it. It's the main reason why I won't be paying the States a visit anytime soon. And I'm very sad to see things seem to go the same way with Japan.

The US is VERY Xenophobic. Not only do they fingerprint you, they take your digital picture as well and make you carry an RFID tag.

As for the guy who said they'd getter reaction bombing us, I'm sure the residents of Bali would disagree.

Fingerprinting allows you to trackback foreigners. It's MUCH easier to track nationals as they carry national forms of ID.
