View Full Version : If you were a writer, what genre would you write?

I am curious about our audience...
What genre of books fascinates you the most, that (assuming you could write and get published) would spur you onto writing a book of your own?
I myself and a sci-fi/horror buff. 90% of the books are either murder/homocides/suicides or are people in dungeons with knives and guns.
What about you?

memoir
I have a hard time writing things that aren't distinctly autobiographical. Fortunately, I've led a pretty interesting life so far.
I love good Sci-Fi, but I'm not very good at writing it.
I like fairy tales... and stories with like a hidden meaning
Hell, I'd write fiary tales. It just isn't a book if it doesn't start "once upon a time"
What genre would be a decree stating eyez0nme sucks nads? That he has no original point of view and merely copy/pastes every thread he creates?

Military (History or fiction) and Sci-fi. Love military books and love sci-fi (Battletech Universe =D).
Eh, I'm pretty sure he doesn't deserve a published biography.

Go for it. You can't do any worse then some of the hacks they've got doing the Dark Age books now (Michael Stackpole notwithstanding...)

Science-Fiction & Fantasy, and am writing one currently. ^_^
Stuff.
I'll give you an A+ for effort. Even though most of us have a gripe with you, you're still trying.
Personally, I'd write one of three things:
a) A really fast-paced edge of your seat kind of action-thriller shocker.
b) An action-adventure.
c) A motor racing novel.
Why not all three? :D

Action/adventure but only if I had some kind of military experience so it would be realistic. Like Andy Mcnab..
You can contact military people and get them to advise you. That's what Matthew Reilly does.

I do write... I've written lots of interesting short stories... mainly realistic. I love sci-fi but I too have a hard time writing it.
I love making use of good dialogue... that's what I try to specialize in... I once wrote a short story about suicidal teenagers using only dialogue.
I have a good idea for a story about once a year. My last one was based on the Japanese folk story(abaste yama) or the famous film "The Ballad of Nara Yama". That was written about a year ago.
My next story is formulating in my head right now. It's kinda sci-fi. It's about a girl who gets a brand new car for her 16th birthday. This is in the future when there are android(well okay I forgot the correct name for it. You know just like HAL from 2000 Space Oddesey?) cars that can communicate telepathically with their human owners.
I started out writing Pokemon Team Rocket fanfiction when I was 14 years old. I love writing short-stories now. I was writing a fanfic about Terry and Rock Bogard(SNK characters) but stopped with that. Maybe I will finish that one up sometime.... I just don't really write fanfics anymore.
I have an idea for a novel, but there is no way I will start writing that one for a while.... it'll be a utopian novel about a world where there is no disease... except for people who commit crimes.

Much though I hate to admit it, probably political commentary. Either that, or some book on the philosophy of martial art that would likely sound like I'd been on a ganja diet for 40 years. :P

Sci-fi/fantasy (I have a bunch of incomplete FF fanfics stashed on my computer somewhere)
Satire, if only I was a lot more knowledgeable with political and social issues
somethin' set in a post-apocaliptic setting (like the game Fallout). or "samurai-fiction". those are my personal favorites. but I'm no good at writing. I did do some writing some years ago with Fallout Fan-Fictions (mainly with the "Clan" I was in back then, The Order; TO is not a Clan in a normal sense since Fallout is not an Online game... that's why I put it in quotation marks).
What kind of head trip would it be to be Kafka. I can't imagine.
my genre would be; fun, humor and laughter. Or maybe erotic... depends on my mood ;)

erotic paperback books for housewifes
pulp fiction-ish, but that would be a lousy book so i would have to change it in to a movie script.

I would write the next Bible.
Honestly.
And excerpt from my book:1 In the beginning Pliff created the intraweb and the pr0n.
2 Now free time was formless and empty, scrambled PPV porn was over the surface of the TV, and the Spirit of Pliff was hovering in the static.
3 And Pliff said, "Let there be pr0n," and there was pr0n. 4 Pliff saw that the pr0n was good, and He separated the pr0n from the scrambled PPV pr0n. 5 Pliff called the pr0n "mosaic-free," and the static he called "mosaic." And there was evening, and there was morning葉he first wank-a-thon.
6 And Pliff said, "Let there be an expanse between the pr0n to separate pr0n from pr0n." 7 So Pliff made the intraweb and separated the pr0n on the TV from the pr0n elsewhere. And it was so. 8 Pliff called the expanse "intraweb." And there was evening, and there was morning葉he second wank-a-thon.
9 And Pliff said, "Let the pr0n on the TV be gathered to one place, and let the Spice Channel and late-night Cinemax appear." And it was so. 10 Pliff called the Spice Channel "for adults," and the Cinemax he called "a moving Victoria's Secret Catalog." And Pliff saw that it was good.
11 Then Pliff said, "Let the pr0n produce variation: blowjob-oriented suck-fests and vaginal sex in many position and over many objects, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The darkside of the movie industry produced variation: blowjob-fests of various kinds and vaginal sex in many positions and on various furniture according to their kinds. And Pliff saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning葉he third wank-a-thon.
14 And God said, "Let there be intraweb in the expanse of pr0n to separate the wank-a-thons from the chafage, and let them serve as distractions to entertain for days and years, 15 and let them be games in the expanse of the intraweb to give alternatives to wanking on the earth." And it was so. 16 Pliff made two great intrawebs葉he greater intraweb to govern pr0n and the lesser intraweb to govern the other entertainment. He also made telnet. 17 Pliff set them in the expanse of the telephone lines and cable cables to give intraweb to the earth, 18 to govern the high-speed access, and to separate the intraweb from TV pr0n. And Pliff saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning葉he fourth night, but first game-a-thon.
20 And Pliff said, "Let the intraweb teem with live webcams, and let torrents broaden the horizon of all those who wish free pr0n." 21 So Pliff created the P2P networks and every MPAA-cursed thing and webcam site with which the intraweb teems, according to their kinds, and every free pr0n site according to its kind. And Pliff saw that it was good. 22 Pliff blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the intraweb, and let the free pr0n increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning葉he fifth day and fourth wank-a-thon.

Other than that, comedy. I try for other genres but I just can't take them seriously. At least, not when I'm writing.

Sci-fi/Fantasy: I have my own world already drawn up and some of it is written, but since i am a lazy bum with descriptions, the desc. on the citys and major kingdoms are short.. well atleast till i can figure what is blocking my creative thought process.. because i seem to have lost it somewhere.

Well in order to be the first to stir discord in your lovely religion, allow me to ask if porn according to their kinds includes gay porn or other porn which is looked down upon such as child porn.
If tis not so, would I be wise to expect your bible to continue with story of plagues onto those who whack off to craven images?

Humor, most likely. My favorite book is "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson... I'd like to write like he does, some how serious about hair that looks like windblown pubis... lol

I really wish I could write young peoples' fantasy books. But I seem to have creative ADD - I can never stick to one type of creative expression. I'll start writing something, and then decide that I can't accurately portray a character description in writing, and end up drawing it. Then I like the drawing, and decide the story would be better suited to a comic book. Then I can't exactly get the effect I want in the comic, and start thinking of good written descriptions, so I start writing too much and decide that it was a better as a short story after all. Then the short story turns into a novella, and then it turns out that the novella wasn't detailed enough, so I make plans to do a novel, but another idea pops into my head, so I start doodling again. Then I get a song stuck in my head and have to play it, and that leads to more random doodling, which leads to the desire to design fashion because I like the clothes I drew and wish I had them, which leads to the long-lost desire to do pottery, just because I'm getting sick of creative stuff that you don't get into physically as well as creatively. And then I realize I don't have a pottery wheel, I don't have the training to become an artist, I don't know how to sew, and I don't have the patience or attention span to write a book, nor (it seems) the capability of keeping a short story truly short, so I go into the kitchen and make up some new muffin recipe.
In all seriousness, this is the thought cycle that runs through my head on approximately a weekly basis. I can't get anything done, because I can't concentrate on anything long enough to finish it.
...............back to topic.....my answer...YP fantasy, if I could ever get around to it.

Creative ADD rant.
You could always try doing a webcomic.
It's kind of like doing a comic, but dividing the process into numerous tiny steps, instead of a moderate number of big ones.
If you can discipline yourself long enough to get started and get a few pages done, you may learn to surpress your creative ADD, whether it's from building a routine, or having an audience that likes your work and motivates you, or whatever.
Or you could illustrate someone else's ideas. Maybe you have a friend that wants to write a comic, but can't draw. If you work on someone else's idea, your creative ADD might not be as bad, and as you set a routine, you may eventually learn to express your ideas better.
*Shrugs*
Just some ideas.

Yeah, happens to me to. In a way, it's so much easier to do a comic/manga than a novel. But in that case i do more like a fantasy / sci-fi thing... but i so love drama! :P
