Cute.

This is the one of the universal words used by women and girls. Whenever a girl looks at a baby they think "Ooooo that's cute" or a puppy and say "You are just a little cutie."

It's a firm word used to describe many things.

One thing is should never describe however is a guy. Either way you say it to us (which you never should) it cuts through us like a knife through butter and an angle cuts its wrists...and implodes....

When ladies discuss it with each other it's fine, but when they say it to a guy we go into full panic mode. We wonder "WHAT DOES SHE MEAN!?" We translate it in our minds and try to send out a signal that is proper enough to handle in our tiny little minds.

We think "Did she call me cute cause she wants to hook up, maybe just close friends, OH GOD! Maybe she said it just to not hurt my feelings! I bet that's it! Oh man I forgot to give my dog water. I hope I make it home in time for CSI..."

You get the picture.

It cuts through us because when we break it down Cute="heh heh I'll be nice".

*sniff* you have no idea how much you hurt us guys.

I totally agree.
For those of us who want relationships and not just sex, cute's a good way to describe a guy you'd like to BE with and not just FUCK. :P Hot's for just FUCKING, but some of us want more than that.

I'll admit that "cute" is a bit amiguous. But I've gotten the compliment, and I find nothing wrong with it. What it all comes down to is the tone the word is used in... the delivery, in other words.

More often than not, I never get that far, though... I just get girls watching me, probably waiting for me to approach. I need to pay attention.

I don't complement many people, it's just not my thing.. However, it's a bit disappointing for me to call someone cute, then have them be bummed.

Guys need to grow some damn balls and accept it when someone calls them cute.

Guys worry when they get called cute?

As far as I know, in the modern sense when a girl uses it for a guy, it is synonymous with "attractive." Just fewer syllables to put across more or less the same meaning.

In a more general sense, I tend to use it when I'm in the mood to get all touchy-feely. If it's a little kid, he or she is cute if they just did something that makes me want to hug them and ruffle their hair. If it's a dog or cat, I want to pet it and cuddle it. If it's a keychain, I've gotta pick it up and examine it from all sides. If it's a character in a movie, I squeal and wish it were solid so I could hug it/pet it/cuddle it/pick it up/etc., as per actual item. If it's my boyfriend, I want to....ahem, well, we'll just leave that one up to the imagination. Suffice it to say that if my boyfriend hears it, he knows that we'll be doing more than just watching a movie that night. :D

cute is my word choice for anyone who's good looking.
it's not so embarrassing to say, because cute can either mean I think he was cute as in a guy, or as in a boy.

Usually when I say it hyper-ly, it means you're just boy cute.

When I say it shy-ly, then you are guy cute.

cute is a fun word to tease guys with :)

"man-up"; i hate that phrase with a PASSION. used by my ex-girlfriend when i refused to do things that i just didn't feel comfortable doing (she seriously wanted me to try out that green 'mud' stuff on your face to help clean the pores or some crap like that) or what i felt was more of a female thing that a guy thing. i failed to see how doing something "unmanly" was a way for me to "man-up" i much prefer the term Fujin used earlier, CONFIDENCE. some guys have it towards some things, others don't. the whole 'calling guys cute' can go either way. in one guys point of view rests on mostly hearing cute only referred to something girlish, it could then be as if the girl was alluding him to being girlish in some way. i happen to perceive cute in the "OMG FLUFFY :hobbes: FUZZY FUNNY KEYOOOOOOOT GOOFBALL/KITTY (all in caps too! :D)!!1!" context and since i know i'm a goofball and would like to think i'm even somewhat cuddly even though i'm quite plain of face; i have no big problems being called cute.

i dislike the word. stupid, overused, senseless, (insert negative adjective) word.

times i use it.. seldom, i think. then again my choice of pretty as an adjective won't please you guys too -- even though i really think pretty boys are awesome :box:

1. Delightfully pretty or dainty.
2. Obviously contrived to charm; precious: “ [He] mugs so ferociously he kills the humorit's an insufferably cute performance” (David Ansen).
3. Shrewd; clever
although i do like the 3rd meaning given in dictionary.com :D

i'm alittle disappointed with the topic :o i thought #17 was about to embark on a "OMGZ U GRRRRLS STOP ACTING CUTEZORS!1!!!1!" tirade. that'd have been funner (shut up, i know what i'm doing).

New here, dropping my 2 cents on the cute subject:

the problem with the use of word "cute" is because:
1) women use *cute* with "small" thingys or beings, generally something that has a harmless appeareance.
2)for a guy it can not only mean that he's a wimp, but it can also have the same effect of being called beautiful (something you donīt have a problem IF you are into your own sex I guess), therefore is better to say that john smith is a "nice" guy instead of cute.
3) one thing is that we guys are told that what we *did* was cute and another being called indefensive harmless boys...*grins* Although, putting the macho jerk aside (which Azrael says is the only one that gets laid) there is also the jerk that likes being called cute, as he gets laid faster than the macho guy (normally the "nice guy" that does get chicks).

That is why most heterosexual guys (myself included) dislike being qualified as cute, although we (at least I) donīt mind being told that what we did was cute.

If I hear a girl calling me cute, I dismiss any Idea about her for some reasons reasons:

A) as good as she might look, she has no brain, or at least no real education if she uses the word with the expresion and the awwww thing (last thing I like is talking to a girl that only knows about hollywood, make up, dancing and music, and whose idea of a elegant meal is going to a expensive restaurant to eat a burguer).
B) Iīm more a nice guy than I look and prefer a clean game... or as clean as it can be, macho jerks kept better reptation than cute jerks who are discovered.

that is, unless the girl is cute herself and her face and voice do make clear that she is looking for some action; if not, itīs better to retreat like a gentleman, just saying something in the lines of "no, you're the cute one" (add the correct words depending on the situation)

Stuff.

I'm kidna like that - if the girl calls me cute with the "awwww" expression in her voice it's pretty annoying, because I'm NOT aww cute. I have a cute face, but leave it at that.

I tend to be the kind of guy that will keep a good repertoire and/or relationship with the chick who calls me cute anyway, because she may become useful at a later date. The fact that she just called me aww cute doesn't make her any less doable. :D

I'll drop it here, no sense in keep it going on in this topic, however, I'll offer my apologies if that will calm you down; but to make things clear here:

Tekkan, what I meant to say was that unless there is romance implied when a guy gets called "cute", the best thing is to drop any idea with a girl if she isn't using it in a smat manner; I recognize there was a better -and less offensive- way to express this and I had used it if I had not posted it in a hurry as class was about to begin (leading me to just erase some parts of the post).

"more than that" = financial support and an emotional tampon

god have mercy on us poor men - for we shall recieve none from women :o

If a girl called me 'awww cute' and patted me on the head, the fact that she implied that I was girly would be negated from the satisfaction that she has just gained the ignominy of being the first female ever to touch me. :sarcasm:

Hmm I always thought when girls called me 'cute' it meant 'attractive'. Does this mean they were saying I was like a liddle widdy puppy or their kid brother? Damn!!

I think this is one of those same word-different meanings things. In the US cute might be fine for fully grown adults but in the UK it is usually reserved for cross-eyed kittens on cheap boxes of chocolates. Or Boybands.

There is something so saccharine about cute that, even though I know it is well meant, part of me just curls up and dies.

And I'm female. So I have some sympathy for the guys who don't like being called cute.

Depends on the tone of voice. If you do something that obviously IS cute and the girl responds with "oh, you're cute" and doesn't make a big dance about it, that's okay.

Like, an observation.

But if she goes "awwwww, how cuuuuuute! *headpat*" then THAT'S when I kinda die inside.

You got to look at the big picture here. It's a compliment. It's better than being called something worse...

Don't worry about it Mock.

I get bored at work and I entertain myself by starting shit with someone on the forums.

I know what you meant, but agreeing with people gets boring after a while.

I dunno, wouldn't guys rather be called cute than ugly? If I were a guy I'd rather be called cute cuz ugly is mean.=(

Puppies are cute.. kitties are cute

Usually small = cute, well more often than big = cute

I bet that has something to do with it. Guys don't really like being called small,so the same goes to other diminuitive words.

... cute sounds almost like your talking down to something, it's not taken seriously you know

I'm never taken seriously though so I don't mind it, but I suppose it would depend with the situation... there are intimate times where calling a guy cute might crush him ^^;

Way to be manly.

Coming from the kid who looks about as manly as Barbra Streisand, that's kinda amusing. :D

Actually I think Barbra Streisand is manlier than both of us.
