Otaku is a shut-in with a serious hobby problem. Not an anime fan. You are not an otaku.

If you have social skills, you're an anime fan, not an otaku.
If you're a social outcast who's only friends are other otakus, have normal people shun you, and have absolutely no interest in anything else, and are constantly telling EVERYONE about anime, you're an otaku. And you need help. Desparately.

If a actual living japanese (in the location sense, not the ethnic sense) person called you an otaku, you just might be.
If a non-japanese person called you that, you are not. However, that person just might be a total loser.

I could have sworn Otaku was a Japanese word that meant house and just happens to be used by dumbass Americans who don't know what the hell they are talking about. At least that is what I was always told.

Hey house, why don't you put down your hentai!?
Haha, I have social skills, but over the summer I became a major nerd.

It does mean house, but the term otaku when applied to a person tends to mean someone who doesn't leave their house because they're some form of a fanatic shut-in. And the second part is spot-on as well because Americans who use it for the most part have absolutely no idea what it means.

too much Naruto and Inuyasha makes one go brain dead. That is the truth.
Not that i don't enjoy them, but why go on endlessly every single day about how cool Sasuke/Naruto/Kira/anyone else is? You enjoy it, just go: "Mm, yes naruto is nice."

Well I haven't seen Naruto but from what I hear is that starts out good enough but like Inuyasha it has degraded to worthless filler episodes by season three and becomes increasingly less important to watch.

Ever notice that seems to happen to most shows?
Detective Conan, Inu-Yasha, M.A.S.H., Naruto, The Fugitive (original B&W), etc?
The problem is when you have a definate plotline, you can only stetch it so far before it is gonna snap and the story goes horrible.
All of these shows, in order to be spammed for 5,6,7 seasons and still retain the original plotline, HAVE to have a ton of filler episodes.
Inu-yasha should have been a 50 episode series or so. Maybe a couple fillers to allow the viewer to catch their breath every so often, but mostly plot. Instead, we get this inane 160+ episode series, most of the episodes have nothing to do with the Jewel they are trying to reassemble.
You want a good relevant show, then cut the episode count down.

I hate D&D... And all other fantasy stuff. When I'm not doing graphic design stuff for my job, or surfing the 'net, or studying, or any of that other stuff I have to do, the only games I play are stuff like BF2, COD, etc...
I enjoy well written character interactions enough that if the show is reasonable, I'll put up with filler. Of course, I was using the Inuyasha anime's first two seasons in tandem with the manga to improve my Japanese while I was in Japan, and it's simple enough that I was able to pick up most of what was going on, so that's a large part of the reason I enjoyed it.
My brother loves anime, but considers 52 episodes to be the longest any anime can be and still be good. 26 or 13 episodes is preferable. I can see his point. If you watch anime for the plot, he's probably right - unless a story is truly epic in scope, 52 is about the limit for meaningful plot (I think Juuni Kokki is the only anime I've seen thus far that could go over my brother's 52 ep limit and still have an awesomeplot with little to no filler).
But since I enjoy the silly stuff as well, for brainless, not meaningful, entertainment, marketers know they can get away with stupid stuff like that and still rake in the cash. My real problem with Inuyasha was the anime should have stuck with the manga. The manga has a few meanderings off into meaninglessness, but it's 95% on plot. It's just no sane company is going to pause an anime to allow more manga plot to be written - they wouldn't keep raking in the profits that way.
I hope Juuni Kokki will continue. :) My goal is to improve my Japanese to the point where I can read the novels. Then my life will be complete. ;)

M*A*S*H filler episodes and anime filler episodes are different breeds, and if you think that M*A*S*H had a definite end from the start, then you're being whacky. Yes, the Korean war eventually does end, but given the utter lack of a timeline for the audience, it's pretty easy to stretch it out without having 'filler' episodes, as the whole show is just 'filler' for what happened to a mobile hospital unit during the Korean war.
It's not a plot-based drama like the West Wing or somesuch, and while there are small plot threads, they don't usually go beyond a few episodes. The big plot things are when a character leaves and gets replaced. Even those weren't anywhere approaching a season or half a season long...

That's the problem with serials that don't have a definate end they like to keep them going as long as they are popular. The single season ones are usually alot more solid for a show. If Inuyasha was based on a single season it probabally would have been one of the best shows around but since they had to start making filler episodes after season one the show just wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. The other thing that annoyed me about Inuyasha was that it seemed that the animators stoped drawing Kagome in real clothes. In the first season she is almost never in her school uniform when in the past but in the second season on she is in uniform exclusively.

Haha, I'm not a Japanophile, I'm a Japettophile, you know the guy who made Pinocchio?
Inuyasha's second season was kinda good, it was good up until like a little bit after he started turning full demon and stuff. I remember one time I didn't watch like 3 episodes, and than I watched it and it's like "OMGZORZ ME AND SESSHOUMARU ARE ALL LIKE TEAMED UPZ" and I was like O.O what the hell happened, and then I was like, maybe it'll be good again, and than I watched the next weeks ep and it's like "OMGZORZ FRIGGING SANGO WILL j00 MARRY ME, FRIGGIN IDIOT" and I was like damn filler episodes......
Man, I've been wanting to watch Inuyasha alot lately for some odd reason. I hate that show too! Well, the first couple of seasons were good, for the most part. I think I might just get the last like 10 episodes on my computer, so I can see what happens.

I actually prefer longer anime's. I dont like it when they end very fast. Also meitanteikonan happends to be my favorite anime, it keeps me interested because each time the case is different. Also they could end it anytime I am sure. But anyway after 411 episodes I am still interested in it.

I agree with houkouonchi, if I'm enjoying a show, I usually don't want it to end, so the longer the better, as long as its fun, its all good. The only time padding really annoys me is when its a ton of Flashbacks. but if you take into account how TV works over there, they only get 1 episode per week, It doesn't seem so horrendous. CN usually shows an episode per day, so we are getting everything all at once, so those type of episodes seem to be alot closer together than they should.
Even on DVD we tend to watch 3 or 4 or however many episodes are on there, so the show takes alot of flack because its not being watched in the manner for which it was intended.
I watch in this fashion also, but because I understand how its supposed to be, I don't let things like that bother me too much

Go, go, Wiki. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku)
I like the common load-words they've used in the page, as well. The arts-school I graduated from was crawling with some of these kids; they weren't mean, or anything, though, only noisy. I think I've had my share of fanatacism, though that was a decade ago.
Another term relating to otaku types is "hiki komori"...but generally those types I've always thought to have some sort of productive ability (such as my cousin Toshihiko who wants to be a doctor). Of course, there's always agoraphobia.

Well the thing about Naruto and Inuyasha, is that there was so much filler because since it was just a moving adaptation of the comic book (I won't say the m word, they're fucking comic books) they ran out of material.
The books were still (and are, at least in naruto's case) being printed, so they have to come up with some crap, in order to wait for the comic book to progress more, so they know what to animate. One episode isn't the length of one comic, it's the length of three or four, so it takes some time in order to get their shit together.
Simplification - They eventually caught up to the comic, and didn't know what was going to happen, thus they didn't know what to do, so they made filler to wait.
