Are you going to compile your editorials and publish them as a book? I think it would be a great idea. I'd certainly buy it.

I've told him he should write stuff every day, compile it into a working manuscript for a book, and start contacting publishers. I think he ignored me when I suggested it though. I'm rather sure he probably gets contacted by publishers who want to publish this, though they're probably smaller publishers. After all, you can read them all for free, which really cuts into profits for a book without new material.

Well, maybe he could add extras and such to them? Something the online version doesn't have?
I would just like to be able to read them on the bus and such.

Putting it in a book would exponentially increase the chances of those mentioned in the editorials discovering that they are.

I love how he used the word "exponentially"

How about "quantifiably"...?

"Exponentially" is just a fun word to throw in once in a while, and can be pretty affective at scaring people.
"The enemie's army is growing exponentially!"

"The enemie's army is growing exponentially!"
"This wart on my ass is growing exponentially!"
Did I use it right?
And I concur, Az really should make a book form.

This is a question I get in, well, every other email these days.
I want to. But I still have to go through all the regular channels - contacting agents, sending queries, etc. I had one agent contact me, but we didn't quite work out.
I think the material could sell as is - but obviously it would be better with new stuff that people haven't read yet. And I have held back a lot of assorted things here and there, that if included in a book I feel would make it at least fresh to some degree. But again, it's just a matter of marketing to the right people.

Here's a question.
Az, have you ever considered going to a Hadaka Matsuri? :watson:

I think he worries about people grabbing him inappropriately enough as it is...
could be great material though...

I dunno, it's the whole concept of once a bad thing has been overplayed, it sort of just gets mild, even tolerable.
A Hadaka Matsuri will never be mild or tolerable. :watson:
You could always go through the self-publishing channels, like lulu.com
Honestly, as much as I like Azrael's editorials, rather than to have him jump through hoops to publish his book through publishers, I'd rather have him publish it himself. Chances are it will probably not be a big time publisher who can carpet bomb the Barnes and Nobles across America, and the problem with small publishers is that it's hard to track down copies as they don't have the budget to print a lot.
If he goes the self-publication routine, he could have the editorials available as it is right now, lest he chooses to edit it and add some new materials. Call me crazy, but I think the books will sell better than T-shirts.

The books WILL sell better than the T-shirts.
But one thing at a time. If he can do T-shirts well, publishing's the next step then?
I'd say it's time for Azrael to cash in the popularity of OP9 and make that his part time job. Sure, he would no longer have any social life, but who needs life when you have money?!

He hasn't gotten that big yet. Honestly, I do not think he's quite ready for this jump. He's a busy guy who just likes writing about the sillyness he experiences in Japan. A big step for him were the teeshirts. One step at a time. I think that he should publish, definitely, however even self publication is a daunting task, especially if you don't have the money or time for it. Sounds to me like he's lacking in both criteria right now.

Ask Mil Millington how he did it.

Very similar setup. Website gets popular, gets turned to book form.

Make sure to check the rights in regard to lulu.com. If, for instance, he publishes it there, does he sacrifice some or any of the rights to publish it to the site involved?

That would be for Azrael to check out, but they seem to offer a good deal, in terms of pricing/shipping&handling/and copyrights.

I did a google image search and it showed Japanese men with thongs.
That can't be a good thing :duh:

If you added in new stuff...hell, if you even just had the old stuff, I would buy that book as soon as I could. You could even have a fanmail/hatemail section at the back of your book where you post some of your favorite e-mails, like "Black Man Lies" and all the stuff asking about hooking up with Japanese girls.
I think your stuff is hilarious, and considering how I like to mention funny stories to my friends, they'd probably want to get the book too so they can see for themselves (they're not nearly as big on the internet as I am).
Of course, you would HAVE to admit what the octopus is. I'm still dying to know.

I think Az should try to parlay all this great writing experience/portfolio into a freelance writing career. There have got to be at least a few magazines out there that want a crazy person in Japan to write something once and a while.
Tim Rodgers ( www.insertcredit.com ) does something like this (he was just in Wired, that page about the crazy gaming acessories)

As far as I know, Lulu is a print-on-demand service that allows people who publish through them to retain all rights to their work.
