Ya, well, this is the thread for learning Japanese.
If noone helps. Than I'll just post from my "Practical Japanese" book, which looks like it was written in the 70's, in fact, if it was new, it would have come with 3 vinyls. :/
I bought it used though.

Heres three simple phrases:

Komban Wa: Good evening
Koniti wa:Hello, or Good Afternoon (ti makes a chi)
Ohayo Gozaimasu: Good Morning

Romaji (no n) isn't really Japanese. You at the very least need to learn the alphabet if you're trying to learn Japanese. It only takes about 2 weeks to learn both katakana and hiragana if you're serious.

You're right in theory, but in Japanese, "Rome" is called "Ro-ma." And, "romaji" means "roman letters."

But, that being said, Larrikin is right. If you really want to learn the language, the first thing to start with would be learning hiragana, then katakana.

Well, the best things to do would be to head to your closest Japanese book store (if you've got one) and pick up some simple workbooks.

Also, you'll want to download the Japanese language IME for Windows so you can read various Japanese texts.

You don't need the IME to read Japanese, just to type it. And once you have it setup, set Japanese as the default input locale. Trust me, you won't even notice, since it defaults to direct input, meaning it'll work like normal and let you type in English. Then you just hit alt + ~ to switch to hiragana input. I only share this information because I just recently learned it and it made things so much easier for me. I wish I would've learned it sooner.

But as for learning Japanese, you cannot get far w/out learning the kana. You really shouldn't try to learn w/ just romaji unless you're just looking for tourist phrases.

As for me, I've been studying (in spare time, on my own) for about 2yrs. Still, it's all book knowledge. While I can read reasonably well for the time I've put into it, I have no conversation skills. That's mostly due to lack of chances for Japanese conversation and laziness on my part. I'm going to be in Japan in just over a month, though... so now I'm getting nervous.

I know bad is Warui, and Ok is Daijobu.
I think how are you is something like Kanidesu ka?
or Genki desu ka?

I'd assume "I'm not well" would either be something like:

Honestly, I don't know what the 'natural' response would be. I don't think I've ever heard a Japanese person say they weren't feeling well. Heh.

Hmm... Actually... I'm not good with what's and why's... Maybe someone else should do that.

And yes's and no's... Hmm... There's always Hai for yes and Iie for no... Then theres the "Un" and "Uun" and "E" and "Ee" or whatever. I never could remember which was which and what was what because they sounded like random sounds. =P

About the paper thing though... Theres lots of words that are the same but mean multiple things... Like かえる（Kaeru)　means both "To return" and "Frog". Kind of like how "Can" in english means "To be able to", or it can be a cylinder object like a "can of tunafish". But in Japanese the words will usually have different Kanji... Like...

早い (Hayai:　Early)

I've heard this in many animes. I'm not sure how its pronounce but it's something like:
Yatta! or Yesa! or something. If you watch Naruto, Sakura says it. Also, if you've played Street Fighter II... Chun-Li says it when she wins.

Note: The reason I want to learn Japanese is NOT because of Anime. Just to clear things up.

For those of you who really wish to get hardcore about learning Japanese, I have found two of the most useful tools. JWPCe is a word processing program that can switch between Japanese and English without any crazy language pack installs. JFC is a Japanese Flash Card program that I have used a lot while studying words. You can make you own flash cards and flash till you are blue in the face. who hates romaji? let's have a show of hands! Note: I can't spell in english, so there may be mistakes in my english, i'll try to spellcheck my japanese.

because of this, let's just start with the most basic thing you should learnin japanese. KANA. Kana, is a term for 2 alphabets, Hiragana （ひらがな）　and Katakana (カタカナ）. they are both phonetic and much less inimidating than the third alphabet, Kanji (漢字) so let's learn some, shall we?

let's start with Hiragana and it's first few syllables. that's right, both ひらがな　and カタカナ are syllables, not letters.

for those of you whodon't know, they are pronounced as "short vowel" sounds in english. almost identically to how spanish vowels are pronounced.
practice these five and we'll have a test tommorrow. yay.

Can someone explain what voiced hiragana is, I understand the basics of it but i dont get where it would be uaed and what its for, I canm only tell the slight differnt pronounciation in them (the ga and ha comeong from differnt bits of the throat ect).

A good flashcard type flash game where you can choose what sets to learn, has hints as well, I ahve semi memorised the a,e,i,o,u symbols with it, 156 right to 12 wrong ~,^

Is something I've heard girls yell when they accomplish something. (don't know about anime)

やる(yaru) means 'to do,' like する(suru), but it's usually called 'vulgar.' That doesn't necessarily mean it's a dirty world (though it is used in the same way kids say 'do it' about sex) In some areas it's used almost in place of suru. So basically when they say やった, they're litterally saying 'I did it!,' though it's probably translated as 'Alright!' or 'yeah!.' It's also used to refer to feeding an animal. Go figure.

For another example of the 'suru' meaning of it, there's the phrase:
やって見ましょう
yatte mimashou
"Let's give it a try."

And if you study the kana, you'll realize that Japanese has a very limited syllabary to work with. It doesn't have nearly as many vowel or consonant sounds as English or other languages. That's why you get so much repetition in sounds. For instance, all these kanji have the reading of せい(sei):
性-Gender
正-Truth
制-System
聖-Holy
星-Star
生-Life

(going off memory and IME there, but should be accurate)

As for word processing, once you have the Microsoft IME installed, it's real easy to switch to Japanese. And the best thing (w/ WinXP at least) is that you can use the same IME in every Windows app that supports Japanese. Meaning, you don't have to rely on a word processor to input Japanese into Photoshop, IE, etc. Also, you can use Word, which is pretty good w/ Japanese.

Quick note: when somebody asks you 元気ですか？ it's not usual to reply with anything other than a variation of 元気です unless you know them. I mean, if you were to greet an acquaintance in the morning with, "Hey, how are ya," would you really expect a response like, "Well, since you asked, I'm actually having a herpes relapse"? :) It's just polite discourse (「社交礼儀」 shakou reigi) and only taken literally amongst people that know each other relatively well.

As for "why," the normal ways of saying it would be the two mentioned above, but the primary/usual one is　「どうして」. 「なぜ」 is a bit stranger (for some reason) in that you usually use it to add a little nuance to your sentence... kinda hard to explain. 「なんで」 is really only used in informal speech, or if you're from Kansai. And then, the inflection of tone is put on the で instead of the なん. Don't even try a kansai accent... most people would just laugh :)

Hell, despite the fact that my family is from Kansai, even I sound stupid when I force the accent. When I'm hanging around people shooting off in kansai-ben, then it comes out naturally (「な～にゆっとんねん！こうたらええやん！」　which would be 「なに言ってんの？買ったらいいじゃん！」 in Tokyo). I love kansai-ben :D Except when my grandma scolds me :( Kansai women are skerry...

誰もをわからないだろうと思った。　The hosts of Heyx3 speak Kansai-ben, don't they? I can never understand them. But I guess those fears were pretty much unfounded. So would you compare the difference between Kansai and Tokyo-ben as the difference between American and British English?

The differences are even more pronounced, I think. But it really depends on the region of Kansai you are talking about. Kansai-ben gets lumped all together, but every city, just about, has it's own version. Osaka-ben is fairly different than, say, Hiroshima-ben.

And yeah, Downtown (hosts of Hey Hey Hey) speak kansai-ben, but they're pretty rambunctious, for lack of a better word. There are "cleaner" forms of kansai-ben (they speak in a really slang-laden, not-for-use-in-polite-company way), but the rough kansai-ben is the most fun :)

Really? Hm... "Yaru" is used in Tokyo as well, but it is pretty informal.

In most areas of kansai, they say "ya" instead of "da" at the end of sentences, though... maybe that's what you mean. Like 「そうなんや。」 instead of 「そうなんだ。」

No, I know about 'ya' instead of 'da...' I dunno. I read so much stuff I don't know where I thought I heard 'yaru' is more common in Kansai.

Yeah, it's informal. やる = する. Has a rougher sound to it, though.

Oh, and be careful with "yaru," though... because it can also mean to have sex.

But, if a guy turns to you and says, 「やるか！？」 you can trust that he's not inviting you for a night of sweet, sweet loving. No. He's asking you if you want to take it outside, essentially.

Actually, おにいさん should be あに (ani) to keep in line with the rest. Oniisan is what you would call your older brother, or what you would say when referring to other people's older brothers.

Also, 孫(まご) is how you say "grandchild" without specifying male or female.

Your 9 is incorrect :D (We're getting into a pattern here...)

It's right when you attach the "つ" counter to 9, but 9 by itself is 九(きゅう) - Kyuu.

Oh, and the kanji for 10 is 十. For 11, just put the kanji for 10, then 1 = 十一. That continues all the way to 19... For 20, its 2 then 10 = 二十. Simple, eh?

Normally an extended "o" sound is represented like it would be in Hiragana. For example:

おとうと <-- Otouto

The OO usually becomes an Ou... Except when it begins a word (Like Ookii and Ookami).

Because I believe (and I could be *completely* wrong here... like I've said before, my Japanese goes based on feeling) 寝ていなかった is past-perfect tense. That would be like saying, "I wasn't sleeping."

If you want to say "I haven't slept," you would say "寝ていない"

Yeah, I actually knew that. My uncle was in Japan in the 80's, stationed on a USAF base. He was telling me what Japanese he remembered, that I should know, and he was using 'benjo.' I was laughing because I knew it was like saying 'crapper.'

のろい has the connotation of weakness or being slow mentally. You hear that word a lot in manga, anime, and games, where Evil Badguy will taunt Hero when they first fight and Hero is not powerful enough to take him down. Evil Badguy will usually let out a maniacal laughter and shout, "ぶわっはっはっは！のろいわ！" and then subsequently beat Hero within an in of his life, but leave him alive to let his underlings dispose of him (after which point, Hero's friends will come in and miraculous save him).

Hmm... For まってられません。。。 Is there really a られる　added to it? Since it's a Yodan verb don't you just change it to まてる (from まつ）　and then to まてません？

So -たらいいなと思う is how you say you hope something happens? Will be very useful to me. -Runs off- Late now. xD

The られる was added simply to enforce the act of doing (over a period of time). If you cannot まってられる, that means you are current in the process of waiting, but cannot bear it much longer. To simply say まてません implies a more finite and immediate act, as in "I will stop waiting this moment." The difference is not *that* pronounced, as it is simply a nuance, but that should help your understanding.

The -たらいいなとおもう might be a bit casual to be of use in, say, a Japanese class. It's used in speech, even somewhat formal speech (though it would be in -desu -masu form), but not really in writing. When you hope something happens, it's really a case by case basis on how to word it =\

But in all seriousness, there's no hard rule. In fact, there are playful nuances that can be used (for example, my friend at work refers to all the guys and girls in our group, despite everyone being in their late 20's, as 女の子・男の子).

But, I'll do my best:

女 - Woman, somewhat rude. Never call someone "onna" to their face. Mostly used among friends (「あの女がさ．．．」)
女の子 - Girl. Can be used in just about every way the English "girl" can be used. Mostly denotes someone pretty young, but can sometimes be used playfully to refer to female friends that are relatively young.
女性 - Female, polite/neutral. This is the default word you should use when speaking about women in general. Or you could also use 女の人, but I find 女性 is easier to use.
女子 - Hm... it means "girl," but it has a, hm... how do I put it... slightly more technical (???) feel. Usually used when talking about groups of people, like when splitting up into guy and girl teams. 女子チーム・男子チーム。
女の人 - Woman, polite/neutral. Generic way of saying "adult female."

The pretty much exact same applies to males.

I read books, listen to music and watch the occasional Japanese movie or newscast... Other than that, this is the most conversation practice I've had in years. So far I haven't really lost anything... I just haven't been making very rapid progress...

Ooh... Neat... I have the second, third, and fourth ones... But also a book on verbs, a book on particles, and then I ordered that Basic Grammar Dictionary something that everyone suggested but I have to wait until Amazon needs to backorder it.

And h2orowe: Amazon allows you to order by check if that's an option. (Well, all the items that ship directly from Amazon, and a couple different places... Like Toys'R'Us). But yeah, bookstores are another option.

And some highschool classes aren't that great... Like the teacher I had for first and second year we learned... VERY basic grammar (just like the masu forms), about 5 Kanji, and about 100 words... In two years. But now she's the school admin person and our teacher we had for 3rd year totally changed and we learned hundreds of kanji, vocab, and lots of new grammar (though not enough, but it was quite a lot for one year of highschool)... But he didn't do much repetition... It was like 8 Kanji a week, and every 5th week we'd have a 40 kanji review test, and then we'd never use those Kanji again. So I guess it all depends on the teacher... But don't feel you're missing TOO much not having a high school class. =P

I did also meet with two others studying and one native speaker for about a year... It was cool, but I'd have gotten a whole lot more out of it if I had done the basics on my own and met w/ the native speaker when I knew enough to begin conversing. *shrug*
