There have been alot of people here in this Forum who (still) love playing Super Smash Bros and Super Smash Bros: Melee.

If you are one of those people, state your best characters, battle tactics, and whatnot.

Best of the Best:
Link
Marth
Young Link
Ganondorf

Minor, Yet I Still Own With 'Em:
Dr. Mario
Mario
Kirby
Mewtwo

I'll see you once I can get the Revolution included with WiFi.

I'm referring to N64 version.

In general I'm a player who relies on speed to whale on an opponent with low-damage moves and finish him off when his damage goes high enough. I rely very heavily on throws, and smash moves.

Best characters:
Kirby (very quick, great smash move, decent throw)
Falcon (very versatile, nice special moves)
DK (great throws)
Pikachu (for speed)
Fox (for speed)
(in roughly that order)

Bad characters:
Link (throw too slow, doesn't suit my style)
Samus (see above)
Jigglypuff (basically a poorer version of Kirby unless you mastered the sleep move)
Ness (really hard to use)
Mario (annoying)
Luigi (annoying)
Yoshi (really hard to use)

Captain Falcon > all those other bullshit characters

Although I enjoy every character in one way or another. Pichu, Marth, Roy, Donkey Kong, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Mr. Game And Watch and Kirby are my other strong characters. I'm average with the rest.

Anyone got stretegy in finishing Event Match #51? The one where you have to fight Giga Bowser, Ganondorf and Mewtwo at the same time?

I used Jigglypuff for that one.

People tell me that Kirby, Mewtwo, and Jigglypuff are best for #51. I just used Captain Falcon.

p.s. Pink and white.

I had troubles using Mewtwo the first time and the next.

I just used Jigglypuff's Rest of DEATH on Giga Bowser (and managed to get the latter two inexpectedly). To kill off the other two, I just used Rollout.

Best Character: Fox McCloud
Strategy: Annoy

Ness is the best for annoying especially in multiplayer battles. Stay away from the action and take random pot shots into the melee with the homing lightning. Then when they get pissed and go after you either hit them with your bat or zap yourself into them. His regular B-move is annoying too since it immobilizes you after you get hit by it.

...too bad I suck at him.

Dead Sexy Vocab

It's annoying when you PLAY as Ness, too.

I deem him way less annoying than Yoshi. At least the Green Mophukka can jump.

What do you guys think of the recycling of attack moves (Captain Falcon > Ganondorf, Mario > Dr. Mario, Link > Young Link, etc etc)?

It got kinda repetitive with all the same moves, and whatnot.

I just hope they create more ideas and attacks specifically for each caracter, to the upcoming SSB game for Revolution.

And that's why Marth is my second best.

Whenever I fight Level 9 Computers, they always fall for the Counter-Smash, Counter-Smash, Counter-Smash technique I used for their first couple of stock. Then, around the last 5, they end up smartening up and grab me any chance they get.

Marth

Jethrokun.. Nice try ^^
My best time for event 51 was with Marth on 1 minute 52 seconds.

My tactic is similar to yours, but I wavedash a hell of a lot, roll and most of all, jump into Giga Bowser and do the double slash in midair. Makes him fly nice and far by using the already done damage in the first second. I dunno, I just dont like staying back and charging up my moves. Last two guys arent worth the effort.
Tis more fun when you are totally in the fray XD

Of course, there was luck in it too with all the items and that damn HORDE of bob-ombs

My tactics with Marth on a 1 on 1 involve hella juggling. Forward slash in midair, force myself down, jump and exactly as i jump, i smash down and hit A to send them to the floor. Alsso is a great interception when they try to come back. Takes a lot of skill to pull it off without killing yourself too ^^

And ya, counter is not for 1 on 1, but instead for melee an all that junk.
PALADIN MARTH FTW!

Other best characters:
Sheik (The speed and how much you can juggle and how FAST is nuts)
Jigglypuff (Down + B is my specialty. I never miss it ^^)
Young Link (Long range, when used to your advantage is awesome. I like pulling out a bomb and pissing people off by jumping around above em and toying with them till i actually throw it down and follow up with a down A XD)

And yes, I will take all of you on happily ^^

Nobody's said Samus. Yeah. Samus is my girl.

My "strategy" is button mashing-punching-bag, finishing most matches with much too much damage. I don't aim for "pwning"; see the last videogame thread... When I'm winning, I crank up the handicap. When I'm loosing I just go on and on until I start winning. Even if it’s because of my opponent’s fatigue.

I did beat 51, with Samus, though I doubt I was anywhere near that fast. Or maybe I was... my time perception sucks. It was good, masochistic fun.

I also play Roy a bit... Fire Emblem (the first one out here "Fire Emblem") bein' my second favoritest game (after Super Metroid). Though, picking Fire Emblem characters, I wouldn't have picked Roy...
Oooooh, boy, I hope they get some better ones in there.

Fa, Fae, whatever... Yeah. Badass.
Gonzales, the fugly.
Hector, they gotta put in Hector, I'd call that a distinct possibility...
Florina would pose some interesting combat tacics... though I'd like to see her in there even if they didn't allow her peg.
Wee Amelia grew into a big, badass knight pretty fast... she was very amusing as a rookie, wielding a pike twice as tall as she was. I'd put that in.
Can't think of anyone from the newest game (it is a shame it was not more ambitious, going from handheld to console)... maybe one of the bird men, but only from a gameplay standpoint.
Mega Man.

Third thing, anyone else think Captain Falcon in pink and white is… “Chronic”?

SSB There is only ONE character that owns all, and that's falcon, his juggles beat everyone, the damage he deals it's alot with great knockback, and it only takes 1 second away from the edge and your ass will get the monkey stomp to your death.

However in SSBM, they nerfed and fucked him in the ass, so I hated him, got roy, loved him, but realized that marth was the falcon replacement, same tactices, nice tip of the sword action and you'll own everything, HOWEVER, only on close quarters, I found the hardest time trying to keep up with a random player on the zelda level while his ass played as kid link, little bastard, we ended in a tie, then it was my turn to pick the level, kirby's level was his death in less than 5 minutes, however we do not play with items, ever, and only a 15 men limit.

If you want to go for pissing someone off, jiggy poof! Simple tactics, take a beating, and down + B, or just hold B and charge them, since you can control yourself.

I think I'll spin the game up tonight and check for my homerun scores, I can't remember any of them since it's been over 9 months since I played(RE4, and no one wants to play me cause they are all poor loosers -.-)

Ah another aspect of my style... suicidal. Normally I start out really aggressively taking my opponent by surprise and kill him several times, but I can never maintain that level of concentration. So once I have a buffer of several lives I start going all suicidal on his ass. Like throwing bobombs at him from point-blank or something he wouldn't expect.

General_Failure
02-11-2006, 04:17 PM
I love playing against people who throw stuff as marth, or samus(like you'll ever get time to charge it), but his counter is the best defence against all that, unless you're talking about getting in their face and throwing the bomb at the floor, and even that's useless since marth's smash is a 70 degree hit foward, and the tip will always connect with a good player, out of AoE range .-. Oh and play roy and counter someone with a hammer, that's hillarious, they die instead since it returns all damage and then some with his counter, I've never seen or been able to counter jiggy puffs death move with roy, it's possible but you would have to have the timing perfect.

When you said suicide I thought you meant like DK or Kirby, eat or grab and walk off the edge, which usually ends in your death since you can shake out of it >.>

Big link players are funny to play against, since he's freaking slow and drops like a rock, he's a marth players wet dream XD little link...that little bastard is an annoyance

Favorite Smash moments:

Synchronized dancing: Me and a friend (the only guy who beats me really often) were playing an all-Kong match, and at one point we realized we played each other so often we were too familiar with each other's styles and started to negate each other. We tried to grab each other, missed, dodged past each other and turned, grabbed and missed, dodged past each other AGAIN, grabbed and missed again, and then both did the down+A spinning move at EXACTLY the same time. The other two guys who were playing fell down laughing.

Flying Kongs: From the same match, all four Kongs had astronomic damage, suddenly a bobomb appears in the middle of the room. Three of the Kongs make a mad dash for it, and you see 3 Kongs reaching for the bobomb at the same time. Then me (the suicidal one) drop from the platform above with a flying down+A. All four of us fly straight up and become 'stars' at exactly the same time.

Narrow loss: Me and my friend were both on one life and high damage. I hit him with a Falcon up+A in the air, and send him flying into space. To celebrate, I run all over the level and run into a mine that he planted earlier, and I fly off the edge of the level just a split-second before he turns into a star. :(

My fave char is Luigi, the ninja mario brother XD or marth.

A few of my favorite things to do are take on three level 9's at a time. Its hard but I got used to it after awhie.

And then The level 18 challange

What you do is this, turn on handicap, put your handicap to 1, put one level 9 com's handicap to 9. (Basicaly level 18) I did this with gannondorf, couldnt kill him once. Me and three of my level 1 handicap friends took him on, we were lucky to kill him once. I suggest hyrule castle for this, a big course for when the com sends you flying. Anyway im done. *Wanders*

gyoza
02-11-2006, 07:55 PM
You mean three level 9's on the same team with team damage off? Yeah it's pretty hard but quite manageable as long as you don't take all of them head-on at once. I usually run to one side of the level, and since the characters run at different speeds. Usually by the time the second guy gets to me the first guy has already died. :)

And yes, level 18 challenge is near impossible. I can kill the opponent several times with items on, but the general consensus seems to be that items are lame, so meh.

Glad to see some people who use items. Usually we just switch everything on and medium appearance, but we sometimes customize the items depending on our mood. What are some of your favorite combinations?

All pokeballs: Mass chaos!

Hammers/mines: Hammers are overpowered. But since there are so many mines, they negate the hammer's effectiveness because people are too scared to pick them up. It's fun!

Oooh, golly, digital distribution on the Rev... that'll be sweet.
No crappy computor, no shady ROM sites (it only bothers me when they promise no porn pop-ups, then naked Sailor Moon pops up), no confusing emulators... I hope they do this well.

I dislike items for the sole reason that i dont like chance having anything to do with skill. You could be an awesome player and get beaten by some cracktard who is going nuts with a hammer and multiple poke-balls. I dont mind items when i play, but to be totally honest, it just makes it easier for me to win ¬_¬

Also, training against level 9 opponents or multiple level 9 opponents is not the way to train if you have no one around. As lame as it sounds, the training mode is actually the best way to train in that game. Wont say why, but thats where I train and it really made a huge difference to my agility and aim.

Even with items, me and my friend figured out a way to prevent noobs from beating us with hammers and pokeballs.

The most basic way is to plant mines at item spawn points (of course remember where you put them). When running for an item the noob will likely get himself killed. My friend has also mastered the timing to smash-attack a hammer wielder exactly as his hammer is the far side from you. I can do it too sometimes, but with nowhere near his consistency.

By the way, I forgot how to get Marth.
Character Unlock: Marth: To unlock Marth from the Fire Emblem series, play Classic mode with all 14 regular characters (not ones you've unlocked). Marth will then challenge you; beat him to gain him as a selectable character.
Character Unlock: Marth - method 2: Alternatively, you can simply use every character as a human player in VS. Mode, and get a challenge from Marth that way...
Marth: 400 vs. matches (http://http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/code/516492.html)

I had my data erased a couple times... don't think I have all the stages anymore, and I never did get all the trophies...

As to the items, is it so bad when a n00b gets one or two kills with a hammer?
It's no fun if they can't touch you at all, and they're less likely to keep playing...

Burgers.

Is it just me, or is a noob with hammers and pokeballs still just as weak as a noob without items? It's easy as hell to avoid someone who has a hammer. Sames goes for all but two or three of the pokemon. And unless you have a huge handicap (or unless the noob has been kicking your ass around) those things won't send you flying anyways.

gyoza
02-14-2006, 02:04 AM
Well, it depends really. A hammer can be hell to avoid on a really small stage, like Kirby's Dream Land (N64). Though I will agree that a noob who doesn't know how to use items will still never win.

With regards to speed it depends on your fighting style. I use throws a lot, so even though Samus is faster than Kong, I kick more ass with Kong.

Sigh, I had typed almost two full pages about this game, and it took over 45 minutes, but when I went to post it, something screwed up and the post was lost. Ugh. I am very passionate about this game, and I had alot to say.

Long story short:
I compete, we only use items while having fun, Final is only for a select few characters, Fox is for noobs, Shiek is my best (but I dont like using her, because even I think she is kind of cheap too), we only play on lightning melee because normal is too slow, Yoshi is the best for event match 51 (just try it, as far as overall power goes, Yoshi is the best char in the game. He is only really bad because his recovery is so terrible), and I love making people who talk mad trash cry.

Saying you are a pro with Fox is like saying you are a pro at zipping your fly after peeing.

Yeah Shiek rocks... I suppose you think he is nooby because he can juggle an almost infinite times? Or is it the ranged weaponry? XD

I love making people who talk mad trash cry.
Amen to that... We have a lunchtime games club in my school, and we always play SSBM there. I get trash talked so much its really funny. I did what any sane person would do to shut them up...

I challenged them to a 3 on 1 in final destination using no items and i pretty much kicked their asses. The second best player i know, and the 4th best player i know took me on a 2 on 1 multiple times. Its good training. I won about 4 times outta 10 XD. Stupid ranged weapons ¬_¬

Saying you are a pro with Fox is like saying you are a pro at zipping your fly after peeing.

I havent really played the melee version, but in the original Hyrule was the most spread out level with the most room to fight in, that's why I liked it best. Sure the Starfox level was long too, but you had that huge drop and it was to uneven. I always wanted a level where you couldnt fall down, it was just a beatdown area to see how high you can get that damage % and send the enemy flying into the air. :D

honestly, for stages, kirby's old set I love, since it's cramped, and that's where characters like marth excel, also final destination and the one before that, standing on ledges(kirby and the one before final dest, name allueds me) with other characters against marth is stupid idea since the tip of the sword is the exact spot of your feet, which makes you fly then the juggle to a slam down death. .-.

Although I only used her to juggle the fuck out of my friend, whom I thoroughly kicked his ass with.

Link, Marth, Young Link, and Ganondorf pour moi, merci.

Battlefield is what you are thinking of. Shiek is one of the most powerful characters in the game, and can be SUPER cheap, due to the fact that she can start a juggle combo at around 15% and kill you before you can touch the ground. No matter what character you are.

Fox is slow as all hell.. I think you're talking about Falco.. I know too many people that play with Falco and it really annoys me

Unfortunatly, this statement is incorrect... Fox has the second fastest run speed and fastest walk speed of all characters. His smashes execute faster and send you farther than almost every other comparable smash in the game. (Almost all of them, on lightning, have an execute time of less than 0.1 seconds each) Falco is a slower, longer ranged, higher jumping, super spiking, worse recovering clone of Fox. I no longer count him as a character that needs to be worried about, because he simply cant get back on the stage once knocked off. The spike is super easy to read, and easier to avoid if you know what you are doing.

Marth is a solid character, but only really because of his forward smash. The "Arc of the Nepitishim", as we call it, has one of the most rediculous hitboxes in smash history, and the farther away you are from it, the worse it hits. Almost all of Marth's attacks set you up for his smash, which is his most devistating attack. Fighting against Marth simply requires a little patience- all you need to do is draw an Arc out, and hit him as he recovering from it. The recovery time is such that you should be able to get a hit in while he is reverting back to his base stance.

I have long since decided that the origional smash is no longer worth playing. The game itself is extremely unbalanced and no longer entertaining to play. Not to mention slowdowns and crap-tastic response times from button presses and joystick movements... :bang:

In the original, I like Kirby and Ness. I made a pretty good Ness for a while. In Melee, I play Falco and sometimes Roy. I like Falco mainly because I put the settings on Japanese, do his taunt, and freak out , going all fangirl. No, I don't like furries, I just happen to think his voice is sexy. haha.

Seriously, I'm not TERRIBLE one-on-one, but completely lose in Melee. I overall am not too great at the game even though it was my very first gamecube game and I played it religiously when I was 16. heh.

NECRO-BUMP'D!!

If I could get a new controller (my current one fucking broke), could someone tell me how I can "wavedash"?

Oh, and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5DFuy3QnpE&search=super%20smash%20brothers) is a video to curb your thoughts about your fastest time in Target Contests.

1) Marth (long reach ftw)
2) Fox (my moves are faster and better than yours)
After those two there is a little bit of a drop.
3) Samus (best on the ground down smash ever)
4) Dr. Mario (gives people some 'medicine')
5) Mr. Game and Watch (just fun to play; bucket ftw)

Those are the people I am best with but I'll go random for fun a lot.

Fox is still my #1 and I'm getting better at using *his* non-smash attacks. I realized that when you used those you can make some pretty long combos that can end in up-kick-related death.

Falcon's my one to terrorize people with though. Knees and justice stomps out of NOWHERE MWAAHHAHAHA

kirby is the best....

Oh! and those who said Link is bad char and blah....let me say you're a n00b....Link is my secret deadly weapon to kick some asses...Link is just for pros, no doubt about it....

I'm best with Kirby and slowly getting even better with Zelda.

The Zelda strategy is not easy, so she's still second.
First I kick some butts as Shiek, then change to Zelda and try to kick my opponent of the cliff, before he comes back I change to Shiek and hold the Chain over the cliff, so that he can't get a grip and that's it.

Not only is that what I call "gay tactics", but also what I call "tactics that will get you jumped right quick"

Whatever, those tactics are fine. Shiek/Zelda is easy to beat down.

First best: Link
Secon best: everyone else
Strategy with link: use all moves possible to accumulate damage at all costs, stay alive with my mad skills, never ever use the bow, evade attacks with guarding/rolling.
Sheik is the cheapest character in the game, and I disregard the skill of anyone who plays him because of that. All other characters have at least some weakness. As for Young Link, as evidenced by the event mode match, his small reach makes it almost impossible to hit Link/Marth/Roy/ anyone with a good sized reach.
Last thing: could anyone give me some tips on the Pickachu and Pichu event mode fight and the Luigi vs Peach+Dr.Mario event fight? The pokes just kill me dead and Luigi is the worst char in the game.

For someone talking about a character so out of balance she nearly matches the old kirby (Fox has the infinite, but whatever), you say that with exceptional confidence.

SSBM and SSB are my favorite games. Wouldn't of got the cube if it wasn't for Melee.

I use Dr. Mario and Mario a lot. Best moves are the forward a attack, b up attack, and forward b attack where you reflect the objects that are thrown at you. And don't underestimate Jigglypuff either. Can't go wrong with her b up and b down attacks.

Use Ganondorf (or any other Power-Houses in the game) to use big hits on the Pichu. Try and connect the hits as accurately as possible, and always try to dodge (or mid-air dodge) the Pichu's Thunder Jolts... yeah, they pretty much fuckin' pissed me off the first time I tried that Event Mode.

For the Dr Mario + Peach Event, use the Luigi Cyclone and go back and forth throught the latform. Like, when he starts spinning, move the analog stick back and forth, Luigi goes ridiculously fast when he's doing it.

And, if you're quick enough, use the Luigi's Super Jump Move, where they combust and all.

HOLY SHIT!!!

It's just simple, really...

Jump Young Link to a wall, and when he's just on it, quickly turn the analog stick to the opposite of the wall. He'll then jump off, and if there's another in front of him, touch the wall and turn the analog stick to the opposite, and he'll hop off again. For this, though, make sure he is AT LEAST touching any wall, in which he would jump off easily.

Other than Young Link... I think Samus, Fox, Captain Falcon, Mario, and Sheik can do this trick also... But Young Link can do it better. Why? The game was designed that way. Plus, Young Link is the shit. :P

Unlikely, Sheik has faster attack speeds than falcon. This is especially true against something as laggy as his specials.

Thanks vocab, I'll try that next time I've got the cube out. Also, agreed, I bought the cube for melee as well. And jiglypuff is possible the most annoying but funny character ever. Bitch slaps you around and it's friggin PINK!

True, but not if you use forshadowing. For example, if you can get the exact frame rate of Falcons B andmemorize it, combine that with a mid air executuion and you get a very effective strategy.
