I have been participating in forum discussions for a relatively short period of time - about 2 years now. One of the most enjoyable things that I have done in forum discussion is play "forum games". Some sites have sub-forums devoted specifically to these games.
My favorite among forum games is Mafia. For those not in the know, Mafia is a game of deduction, deceipt, and misonformation. Normal-sized games usually involve 20-26 players that make up a town. The job of the town is to eliminate the mafia members in the town. The town's tool in doing this is the lynch. Each person in the town can vote and unvote for another player to lynch for that particular Day. Once a majority is reached, that player swings from the gallows, and the game shifts into Night.
During the Night, the townies cannot post in the thread or discuss the game outside the thread - unless they are given a special role that states otherwise. Also during the night, the mafia can discuss the game outside the thread (through AIM, e-mail, telephone, telegraph, carrier pigeon, or whatever means they choose) and decide on a member of the town to kill.
Some townies have actions that they perform at night. The two most basic townie roles with night actions are the Cop and the Doctor. The Cop can investigate another person and determine if he is good or bad. The Doctor can protect another player from harm during the night - making that other player immune to night kills for that night.
Another possible (and very common) role is Serial Killer. The SK can eliminate one person during each Night. His victory condition is to eliminate all other players - which is pretty difficult to do without being killed in the process, either by mafia at night or the town as a whole during the day.
Would anyone be interested in playing a game of mafia here on OP9?
