View Full Version : Whoa, A Girl Just Died Here...

My roommate told me when I woke up this morning that a girl in Harner Hall died (it's next door to us) and that they don't what happened to her yet.

Freaky. There's rumors circulating that when they found her there was "stuff" around her nose and mouth. Kristin (my roommate) didn't know whether the "stuff" was blood or mucus or drugs. I asked her what she and her friends thought of it, and they came the conclusion it was either an overdose (intentional or not) or possibly a seizure.

It wasn't on the news-- it didn't make Pittsburgh death/murder/suicide of the day-- so I haven't been able to find much about it yet.

It's just freaky. Weird shit seems to follow me no matter where I go. I thought I left these creepy deaths back in the country, but no, they followed me to college, too, it seems.

I wonder who she was. I'll have to grill people later about it. I doubt anyone will know her name before the parents are informed, but I can get at least paint a picture of what the hell happened.

Pittsburgh? Do you go to UPitt? I have a lot of friends in the Japanese program there.

And it sucks when people die.

Nah, SRU-- Slippery Rock University. We're about an hour above Pittsburgh depending on weather and traffic. About twenty minutes from Butler, PA.

Yeah, it does. I'm kind of used to it (morbid and sad, I know, but true), so I wasn't shocked or surprised much. I still haven't found out a whole lot; it doesn't seem the majority of people know yet.

I'll grill my roommate when she gets back from classes.

Dude, I do not in any way mean to sound callous or cold hearted. Did you know this girl? Not that life is in any way a cheap thing, but really. I'm an Army medic, and most of the medics who get back (from down-range), they are THERE with the person when they died. Died a horrible and traumatic death. If you ask any one of them, who knew, worked with the deceased in the body bag, they say all you can do is drive on. It sucks that mortality has taken somebody at your college before their time, but all you can do is put some kiwi (boot wax) on it and drive on.

Slipper Rock, hmm... I'm not too far south of that, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Holy crap, add another Pittsburgher to the list. This forum has an unusually high number of Western PA folks :eyepop:

Sorry about the friend. And I did not understand the Hall or something, can someone just simplify it for the ordinary layman to understand?

Okay, so let's say that a million people die of smoking every year. Does that mean all one million people will be reported in the news? Didn't mean to sound heartless on that one.

Oh, no, I know how you feel.

I'm sad that she died, but I don't really feel upset about it. I'm too used to people dying, I guess. I see people crying about her and I ask them if they know her, and most didn't even know she existed until the heard. I'm like, "Uh, why are you crying then?" And they said just because it was sad, which I don't get.

I don't get emotional about things, especially things like this. I'm just not fazed anymore by it.

I'm becoming Hawkeye... Good grief.

"One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic." Yup, you were right, Stalin, you were right.

In case anyone is wondering, what happened was that the girl-- Laura-- had a really bad cold on top of asthma, so she went to go lay down in her room. When no one had seen her for awhile, a few of her friends knocked on the door and could hear her wheezing. The door was locked and they couldn't get in. Laura didn't have a roommate, so they had to find the CA. Well, the CA didn't have the keys, so he had to find the building manager person. It took them a half hour to get the keys, and by the time the opened the door, she was already dead.

She was going to turn nineteen on the twenty-fifth, too. She was a Rehabilitative Sciences major with a Physical Therapy minor. She was going to help people get their lives back, so-- of course-- she lost hers.

I hate irony. It's embittered me so.

Sorry to hear that. I'm also in Pittsburgh, and haven't heard this on the local news. Slippery Rock looks like a good school.

It is always tough when someone close to you dies... When I was in college a girl pretty close to me died. We had taken a road trip together to William and Mary from UDel, she was awesome, and I never knew about her heart till it happened... Apparently she had some heart defect that meant she could die at any time if her heart just decided to stop working right. I wasn't with her at the time, no one was... But still, that shit hit me harder than 9/11.
