Something I didn’t think off hit me today, a question I didn’t have answer to about Japan. Especially Kyoto, while being in the emergency with a friend that cracked the back of his head after head butting the pole that holds the rim and net at a street basked game. Where do you get your hair cut, are there barbershops for black people or do you just shave it off when ever it get too long or do you go to the Japanese barbers and freak them out with our thick, bush hair. As I’m going to live there for a more then a year, I was wondering if there other alternative then getting a great haircut, then waiting 6 month before you go back home to get new one? I must say that would be an expensive haircut :D
just curious

Buy your own clippers, and do it yourself.
Even if you did find a barber in Japan who could cut your hair (I had problems finding good barbers back in the states), it's pretty expensive.

No, but I wanted to throw M&Ms at him. Anyway, he was 3-4 rows ahead of me, and it was still encroching on my view!

Is it just me, or does that seem like way too much trouble?
If I looked half decent with no hair, I'd shave my head. But I don't.

actually I havent had a hair cut in like 5 years because of the flowbee, it works well for cutting my hare, but I dont do anything extravagant. I also don't have to waste $10 on a hair-cut or take the time to go somewhere, I can just do it myself. Works great for my dad and I, however probably not if you have really thick hair or you are a woman.

Yeah. I got a 40-piece clipper set and a small 'stache/edger. So I can either just quick cut and go, or if I want to take the time, I can fade and line, and all that stuff all by myself. Initial cost was a little high, but the money saved is tremendous.

As a black man I like to do lots of research before I travel whether it be Japan or the west coast for that matter. Remind me one day to tell ya about the time me and my homiez ran into some bloodz in San dieago.
And yes us northern eastcoast catz are hated on everywhere.

Q) Where can I get my hair cut/done?
A) Because of the voltage difference, clippers from the states will emit a high pitched whine when you use them, but you can still use them if you can stand the noise. The best is if you have multi-voltage hair clippers and cut your own hair. If you know someone or have access to one of the military bases you can get it done cheaply there. Also there are only a few places in Tokyo to get a “STATESIDE” haircut. Try Room 806 in Tokyo. For women, there are more options, unless you have extensions or want your hair braided. In which it is VERY expensive to maintain in Japan. It would be wise to either stockpile the products you just can’t “live” without, or make arrangements to have them sent to you. Nowadays, it is getting easier to get “urban” hair products since it is popular to sport the latest ‘Do’s in African American fashion. But the price will be more then you’re accustomed to.

There are shops in Tokyo that specialize in black hairstyles, but ironically their advertisements are not aimed at black people but instead at Japanese kids who want black hairstyles. It seems like they would be able to cut your hair, but its Japan, so who knows. Incidentally, I`d say that 95% of the black men I have seen in Japan have shaved heads. Of course that may just be a summer thing because its like 95 degrees here just about everyday. Good luck.
I brought my clippers from the states and I use them every day. They work just fine, but I`m not really sure why. There is a voltage difference between the U.S. and Japan, but some items (like Playstation 2- bring it, you`ll be glad you did) seem to work just fine despite the difference.

Men's haircuts aren't that expensive. When I lived in Nara and Tokyo it wasn't too hard to find places that would do it for under 2000 yen. But I'm white so ymmv.
Is it just me, or does that seem like way too much trouble?

hmmmm it's not bad. 1-2hrs for a week. People that braid their hair or style spend about the same. And actually once it's pressed for the week it's alot easier to mantain. I don't have to do sh** ^^.
or a 5 second comb in the morning. When I had a fro, oh jeez like 15 minutes on the bus ride to school picking it out. I just hate getting burned in the scalp!
Yeah if I do study abroad It would be nice to keep my hair. I'd like to see Japanese people's reactions to it. I need to get a picture with my hair down(which is how it almost always is).

I always shave my head, basicly, just wake up 15 minutes earlier then your accustomed to and get the blade going! It's easy, gives me a nice fresh look every morning, and I wouldn't do it different if I were in Japan.

When i was in osaka back in 99'.....i just wore a fro...cause it did cost a nice amount of cash to get a guy who knew what he was doing to cut my hair....i did find a black guy who did cut hair on weekends.....but he left for tokyo....meeh...so i would just shave and keep my sideburns Short.
But ya....Buy clippers....With guides of course so ya can fade.
