View Full Version : A little Japanese Help, Please
Ok, really quick. How do you say "I started traveling when I was two" in Japanese? I just don't know how to put "when I was two" in there. I don't need anything crazy complicated, and I don't want ppl saying "well, it's kinda awkward that way, you should say it more like "blahilghaghe", it's more sophisticated. I dont' want sophisticated, I want....Japanese 2 level. Talk like you're 10. :-P Thanks everyone.

Can anyone translate this?

I know it's the lyrics to Shanghai Honey by Orange Range. The only reason I am asking this is my wife heard the song when I was listening the Keiichi net radio and wants to know what it says since she is from Shanghai. Thanks!

Alternatively, you could post the lyrics in Japanese, so that we actually have half a chance at knowing what's being said. Alternatively, you could just dismiss Orange Range as a bunch of thieving musicians with little or no originality. Any of the above would work. Preferrably not option 2.

Shanghai Honey*:
Isn't this weather great? There isn't one cloud
The deep red sun, I want to know you
Later I'll have my chance, I want to hold you today
A passionate decision on the beach
Just like the fighting spirits of the Koushien finals
But my batting average is 9 rin, Jon is sorry
Surely I'll succeed in telling you my story
Are my days of doing nothing by myself over tonight?
On the beach I socially dance, with a Shanghai honey
Having been staring at her, I can't contain myself around this goddess
Having an asian randezvous with a Shanghai honey
My motives and morals are restless
I don't know you very well, but my heart's really pounding
Yo a clever conversation, make fun of her
A talk tickling her with maternal instinct
That's my ideal figure
But my ideals are my ideals, and it seems that this will again end in "you seem nice"
No way, tonight for sure I'm going to get it
I've dropped my restraint, and now it's a duel!
Now is the season, the springtime of our lives
"Let's do it!!", I'm full of fighting spirit
On the beach I socially dance, with a Shanghai honey
Having been staring at her, I can't contain myself around this goddess
Having an asian randezvous with a Shanghai honey
My motives and morals are restless
Is this true love? Yeah right
Yeah, that's impossible.
But yes, I don't
Know you that well, but my heart's really pounding
On the beach I socially dance, with a Shanghai honey
Having been staring at her, I can't contain myself around this goddess
Having an asian randezvous with a Shanghai honey
My motives and morals are restless
I'm not sure if this is true love
Yes, it is
But yes, I don't
Know you that well, but my heart's really pounding

Edit- Even Japanese people have a hard time understanding Orange Range as they are from Okinawa and use a lot of that dialect and probably have accents. They performed at a branch of the university I teach at in Tokyo recently and I was asking some people (Japanese 19-23 yr. olds) what they thought and the majority said they liked em but had no idea what they said.
Thanks a lot everyone for the help. :-P
Sbabbari: Yeah, my professor was just talking about Okinawa today. She said she went there 20 years ago, and was like "oh no, now you know I'm more than 20!!", but yeah, then she said that she could talk with people in standard japanese, but when like...two natives would talk to each other, she'd be like "...what?".

The lyrics has nothing to do with Shanghai. It's a song about field trips, well, Shugaku-ryoko to be precise. It's like a senior field trip type of things at junior high and high schools. They were just talking about it at Music Station the other week. Don't ask why it has Shanghai in its title if it has nothing to do with it, it just doesn't. But considering these are Japanese people who made the song, it's somewhat understandable that they'd do something random like this.

Which reminds me. Does anyone have any j-pop recommendations that are actually any good? My friend keeps thrusting earphones into my ears and subjecting me to, I have to be honest, music that makes me weep with pain. If I can find a common ground with something we both like, I can save our friendship ;)

A bit old, but Sakurazaka by Fukuyama Masaharu is pretty damn good. Actually it seems like any song with "sakura" in it is good.

Thanks for the help on this. Whenever my wife hears the word Shanghai her ears always perk up and she gets really interested in what is going on. She's pretty proud to be from there.
You have no idea how mad she was when I told her what the phrase "I've been shanghaied" meant. :worried:

For Jpopy-esque stuff,
Utada Hikaru's newish single (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8619856744187378688&q=utada) is decent
The brilliant green's stuff (http://www.youtube.com/w/angel-song-%7Eivu-no-kane%7E?v=XeuAzXhZQMg&search=angel%20song) is pretty good
Tommy's stuff is... well it's (http://www.youtube.com/w/Tommy-February6---Lonely-in-Gorgeous-%5BLIVE%5D?v=3alXrUbhfTk&search=February6)the way it is on purpose, I hope
*shrug* A good majority of it will melt your brain (http://www.youtube.com/w/Ai-no-imi-wo-oshiete?v=M6TT2cqnujo&search=double%20u) and choke you with syrupy lyrics, but there is some good stuff out there.

Well, what kinds of music do you like? (And what kinds have you already tried as far as J-Pop goes that you know you don't like?) I can probably come up with a decent chunk of material once I know those two things...only because I don't want to go suggest things that'll only end up being *worse* for you. :dj:
