View Full Version : Favorite Quote? (For t-shirts...)
Azrael

I'm in the process of, hopefully, finally, making some t-shirts. Find the thread about it HERE. (http://www.outpostnine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2812) One of the designs that came up was something simple...a base design with nothing overly outrageous. So I came up with this...
http://outpostnine.com/Az/simple_front.jpg
And this would be the back...
http://www.outpostnine.com/Az/simple_back.jpg
However, using the Shakespeare quote would be wasteful. It was brought to my attention that one of my quotes should be used...I've narrowed it down to three possibilities. So I would like you all to vote on which quote you would most like to see used on this shirt. Your contenders are...
#1. Try to imagine a country where the perceptions of you are created by your movies, music, and MTV. And when you stop crying and shaking at the sheer horror of that thought, I'll be here waiting.
--From "My Kids Are Perverted"
#2. I'm already going to hell, but I'd like to at least keep the handbasket.
--From "Show Me The Honey!"
#3. I make it a priority everyday to share my deepest and innermost thoughts with a couple thousand strangers on The Internets. ...Who doesn't?
--From "More Mailbox Goodness"
Remember that these are going on t-shirts, so pick the ONE that, if this were on a shirt, you may actually wear in public.

#2! I'd SO go for a t-shirt with that on it.

Hands Down: #3
You should also do another one with the same front and "www.outpostnine.com" on the back ... imho. Or add the url (in small letters) to the first one.

I love #3, like #2.
But for #3... is "most innermost" intentional?
The base design looks too bland. Though I think you are trying to do this by yourself, asking someone to design a logo for outpost nine may actually help. How you would pay for their services would be negotiable, but I'm pretty sure there'd be at least more than one person willing to do it. Frankly, if I had to pay more than ten bucks for a T-shirt, I would expect something more attention-grabbing.
Oh, and number two is the best one in my opinion.

Number 1, I like.

I like the design. I actually prefer simple T-shirt designs over really complicated ones, for the most part.
But I have to admit, I can't bring myself to vote for any of the three quotes. There are so many better ones on this site! The second one is really good, but I probably wouldn't actually wear it.

I agree, what you want on a shirt is something attention-grabbing and to the point, and quotes 1 and 3 are really funny, but too long for a T-shirt. I, like MNJetter, probably wouldn't wear 2. Are the other ideas (Kancho Revolution, I Do You School Bus) still on?

You have really picked three that are fairly evenly liked. the 1st and last are good if you have the background info of your editorials but the second is humourous on its own.
Goodluck with the shirt!
Lisa M
02-02-2006, 06:37 AM
I think the third is funny if you know what the internet is.
Jeff. Mate. Short, to the point. Not big and complex so the wearer has to stop for five minutes so the reader can finish reading the shirt.
MNJetter
02-02-2006, 06:41 AM
lol, so if I find the third less than humorous, that means I am unaware of the fact that I'm posting to an internet forum?:P
....by "less than humorous," I mean not so much that the quote offended me, which obviously it didn't. More of an "I looked at it, but it did nothing for me" type.
The design doesn't have to be complicated- hell, it could be just "Outpost Nine" in some catchy font off from Photoshop or Illustrator, albeit in the same color, with Outpost Nine spelled out in katakana in smaller letters to accompany it. Do the font in darker colors like black or navy, and have the T-shirt color stand out in contrast, like blue, red, something. Same goes for the quote. Hell, I could come up with a design I have in mind, but this is entirely up to Azrael.
BTW, if you ever checked out threadless.com, they have people coming up with designs, then the designs are up for votes, and only the most popular ones make the cut. Some of that strategy could be applied here.
Though, my suggestions aside, I think Outpost Nine t-shirts may bring in some money from some hardcore fans. Me? If I'm gonna spend my bucks on a t-shirt, it better be good looking and stand out.

I don't much care for any of those quotes. I've read things in the editorials that have made me laugh till my eyes watered. Those three quotes aren't the ones.
But, out of those three, I'd have to go with #3. Adding the url would also be good. The quote along with the url might get people to check out the site.
Shirts + advertising = win win situation

Keep in mind that Option #1 is a lot less relevant to your non-American readers.
I'm sure we all have lots of things to be ashamed of, but fortunately MTV isn't one of them...

Re: Quotes...
Remember that this is the BASE shirt. For those who don't want to get too radical. So I tried to pick stuff that wasn't too far out there or potentially offensive. This is the list I originally came up with...
Try to imagine a country where the perceptions of you are created by your movies, music, and MTV. And when you stop crying and shaking at the sheer horror of that thought, I'll be here waiting.
#1, My Kids are Perverted
If she'd whipped out a gun or a a samurai sword or even a small woodland animal I could have dealt with that, but "Spread your legs!" left me completely incapacitated.
#4, Japanese Kids Say the Darndest Things
She's a nice girl, but apparently gravity has already kicked her ass.
#5, Rice Suave Meets Velma
Oh no! It ripped.
#15, The Octopus
And the geography is still forever changed.
#15, The Octopus
Personally, I'd think something like "Hey, would you mind turning your stereo down?" would be slightly less embarrassing than "Hey, you're pretty well endowed, huh?" but I guess this is one of those cultural differences I have yet to understand.
#17, Oxymorons
I'd much rather watch evolution - literally stare at a monkey and wait for it to start becoming human than watch Japanese TV. I can promise you, the monkey would be 100x more entertaining. Even if it were dead.
#17, Oxymorons
Note to self - next year, institute the "English Mallet of Justice". Anytime you ask a question and get "Goodbye!" or "No!" or "Go to hell!" as a response, whip out the Mallet and dispense swift, extremely prejudiced Justice.
#31, Requiem For a Legacy Part II
But In Japan the PTA is like some Italian mob-owned, GOD-like Organization. ...The PTA. Don't mess with us, or we'll ruin your bake sale. ...Suckas.
#38, It Has Begun
Congratulations, you broke the internet. Good job
#53, Black Man Lies
If I ever become King of some country, I hope to find subjects loyal enough to take a dirty sock to the chest for me.
#63, Showtime
I'm already going to hell, but I'd like to at least keep the handbasket.
#67, Show Me The Honey!
Come to work. Everyday. The kids will suffer, we will suffer, we will all suffer together splendidly. If you are not suffering, you are not Japanese.
#69, Summertime
I must be honest. I like big butts. My other kinsmen are unable to contradict that when a striking young lady with a diminuitive waistline and a bulbous posterior enters, you become vigorous.
#82, More Mailbox Goodness
I make it a priority everyday to share my deepest and innermost thoughts with a couple thousand strangers on The Internets. ...Who doesn't?
#82, More Mailbox Goodness
The guy gets to do a sports commercial for HIS OWN COUNTRY, and he best he can do is assist his big magnificently black teammate. This is why I sort of think that, at heart, John Stockton is secretly Japanese.
#83, Just Another Monday
I posted it in the other thread, but I think people kinda stopped reading it. Anyway, those three seemed to be the most universally agreed upon.
As far as hard-hitting goes, surely, the "I can't imagine - you're a 12 year old Japanese boy being forcibly restrained by a large black man who is bound and determined to penetrate your ass" or "I'll kancho you so hard, General Tojo will feel it 60 years ago, and call his planes back before they get to Pearl Harbor" stuff is better...but how many people would actually wear that on a t-shirt? That can come later, but for now, this is just the BASIC shirt.
Other shirts...
So far, I have the Kancho Revolution...
http://www.outpostnine.com/Az/krev_red.jpg
Also, "I do you schoolbus" (no picture)
And for the ladies, "BREASTS!" (no picture)
I've also come up with a logo in the past few hours to put on all shirts, or possibly make into a shirt of it's own. This is just something I threw together within an hour, so it's just a prototype.
http://www.outpostnine.com/Az/op9logo.jpg
That's a kickarse logo, mate.
----------------------
I remain of the opinion that "Spread Your Legs!" would make the best T-shirt design ever.
It's blatantly suggestive and it's an inside joke, for those of us that know where it came from. it's win-win.

Number 2 easily because wearing it to school on a casual gear day would just rock.

Awesome logo. Definatly put it somewhere on all of the shirts. Maybe on the sleeve by the shoulder or something.
As for which quote to use. All 3 are good. I like the handbasket one but on the other hand 1 and 3 invite people to visit outpostnine.com. While it wasn't one of the ones I "nominated" in the other thread I think I will vote for number 3 hear simply because it really feels like the right one. Honestly I really don't know why I didn't mention that one before because it is really good.
Much like the logo and #3 for the base shirt.
Azrael
02-02-2006, 03:42 PM
I'm starting to think that I can use the logo as the base shirt. Then if the quote shirt isn't going to be the base, then we could possibly get away with something more risque.
So then, what quote is most deserving of a t-shirt?
I would go with two because it's shorter. For a punchy, attention grabbing shirt, short is better.

I really like #2. It just speaks to a wide audience. Because after all, who wouldn't want to keep the handbasket? Its one I would certainly wear.
I picked three because it seemed most appropriate to a web log and would give a hint at what Outpost Nine is. You want people to know what it is you're advertising. It also is a funny commentary on the whole blogging thing.

I chose #2 simply because it's concise and funny in and of itself.

I pick #2 because it's funny and short. You def. want your msg to be short on t-shirts so that people would be able to read it without staring for several minutes.

If she'd whipped out a gun or a a samurai sword or even a small woodland animal I could have dealt with that, but "Spread your legs!" left me completely incapacitated.

I don't really get the quote about going through hell and the hand basket. Is that a reference to something, or did Az just make-up something completely random?

I'd buy the Kancho Revolution one, but I don't think the quotes are that good =\
The handbasket is the best though.... but they're all kinda meh....
This one ftw:
I must be honest. I like big butts. My other kinsmen are unable to contradict that when a striking young lady with a diminuitive waistline and a bulbous posterior enters, you become vigorous.
3 Questions:
When will they be avaliable?
Will you have XXL?
How much will it cost?
Okay, I made some revisions to the logo proposed by Az:
http://www.maj.com/gallery/blackandblue/internetcrap/op9logo.jpg
the base logo, without the circle around the logo, changed the color of '9' into red, and moved the text a bit closer to the logo.
http://www.maj.com/gallery/blackandblue/internetcrap/krev_red.jpg
This is a revision of the Kancho revolution logo, changed the font of 'kancho revolution'to the one proposed by kifo from the T-shirts? thread, and tweaked the placement of the texts and the hand a bit.
Lastly, this is a base logo design proposed by me, and could serve as an alternate logo:

Ouu I really like those designs, NERD. A little too red, though. As for the quote... I personally like #3, but I definitely think a shorter quote should be used.

Red White and Black are great colour schemes, NERD.
If you used the Japanese text written in white, it'd be much more eye-pleasing.
The color could be changed, of course- just felt that red made an immediate impact, as opposed to other colors.

Yeah, it's an old saying "We are all going to hell in a handbasket." So Az feels that he may well end up in Hell, but gosh darn its a nice handbasket and he'd like to keep it!

Out of the longer list, I like the one about the dirty sock best.

Personally, I liked the first one. It's a great read. However... for a t-shirt, it's also of an ungodly length. So I've opted for quote number two, instead. Who *isn't* going to Hell? We can all relate, I'm sure.

Az, you could always use some help...
Kancho Revolution and the Breasts! ones are the better ones up there. However, I still believe the OP9 base logo could use some revision. I do you schoolbus' design is quite underwhelming, in my opinion.
But, I'll wait and see how much money you can make off of these shirts. Lofty endeavor, indeed.
