So, I just got home from a lovely week in Los Angeles. I am a very white girl, but I thought it would be a good idea to go to the beach with my cousin yesterday. So we went to Malibu. And laid out. For the entire day. This was, obviously, a poor decision on my part. It hurts just walking because my entire backside is so red. I also caught a virus from my 2-year-old nephew, and am coughing and sneezing and my throad hurts like whoa. But other than all that, I had a great time visiting my sister in LA!
Anyone know any ways to make sunburn not hurt like freakishly bad? Sitting here hurts! I can't put jeans on cuz it feels very un-good. And I've aloe-ed myself, and it doesn't really seem to help. Please help.

Pure aloe is the best way to go. Grease yourself up in it, then sit in front of a fan or something... the only thing to do after that is wait for your skin to repair itself.
I did the same thing in LA a while back. My mom is *extremely* dark, and I made the stupid mistake of borrowing her "sunblock" without checking the SPF. I sat out in the sun for about 5 hours, got back to the house and noticed I was orange. Not red, but orange. I looked at the bottle... SPF 3. WTF?!? WHO THE HELL USES SPF 3?!
I got so badly burnt that when the skin started peeling, it was all crunchy :( Now I've got a few sunspots on my shoulders...
If you get any stains/marks like me, you should go to the dermatologist and get it checked out right away.

I have a question. Do black people even get sunburns? No racism or whatever intended. It's just that I never heard of a black guy getting a sunburn before. I realise this question may be extremely odd. Don't blame me, I'm from Europe.

Pictures? :)
Find an after-sun gel with aloe vera in it. I use something by Banana Boat that is green. It is practically glowing green. The bottle is plastic; clear & colorless. The cap is yellow. Apply liberally and often.
EDIT: Found it:

I'm allergic to most sun block.
And most of the time I'm too lazy to go out and find the special kind that I'm not allergic too.
So I know exactly how you feel right now elliejay...because I went to mexico for a week with out any sun block at all...:D

I don't think so. I am between light and dark and have never had one. I can tan slightly though.

Hahaha, that sucks you got a sunburn, just like don't do too much, it'll hurt like alot, but if you make it hurt alot, and you get used to it, than it won't hurt that much. One time my friend got a sunburn that was like 2nd degree, and he couldn't move at all, he had to sit in a chair for like 3 days.

Well I ate a couple of tylenol, that seems to help some. I'm sitting on my floor right now, which still doesn't feel too pleasant. I think I'm just gonna be sore for a while. The aloe feels good for like, three and a half seconds, but then it's all back to normal.
And I'm the smart one that gets burned at least once a year. . .I'm sooo gonna end up with skin cancer when I'm like 21. Not lookin forward to that one.

Try a cool (not too cold) shower, treat it like any other burn. For burns you usually try to draw the heat out to help it heal. If nothing else, cool water should feel soothing.

Oh man! Sorry to hear that Elliejay! I hate sunburns! I'm not sure if this is good or not, but my family (who are full of nurses and firefighters) use to always put Bactine or something like it on burns. It actually helped and I think it had anitbiotic stuff in it, which can help keep the burn from getting infected. Other than that, everyone else has already mentioned what usually helps the most! :)

Owch, sorry to hear about your discomfort. Once when i was like 5 I went to Florida with my family. We were getting ready to got to the beach and we were with my cousins so there were a lot of people. The adults were helping the kids get their sunblock on but I avioded them (I HATED sunblock). They thought another adult had helped me get the sunscreen on and we left for the beach.
I thought I was so clever but I got sunburned so bad that I had to go to the hospital. Well it was more of a clinic but it wasnt good. It must have been painful but I don't really remember. I never really get burned anymore (I still hate sunblock though) I just know when to go it the shade.

Sorry about the sunburn. It gets pretty bad down here with the hole in the ozone layer, sometimes it can take 10 minutes to turn bright pink. I'm freckled all to heck. I even have them on the bottom of my feet.
One thing that sometimes feels great is covering yourself in meths or any other chemical with endothermic properties. Well..... no, not meths. It'll burn like hell. But if it's seriously bad then at least it won't get infected.
If you can, get an actual aloe vera plant. They look pretty, and are really useful if you get it fresh.
And frozen yoghurt. Get lots.

Well my dad just runs a bath and puts like soothing stuff in it and lays in it for ages, he sometimes falls asleep.
other then that i would say just keep the Aloe up and stay still. Also dont pick at the skin when its peeling.
Sunburn SUCKS. I fucking hate it. Luckily I haven't burned in a really long time, even though I'm out in the sun a fair bit.

I think rarely would be close. Not exactly sure but based off my personal experience I have never been sunburned before. I've been out in the sun all day and didn't feel a thing before.

The worst I ever got sunburned was when I was in Australia and went out snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. After snorkeling for a while, I lay down on the top deck of the boat and fell asleep. I woke up an hour or so later and was extra crispy. That was not fun for a couple of days.

Welcome to Australia, buddy. :D
My worst ever sunburn was when I went for HOURS without a shirt in the middle of summer. My back was literally one big blister, and it was agony for a week.
That taught ME, I tell you what.

I had a great time in Australia when I was there. One thing that compunded it was that we went to Brisbane the next day and the temperature was a bit cooler than up in Cairns. I was better before we left Brisbane, though. I really liked Cairns, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne. Sydney was okay, but not as nice as the rest. I plan to go back to Australia next year and visit the Western part, including Perth. I also plan to hit Tasmania and New Zealand as part of the trip, but I'll see how it goes.

We want pictures! Oh, and supposedly plain yogurt works, also vinegar too. I've tried the vinegar one, smells but works well.

I saw this topic and knew someone was going to ask this question. But like others have half-guessed or assumed blacks don't sunburn. Our black skin is a genetic adaptation to deal with being in the sun for long period without getting burned. There are some cases where lighter skinned blacks get sunburned but rarely and that's usually due to a heavily mixture of another race. But in most cases, black usually just turn darker when in the sun. No pain really.

I'm sorry, but I feel no sympathy for you. You're just stupid if you think you can go out into the sun all day without getting burned. Even with sunscreen. (& if your naturally dark-skinned, its still not smart). You might as well tell your body to make the skin cancer & get if over with.
By the way, look for Vitamin E lotion (In your local pharmacy), thats supposedly the best method for sunburn.
I know what you are going through. I used to be very white, not at Jay's level but still pretty badly. An example of how white I was would be the fact that everytime I went to the doctor for something simple(even filling out forums or the like), they would ask me if I was sick, because I was white, and would take a blood test.
I used to put on spf 45 or something around that, and no matter what I would still get burned. This was bad, because I would go canoeing alot, as well as to the beach. Now in either of those two instances I would be under the sun for a little bit(canoeing was basically all day).
This summer I have not went to the beach once, and thankfully have not been burned.
I have on the other hand been running under the sun alot. This has actually helped me tan myself up a tiny bit, so you could try that.

I can't resist im sorry Jay........ :) :D :p , but it looks like you have never seen the sun from your photo.
Ahhhhh that feels much better.
They say the best way to get over sickness is to give it to somebody else. Also a great way to make yourself feel better is to put someone else down.

Another ignorant question here but....why do people peel when they get sunburned. There was this one guy at JROTC summer camp last year and his face was peeling and it did not look right at all.
I believe its the dead skin. I am not sure tho because it being summer, I have forgotten practically everything I have ever learned.
