View Full Version : What Do You Stand For?
Idlethought

Like what concept do you hold close to your heart? What do you stand for? I ask this cause I was thinking about myself and I realized that I don't stand for anything really, so I was just wondering what other people deem as important to them.
And no need for the "If you stand for nothing you'll fall for anything" quote danke.
I stand for stretches when my legs get sore.

Seriously Jay lol
Haha!
Okay, seriously? I stand for respect (especially to womenfolk; guys disrepecting the chicks don't sit with me); I stand for fair play; I stand for the right to voice an opinion, no matter what it is; and I stand for the right to a fair go without being judged.

I stand for equality. I believe people of all races, backgrounds, genders, ideas and ideologies should be equally respected and accepted amongst each other and treated the exact same way.
In an ideal world, there will be no grants for students because they're asian. There will be no war on muslim terrorism, and there will be no struggles for peace between Israel and Palestina. Simply because these things would be moot points.
But we can only dream. It seems too many people are fine with putting certain groups on a pedestal, or lowering the status of other groups.
individual rights, as long as they do not directly harm anyone.
in an ideal world, nothing is taboo as long as it really is none of your business.
(i'm sure there's a better way to phrase that.. but to hell with it for now, it's late and i just wanted to make my stand clear.)

I'm taking the piss, mate. ;) Saying 'how so' denotes not understanding, denotes lack of intelligence, to put it VERY generally.

Interesting question.
Jay was the first person to answer. At first he saw humor and answered in kind. Then, he hit the nail on the head. He came up with the answer that covers most everything, a single word, respect.
If everyone had respect for each other there would be equality, peace, courage and truth. With respect, there would be fair play where people didn’t need to put others down to elevate themselves.
Then, Loc introduced hopes and dreams. Again, I agree. They make life interesting and worth living.
I could think long and hard and still not come up with better answers than Jay and Loc. So, I’ll simply say, me too.
Can I add to the single-word answers? Selflessness.

I stand for breasts. How else would babies survive? All of us wouldn't be here today without breasts. We would have starved or force fed some nasty supplement. Yick, titty milk is so much better than that stuff.

I Stand for it being wrong to physically abuse women
I'm with you there, I have very deep visceral actions to women being abused.
If you're looking for more general responses, then mutual respect and freedom of choice (within moral limits).

I would stand for honesty, but that would be a lie.
I would stand for love, but I hate the evils of the world.
I would stand for integrity, but I am weak-minded.
I would stand for optimism, but there are times when even I can't see the bright side.
So, I stand for the two things that I truly believe can apply to nearly anybody, in nearly any situation.
If you fail at something, it's never too late to pick yourself up and try again.
You can only do what you are capable of doing. But that doesn't mean that if you try hard, you won't improve. Until you try your very best, you don't know what you can accomplish.
This is the philosiphy I hold dearest, and I try to impart it to the kids I teach, even if just a little bit.

I stand for anything "good". To agree with Jay and Praetorian, things like respect for people and equality for all people. In my personal life, I try to stand for being anything but mediocre;that applies to whatever I'm into at the moment.

Hmmm... I haven't really thought much about this kind of thing before. But it is a very good question. I definately believe in respect for others, in that I agree with both Jay and Ruiadhri. But I also stand for and believe in freedom of information. I believe that censoring what people can know and learn is wrong and shouldn't be. How can we learn from past mistakes, failures and successes if we don't know about them?

I stand for personal freedom, and the respect for the freedoms of others. My freedom ends where yours begins, and vice versa. I stand for the ideal that no human is more important than any other, better than any other, and the thought that having something means having it to give away.
I believe in the most perplexing thing of all: free will. No man, woman or God is to blame for your trials or troubles. Every choice you have made in your life has brought you to the point of your sorrows... and the same goes for every human around you.
Granted, I'm a realist, so I know that "equal" usually means "equally damned," but still... *shrugs*

I don't really stand for anything really, however I do have a pethate when people just sit around the house and not make any effort to get educated/get a job/look for etc, worse still when they respond with "What's the point?"

I stood for individuality and creativity. I believe that every person has something only they can do, or do it their special way. Like my music I've written (can't play anymore, unfortunately) or the pictures I take. I think, people pursuing their dreams might succeed and will not become happy, but also enrich society and make others happy. Think of your favorite song that's always cheered you up when you were down, and you know what I mean.
However, I'm taking a break from that, because I want to make money. My goal is to earn enough money so that I can stop working and fully concentrate on what I really want to do. Maybe that's stupid and wrong.
When I was young, I thought the only way to make my dreams come true was to completely concentrate on them and forgetting everything else (practised about 10-12 hours a day for a long time), but I didn't have the courage (read: financial security) to keep at it. So I had to find another way to make things work out. Now, it's money first, then the dreams. That doesn't make me a happy person, but I can't see another solution right now.
One day, I'll...

I still stand for individuality and creativity and pursuing one's dreams. So despite getting straight As through high school (except in Chinese) and SAT scores good enough to go anywhere but the ivy league universities I decided to pursue a music performance degree (violin). And since I really can't get enough of music I'm taking electives in piano, composition, conducting and theory. Will I end up with a job? Maybe, maybe not. But even if I'm living in a box :box: if I have my Brahms I'll be happy. :D
Yes I'm an idealist. Sue me.

I stand for myself.
I stand for those who won't stand for themselves.
I stand for love, no matter what race, sex, or religion you are.
I stand for hope, because there is a reason why it was left in Pandora's Box
I stand for happiness, because the few moments of it are worth lifetimes of sadness.
I stand for memories, because they are what guide us through it all.
I stand for education, because all deserve it.
I stand for freedom, because without we are truly nothing.
I stand for courage, because sometimes it is all we have.
I stand for truth, because in a world of lies it may be all we need.
I stand for justice, because no one is above the law, not even the law itself.
I stand.
And sometimes, that's enough.
Damn straight. <double thumbs up>
