Well, I decided, what the hell and made an art topic. Post up your art here. People who were there on the old board might recognize most of these.
Here's some of my stuff (just posting a portion for right now):
1. http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/2262/jakiisketchnew7vt.th.png (http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jakiisketchnew7vt.png)
This is a drawing I made after I got Jak II for my PS2 (Got it Christmas). I got bored and decided to draw something with Jak and his transformation. One half- we see the new Jak holding his morph-gun and on the other half- Dark Jak forming some dark energy in his hand.
2. http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/4735/cgproject1conceptsketch0xh.th.jpg (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cgproject1conceptsketch0xh.jpg)
Concept sketch of me as a cyborg. Did this for my Graphic Design class. Not much to it. You've got the wires and crazy looking camera-lens for an eye. You know.
3. http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/1788/tmntraphsplinters8eq.th.png (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tmntraphsplinters8eq.png)
Last piece for now. TMNT drawing. We've got Raph in the front and Master Splinter in the back. This didn't really go anywhere...
Feel free to put up your own art. Some constructive criticism would be nice too.

poems count as art?
Don’t Cry
If I catch it, she will love me
The luscious leaf taunted in the air
Off the cliff it swam, so high
Blue sky.
Blue sky.
Clinging to the leaf, the wind’s talons
Now I jump into oblivion
I began to perceive the vitality of the earth
The earth began to dance,
Like the pounding of a heart
The woods and everything in it sang
I caught the leaf and rejoiced!
As if I had captured the blue sky
Deeply
Deeply
Breathed the air, flavor and fragrance
Not in streets nor in rooms existed such air
It was more like eating than breathing
Then came the matron of the night
With her glowing face
With her glittering manteau
Sitting on her fluffy furs, weeping for me
Now I understand it all
The earth, the forest, the sky
The music.
The music.
Even the nightingale wept for me too
To sing my fool-hearted requiem
I won my highschool poetry contest with it :P, matron of the night and that whole stanza is about the moon, suppose to represent pathetic fallacy with the change from day to night.

Painted this a few years ago when I was learning to paint w/ Photoshop. It's from scratch, and I didn't use any of the original photo, but I did have the photo as the top layer to check my proportions. Never painted while the photo was visible, though.
A little later I decided to see how I could paint w/out using a guide so much. Did this one in Photoshop but w/ the source image in Windows picture/fax viewer... If anyone cares:

I dunno. I work too slow. And I just push pixels around 'till my carpal tunnel kicks in.
I'd like to try real paint someday just for the heck of it, but I don't know if I could get by w/out layers and control + Z.

Ah, you found the problem. I lack the motivation/ambition. That's why I'm mediocre in most things... 2d art, 3d art, guitar, Japanese... I guess you could call me a renaissance man... Though that's really just a euphemism for mediocrity.

Those are great drawings. And I like your design work... Did you place all that text using Photoshop? That had to get complicated. lol
And right now I'm doing freelance webdesign and hopefully soon 3d modeling/animation. That's about the best (and only) way I have right now of making money from my 'talent.' But thanks for the kind words, both of you. I appreciate it.

I draw marginally passable anime-style art to sell at conventions. I just moved from coloring everything in colored pencil to coloring everything digitally... though I don't know if I've taken a step back or a step forward. Bleh.

help?
First, upload the image to an image host like Imageshack or Photobucket. Next, copy the image tag code they give you into your post and it will post. Or, just link a URL to the image you uploaded. I hope that helps.
Henjin, that paint job looks pretty good. I'd like to try my hand at that, but I don't have a graphics tablet (assuming that's what you used). I like Akitaka's drawings and Photoshop stuff too.
Oh and Mr. Babalo, I guess writings (like songs and poems) could be considered art in their own sense. Go ahead and post 'em if you have them.
Anyway, since this topic seems to be growing, I'll just post a couple more:
1. http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9672/detectiveconceptdrawing16rc.th.png (http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=detectiveconceptdrawing16rc.png)
Ah, one of my favorite drawings. It was late one night (about 1:30AM). I was watching Sanford & Son (and after that, Three's Company) when I decided to start drawing. For an hour and a half, I just worked at this sketch. I liked the result.
2.http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/9564/catsketch14rc.th.png (http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=catsketch14rc.png)
This is a sketch of my sister's cat, who likes to help herself to my bed... Well, she was just sitting there, so I decided to do a quick sketch of the body (because cat's don't like to sit still). Then I just drew the rest of her afterwards. For the most part, she was just looking at me, so I got a good look at her face. I then just drew the ret of my room around her. She's at the foot of my bed, and behind her is my guitar (which I quit), my Dreamcast, TV, and other things.
3.http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8692/catsketch22wq.th.png (http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=catsketch22wq.png)
Cat again. She went down to my floor and I sketched her in a few different ways. Thought these turned out alright.

Can I ask how much you've sold? I never knew there was a market for that kind of stuff.

@Zaysho: I used a USB optical mouse. The trick is to paint the basic shapes w/ a semi transparent paintbrush. Then you do the details w/ the smudge tool.

....no tablet huh. That's hot stuff. As for my design stuff, I used photoshop, because it's the only program I really learned to use :\ to tell you the truth, I think Illustrator or Fireworks MX would provide for cleaner lines. All I can say is, many, many, many layers, organized in folders.
As for drawing...ahh I need to draw more; my drawing speed is horribly crap. I just don't feel motivated, though. Ah well.

Yeah, I only use Photoshop too. I don't really like vector graphics.
And in all mu work, I'm super slow, so don't sweat it.
@Zaysho: The last two pics you posted weren't loading for me earlier, so I couldn't see them, but now I have. I like the cat sketches. It's a great talent to be able to sketch something accurately and quickly. Esp. w/ the correct proportions.
Here's a sketch I did. Took forever and it's not very good. Note the many eraser marks. Heh.

I made a little over $300 at my first con, and it was a small, 700 person ordeal. I'm hoping to make at least at much at AWA come september... but we'll see. If I can make that much, then someone who's actually talented could make a killing ;P
Beef Jerky Girl is XP-tan... or a personification of windows XP. Thus, she's having a snack of RAM ;P

Oh, that's RAM. lol
$300 for pencil drawings of anime characters? How many did you sell? I always wanted to go to an anime convention to mock people, but if I could make money off them too... :D
@Zaysho: I've always liked a realistic style and kept that as a goal. But it would be cool to be able to sketch out comics or caricatures.

@Zaysho: I've always liked a realistic style and kept that as a goal. But it would be cool to be able to sketch out comics or caricatures.
I would personally like to draw realistically, but whenever I try to draw like that, it turns out cartoonish/comic style anyway. Then again, I guess I should be happy with what I can do at the moment.
While I'm here, one new drawing from me:
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8923/monkeykingconcept6te.th.png (http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=monkeykingconcept6te.png)
I got bored and decided to do some research on that old Chinese legend "Journey to the West". I decided to make my own version of the Monkey King. He looks more evil here. I don't know why I drew the Dragon Balls behind him, guess I just thought they'd look good. And, I guess I was thinking about how DB is based off of it pretty loosely anyway, so I guess tieing them in would be good.

Mmmm... Matsu Takako...
I like you better every day, henjin :) You have good taste, my friend!
(On a side note, not to hijack the thread or anything, I was supposed to meet her at a party years ago in Japan. It was New Years and I discovered a friend of mine was a childhood friend of Takako's. We were having a party at my friend's house and she suggested inviting Takako, to which I replied, "Oh HELLS yes." Unfortunately, my friend's mom came down with the flu the day of the party, it got cancelled, and by the time we found a new location for the party, Takako had made plans to go to Kouhaku :( Thus, ended my chances of meeting her, as my friend moved to Australia...)

As do you! Man, I would LOVE to meet her. As sad as it is, she's pretty much the reason I started learning Japanese 2yrs ago. I was bored one night when I found いつも二人で on the International Channel. I watched it for 3 nights straight just because of her. I mean I had no knowledge of Japanese at all, and there weren't even subtitles. lol (I was ticked when I learned that Japanese dramas only go for 10eps or so)
I've gotten so much out of my study, and met a lot of cool people because of it... and it's all because she was so beautiful in that drama. Hah.
I actually downloaded the entire いつも二人で series a while back. I'm saving it to watch it when I'm good enough to understand it w/out subs. lol
EDIT: That picture of her is actually the first one I ever painted on my PC.

Her real name is actually Fujima Takako (shhhh... oh wait, it's on the intarwebs... nm then). She comes from a famous family of kabuki actors (her older brother and father). In fact, her brother is Ichikawa Somegoro, and is one of the main characters in the drama "Pride" (which is cheesy as hell, even for me).
If you're a Matsu Takako fan, I suggest you check out "4gatsu Monogatari." It's a movie, really slow paced, but it's 2 hours of her :)
Oh, and if that's your taste, I suggest you also check out Takeuchi Yuuko, Kuroki Hitomi, Kimura Yoshino, and Fukatsu Eri.

The following post will be primarily addressed to 'henjin'.
A few pages back on this thread you mentioned being good at most things but that it's really just an excuse for mediocrity. I feel the exact same way about myself, and I've never heard anyone else say so, or those who did have not had any real talent to back them up.
In February 2002 I started drawing. Things started out by sucking real bad but I felt like I was making quick progress. As a result I kept on and I forced everyone to look at and comment on my crap, to my major embarrassment today.
I finally stopped in February 2004. It took me two years to learn that drawings (http://ephemereal.com/stuff/yukishiro-line.png) do NOT (http://ephemereal.com/stuff/saekolily.jpg) equate to art. Those two links are to images I created which represent perhaps the very humble pinnacle of my technical skill. Even so, they're next to worthless because they are uninspired and dull, like everything else I tried to create during that period. They don't have anything to say because I don't have anything to say.
Since then I've moved on with stuff with which I can actually express myself, like photography and music. But when I see visual artists with real talent and imagination (http://manga.clone-army.org/kanamitop.jpg) it burns because I know I never had that imagination myself. I can never create art, despite how badly I want to.
When I look at a blank canvas, all I see is a blank canvas.
Henjin
08-13-2005, 11:17 PM
I'm sorry if I don't really understand what you're getting at. And to clarify, I only consider myself to be a step above mediocre. I've often called myself a glorified Xerox machine. I wish I had the talent to come up w/ a beautiful painting completely out of nowhere, but like you (if I understood you correctly), I don't. What I have is a technical skill, not necessarily a 'gift' or 'talent.' That said, I don't really consider that as useless. It just means that for me, I'm better suited for example, to using my 3d skills to make architectural renderings than to creating an original 3d animation to sell to a studio... Know what I mean? (I have created 3d animations w/ unique story lines, but all the objects where based on reality. Which, w/ my goal of photorealistic 3d renderings, isn't all that odd.)
At the end of the day, it's just a hobby and a temporary escape for me. Some people build model planes or tend a garden, I paint occasionally.

I know this wasn't directed at me but, if you practiced and kept at it, you'd get better at art in general. I mean, I've had your kind of outlook before, and it just does not help. Being negative isn't exactly going to get you to be better. I personally don't consider what I do to be a talent (like Henjin). I had to work to achieve my current level despite the put downs and everything. Really, you get out what you put in. Minimal effort equals next to nothing, good amount of effort equals good results.

There are quite a few people who are good with doing artistic work. Henjin your work with photoshop is good, I saw that shot in the first section, it is impressive. My sister should probrably post some too, or I will ask her which one she did. She draws a lot of fan art and original art of manga and anime characters.
I think she told me that in one convention she sold her art for about $700CDN, which I was shock to hear, but some people are talented, I am thankful we have an artist in the family... see my avatar her work hehe.

Do they sell their artwork out of a trunk or something? I don't know what anime conventions are like.
You know, if I could choose any kind of art to study/excel in, it'd be Nihonga ukiyo-e. I love the stuff like my avatar. It's so simple, but still realistic and beautiful.

No in anime conventions, they have to pay for a booth, and then just like a convention there is a dealer room where the dealers set up shop and then the artist present their work. This is the same for those who do the webcomics on the net, they have some conventions and they sell their artwork as well.

Looks good, Stormhammer. Did you scan a drawing and color it in Photoshop? That's what it looks like.
You are 100% correct Henjin. All the ones that you'll see me post will be done on one art program or another. Markers are cool and all, but expensive!! plus they don't have near the options of a Photoshop.

Yay, Stormhammer revived the thread! I could've done it, but I didn't have anything of much interest. I like the CG work you do on your work Stormhammer. I'd like to learn how to do that with my drawings.
Since I haven't posted them yet, I'll just post some photos I did.

Not bad, especially that last one. As far as how I do the pics, practice, reading online tutorials, and more practice. The pics I've posted have been the end result of a lot of patientice, hair pulling, loss of sleep, and other things best not mentioned. The ends justify the means in this case. :D

Here's 2 sketches and an ID (for my Deviant Art account) I made.
The first sketch (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/Chi_Angel/My%20Pictures/Commission___Birthday_Angel_by_Fall.jpg) was a commision for a guy in my D&D group last year. He wanted an Angel. It was for his birthday (so as you can guess, "Bonne fête" means "Happy Birthday" in french...). I like this drawing but I should re-do his clothes one day, when I'll do the line art and add the colors...
The second one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/Chi_Angel/My%20Pictures/Shovel_Fighter_by_Fallen13Angel.jpg) was inspired by one my brother D&D character, a Shovel-Fighter. The idea was funny so I tried and draw this character. Will do the line-art and add color one day. Probably.
And the ID (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/Chi_Angel/My%20Pictures/ID_OutofOrder.jpg). I just had this idea with me being out of order 'cause I was starving... erhm

Edit: Crap! The server the hosts the files is down! Oh well. Magical Sakura, Energy Arc, and Face of Innocence should work at any rate. Which is good, because they're my three best photographs ever.
I hope by "art" you don't just mean drawings and paintings because I've got some photographs here that I think definitely qualify as art. At least, according to silentplummet's definition. I have imagination and I certainly have something to say, I think.
They're fairly large files, so I won't link to them directly.
Magical Sakura (http://gallery.photo.net/photo/3260733-lg.jpg)

Pretty Sakura (http://www.gamingforce.com/xchange/data/userwork/id972/photos-photos/photos-photos_1112134169_PrettySakura.jpg)
And what I personally think is my best photograph ever: (It was even in the top rated photos section on photo.net for a while! It's also a featured picture on Wikipedia.)

Holy Crap.
The artwork I see here are soooo amazing! I've never been to a message board where there are so many good looking AND talented people! Wow.
I know you've heard this before and all, but Henjin, you got something going on there. You seriously should put up a site and then do commissions = you make your own price and work on your own time. People who commission you do it will have to accept your terms.
I see a lot of people here who have a knack for visualisation.
I used to draw and photoshop a lot, but I stopped. The last time I really got into photoshoping was a while back. Right now the only thing I photoshop is my croqui figures for classes in Fashion Design. But those are halfassed/heartedly done because I'm not into it.
I used to write an epic adventure story a while back but the site that hosted it kept falling and I didn't have any backups, so I lost motivation in continuing it. I doodled a lot in highschool.
But anyway, here's just one of my croqui. It was actually my frist time using Marker and watercolor. So it's very... um... amateur-ish.

Even though I'm not into fashion, I've always liked the way the designs are drawn, long and thin. Not real, but real enough.
I envy the people who can just sit down and draw something in the amount of time it takes someone to shit. And sometimes it seems like thats all I am doing.
I wouldn't consider myself an artist, because my eraser runs out before my pencil.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/katiekoneko/paint2.jpg
this was the beginning of a painting I did last year
I had never done portraits in oil paint before..
This was stage one (theres no major detail in the face or hair or background its real plain so don't judge it please.)
If I get my camera working maybe I can get a pic of the finished peice
I was happy with it after I got it done because I made sure to paint the hair strand by strand and there were fine lines for the lips and around the mouth
I even painted tiny red lines in the eyes were they were "bloodshot" a bit..
If I were in class again this year I would have gotten another chance to improve *sigh*
Each time I paint I get better..
but I havent painted in months and months.
