What's up everybody. After reading Az's great editorials, I found this forum and decided to join. You guys seem like a good bunch. Other forums I visit are very niche specific, and a general discussion forum where I can talk about random stuff is a cool thing to have. So anyway, just figured I'd say hi.
Room With Padded Walls is for random stuff. We TRY to keep proper serious discussion to the designated forum, but people like... well, like me... hijack it. :duh:

Hello, yep, umm... I am new... yeeessss.... ahhh.... I dunno what to say... My name on here is ~いらっしゃいませぇ~ Because in Japan I couldn't help but laugh at all the people yelling that at me. And sometimes it got so weird that I really wanted to say it back to them.... hahahaha~. I'm 16.. I live in New Zealand... I kind of suck at Japanese, though my entire class has this weird thought in their mind that I'm like, UBER great at Japanese. Went to Japan in April for a school trip, was there for 12 days, and was awesome, I love it soo much more than here, and It really made me think how much a hole NZ really is.
That's me. Yep.

Oh, opps :duh: I'm sorry~ Umm, it says "~Irasshaimasee~" It's what the shop keepers say when you walk in their store, but in Shinjuku and harajuku etc. they have people standing outside yelling "IRASSHAIMASE!!!!!" It's kind of funny... It means "How can I help you?" or "Welcome to my store" but not literally, obviously, because it would seem a bit weird for some random person standing outside with a sign saying "HOW CAN I HELP YOUUU???"

I'm Dave, a New Zealander currently living in Australia. I've studied Japanese on and off for a number of years, but have only really been seriously doing it for about 18 months, at uni. (if I make mistakes, slap me! reading/writing is my weak skill and its the only way I'm going to learn :P)

I was in this one store in Kyoto looking at stuff and the person in store said that like every 5 seconds and I thought I was going to go crazy. I wanted to leave but couldn't as I was waiting for my friends. Oh it was so annoying. They need to cool down on the "Irasshaimase."
Anyway, welcome to the forums :D

Occupation: Homeschool/Self-schooled student
Interests: Writing, reading, foreign languages, classical singing, archery, linguistics, drama, conlanging, ancient history, enjoying the outdoors, studying, et cetera.

Self-schooled, huh? How's that work? (I was a public school kid, of course.)
And welcome aboard. :D
Two countries I've vowed NEVER to ever go to: Australia and USA.
Don't care if you don't like the people, visit both places for the culture, history, scenery, happenings, etc.
There's more to a country than just the public image, you know. The US aren't just a bunch of fat slobs - well, not entirely ;) - and we're not just a bunch of overweight guys in singlets and thongs standing behind a barbeque with a beer... although the bbq-and-beer go down well whenever possible. ;)
I plan to visit NZ one day for its Maori history, all the great scenery and to investigate the something in the water that makes the women so hot. :)
Welcome aboard mate; I'd advise you watch how you say things a bit, though - what's typed on a forum somewhere is not always perceived on the other end as it's meant to be by you.

hahahaha~ I'm sure how you took it was exactly how I wanted it to be percieved.
I do agree with you there though. If I was ever to go to one of those countries, it would be for the history etc. The people do put me off a lot though, because I always end up having arguments with them and they just don't appeal to me... Though I can't say New Zealanders are any better in comparison, I'm sure if I wasn't brought up here, I wouldn't want to visit here either, hahahaha~ I sound so mean!.
Oh and btw, You'd probably have to look quite hard to find the Maori history here, the Europeans made it so you could find their history easily, but difficult to find the Maori. I think, from where I live, if you want to find some good Maori history, you'd have to travel about 4 hours north, or about 8 hours south to find anything, hahahahaha~

Ever heard of unschooling? It's quite similar to that, and though I don't adhere now strictly to the philosophy (which is basically that of a very unstructured education), my earlier education was conducted almost entirely in "unschooling" (I dislike the term a little).
I'm wary of making a succint definition of it for fear of oversimplification. It basically means that my education is motivated purely by the desire to learn, and also that I don't use the public education system. I use no formal grade system and have no set cirriculum. This, of course, gives me a lot more freedom to study what I want, including many subjects that are not offered in any the public schools where I live, while still ensuring that I receive the more basic catagories of knowledge. It also gives me the freedom to take things at a faster (or slower, if I need to concentrate on a specific area) pace than I would be allowed elsewhere. In addition, I get to take college courses when I want, which is wonderful.

Well, I'm almost 21 (my birthday is this week...woot!), and I've been in Japan for about 9 months now on a study abroad program. I studied Japanese for two years in college, and now I'm here, but I'm leaving in 2 months. I came to Japan about 5 years ago for a summer exchange in Hiroshima because I'd always been interested in Japan and wanted to see what it was like. Ummm...so I'm also a girl, and an American.
I will definitely be back here after I graduate next May, and do (as was told to me by a very drunk Scottish man on the last train home a couple weeks ago) "what every other fucking cunt does in Japan...teach English."
I'm currently living with an awesome host family in Urayasu, Chiba, but I might as well say Tokyo because it's only 15 minutes away by train.
If you ever see a group of very loud, very drunk American college students wandering around Tsudanuma, Makuhari, or Funabashi, it's probably me and my friends. :D But we sometimes say we're Canadian to throw people off...
Hello.
I like bodies and butts.

As I understand it, my name is Jeremiah. I've been told that I am 22 years old and currently live in northern California, about 45 minutes north of Sacramento. My gut tells me this, and it is thus.
That aside I'm currently a senior and precredential history major at CSU Sacramento. Ill be in Kyoto from June 13 until July 19th as part of a language intensive study program through UC Riverside. For that bit I'll be staying at the I-house with seven other people from the program. As I am participating in the beginner part of the program, my Japanese is very limited, although i can read and write hiragana/katakana with some proficiency, though at the moment i have no idea what it means.

Yeah, I guess I should post something here now that I've registered an account and everything.
I'm Ed, a Chinese-Canadian from Toronto. Born in Hong Kong, moved to Canada when I was 5, Chinese-illiterate. Them's the breaks, though looking back now I do wish I had kept up Chinese studies when I was a kid; learning 5000-8000 characters seems like an impossible task for me now.
I... know some Japanese! I think! It's all through self-study (around 2 years at this point), though, so as a consequence I'm more familiarly acquinted with casual/slang forms of speech. Put me in a formal situation and I'll probably feel very uncomfortable.
Maybe when I finally manage to graduate from University I'll spend a few years over in Japan to polish it up a bit more, heh.

Hi, hi. My real name is Brandon (but please call me by my forum name.) I joined this night to respond to a thread but once I signed up I realized the threat was a year old. Oh well, nice place you got here.
My interests include: people, Japanese and their culture, programming, computers, anime & manga, and... *pfft...* uh... oh ya. Let's top it off. Video games, but I haven't done those in awhile.

Hi everyone.
I am bad at introductions, so please forgive me if this sounds very lame.
I currently live in Vancouver, Canada. However, starting 6/29, I will be living in Tokyo, Japan :hat:. I will be an English Conversation Instructor for AEON. I don't know where exactly in Tokyo my apartment will be, but my branch school will be in Shimokitazawa.
I have been browsing the Japan 'blogosphere' for months now, and just when I was giving up hope of finding a site where the posters are actually mature, I found this forum. Seems like a great community!
Nice to meet everyone.

Hey everyone. I've been reading the boards quite a while. and registered to post a question a while back. Since i've been following the boards pretty closely lately, I figured I might want to start contributing, and the least I could do is finally introduce myself.
So yeah, I'm a 25 year old guy living in Reno, Nevada. I studied Japanese during the college years, but haven't managed to get myself in a position to use it. Instead, I make slot machines. To head off any at least some of the questions, no, there's no trick to winning...

Hello  I'm Josh. 15 years old. Student. Lately, I have been amazed by Japanese culture and stumbled across this site. After reading the witty entries, I decided to sign up for a forum account, and here I am.
I listen to music all the time. Mostly rock or jazz. Ella Fitzgerald, Jeff Lorber, etc. But yah, hopefully I should be able to fit in, regardless of my seemingly young age :) Pleasure to meet you all! :afro:

Well when I went to Israel...several of my friends had been to Japan, worked there...and the stories/experiences they had sounded lovely...which made me more enthused with the idea of travelling there...so hopefully early next year I will be in Japan on a work visa...:joytear:

Hey, I've been posting here for a few months. I guess it's about time I introduce myself!
My pseudonym is El_CJ, and I joined here because I enjoy reading Az's editorials. I have very little interest in anime, I care nothing about Japanese culture/language, and am decidedly not a "Japanophile." I don't imagine I will ever visit Japan.
I am very careful with regards to what I post, and have already revised this short "Greetings!" message several times. I am not obsessive-compulsive, I am simply paranoid that anything I post on the internet will be read somewhere, by somebody who could potentially affect me professionally or personally in some minor fashion.
So, yeah. Hello! :eyepop:

I've been using this handle since about 7-8 years ago. We had to pick Japanese names in highschool Japanese, and I picked Murakumo. I feel nerdy referring to that now, but for the internet's sake my forum handle has always remained the same.
I'm in my senior year at a University and am getting TESL certified and majoring in East Asian Studies (only because I got screwed out of the studio arts major).
Once I graduate I will be going to Japan to teach English and plan to frequent arcades and train for MMA in the evenings.
I've met with the president of PRIDE and talked to him for a while, and my goal is to one day make it into, at the least, one of their smaller shows.
All my life I've been working to use low tier and make them into top tier (cue fighting games).
Oh yea, as maybe suggested my the attempt at entering a studio arts major, I am an artist as well. I was looking at doing conceptual art and storyboarding... dean of the department went on vacation 2 weeks and couldn't sign for my classes, and I wasn't going to wait an extra year to graduate. =/
So yea... MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), video games, art
Once I am a bit older and able to get some amount of money put away I will also be a lot more active in investing and travel. Poor college students aren't afforded those luxuries. =x
and.... I <3 j00 all!

Hey guys.
I'm Barns from Christchurch, New Zealand. I'm just finishing up a BA at university here, a BA I thought was useless - until I found out it's ostensibly all I need to get a job teaching English in Japan for a year or more.
So, that's what I'm going to do. Around March/April 2007, I intend to move to Japan having found a job teaching in a school, college or company. My capabilities with the Japanese language are minimal, but not zero; I am helped by working at a souvenir retail shop where most of the staff are Japanese. One might say I'm a bit of a Japanophile - especially since my recent discovery of 'Ayaka no Totsugeki Eikaiwa' - but it isn't an all-consuming passion. I just like the people.
Like pretty much all of you, I've been reading the editorials for ages, and finally decided to sign up to the forum now that I'm definitely going to Japan. Y'all seem like a decent bunch of people; I look forward to engaging in meaningless debates with all of you.
I love film above all else, and will probably be found wherever it is discussed. I also love football (to you American chuckballers, that's 'soccer').
Blah blah, message end. Cheers.
