Hello. I am a college student that stumbled upon the "I am a Japanese School Teacher" editorials when someone brought up Kancho on a Live Journal community about 9 months ago. Seriously, I can't make this up. I figured I had lurked the MB's long enough and that it was time for me to play along. I am in my second year of studying Japanese, but my major is Asian Studies and not just Japan/ese. I typo like nobody's business but I will try and take some care because not everyone understands fluent typo.

I like reading and playing video games, even though I don't have much time for either. I am a recent WoW survivor, because reality takes priority. I hate FPS but I will play them as requested. Other interests include body modification and offensive jokes. Yeah, I'm from Ohio so please don't expect me to be that interesting because I will surely dissappoint.

That's as good as this is going to get.

Rabid would be.....

Even though I have like a gajillion Chun-li pictures in my folder now... @_@ I don't even remember getting half of them! Mountain Dew: Code Red is one hell of a drug. I'm glad to report, on all of the pictures, she's clothed.

Hi...

Decided to come out of lurk mode and finally registered myself.
I am an unfortunate 18 year old Korean female.
I am also a law student in Sydney, Australia.
I like bunnies.
Oh, and an Aries.

...All of the above traits point to a very aggro personality, if one would believe it...

Personally, I think the fact that I like bunnies probably clinches it.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

Age: 23
(and not used to being 23 yet - I feel like I have to admit to being an adult soon....maybe soon....or not)

Gender: female

Ethnicity: Minnesotan
(ehheh - that means Germanic/Scandinavian...though I don't think I can claim to any Scandinavian)

Location: Middle of Nowhere, Aomori-ken, Japan
(I really mean it, the Middle of Nowhere. Though still technically on Honshu, I'm a forty minute drive past a town called inakadate - and for those who speak Japanese, yes, the inaka in there actually does use the same kanji that means "The Sticks")

Languages: (spoken) English, German, Japanese; (read) English, German, Latin, Greek, French, Spanish ....though my Greek is really rusty

Occupation: ALT on the JET Program
(one JHS, three elementary schools - gotta love the cute & tiny ones!)

Interests: languages (self-proclaimed Word Nerd), music (never met a genre that I didn't like), drawing (though I'm horribly self-conscious about showing them to anybody), and cooking (it's killing me not to have a decent oven here in Japan)

Other stuff: Like many people here, lurked for a while, but have not posted till now, I think. This forum, particularly the Japanese Teacher editorial, saved my sanity. Not kidding. I was suffering some pretty serious culture shock this summer after coming to Japan - not from Japanese culture, it should be pointed out, but from living alone for the first time in my life - and Az's hilarious editorial got me through the worst of it and back on my feet. If laughter truly is the best medicine, Az, you should be selling your editorial next to the tylenol at $20 a box. You and the guy who put up pictures on syberpunk.com. Not as many as engrish.com, but the comments are great. :D

Edit: I actually think I may have made a post or two at the forum before, but blasted if I know which thread or what I did/said.

I'm Ray.
I was born in the Phillippines, my mom went to work in Hawaii and managed to bring me over when I was two. She would bring in my dad, brother, and her parents soon after.

As a result I had to go to the immigration office when I was about 8 so I could become a US citizen. My parents assumed that the requirements for me would be the same as for them, so I studied and memorized the three branches of government, the bill of rights and some other facts about the US government.

Imagine my surprise when all I had to do was fill out my name, sign it, and say the Pledge of Allegiance!

At around 18 I got island fever and had to get as far away as possible. I chose to go to college in CT and have been stuck on the east coast ever since. Now I'm 34, married, living in northern Virginia, and trying to find a way to be able to live and work in Hawaii. Its good that my wife wants to live there too - after I took her there for our honeymoon, but there aren't that many jobs in aerospace there.

I used to be really into anime and manga, now not so much. I'm a student in two martial arts - naginata and jodo, and a beginner in each. Two things I miss most are the beach and the mountains of home, especially in the winter. I don't think I can ever get used to winters on the east coast.

Lalala... long time lurker, first time poster. (This is probably the most said line in introduction threads or any introductory post...)

Studied Japanese in High School for 2 years (4 semesters total, half a year each), but now I currently have nowhere to learn and improve my Japanese because the stupid universities here tricked me into going to to the crappier universities... I really want to learn more, but I think I've gotten to the point where I probably won't learn anymore unless I actually live in the actual country. After I graduated from High School I started translating anime/j-dramas(I've translated stuff like Samurai7 which was a pain to do cause they use archaic Japanese stuff...) to improve my Japanese. It really did help a lot, but eh... I kinda wanna improve more on my conversational skills. So, now I'm able to understand 90% of any conversation without much problem but my brain isn't used to conversing in Japanese so when I do actually converse in Japanese, sometimes it might take a while for the sentence to come out correctly...

I think I've gotten the reading/listening comprehension down pretty well. I can read game magazines easy, but that's because I'm well knowledged in that area... Being Chinese also helps. Kanji is not a problem for me! I probably take that for granted though...

So... I've lived in Taiwan for 4 years and in Canada for 14 years(almost 15!). Can you guess my age? :P

I'm Frank. When not studying to be a teacher, I spend most of my time exposing Microsofts lies to the public (backwards compatible, my ass), and honing my ninja-skillz.

I live in Denmark, a place where standing out from the crowd is frowned upon. It isn't good if your dumber than the average bear, but being smarter than the average bear is bad too. Because, that naturally makes you an elitist asshole, who needs a good kicking, to keep you down. Or something. Lately, one of our newspapers has published some cool pictures of Mohammed, teh prophet, which has caused an uproar in islamic countries all over the world, and several state leaders, including Turkey, a supposed democracy, has asked our prime minister to impose restrictions on the freedom of the press.

I'm 24. And I live in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.

And, even though I've been active on this forum for some time now, I never got around to writing in this thread.

Hello everyone! I've been reading the OutPostNine stuff for a while now, and I must say, it is hillarious. Actually... a few of my anti-Japan kind of friends are getting annoyed about me talking too much about it. Oh well, screw them.

So, a little bit about myself then shall we? I'm 16 years old and in highschool, and I am the craziest one there is. People tell me all the time that I brighten their days with the stunts I pull. In nineth grade I actually wore bright neon green wig to school for no reason whatsoever. Yeah. I'm pretty random. Come the 3rd of January, it's going to be a KiKi plushie. Hells yeah! Expect the most random things from me. You've been warned.

Not only that, but I'm obsessed with anime, and everything that has to do with the Japanese culture. It can be pretty bad at times, because there are certain foods that I can no longer eat with a fork. I have to use chopsticks... I need help. u.u;;;;

But, on the better half of society, I am also into wholesome activites, like being on the computer. I am a guru at all things technical. Well, getting there at least. I love my graphic design and web design. Can't help it, I'm addicted. And it's what I'm going to college for.

Then, after college, I'm off to Japan for a while.

Thanks for all the warnings Az.

I guess that's about it. I'm really long winded.... u.u;;;;

My name is Katie, I am a 24 year old Australian who happens to live in the Netherlands. I create alot of stuff.. Artwork, websites and music mainly.

One of my bands: http://www.filosofem.com/hellmary/
I have artwork/pics and stuff on here: http://www.myspace.com/asexualpredator

Umm I started reading Az's editorials one day at my last job in Australia. The people in my office were fucking lazy and I finished all my work too fast everyday so I wanted to read something that looked like it could be "work" as in a white page with writing on it. I can't remember where I found the link but at certain points I burst out laughing so hard I had tears much to my workmates confusion. They asked me a few times what I was laughing at but what was I going to say? "Oh some big American guy getting his dick felt up by Japanese children"

Then I ended up going to Waseda as a ryugakusei, then taught English there a bit, and then was sent back to Japan again a few years later as an expat. So, I've lived in Tokyo, Shimane, and Osaka... Out of all of those places, I liked Shimane the best as the people were incredible; even if it did get tons of snow in the winter. As Az said, Japan is a great (albeit WEIRD sometimes) place, but I'd not want to stay there forever...even if I do miss it a lot at times and get very natsukashii about it.

Currently back in Chicago and I don't really use my Japanese any more, although I amazingly remeber quite a bit - definitely need to study it again somehow. And, will be moving to the UK sometime early in 2006.

Oh, my nickname isn't a real word, just something I made up that would mean something like electric being I suppose. You all make me feel old, so I'm not saying my age, other than I'm older than Az I think.

On a random note, Romaji drives me mad, and don't PM me saying I should have said ningen wa, as I don't care. :P

Have been lurking, will now introduce myself in case I want to pop out of lurking to make any comments soon. :) I'm Grace, a Japanese major from Massachusetts. I grew up in the U.S., but my parents moved back to Taiwan a few years ago, so I've been splitting my summers between Taipei and Tokyo.

English is my main language, but I also speak Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, and a tiny bit of Dutch. Hopefully I'll be studying in the Tokyo area after graduation next year and become fluent in Japanese soon! I'm planning to study comparative literature in graduate school in a few years, so I'm often frustrated by my inadequate language skills.

My other interests are art (drawing), piano, and watching dramas. :p I read the editorials here after having them foisted upon me by multiple friends ("There's this guy in Japan...!"). Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu~

I've been studying Japanese for two years, because I'm a nerd who's been obsessed with all things Japan since I could speak.

I'm Parker.
16 and born in New York City, NY
Currently reside in Tennessee
High school sophomore
Started reading OP9 awhile ago, but just recently discovered the forums. I went to Japan on an exchange trip last Summer, and it changed my life to say the least. I had taken Japanese at a private middle school, but then tranferred to a public high school that didn't have the language as a course. I began seeing a tutor weekly to continue learning, as while there was no language program, there was a yearly exchange trip there. I kept on studying, at a slower pace than in school but while still keeping the skills that I had gained. As the exchange trip drew nearer I studied somewhat harder in anticipation, but nothing could've prepared me for that trip. I won't try and explain why it meant so much to me and how much it changed the way I think, but I will say that it caused me to change my goals in life. I now study my white ass off, often, in the pursuit of learning Japanese. I keep contact with friends in Japan by communicating by e-mail in Japanese, and have gotten quite good at typing Japanese and comprehending a good bit of kanji by sight, but while still keeping my writing skills sharp. I want to one day move to Japan, go to college there, and develop my life as someone who knows Japanese on a near-native level and has managed to become successful. Maybe my expectations of myself are too high, but I try to live up to them.

That is so cool that you participated in an exchange trip! I bet you had loads of fun! So it really changed a lot of goals in your life? For the better, I would think, yes? Well, good luck in your studies. I hope you accomplish your future goals. :)

Welcome to the forums and please post often. Enjoy! :D

Hi, I'm Lisa. Lurked for a while, but finally joined. I'm a 19-year-old English/secondary ed major. Yay teaching!

I was also an exchange student when I was 15. It was one of those six-week things, so it didn't help my language skills much. I wanted to do study abroad in college, but since my education program is going to take forever, I'm thinking I'll do JET for a year before I start teaching here and before I do my graduate work. But I still have two years to figure that out so it's no rush.

I first started getting interested in Japan because I was a self-proclaimed "otaku". Nowadays, I shudder to remember that stage of my life, but the interest in Japan stuck. I'm a language nut and Japanese is my mountain.

Working on a real degree but it's a slow crawl, the upside is with the sheer amount of bad karma I'm burning off I expect to win the lottery sometime in the near future. Got hooked on OP9 when it popped up in Digg and keep coming back for the humour, just discovered the forums. Never had the opportunity to study Japanese but always dug the anime and horror movies figure it's time to learn a bit more about the culture.

Hey, I'm Mac. I'm 17 years old and live in NY (Long Island), USA. I'm a senior in High School, currently waiting for admissions decisions from various schools. I find out if I'm accepted to my first choice, Tufts University, in early February. My prospective major is mathematics, but I'm going for premed (I want to be a surgeon).

I discovered OP9 on Christmas, and had a good laugh.

I speak a bit of Japanese, but I don't have much use for it at the moment (learned it because I was working with Japanese people over the internet). My language of study will actually be Mandarin when I enter college.

That should be enough to start the stalkers off : )

I'm at current finishing high school on my own (I do it in a system without teachers or fellow students, which might just be the reason why I'm a semester behind my generation), and next semester I should be able to take a degree in History, and Japanese as well.

Hello my name is Nicholas Havoc Jackson. I was named after the Mi-28 "Havoc" . I'm black Russian. I don't have accent unfortunately being born in America but I can fake one pretty good which is always fun when talking to people. I love Ravens and Crows. My Japanese friend calls me Karasu-meh which pretty much means bastard crow to my understanding. My hobbies include fighting and women. My dream is to met other black russians so we can start a alliance for world conquest.

Hello there, Watashi no namae wa Makkasu desu -- Marc, or Wal will do. I am currently learning kendo. Sometimes I practice my archery too. Pretty much I do stuff that makes me sound hip and cool and slightly mysterious. Did you know i play guitar too? Does that make you wonder what other mysteriously attractive things I do? Don't kid yourself, because i'm gonna hit you with a little thing called the truth. The truth is that you are really turned on right now and for that i apoligize. Or do I? (I spelled something wrong!? I have failed. *stab* heegagurgurk.)

The editorials on Outpost Nine have brought some joy to my miserable school-work-W.o.w-sleep-school schedule for a while now and I've finally decided to check out the Bbs. (Any other people on Wow feel free to look me up for a quest or two sometime --Walpurgis: lvl17 Tauren warrior. And If you're high lvl maybe you could find the godly grace to power level me? Hmmm?)
I hope to make some friends on here and contribute to conversation.

Hey guys,

just thought I'd say hi since I signed up for the board. I've been reading Az's adventures in Japan for quite some time now :)

There's not much for me to say, other than I currently live and work in Vienna as a video games programmer. I'm originaly from Scotland, and moved here about three month ago after an 18 month stay in Australia.

In my spare time (girlfriend and work allowing) I love to snowboard, play guitar, read, do kung-fu and I guess it goes without saying that I enjoy paying video games.

so that's about it!

Well anyway, greetings. I'm Fob. 26. I live in L.A. as a graphic artist/photographer. Nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to shooting the shit with you guys on this forum.

Hi, ahmm...I should properly introduce myself. I'm new to posting but not new to Outpostnine. I get a kick from reading Az's entries. For the World Cup, it's going to be tough to follow anyone, seeing as Ireland fell during qualifying to France and the mighty....Switzerland ????? :duh:

I prefer following the underdog, so Japan are as good a team as any to follow. With Brazil (my tip to win), Croatia (strong!) and Australia (Guus Hiddink!) sharing their group, they've got no chance of getting beyond the group stages though

In the English Premiership, I'm an Arsenal fan - outside of the Premiership, I suppose the flair and passion of FC Barcelona is difficult to fail to admire.
Next year, I'll be following another underdog, Shonan Bellmare of the J2 league. I'd wager that I'll be one of the more conspicuous of the 5000 regular fans.

I find it a big ego boost to talk to any Japanese person about football though...there is just an assumption amongst my Japanese friends that I am some kind of God on the football field - it's nice, I actively encourage worship :D

During the last World Cup, I followed Korea (ex- Guus Hiddink!) after Ireland's penalty agony against Spain, and was happy to watch a biased referee guide them to 4th place - I've even got the Korean strip (I'm not taking that to Japan)

Incidently, the 2002 World Cup is possibly the only non-economic/career-based reason I'm studying Japanese. The reception the Irish fans gained seemed so friendly!
I heard that Guinness is expensive in Japan though :( - no chance of being a stereotypical Irishman now...I'll be forced to stick to whiskey instead.

My name is Jessica. I'm from Tennessee, and I was an exchange student in Omihachiman/Kyoto in 2005. I had to change families due to unfortunate circumstances (and moved to Kyoto), but I think my experience was better because of it!
A JET at my school suggested Outpost Nine. She said it was entertaining. When I returned home, I checked it out!

As for interest, I draw mostly. I like reading, too. The other exchange students thought I was odd that I wasn't really an anime fan, but I have to admit I have a secret love of Studio Ghibli. :D
