I was pissed... Dude stole a good deal of money from me writing checks off of my credit card. I called the company and had the charges reversed, but still pissed that some a-hole stole from me...
Well the sheriff dept just called me and they found the guy! He's "detained" Wooo! Take that naughty spawn! You just got pwned!

A common misconception is that he was stealing money from YOU. He in fact was stealing money from the credit card company (or the merchant in some cases) because you are not liable for a penny.
I should know these things because after all it is my job. :-P

Still, that's gotta feel way better than him not getting caught. I'm happy for ya. :)
I know how you feel, too. I sent in a check for admission to a convention a couple of years back through the mail. Packed my stuff, traveled to Chicago, went to the admissions desk....only to find out that they had no record of my check ever arriving. The cops acknowledged that it had probably been stolen, but from the way the guy had validated it, claimed that he would probably never be found. I don't even know if they tried to look. It feels a little vindicating that they are catching some of the creeps out there who do that, though. Maybe I'll tell myself that the creep who stole money from you/the card company/whoever is the same guy who stole my money. Then I can pretend he's behind bars.

Damn right it does. I was happy I got my money back, which I did with no problem, but it's still annoying. I freaked when I my card was maxed out when it was WELL below max the last time I used it.
This isn't the first time it's happened either. Someone got a hold of my replacement card on a whole 'nother account and used it to buy gas all over hells half acre. That was my first experience. It was weird because I thought I used it and forgot, but it just didn't add up. It was a painless experience getting it cleared up, but still... I am imagining that this guy is the same guy who originally stole my other card. It definitely is more satisfying that way...
Some how the guy was caught. I only reported it to the credit company, i don't know how their investigation went, but one of the store owners that had a bounced check pressed legal charges or investigated (one of the checks presented "returned and unpaid"). The liquor store owner turned out to be a sheriff deputy. Oh man must he feel dumb. It looked real fishy though when they faxed me the copies of the cancelled checks, he signed my name funky and also wrote two phone numbers. I wanted to call them soooo bad and threaten him...
I couldn've done something dirty like making a deal with him and reporting it anyways... but damn I don't think I could deal with the consequences, getting the "Umm, the sheriff wants to talk to you" phone call was a bit disturbing and I HAVEN'T done anything wrong. I would crack faster than an egg holding an elephant if I did do something wrong.
EDIT: Boy am I glad I'm back in school, this post sounds absolutely terrible!!
Go to http://www.ftc.gov, follow the links for Identity Theft and fill out the complaint forms! If they've alrady opened one account, they have access to your credit report and other personal information and can ruin your credit for decades.
The main thing is to put a fraud alert on all three of your credit reports. This doesn't prevent you from getting credit or cancel any that you might already have. It only requires the companies to ask for additional information only you'd know to get new credit, i.e. two previous addresses or that kind of thing. It also alerts the credit companies to watch out for suspsicious activity, like a rash of new credit applications or unusual spending patterns.
