i've recently seen two refrences to smashing melons as a fun activity in japan... both happened imply it would happen on a beach.. anyone know WTF that's about?
When you go to the beach, you smash a watermelon. It's a tradition....
And the rest, as they say, is mystery.

spring - watch sakura fall
summer - eat shaved ice, kids smash watermelons
fall - go out to the mountains and look at colored leaves
winter - kneed rice cakes
that's basically how everyone, ideally, spends their year. When you can spend a year like that, you are considered "shiawase"... in my book.

You can think of it as a Japanese version of Pinata (the Spanish/Mexican? game), except with a watermellon. A child is given a stick and a watermellon is placed closeby. Then the child is blindfolded and spun around to disorient him/her, and then people will shout directions on where the watermellon is. As you can expect, there's a lot of random swings before the watermellon is successfully hit. Afterwards you eat the smashed watermellon.

Watch Otsuka Ai's music video in the Entertainment section of this board. That should give you a good introduction. (or maybe that's where your question came from?)

I can understand it being fun... the only question I have is, doesn't that waste a perfectly good melon? XD Especially if you do it on the -sand-?

There is a Middle Eastern saying:
"A woman for duty,
a boy for pleasure,
a melon for ecstasy".
People are doing far stranger things with melons elsewhere.

Way to go, you broke the internet. :(
I have seen countless references to watermelon smashing in anime. Whenever the group goes to the beach, they just do it. I gathered it's just tradition.
Rika - I think you left out the culture fests and summertime festivals where the girls don Yukatas. :P

I used to have some pics of this activity from our school's summer BBQ up on my website. Looks like I took them down a while ago to make more space. As Dude 500 said, it's basically the Japanese version of a Pinata. We always did it on a tarp, so sand in the watermelon wasn't an issue for eating it later.
