Has anyone seen the Smily video?

Click if you have not (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7213370116473161310&q=ai+otsuka)

i just cracked up when at about 35 seconds into the video we see Ai kanchoing this half naked guy.

Me: "Wait a sec...wat the hell did she just do with her hands??!!"

*rewinds*

"No way..."

*rewinds*

"Holy shit! she just kanchoed that guy!!"

Smily! ^^

How adorable. And i'm not refering to the adult woman attempting to sound like a 12 year old, rather the kancho.

Yeah, Otsuka Ai has 2 categories of songs: The "I'm 12 years old" songs and the slow/sentimental songs. I frankly can't stand much of the former. Sakuranbo ticks me off.

The Kancho goes in perfectly with the "I'm 12 years old" thing I suppose :P

Cutey Honey:
O_O!!!!! Does anyone know when this song was written?
I heard this song when I was five (1995/96)!!

This was the ending song of some shoujo anime. (used to be a fan of Sailor Moon at age 5) I don't remember anything about the anime, but I remember in the ending animation, there's a teenage girl (who seemed mature to five-year-old little me) standing by a lamppost at night just as the line " この頃 はやりの女の子 お尻の小さな 女の子" was sung. That means "the popular girls lately are the ones with a small butt". And I remember looking at the girl's butt and tellling myself something alone the line of "so I've got to get a small butt myself". :o

Even now, once in a while, I just remember that line about the small butt. I didn't think I'll ever hear it again.... what a surprise.

I guess. Although I remember it to be a lot more romantic than that little profile picture... I guess that's a difference between how I perceived things back then and now.

Anyhow, thanks for sharing the link. I like nostalgic things. The video itself was...ehh.

I agree 1000%.

Her serious stuff is actually pretty good. I like it.

It's that nasally kiddy Sakuranbo/Happy Days crap that I can't stand. Ugh. If she did less of that and more of the serious stuff, I'd be on board.

Not surprisingly, she's best known for the kiddy crap.

Slightly off topic, but has there been a discussion as to why japanese singers try to sound like they are a lot younger than they really are? I've noticed this through voice acting and their singing.

Please tell me you can't really find an adult woman walking the streets, ready to throw a peace sign, sounding like a 12 year old.

Is it the whole societal preoccupation with lolicon?

Yes. Japanese men like young girls. The end.

I think a lot of singers/celebrity women are older than they let on. Even if they do reveal their true age, they act like little girls. I saw this one woman on TV (at least that I'm thinking of now...there are so many more) that's in her 30's but acts more immature than my JHS kids. That's disgusting.

In Japanese, it's called burikko - or acting cute. I hate it. Otsuka Ai is burikko, which is why I don't particularly like her. She's shown that she has talent with her serious songs, but she also goes the burikko route. Not that I can fault her for it - Japanese men love that kind of shit. But I don't.

Personally, I much prefer acting cute to acting emo, scene, slutty, etc. Then again, maybe I have a much greater appreciation for cute (and not in the loli way) than most people. I'm not saying that full-grown woman should act cute 24/7 just because it's... cute, but sometimes it's fun to let go of your serious side.

hm... maybe the definition of "cute" does not cover nearly as much as "kawaii". From what I've been taught, being kawaii also means doing chores and keeping the house neat and tidy. Is this true?

The Japanese word "kawaii" goes beyond the appearance. In goo, it says it can be used even for guys. I think kawaii is for personality and appearance. The English word 'cute' can only mean appearance, maybe?

Xenotrauma

Naw, cute can be appearance... but it's for personality too.

Example: I used to know a Japanese girl who was by no means physically cute. But if you put 3 or 4 margaritas in her she'd start hopping around like a bunny and tilting her head up at you and making weird faces. THAT is also "cute" :D

CNagy

Depends on how it is used; specifically, what it is referring to. A person can be cute, or the way she smiles can be cute. Essentially, a person can look cute or a person can do something cute (and the real winner is a girl who is cute and acts cute. :D ) Apparently, my "What? Me?" innocent look is cute as far as my girlfriend is concerned, for example, whilst I think her habit of making a little halo above her head after poking me in the side is rather cute.

but that's not her personality...that's her actions.
Cnagy's version of cute is closer... like, people can be cute without trying to be cute. Like, even someone who's mad can be cute...? I've seen it used in various places. what about innocence? does cute also cover that?

Yeah, it's to be said that かわいい (kawaii) could be considered as a lifestyle. I didn't know how all-encompassing it was until I went last summer. One of my friends has a cute everything, down to quite possibly the cutest bedroom in the universe. Using "kawaii" for guys is used in the context of "wow that boy is so cute/hot". I didn't hear it used in the "doing chores and keeping the house neat and tidy" context, but it may be true. If so, I didn't know...

This is well said and I agree. I think it's a good song and I enjoy this kind of cute and fun style. I think with these kind of vocals people either really enjoy it or really, really hate it. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground.

Off topic, all of my friends and I got that response to everything that we said about ourselves while we were on a month-long exchange trip in Japan. "You can breathe air!? かっこいい(kakkoii)"
note to high-school exchange students who can drive: this seems to get the biggest "wow" response, since you can't drive in Japan until 18. Be careful, the following utterance of かっこいい by everyone within audible distance can be deafening.

I noticed the same thing when my Japanese class hosted students here. If you say something about yourself, you get some response like "OMG ROXORS." If you say anything in Japanese, you get "NIHONGO UMAI!" It really got old... and makes you feel bad since you, as a normal American, don't really say such things back without seeming weird.

I make a point to be impressed with even the least bit of English usage by Japanese people (that haven't had immersion i.e. living in America for several years). When you think about it, it's pretty damned hard for them to learn all of the confusing grammar rules and tenses in English.

Does anyone else find the random English bits you hear in just about every J-Pop song amusing?

There's nothing wrong with being cute...naturally cute. Ultimate Sweetness is naturally cute. She's not trying to do anything, it's just how she is. When Ultimate Sweetness folds her hands on her desk, sits upright, and pays 100% attention to my speech, complete with "Oh, I see" head bobbing and little gasps of "Oh, so that's how!" .... it is unbearably cute. Mortal humans can't even look at it. But she's not doing this because she thinks it's cute, she is 100% serious. That's how she is.

I don't like acting cute because they're trying to be something they're not. It's not natural. "Here, let me put Mickey Mouse stickers on my cell phone, tie my hair in pigtails, and giggle like a little girl - that's cute, right?" ....No. It's, I feel, the same reason why we dislike wiggers - they're ultimately fake. But the acting cute attitude is a huge part of Japanese culture, including the media. Otsuka Ai has shows us she can carry a tune and make a good song...but she still makes songs where she bobs up and down and wailes like a 12-year old. Have you ever heard Hamasaki Ayumi talk in an interview or something? She uses this incredibly high-pitched voice...which is not her real talking voice.

But acting cute is accepted, even encouraged in Japan, because this place is all about the image. The reality doesn't matter, so long as the surface looks good. Me, I hate fakeness - it's like being lied to, and choosing to believe the lie.

I'd have to say I agree with Otsuka Ai's music.. I found that song Kingyo Hanabi and was like "wow, this is a great song!" then proceeded to look for more of her (always on the lookout for new music) and found most of them to be the 12 year old pop happy happy songs which I'm not very fond of. Though the rest of her music is wonderful. I'm loving 'Cherish'

Also, on a side note: can you believe Koda Kumi tried out for Morning Musume -- Twice?
Man the way I see her now and the way should would inevitably be in MM, I can't even imagine!

While not to this extreme, I do notice that girls in general talk in a higher pitched and sweeter, gentler voice when being polite, or trying to be attractive I guess....not all, but definitely some...you can really tell with alto-voice type people...then when you converse with them in a private setting, they relax, and their voice deepens (not like Barry White-deep...just relatively deeper)
