Well, there's an anime one... so why not a manga one? All manga aren't made into anime, and in some cases the manga is better (as opposed to being on equal ground).
I personally enjoy manga more than I do anime, matter of personal preference.
But I digress, favorite manga(s)?
Mine current likings are are:
DeathNote
Happy
Naruto (Manga > anime)
Fullmetal Alchemist (See "Naruto")
ManiacLove

The only Manga I like nowadays I Deep Love.
Sailor Moon is still my utlimate favorite. (Manga > Anime as well.)
I used to be a Tenchi muyo fan.

Right now I'm really into Samurai Deeper Kyo, Bleach, and Fushigi Yugi (I can't help it! I love the fluffy romance stories! ;) ) I also like Naruto, FMA, and Rurouni Kenshin (one of my all time favs!). I just started getting into the Tsubasa Chronicle manga and I really like it so far.
I have to agree with you ArkhanTerra, I like manga better than anime. :)

Tenjou Tenge (Manga > anime)
Naruto (as above)
Tsubasa Reservior
xxxHolic
Bleach
Mahou Sensei Negima
Prince of Tennis
Tekko (特公)
Groove Adventure Rave
Bowling King (this one IIRC is a taiwanese artist)
Ichigo 100%
Initial D
AirGear (Highly recommended)

3X3 Eyes
GTO
Shonan Jun'aigumi (essentially Onizuka before he became a teacher)
Dragon Voice
Pretty Face
I's
Movie Girl Ai
and a whole ton i can't remember.
I personally love Oh Great's art. very stylish. Toru Fujisawa as well, his latest book is a very different genre from GTO and i think he's more used to blood and gore.

Recently started collecting Kozure Okami (Lone Wolf and Cub) and the more I read the more I'm convinced that no one besides Wakayama Tomisaburo fit that role.
I also got volume 1 of Karasu Tengu Kabuto, but I think the Translation is fucked up, they made alot of amatuerish mistakes. Some cool ideas in that one though, so its not a total disaster, but the translator needs to figure out what he's doing.

Right now I'm reading Hellsing. It's much better than the anime.
Mine current likings are are:
DeathNote
Happy
Loveless (from what I've read)
Naruto (Manga > anime)
Fullmetal Alchemist (See "Naruto")
YAY for DEATH NOTE!!! they're making it into an anime, and there was also a "easter egg" in the last FMP where you could see L riding a bike, and the back of Misa and Raito (Light) and what looked like his dad.
Anyway, on topic I like Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Angel Sanc, Honey & Clover and a whole bunch of shoujo. :D

that's the screenshot from FMP that someone linked me to, although I don't know where she heard it was confirmed. :\
Um... isn't that yaoi? I remember someone asked me to translate it once, and I got grossed out and I turned her down.
It's shonen-ai, which is boys love, what i've read of the manga has no sex, nor does the anime, but if you can't handle two guys kissing, don't bother.
Yaoi typically means it's pornographic.

Hey, do they have an uncensored american manga release of Tenjou Tenge, cuz I looked it up last night on Barnesandnoble and like it was all censored and stuff....
No they don't, there was a huge uproar at CMX because of this, because everything on their sites say "And it's pure manga — 100% the way the original Japanese creators want you to see it. In English!" but they censored Tenjou anyway and there was a huge uproar on the cmx boards, however it doesn't look like they'll release an uncensored version.

[QUOTE=deepbluevibes]?? What new series are you talking about? GTO was the latest one I know of... the shonen ai gumi and bad company series came before them and were produced before GTO 0_o
QUOTE]
I was actually referring to the tekko series. only 3 books so far (i buy Taiwanese translated mangas) but its looking to be promising.
Edit: forgot to update my list. i've gotten both Chobits manga and finished the anime in like 3 days flat. Nice concept... now to find me a Persocon....
i googled about deathnote anime + FMP.
nothing at all came up.
it's fake, for two reasons;
no news announcements ANYWHERE about this picture or death note anime
and every person in that picture, is just colored and cut from the manga. i've seen all of those poses before.
Take it with a grain of salt, I have no idea, all I know is what I was told and the link to the screenshot. I also found someone who said that the scene occurs at 9:50 in the episode and there are larger and animated gif style versions of the screen shot in this thread: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=38403
So it seems that the screenshot is real, but the there's no "solid" evidence that an anime will be occuring, that was just an assumption on someones part.

Hmm...manga.
My current favorite is Berserk (as evidenced by my avatar.)
Then there's Ghost in the Shell, although the follow up, Man-Machine Interface, felt rather lacking to me.
I've also read through a considerable amount of Hellsing, Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, and Battle Royale.
Blame!, Sakura Taisen, and Full Metal Panic Overload are manga I've just started reading and I enjoy all three of them.

Could We not bitch about anime being not as good as the mangas?
I personally am tired of everyone going on and on about how anime sucks compared to the manga. We know already, it goes without saying, the source material is always better.
There are exceptions to the rule, but on the whole, its pretty much true for everything.
can we stop the Manga>anime comments now?
Sorry, but that just seems to be the whole reason people post in the thread is to utter those same words that the last guy said already.

LOL! Chick type things. Reminds me of my obsession with Gilmore Girls a few months ago. I watched the repeats on ABC Family Channel. I liked it up to when Rory went off to college. The series just lost its charm at that point.
But yeah, my chick manga is probably my biggest mark of shame. I just like it a lot. That's all.

I try.
For the most part I get what's going on, but the meanings behind some actions, idioms, and heavy dialogue screw me up pretty bad. The JPN classes have helped a bit, though, in reading kanji. Most of the manga that's on my shelf is in Japanese; bought from time to time trips in Japan.
I used to subscribe to weekly jump via Fujiya Market around my place. Recently, though, I sold of them to the local comic book store. They guys ate it up and I walked out with a wad of cash.

I'm thinking about getting the Lone Wolf and Cub manga, is that any good?
I first read Lone Wolf and Cub back when Eclipse Comics published it in the late 80s/early 90s. After they went out of business, I was kind of mad that I wasn't able to read the rest of the story. I'm really glad that Dark Horse published the whole series in 28 volumes, though the digest size does make it a little bit harder to read. It does make it cheaper, though, I guess.
I waited until all 28 volumes were out and then sat down and read them over 5-6 days. It is well worth picking up. I'm waiting for a few more volumes of Samurai Executioner to be published before sitting down and reading all of those.
Viz/Eclipse published a lot of good manga back then. I wonder if anyone will ever pick up and complete Area 88.

I just started reading RahXephon and it isn't bad so far. I recently finished reading the latest volumes of Couple (manhwa really, not manga), Beet the Vandel Buster, Inu Yasha, Eyeshield 21, Video Girl Ai, Prince of Tennis, and Remote.
I've got about 120 manga volumes to read right now, but many of those are complete runs I haven't gotten around to starting yet - GTO, Gravitation, Firefighter Daigo, Girl Got Game, Rurouni Kenshin, Here Is Greenwood and Negima plus the last dozen volumes of Love Hina.
How many of you guys actually read manga in Japanese? Like seriously?
I'm still learning japanese, but I always download the raw japanese manga for naruto, bleach & FMA and give it a try in translating it, provided I can see and make out the furigana, although I typically get to a point where the furigana is too blurry for me to see and give up there, but I always go through and look for words i recognize.
So I'm not good enough yet to read it entirely in Japanese, but I do at least give it a try, LOL.

I got Beck Volume 1 today ^.^ haven't read it though. I'm waiting for tommorow.
Death Note is brilliant, by the way. It looked a bit...hmm to start but after reading a few chapters (60 ahem) it's my favourite manga...even though I don't really read manga anyway.
Also, the big thing that just happened...I don't think it really did happen. :watson:

It looks like Death Note will be coming out bimonthly with vol. 4 in March, vol. 5 in May and vol. 6 in July. I read the preview and didn't care for it, but I do like the fact that the frequency that volumes are being published seems to be increasing for many titles. With Rurouni Kenshin being monthly, it will finish up in July with volume 28.
I have the Viz Feb-July catalog and there are almost 70 volumes that I plan to order over that span. Fortunately, I can order them direct and save a bit. There will be a new Vagabond in June. Other Viz titles that I have been collecting include
Battle Angel Alita Last Order
Case Closed, Firefighter Daigo
Inuyasha
Ranma 1/2
Video Girl Ai (which ends in April)
Zatch Bell
Banana Fish
From Far Away
Happy Hustle High (which ends in March)
Here Is Greenwood
Red River
Beet the Vandel Buster
Dragon Ball Z (which ends in June)
Prince of Tennis
Whistle!
YuGiOh Duelist
Eyeshield 21
I"s
I am also planning to try the following titles
Golgo 13
R.O.D. Read or Die
Kaze Hikaru
Ultra Maniac
Black Cat
Monster
Tokyopop publishes a lot of manga, but I have found that Viz tends to publish manga that is more to my tastes. I like Psychic Academy, Rebound and Remote from Tokyopop, but that is about all currently. Of course, they did publish Planetes and Dot Hack which I enjoyed.

It's already gone 5 or so volumes past Ranma so I wouldn't mind it ending too. a lot of the volumes seem sort of the same. I wish she would do more One Pound Gospel.

I haven't read it, but Fruits Basket is very popular with a lot of my students who are 14-16. When I've glanced through a few volumes, I haven't noticed anything really objectionable for an 11 year old, but maybe somebody who has read them can answer that.

There are currently 11 volumes released for Project Arms. Volume 12 is scheduled for April 2006 and Volume 13 is scheduled for July 2006. There are 22 volumes total in the series, so if they release 4 per year the last volume will come out around October 2008.
Comic stores should be able to order the books and so should most book stores.

I got my February manga volumes from Viz today (10 books). Many of them were ones I've been collecting for a while, including Banana Fish 12, Rurouni Kenshin 23, Ranma 1/2 33 etc.
There were a couple of new titles that I decided to check out. I'd read Golgo 13 back in the 80s when a few issues were published. Golgo 13 vol. 1 is the start of a 'best of' collection and doesn't look too bad.
Monster #1 looks very good. I like the art and the story looks good too. The street date for both Golgo and Monster is 2/21/06 so they are worth keeping an eye out for.
I also picked up Kaze Hikaru because it sounded interesting. It takes place in about the same time period as Rurouni Kenshin. The art is good and I'll probably start collecting this title as well. There are too many good books out there and too little time to read, unfortunately.

Since I'm all caught up with my comic reading until my next shipment arrives, I started working on my manga volumes.
So far, I've gone through 8 volumes
Eyeshield 21 #6 - A decent football manga. Not as good as Prince of Tennis or Whistle, but entertaining enough.
Beet the Vandel Buster #8 - A good adventure manga where 'Vandel Busters' go around and destroy monsters called vandels, Very entertaining with good art.
Ranma 1/2 #33 - This was a good entry in this long running kung fu/comedy manga, but I'm ready for the series t oend in another 5 volumes.
Inu Yasha #24 - This adventure series seems to be dragging a bit, though this was a good installment. There are around 20 more volumes so far so it will be a while before there is a resolution to the story.
Mermaid Saga #1 and #2 - I have thes in comic form, but hadn't read them in 10 years or so. If you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you can become immortal, though most people die or become monsters. This series follows one man who became immortal centuries ago, but wishes to become mortal again. These volumes were good and I'll be picking up the last 2 volumes as well. Unlike Inu Yasha, Takahashi ended this series early.
Juror 13 - A done in 1 volume story that was pretty well done. an insurance investigator's life is falling apart and on top of that, he gets summoned to jury duty.
Golgo 13 #1 - I read a few Golgo comics 20+ years ago and enjoyed them. I was glad to see a 'best of' series being published by Viz and the 2 stories presented here were both pretty good.

The Genshiken anime is superior to the manga. It's almost 100% true to the original, but pulls off visual/audio gags the comic can't.
The full metal panic manga is about even with the show.

Sure thing buddy.
Genshiken is an all purpose club at a college in some city in japan (I forget). "The society for the study of modern visual culture".
Synopsis
The series is basically about one character, who starts attending college and living on his own. He's always been something of an otaku, but he's been in denial about it. He ends up browsing clubs during the school club fair, passes up the anime and manga club and decides to sit in on a Genshiken meeting. From there he starts embracing his otaku side, and comes to terms with it even buying doujinshi.
Why I think it's strong
It's very real. It's presented like a documentary in the show, a bit more than the manga does. All the characters are people you can, and probably have met before. It has a lot of dry and subtle humor, you as a european can probably appreciate.
It's hard to explain why I like the series so much, because just describing it makes it out to be very lame. There are a lot of little things that go into the show. The attention to otaku detail - the club daily reviews the previous day's episode of "Kujibiki Unbalance" (A fictional show they actually produced *for* Genshiken [there are OVA's out], to Kohsaka's guilty gear tournaments he plays, to the portrayal of anime conventions. It's just a very real depiction of Otaku's, the dialogue is witty and all the characters have real problems.
I guess to highlight one reason I enjoy the show is the Chairman Madarame. he says a lot of profound stuff over the course of the series.
I know that wasn't a few sentences but i'm very enthusiastic about the few things I like. :whoops:

I finally finished Love Hina. I started reading it a couple of years ago and got partway through the third volume before stopping. I started up again in March, reading an occasional volume until reading the last 8 volumes over the past 5 days. Overall, I think it is a pretty good series, though a bit repetitive at times. I did like the character growth and a few of the trips the characters took.
I'm reading Berserk, Bleach, Gantz, GTO, GUNMMAN last order, GITS man machine interface and mahou sensei negima, also Tenjou Tenge was cool, also cant finish Angel Sanctuary.

I'm catching up on reading Shonen Jump now. I was missing a couple of issues from 2005 and just picked them up, so I am now reading the last 15 issues. These mags are so thick that 15 issues amounts to around 4500 pages. I read all of the Hikaru No Go episodes first since that is my favorite Jump comic and I just finished the Naruto episodes which are also pretty good. I'll probably read the One Piece episodes next, followed by Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho and Yu Gi Oh. Reading through all of the episodes for one title takes me a little over 2 hours so I probably won't finish until tomorrow.

I became acquainted with the LW&C series from the films starring Wakayama Tomisaburo as Ogami Itto. I knew I had to get the Manga, but living over here Its hard to get English translations, and I don't like reading german translations.
About Lady Snowblood, I also became acquainted with it through the films starring Meiko Kaji as Oyuki, and as much as I like the series so far, I think its rather derivative of the Hibotan Bakuto film series. Oyuki is quite similar in alot of ways to Red Peony Oryu, except Oyuki has less purpose in life once her revenge is carried out. Oryu still has to rebuild her late father's Yakuza family after she avenges his death, where as with Oyuki its like "well, now what?". So while I enjoy Lady Snowblood, it is definately not Koike's best work by a longshot.

I finally finished GTO volume 25. I read the last six volumes over the last two days. When I first started the series, I wasn't sure how much I would like it. Onizuka drew me in with his crazy antics, though, and I ended up loving the series. I plan to pick up the 15 volume prequel series at some point and I may wait to read it until they are all released. I have volume one of the author's next series - Buso Renkin, but haven't started it yet.
I was also happy to learn recently that Lone Wolf and Cub has a sequel that Dark Horse is supposed to start publishing in English this fall. Also, I read an interview with Koike where he mentioned plans for a third Lone Wolf and Cub series eventually with Daigoro grown up as the lead character.

What titles have you tried? A lot of manga titles that are published in the U.S. first started coming out in the 90s in Japan and ended there, but are still being translated for US publication. Other titles such as Vagabond are published nearly simultaneously in the US now that they have caught up with Japan. For example, Case Closed has over 50 volumes in Japan and is still being published while they will only be up to volume 14 in the US by the end of the year. Inuyasha has around 45 volumes in Japan and only 27 here in the US as of October. Ranma 1/2 will be ending this fall when volume 36 is published.

Ranma 1/2 is almost done since volume 35 just came out. There's one more to go. Since it started being published here 15 years ago, it took quite some time to finish. Stopping the monthly comic and accelerating the paperbacks helped speed it up.
Rurouni Kenshin just ended at volume 28, but the same creator has a new series called Buso Renkin that is still running in Japan. Volume 1 just came out here in the US.
I like Naruto as well and it is still running in Japan, with 33 volumes released so far. Since it is being serialized in Shonen Jump, they are only up to volume 12 here in the U.S. It will be running for a loooong time at this pace.
Dragonball was very cool and, like Ranma 1/2, has been around for a long time. It just ended here and there are 42 volumes total between Dragonball and Dragonball Z.
YuYu Hakusho is complete in Japan with 19 volumes. Since volume 11 is coming out here later this year, it should be around for about 2-3 more years.
Sailor Moon has 18 volumes in 3 series and is complete.
Fullmetal Alchemist should be around for a while. It is still running in Japan and has 14 volumes out so far. Volumes 9 and 10 will be out later this year in the U.S. Production will probably slow a bit once they catch up with Japan.
It looks like D.N.Angel is being released just behind the Japanes releases. It is still being published in Japan and there are 11 volumes so far. Tokyopop is releasing volume 11 in the middle of September.
You do have a few books to look forward to. If you haven't read all of the earlier books in a series like Ranma and Dragonball, they should all be available to order from a book store, comic book store or online. I subscribe to Shonen Jump and like all of the titles in there. Hikaru No Go is my favorite, but I also enjoy Naruto, One Piece, Yu Gi Oh, Shaman King, and Yu Yu Hakusho.

I guess if we're warning people about shitty manga too:
I purchased Gunparade march and RAY on a whim. They blow big time. RAY seems too artificial, like "Hey, let's put a chick who has X-ray eyes into situations where her surgery skills allow her to beat the monster of the week"
And gunparade march, whereas the anime was pretty entertaining, the manga falls flat. School kids in mechs killing aliens. Some love triangles too. Blah blah.

I read the first volume of Gravitation last week and didn't care that much for it. I'd picked the series up a while ago because I thought it was about music and might be interesting. I didn't realize it was a shonen-ai (or yaoi) title and that part didn't interest me at all. I'll get most of my money back for the series on ebay, though, so it's fine.
There haven't been too many manga that I've tried and not liked - Blue Spring is one that comes to mind. I got bored with Oh My Goddess after a while and dropped it. Genshiken seems to be fairly popular, but I didn't find the first volume too engaging so I didn't pick up any more.

It had been a while since I read any manga, so I started to catch up a bit tonight. I read:
Claymore #4 - I've really been enjoying this series about half human/half monster warriors. This volume was part of a flashback story and was very good.
Eyeshield 21 #10 - This football series is kind of silly, but fun. The Vegas scenes were funny, even if allof the students are too young to gamble. I also thought it was funny that there were road signs in the U.S. which measured distances in kilometers.
Beet the Vandel Buster #10 - This monster hunting manga is heating up. This volume was one big battle, but was good.
Banana Fish #15 - I've really enjoyed this 1980s action series since I first started reading it many years ago in Pulp.
Red River #14 - Another good episode of this historical fantasy that takes place in the Hittite Empire. Not as good as recent volumes, but still very entertaining.
Onegai Teacher #1 - I didn't like this at first and thought the first third was kind of a jumble, but I stuck with it and it got better toward the end. Overall it was so-so. I'm hoping the second volume is better.

Onegai Twins - I thought the ending was a bit rushed, but overall the story was much better than the Onegai Teacher books.
Stray Little Devil #1 - I picked this up at the Dr. Master booth at Wizard World because it looked interesting. I liked it quite a bit and am going to look for volume 2, which came out in August.

Banana Fish #16 - I love this 80s action series. It is well written and I like the art. Only 3 more volumes to go and I'm sure they'll all be good.
Vagabond #22,23 - This adaptation of the classic samurai novel - Musashi - is very well done. Inoue took a break from the series after #20, but I'm glad he's back at it again. I wonder how far through the novel the series is. I've got the book, but haven't read it yet.

I read a few more books today:
Inuyasha #26,27 - These volumes were okay, but Inuyasha has had a feeling of sameness for me for a while now. They keep searching for Naruka and keep battling Naruka's minions. Here a shikon shard, there a shikon shard - etc.
Star Trek The Manga - It's been a while since any Star Trek comics were published. These weren't bad, though the art varied. The stories did capture sort of the feel of the original Star Trek tv show.
Steady Beat #2 - a Tokyopop OEL title that I like about a girl dealing with various family issues. I like the art and the story is good, too. Too bad it is only slated for 3 volumes.
Sokora Refugees #2 - another Tokyopop OEL title that I like, though not quite as much as Steady Beat. It is a fantasy series that started as a webcomic and deals with a girl who shares her body with a beautiful elf sorceress. She is transported (along with a few friends) via a portal to Sokora and is needed to help save the world.

I haven't read either one, but maybe someone else here has. Claymore might be worth a look if you haven't read it before.
I read through the first 15 books of HunterXHunter, and while the first few books really got me interesting, I lost all interest in the latest arc. Quite frankly, I feel the book dropped the ball when it had to rely on introducing new characters/worlds like they do with One Piece, because I think it stops the character development of the primary characters. Also, the writer/artist refuses to work with any assistants but rather work on his own- as a result, sometimes the artwork looks more like a storyboard or a series of sketches than what you can call a legitimate manga/comic book quality art.
I keep tabs on Vagabond and Berserk. Ever since Monster ended, I tried to keep up with 20th Century Boys as well, but that series is not that popular (read- less scans/translations available)

I read the latest volumes of Prince of Tennis (#16) and Whistle! (#14) from Viz. I still love Whistle!, a soccer manga, but I've lost interest in Prince of Tennis. The manga was fun for the first 8-10 volumes or so, but they've devolved into just having one tennis match per volume with various trick serves and hits highly improbable for junior high school students to be able to perform. The manga is kind of boring now and the main character, Ryoma, hardly appears in some volumes. In Whistle!, Shơ is front and center for most of the action or is at least usually participating when the focus falls on other characters.

I've got a few first volumes of various series that I wanted to try. If I like them, I'll pick up the rest of the series. I read a couple of them today.
La Corda d'Oro #1 - This takes place at a prestigious music school in Japan. A select music competition is about to take place and a general education student is given a magic violin and is selected for the contest. I enjoyed the first volume and thought the art and story were both good. This is apparently an adaptation of a video game. I plan to continue with the series.
The Law of Ueki #1 - This is about a boy who has the power to change trash into trees. I thought the story reminded me a bit of Zatch Bell and the art a little like Naruto. I didn't like the first volume, though, and don't plan to pick up any more. I thought it was boring and convoluted and the main character was not very interesting.

I continued reading a few more volume 1's of various series.
Buso Renkin #1 - This is by the creator of Rurouni Kenshin and is about a boy who becomes involved in the battle against evil alchemist monsters called homunculus. I thought the first volume was good. I didn't like it as much as Kenshin, but it took me a couple of volumes to really warm to Kenshin so I'll definitely stick with it.
The Drifting Classroom #1 - This is a horror manga from the mid70s about a Japanese school that is somehow transported to a desolate world during an earthquake. I thought it was entertaining, though some of the character reactions seemed a bit over the top. Maybe if this title is successful, we'll see other older classic titles published.
Yakitate!! Japan #1 - This manga is about a boy who wants to create Ja-Pan, a bread that Japanese people will like more than rice. He has created 55 versions of Ja-Pan in his search and has a lot of baking talent. He goes to Tokyo and tries to get a job at a renowned bread factory/store. This was my favorite of the three books I read. The main character is very upbeat, if a bit naive. A very entertaining baking manga.

More first volumes
Punch! #1 - This is by the creator of Happy Hustle High and is about a girl whose grandfather was a famous boxer and now runs a boxing club. She is engaged (against her will) to a childhood friend who is one of the boxers in the gym. I enjoyed the first volume and the mix of comedy and drama. I'll be back for more.
Emma #1 - This manga is about a maid in Victorian England who is shy, but has many suitors, even amongst the nobles. This period piece is well executed with excellent art and an interesting story. A very good start to the series.
Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service #1 - There are four stories in this first volume about a group of Buddhist college student misfits who band together to deliver corpses to wherever they want to go after death, as long as they can pay. One character has the ability to find corpses, another is an embalmer and a third (the main character) can talk to the souls of corpses he touches to find out what they want. The first story was the least interesting, but they got better after that. The art is good and the stories seem to be improving.

SDK is awesome! I highly recommend the manga (dont know about the anime though) ^_^
I'm on to Death Note Vol. 4, so far I like it.

I've read the first two volumes of Death Note and liked it. I have up to volume 8 and will get to them eventually.
Continuing the catch up process:
Suzuka #1 - I see this as a cross between Love Hina and Maison Ikkoku with a bit more nudity. A 15 year old boy moves in with his aunt, who runs a girls only apartment complex/spa. There are a few assorted wild characters plus the girl next door who is a star athlete. I liked the first volume and will be back for more.
Earthlight #1 - An OEL title that take place at a colony on the moon. Damon just moved there with his parents. His dad is the new colony administrator and his mom is the new teacher. He just wants to fit in and make friends. The first volume had a pretty good story and ends on a cliffhanger. I liked it and am ready for the next book.
Kaze Hikaru #3 - This is set in 1863, a little earlier than Rurouni Kenshin and deals with people on the other side of the battle. Kamiya is a girl disguising herself as a boy so that she can join the Mibu-Roshi, a group of samurai loyal to the Shogunate. She joins in hopes of avenging her murdered family. I like this series a lot and am glad that it was pulled out of Shojo Beat so that the release schedule can be accelerated a bit.

I read Remote #8-10 which are the last 3 volumes in this detective/mystery series. Inspector Himura is a brilliant detective, but hasn't left his basement headquarters since a tragedy a year earlier. Kurumi is a police officer recruited to be Himura's eyes and ears on the scene. She is new to detective work, but works hard. I've enjoyed this series since the beginning and am sorry to see it end. The only thing I didn't like about the series was that some stories would be complete in one volume and others would be continued in the next volume. The mysteries were generally interesting and Kurumi grew as a character throughout the series. The ending of the series did leave room for more should they decide to create a sequel.

The Kindiachi Files #14 - The Gentleman Thief - I hadn't read any volumes in this mystery series before, but this volume looked interesting. Kindiachi is a high school detective and in this volume is dealing with an art thief who is becoming violent as well as stealing art. I enjoyed it and plan on checking out the earlier volumes as well. At nearly 300 pages, it was a pretty good bargain for the money.
Yakitate!! JaPan #2 - I liked this volume quite a bit and am glad that there are over 20 volumes still to come in this baking manga. This volume features a bread competition as well as several more types of bread. Doesn't sound all that great, but it is a lot of fun.
Drifting Classroom #2 - I liked this volume more than the first volume. The kids seem more rational than the adults and they find out a little more about what happened to their school after it disappeared during an earthquake. Adults and kids both die violently, so this manga probably isn't for everyone.

Can you get to a local library near your house or school? Some of my libraries have a good selection, but they are usually willing to order what they don't have from other libraries in the system, as long as you have a library card.

I do have a library, that I think does carry manga. I bet all the good stuff is taken though =/ 'Cuz a lot of Vietnamese kids like manga xD even the not-so-nerdy/Wapanese ones.
I might get a job this Summer, Masa, but right now I'm focusing on grades.
Edit: Also.. any reccomendations? Preferably short ones? >_>; If that's possible. I need to get more Peacemaker Kurogane. I've had the first two volumes for over a year, and I just read them last night, because I forgot about them. 'Twas pretty good.

At libraries, you can usually put holds on books. If someone else has them checked out, your name goes on a waiting list and you get the book when it comes back in, unless someone got on the list ahead of you. Libraries often belong to groups of libraries that share material, so you might have more than 1 library to draw upon. You can even look at the catalog and put hold on books online.
I read a few more books today:
Golgo 13 #4-5 - This series about the world's greatest assassin features stories selected from the last 35 years. Some of the stories barely have Golgo 13 in them at all. I liked the stories about sending Golgo into space and about the reunification of Germany, but the other two were only okay. One of them was about the death of Princess Di and the other was about a mafia family.
50 Rules for Teenagers #1 - This is a manhwa about a 15 year old girl whose life consists mostly of homework and looking after her family. She has an older sister who is a manga artist who procrastinates and needs help meeting deadlines, a mother who is never home, a twin brother who is best at doing nothing, and a younger brother that needs looking after. I thought the first volume was funny and I'd like to read more, but this is an ADV title so who knows. A second volume supposedly came out in February, but may not have.

Well it's good that you have your priorities straightened out. :watson:
Still, if you can find a good 10-15 hours of work per week job, that'd be ideal.
20 hours can be a little much for a high school student, not because it's a lot of work (cause it isn't, trust me), it's just that it leaves little time to actually study and do what high school teens do best, which is shoot the shit and have fun (or read manga/watch anime, in order to keep it related to the topic)
Thinking of watching death note. What EXACTLY is it about?? People keep turning me off to watching it because everyone goes, "...Just watch it." They have to be complete douches about it and can't just tell me, but everyone says it's THAT good.

I've read the manga and I assume the anime is just an adaptation of it. This really smart kid (Light Yagami) is kind of bored with school and life, etc., when one day he finds this notebook lying on the ground. It turns out that it was dropped by one of the gods of death and that if he writes somebody's name in the book, they will die. If he writes in the time and manner of death, that will come true as well. He experiments a bit and decides to get rid of criminals around the world. Interpol soon takes notice of this and tries to track him down. Then things start to get out of hand. The god of death who dropped the notebook visits him during this whole time to observe what he does with it, but Light is the only one who can see him.
The manga is pretty good, but some of the things Light does can get a bit sick.

Eden: It's an Endless World Vol. 3-4 - This series takes place in the future after a virus has killed about 15% of the population and mutilated many more. The Propater is an organization that controls much of the world. They are opposed by a mercenary organization called NOMAD. Volume 3 features one long battle while volume 4 deals with some of the aftereffects along with a long flashback into one of the character's origins. The first volume was a lot different than those that follow, but I like this series. It reminds me a bit of Akira.
Musashi #9 Vol. 3 - Musashi is a teenager and one of nine agents for Ultimate Blue with the power to change the world. Musashi's current assignment is to protect Tachibana. I was kind of on the fence with the first two volumes of this series, but I am enjoying it more as it goes along. This volume was pretty good so I'll keep reading the series.

I was wondering, is the manga 666 Satan any good? I noticed it was recently licensed by VIZ, under a new title called "O-Parts Hunter" and I might consider checking it out. According to a review on AnimeOnDVD (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/manga/manga.php?manga_view=2482), it's pretty much uncensored, aside from the title. Is this an easy recommendation?
There's still a couple other comics I still have to look into. I'm not going to pick up HunterXHunter just yet, but I'm really considering the Akira comic. I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I hear, it was great (and I would really like to see it). Should I consider picking up this comic as well?

Akira costs about twenty to twenty-five bucks per volume, and I'm pretty sure there's six in all. Only buy them if you have enough to get 'em all within a pretty close amount of time. XD

I went and checked the prices on Amazon ... crap...
So, yeah, maybe I'll just go with the movie then... Cripes, I didn't think a graphic novel could cost so much. I'm actually surprised... Actually nix that, I almost forgot about Absolute Sandman's price.

Buy.com has all but volume 2 of Akira in stock right now for prices ranging from $14.82 to $17.79. You could buy all 5 books for around $80. That's about 40% off the cover price. They also have a thing going on where if you use the Google Checkout feature, you can get $10 off on a $30 order or $20 off on a $50 order and they also give free shipping. That would bring your total price down to around $60 for the five books. Of course, you'd still need to pick up volume 2.
An ebay auction might be a possibility as well. Somebody is bound to list the trades as a set at some point.

I just finished reading Black Cat #2-4 and I thought they were very entertaining. The story revolves around Train Heartnet (the Black Cat) who is a former assassin. He now makes his living as a sweeper (bounty hunter) along with his partner Sven Vollfied and sometimes accomplices Rinslet Walker (a professional thief) and Eve (a genetically altered young girl). I like the various powers shown by the various characters plus the evolution Eve seems to be undertaking. This series has been a lot of fun so far and I'm looking forward to more.

I had today off, so I managed to get through a half dozen volumes.
Pastel #2-4 - I'm enjoying this series quite a bit, though the artist seems to have some difficulty differentiating between the female characters. They all tend to look alike. This series is about a boy who pretty much lives on his own since his father is never home and his mother is dead. Two very cute sisters end up living with him and hijinx ensue. He's attracted to the older sister and viceversa, but they have trouble expressing their feelings. It is sort of similar to Suzuka (though less graphic) and Love Hina.
Ghost Hunt #3-5 - I didn't really care for the first volume of this series, but I liked the second book and it seems to be hitting its stride now. These three volumes were all pretty good. Mai becomes involved with Naru, who is 17 years old and runs a paranormal investigators agency. She becomes his administrative assistant as they seek to help people who are bothered by ghosts and other entities. He has a number of other people who help, including a priest, an ex-monk, a psychic and others. Naru reminds me a bit of Inspector Himuro from Remote.

I read Nodame Cantabile #1-6 today. This is about a young musician named Chiaki who is a very talented violinist and piano player, but he wants to be a conductor. He is a little bit bored and self absorbed at his school until he runs into Nodame, a very talented, but undisciplined piano player who is also an incredible slob. She lives next door to Chiaki and attaches herself to him, dragging him into being more sociable. I was initially attracted to this series because I grew up listening to classical music. My mom is a violin and piano player and also was a conductor for many years. I think this series is very well done and I am looking forward to reading future volumes as they are released. I loaned the first volume to my mom to see if she enjoys it as well.

I spent this week reading all 9 volumes of Here Is Greenwood. Kazuya Hasukawa decides to go away to Ryokuto Academy and live in the dorms after his older brother marries the girl he loves. Hasukawa ends up in the hospital after a car accident and moves into the dorms a month late. He ends up as a frequent target for jokes by the Student Body president and head dorm resident who happen to live next door to him. To make matters worse, Hasukawa's older brother is the school nurse. I really liked this series and how Hasukawa grows throughout. You also learn a lot about the supporting cast. The supporting cast is full of odd, but fun characters. I think the series could have lasted quite a bit longer than the 9 volumes. It was very amusing and entertaining.

I just read the first three volumes of The Kindaichi Case Files
The Opera House Murders where a class trip to prepare for performing the Phantom of the Opera turns deadly.
The Mummy's Curse where a visit to a friend's home for a wedding finds a number of people being murdered by the 7th Mummy.
Death TV where a show similar to Punk'd that pulls pranks on celebrities comes across a couple of murders during a snowstorm.
I liked all 3 volumes and now plan on picking up and reading the rest of the books. I hope Tokyopop picks up the pace on the rest of the series, though, since they are only halfway through it.

I read through volumes 3-11 of Psychic Academy over the last couple of days. I tried the first two volumes during the summer and liked what I read. I decided to wait until I had the other 9 volumes before reading the rest. I thought this series was a lot of fun and got better as it went along. sure, there was tons of fan service in the nude/almost nude shots of Mew and Orina, but the story was pretty good. The ending of the story was also very appropriate.
The series takes place in the near future, a little over 20 years since people started manifesting "aura" powers. Normal people generally look on the people with aura powers with some caution. The ADC is an organization trying to understand the aura powers and discover the ability to harness these abilities for their own ends. They are the main foil in the series to the students at the Psychic Academy in Japan, where students with aaura powers attend high school.

I read Dramacon vol. 2 tonight and liked it quite a bit. This volume takes place a year after volume 1. Each book takes place at an anime/manga convention and is a book with comedy, drama, and romance. Lots of fun. Too bad there are only 3 volumes scheduled, but maybe the creator will come up with another entertaining book after this one ends.
Today my sister called me from the bookstore to ask me what manga my brother would like because she was getting him 2 for Christmas. She was going to get him the first 2 volumes of One Piece (that was on his list), but the first was only there. So she called me and asked what else he'd like.
I told her to get .hack//Legend of the Twilight. It was the only manga I could remember that he hasn't read yet. :P I had read the fist book of the series a while ago and thought it was pretty good.
But would that series be good for a 12-year-old boy? We have different tastes in things like that sometimes. =/ Has anybody read the series?

I liked the .Hack series. It is a pretty short series at only 3 volumes. I think it would be appropriate for a 12 year old boy, but whether he likes it or not depends on his taste in comics.
Other series that might be good are Whistle! (soccer), Hikaru No Go (about the game go), Naruto (ninjas), Beet the Vandel Buster (monster fighting), Rebound (basketball), and Rurouni Kenshin (samurai). Of course, he may have already read each of these, especially since 2 of them are in Shonen Jump.

Banana Fish #17 - only two more volumes to go. This one was very good with lots of action.
Claymore #5 - The conclusion of Clare's origin was very good. You're getting to learn a little more about the organization as well. I'm enjoying this book a lot.
Eyeshield 21 #11 - We are finally up to the start of the fall season. This volume was okay, but I liked the last couple of volumes more.
Samurai Deeper Kyo #4-5 - Not as good as volume 3, but not too bad.

I'm back to reading the Kindaichi Case Files
#6 The Legend of Lake Hiren - Kindaichi and Miyuki end up at a new secluded resort when news comes that a serial killer has escaped from prison. The killer disfigures the faces of his victims with an axe and dresses like Jason from the Friday the 13th movies. Kindaichi has to solve the case when people start dying at the resort.
#7 The Santa Slayings - Kindaichi is invited to a Mystery Night play at an old hotel where an acting group will put on a murder mystery. "The Red Haired Santa Claus" is a mysterious figure who has threatened the group and Kindaichi has to solve the case when several people are actually murdered.
#8 No Noose Is Good Noose - Kindaichi and Miyuki enroll at a cram school to boost their grades and try to get a better chance for admission to college. Unfortunately, the school's nickname is "Hanging High" for all of the students who commit suicide due to the pressure. Somebody has started vandalizing the school by spraying chicken blood over test papers and leaving threatening messages. Kindaichi tries to solve the case.
I enjoy this series quite a bit. The mysteries are interesting and the characters are entertaining.
