Question.. Why does Tokyo Tower have a bow(?) or as i like to think, a frowny face, on it? I figured someone here might know. :D
This picture was taken mid March of this year if that helps.

Because God hates you.

For crissakes, what kind of question is that? It's a digital display, a bow is a perfectly reasonable thing to put on a digital display. It's cute. It's romantic. Who cares?

Is this some kind of Rorschach test?

THe first thing that came in my mind: It's a butterfly!!!! :D

God hating me notwithstanding as i'm well aware of that fact, my sweet jackass PLF :D

I ask for two reasons since you were wondering...

1) Bows as of late tend to stand for things, i.e., Breast cancer(pink), AIDS (red), lance armstrong or troops overseas (yellow).

2) I've seen pics of Tokyo Tower without it, leading me to think perhaps it was something special that had meaning (see reason 1)

But thanks for the input :p

US, US, and US. Tokyo Tower? Japan.

Bows also get put on presents, wrapped gifts, and tend to be tied with shoelaces.

And yes, perhaps it has meaning. Perhaps the guy spitting on the sidewalk also has a profound reason for doing so. Chances are he's just doing it to spit. Same with the bow. But, y'know, maybe I should make inane threads on OP9 every day for each silly thing I see that may have a meaning beyond design, aesthetics, or whatever.

Inane is it now? my my who spit in your cheerios this morning sweetie?

But since you see fit to keep replying i guess its not so bad now is it? Now you could start up new threads about every little thing you see, especially since you're in japan and all us lonely otaku back stateside live to such japanese oddities that in your infinte kindness you could bestow upon us. Might help liven up the place to h2orowe's liking..

Besides the AIDS ribbons tend to be world wide.. y'know as in WORLD Aids Day.. but i guess the whole japanese tendency to ignore problems might have gotten to your brain so you've probably forgotten about things of this nature. :D

And i agree Xenotrauma, that is how we roll 'round these parts. I do think PLF just likes to argue and i dont mind being an annoying little voice of logic to bug him to death :p

PLF has been pissy/moody lately. Even more so than usual.

While PLF is a little harsh....I do think you're over-assuming about AIDS, breast cancer, etc. part. Japan isn't really a giving country... if you know what I mean.

Take example of the Niigata earthquake. Japan's biggest rice-growing town in shambles, and only so many nearby prefectures helped out. Only so many schools volunteered to help.

A bow is just a nice bow.

===

By the way, on the topic of Tokyo Tower...
Have anyone ever went to its website? I saw on Japanese TV one time that the Tokyo Tower's mascots, older Noppon (they're twins), has a strange way of talking like an old man, even though he claims to be ten.

Just some useless info. ^_^

I have no idea what that pink bow was for. It might be easier to guess if we knew the date they did it.. I mean, they can show different things in that spot, so for all I know it was there on hina no matsuri.

The bow is a traditional part of Japanese Culture. When meeting someone for the first time, it is considered quite rude to not bow after introducting yourself, and also as you say goodnight for the evening.

Looks more like a cat or an angry daruma than a bow to me. But considering that Tokyo Tower is a popular date spot, and how obsessed the Japanese youth are with romance and couples, a bow makes more sense.

lol@chin's pun

I have to admit, I saw the bow first. But now all I can see is the frowny face, and it cracks me up.

oh! That could have some truth in it... if you MUST find the meaning of the bow.

In Japanese culture, they say true love is tied by a red string. Maybe that bow signifies that tie. Afterall, it IS March, and the biggest event for lovers in Marsh is White Day.

It has no meaning. The bow was probably put up because it was Christmas/sappy romantic holiday. No AIDS, no breast cancer support, no nothing. AIDS isn't a big deal (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/national/archive/news/2005/12/11/20051210p2a00m0na027000c.html) in Japan because only foreigners carry it.

So as long as we don't have sex with foreigners in Japan, we should be okay?
Sweet.

Hehe, yeah they are so full of it. Japan is like one of the only G7 nations that has AIDS on the rise isn't it? Ignoring things makes them go away, right?

But, 羽の助 is right I think, I go for the sappy argument. :D

Hm, I've heard that quite often, lately.
Of course, AIDS being on the rise is a terrible thing. But saying that Japan is the only G7 country where this happens makes it sound even worse and gives the impression of them being more ignorant or careless then the rest of the "civilized" world. There is at least one more G7 country where this happens: Germany. It's not a thing that can only happen in Japan.

Well i didnt mean for this to turn into the AIDS in japan thread, but hey carry on. its less "inane" than finding meaning in the bow right? :p

Well that sounds like an answer to me.. you know if one MUST find meaning in giant bows on landmarks that dont usually have them..

Dunno why that was so hard to just say.. but thanks, i didnt know about White Day. :)

Well, if you're a girl, you don't really need to. It's a day you could be pleasantly surprised with gifts... from a guy

better question, why does it always gets destroyed in some anime or movie? Its like the first thing to go when something is happening out of control.

And that looks like frown to me, if you didn't say it bow, i would've never guessed.

Tokyo tower having another bad day?
