Btw, the show is on TLC right now.

I love this show so so so much and I'do a hell of alot to be on it. $5,000 in free clothes, haircut from a freaking GENIUS, and great makeup!? Where do I sign up?!

Unfortunately, I do have style and have picked up even more from this show, so I know I'm no canidate. However, now the show comes to you!

The only thing I watch on TV is 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' & sometimes the stock market news. Everything else is just a waste of time. & yes, 'What Not To Wear' is a crappy show too.

I like how you say "coming to a town near you", despite the fact none of those towns are even in the same state as me.

Unless the contiguous forty-eight states were all condensed into about ten mega states without my knowledge.

Uh, don't be bitter baby.

I'm sure if you really want to go you can make it happen.
I was suprised as hell that Atl was on this list. It rarely ever is.

Yes, it is.
Yes, it is.
Please believe me, yes it is.

You learn how to makeover your house on a tight budget (as long as you know a carpenter and someone who can use a sowing machine) and you learn what looks best on you and how fashion isn't all about the scene but what makes YOU look good. education of self.

I wish I could send ppl I know to a "What Not To Wear" camp.

Well, to be honest, they did it first and they do it best.

I don't watch any other make-over shows.

But anyway, stop the hate ppl! Give it a chance! :p

Style changes too much. If celebirties started getting mulits then you can bet your marbles it's going to come back in style.

Their should be a show on hygiene because the thing is: alot of people stink, and no one ever tells them.

Ookkaaaaay. Chill out.

Come up with a phrase just as catchy and more specific then.

All slovenly dress should be regulated to the home. Besides, $5,000 free for clothes, shoes, accessories? Too awesome.

One guy they had on went to Old Navy and bought 100 pairs of underwear and socks.

That's very not true. They still have documentaries on people, history, things about animals, everything. They varied their programming and these just happen to be most popular.

Didn't anyone see "The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off"? Or "Wild Child: The Story of Feral Children"? How about "Archie, The 84-lb Baby"?

No?

I did. They have alot more that just makeover shows. What's with the hate anyway? :p

I have to agree that TLC is out of control. I remember watching surgeries and stuff like that, and now it's like I'm watching a clone of the Home and Garden network. I don't care how to make my living room paint match my drapes, couch, and couch. I don't care about what colors are for spring and which ones are for fall. Same thing goes for you DISCOVERY. I don't care about Orange County Choppers, or how you can make my Honda into a rolling donut maker.

They spend copius levels of money to make you look more fashionable. What's new?
I prefer the local people who do the stuff out of Thrift stores. My younger sister is going to try and make her own clothing line for a class project in fashion design; the class and the teacher (who used to do a line calle "Monkey Wench) were getting some good publicity here. In the end I hope that she'll teach me how to alter my own stuff.

TV seems to try and sound educational with these shows, but it really feels a little more like bull. MTV's "Pimp My Ride", the above mentioned Choppers and this whole makeover fiasco is...blegh. I could spend 5k on better stuff, or invest it with the power of exponential growth.

Well they aren't coming to my town, or near it.

You mean that stupid show where two women take it upon themselves to change the entire wardrobe of a person who was picked by their friend, and may not actually WANT their wardrobe fucked with, is going to the US?

Run for the hills. Run for the fucking hills.

StormShadow
08-20-2005, 04:38 PM
God, totally didn't think about that aspect. It must be just like getting a new girlfriend. You know, where after the courting period it sudenly comes out that she hates all your stuff, and then while your at work has all removed, just so that when you return you find your GI Joe Movie gone, the moose head you had above the fireplace gone, your miller light sign on the wall gone, and all your self respect and feelings of masculinity gone as well

Jay
08-20-2005, 04:43 PM

The American version is much better. It's a man and woman and they're funny as hell. They've had one person say 'no' before. They don't hold them hostage

What's with the hate? It's actually a good show.
akitaka I'm sure if you talked to your sister she'd agree that color, cut, patter, and coordination (not matching) are important aspects of fashion.

WNTW has been on longer than any of the other make-over shows. They actually have a process and explain why this might be better than that. And it's not like they turn the person into some zombie that looks like everyone else. The person retains their own style just in better cut clothing.

if you have time to worry about fashion past matching colors and just looking decent, you need more hobbies in your life.

What if you're a fashion designer? Then what?

Besdies, you don't 'match' you 'coordinate'.

Yikes, everyone is hating on Roxie here. Well I guess I'll be the first to say that What Not to Wear is indeed a good show. I assume that most of you haven't given the show a try before insulting it, so I'll give you the gist of it. The people who are getting the makeovers are not vapid morons. They have interesting personalities and I'm sure there are people on there you could even identify with. Unfortunately, how one looks has a huge role in how they are percieved by others. This show teaches people how to find clothes that compliment their body, unlike other messages in the media that encourage people to strive for an unattainable body image. You'd think something so trivial such as clothing wouldn't make a difference, but it really does. If people know how to work with what they've got, then they'll increase their self-confidence and perhaps worry less on what they look like and more on more important things.

I do agree that TLC and even the Discovery Channel are saturated with renovation, make-over, surgery and car shows. But I guess that's just the fashion now since all of TV is overrun with boring reality shows.

akitaka
08-20-2005, 09:45 PM
I didn't know I was; I just pointed out that having to spend wads of cash to look decent is kind of pointless. Key points being wads of cash. My younger sister has my thrift trait as well; she feels guilty when relatives send her nice jeans that costed over $100. Just a few days back I got this really nice sleeveless and I don't even want to guess the pricetag; I usually go for slimish office shirts at the nextdoor Goodwill for only 2 dollars.

I'll give an upshot to the show, though; it doesn't tell you that you have to dress like "so and so" star to look decent. Some of the suggestions are a good booster of esteem, since a lot of them point to simple messages, such as not trying to look slim, when you could look better with something a little more relaxed. As stated before, it's personal coordination.

I don't think it's anything too special, though.

TygressVirgo

I like the show, and it does have its valid points. However, when it comes to spending money, it is a personal choice of what is most important to you. I fly back and forth between Guam and the mainland every year. It's not a chaep flight by any standards, but it is important for me spiritualy and mentally to go back at least once a year. I could spend the money that I have on other things, but it comes down to what is important to you. For some clothes are not important, but for others they can be used as a confidence booster. All and all, spend your money on something that is important to you.

Sidenote: Stacy and Clinton are so flippin funny.

I've never watch the show, yet I'd actually go except:
1) I'd have to get a ride from my mom or a friend who can dirve to Woodfied, since I doubt any of my friends would go I'd have to go with my mom which would be embarassing
2) I'd probably go there wih my entire wardrobe consistingo f stuff from Hot Topic, and I hve a feeling I'd be deemed hopeless by them upno sight.

That's even worse. Instead of some "clubbin'" fashion, it's even more bullshit fashion. All those designer labels just to make people look all the same. And whenever I have to wear them, I feel so naked. Even moreso than actually being naked.

In case you haven't already noticed, I think society was flushed down the shitter years ago, and I hate almost everybody. If 99% of the world got nuked tomorrow, I'd think it would be an improvement.

You might as well kill yourself and save your own ass, then, if you truthfully feel this way. There's no contribution to simply stating that "the world is hopeless becuase of soandso species", and besides, it's off topic.
We've already acknowledged so far that the show has its own problems and solutions, so there's no use for you to march along with a puffed up chest telling us that it's "phony", when we could just as easily rebute by stating that your inane level of pessimism is just as useless. Come on, man; it's the internet.

I mean, we're using computers and the internet as entertainment as you are, when we could be constructive and work right now. Is this not bullshit enough for you?

Yeah, it used to be all about the Hermaphrodites on The Learning Channel (hence the reason my college buddies refer to them now as "Learning Channel Specials".) Actually, I kind of like the move away from scientific porn to mindless makeover and home improvement shows.

I've never seen the British one, but I have seen the hosts on Oprah once. Both hosts went to this one woman whose pants were "unfit" for her with two small little holes in the back, and they RIPPED the woman's jeans apart. In public. Do they really harass people like that in the real show?

Shamu
08-23-2005, 12:49 AM
I'm with Roxie! I love the show! I don't always agree with their methods, but I think it gets the point across. That and the hosts really are funny (the American hosts at least)! Also, if you think about it, fashion has been important throughout history. It's not just now that it's a big deal, it ALWAYS has been. It can define who you are and it's fine if you don't like to be in with the latest styles, but society (and therefore the law) dictates that we all must be clothed, so why not at least look good or be comfortable? I know when a girl wears the right shoes, with the right skirt, the right shirt, heck even the right underwear, it can make her feel incredibly sexy, beautiful and confindent. I see nothing wrong with feeling like that.

Chinamerican

Yes! Go Roxie and Shamu!

I love that show and I have the book (British ladies I guess). I'm not extremely fashion conscious but spending more than normal amounts of time in front of a mirror (dance + kung fu), one starts to realise what looks good and what doesn't.

The book is actually a really good guide b/c it tells you what cuts, hems, collars, shoes, accessories, etc. go well w/ a less than perfect body part and they explain why. There's also a part at the end that lists designers and stores by budget so you don't have to blow your cash on one piece so it's about smart consumerism, not crass consumerism. One of the tenets of the book is actually not to follow fashion trends religiously b/c they're not tailored to fit everyone. Go with what works, not with the flavour of the week.

I for one think that all girls going into puberty should have one semester dedicated to studying the "what to wear" show as a required PE course. When you look good, you feel good. And it'll probably put an end to some of the gawd awful fashions some kids try to pull off.
