When I was a child there were two bits of advice I struggled with - 'You Shouldn't Take This Personally' and 'Try To Put This Behind You'. But what I needed to know was "How? – how do I do that? How can I move on and not feel devastated?" I should have said: "That's great advice, thank you, but how exactly do I do that – I'd love to be able to (or I'd die to be able to, was what I often thought) – so please show me."
You just... do, I guess. You sit there feeling miserable for a period of days or weeks and all of a sudden it doesn't feel as painful.

I think what that advise is saying is actually "dont let it effect you." If something happens to you don't let it ruin your day. Carry on an live your live regardless. It's not telling you to stop feeling, or to feel less, but to carry on.

You shouldn't take this personally.
Try to put it behind you.
Note that both should and try are not equivalent to a command or success respectfully. You shouldn't take it personally. That's common sense. It doesn't make it easy to do, or mean that you won't, it just means that ideally you should try not to take it personally. And it's not that you will have no trouble putting it behind you, just that you should try to put it behind you. Because worrying about it constantly won't help.
