The Justice Ministry said Friday it will tighten standards for granting long-term resident status to foreigners of Japanese descent in the wake of the murder last month of a 7-year-old girl in Hiroshima, allegedly by a Peruvian man who may have Japanese ancestry.

Actually, it seems like a fairly reasonable step, they just plan to certify that the people applying for long-term residence as foreigners of Japanese descent don't have a criminal record in their own country. I had to do that to get a student visa. :P
By the way, the rumor around campus today was that a junior high teacher was having an argument with a student and decided to end it by stabbing her to death. Only time and the news will tell.
