View Full Version : Official Plural of Kancho.

After a long and heated debate on the outpost nine IRC channel, we figured out that Kancho is now pretty much an English word. Therefore, we needed a plural. I proposed it to be "Kanchoes", and I, obviously, won. Therefore, the official plural of "kancho" is now officially "kanchoes" rather than "kancho's".

kan-cho Pronunciation Key (I'm not sure, really.)
n. pl. kan-choes

Besides, the ('s) denotes ownership, "kancho's" wouldn't make sense anyways.

I only pointed out what other /native English speakers/ thought the plural should've been.

Maybe the world needs a non native English speaking English teacher. Here I come.

I don't think it needs a plural at all. People get by okay saying "how many kimono were there?" (if they have any sense)... If you know what kancho is, you should at least know that there aren't plural nouns in Japanese.

I tried to tell him that in IRC, but he wouldn't listen!

English words mostly need a plural.

"Praetorian kancho everybody in the room."

doesn't sound quite as good as

"Praetorian kanchoes everybody in the room."

If you disagree with me, you are wrong.

Praetorian kanchoes everybody in the room.....

damn, yeah. That does sound pretty good.
A demonstration, if you would be so kind?

I was talking about the noun form of it, not the verb form that you used in your example.

he's talking about himself. and how could Kanchoes win...it's like....obvouis? If i got to create a new word I'd want the plural form to be something unique.

Well, those two are automatically not good enough, since it's not me that thought them up. Therefore, as a rule, they'll not suffice in the cold, hard world that is literacy.

Haha, I used to make up so many words when I was like 10 and such..... I'd really use like almost all of them.... I probably made up around 30 words, and I remember like one. Moob. I forgot what it was but when I was like 10 or 9 I said it "Milky Boob" for when a girls nipples are hard.

Kiljou

Well, the plural of kancho is still kancho, no matter what anyone says. It is still a Japanese word, even if it is used in English sentences. Thus, "kanchoes" is a made up word. It can be inferred that this thread is about made-up words. We are simply going along with the topic.

Praetorian
08-18-2005, 09:01 PM
A word borrowed from a foreign culture can still have plurals acceptable to the language it was adopted in. For example; Zero. Yet there's such a thing as "zeroes" or "zeros".

Kiljou
08-18-2005, 09:05 PM
That's different. Japan has no plurals at all, while Arabic, which is where zero came from, does. There is a system of grammar that can allow us to figure out what the plural of zero would be. Japan has no such thing.

Neologisms are all well and good, but cementing the act in their use can only propagate and lend credence to the act itself.

Given that, I'd have to say that
Noun: Kancho
Present tense adjective: Kancheeses
Past tense adjective: KanchOWNED.

Praetorian
08-18-2005, 09:10 PM
Like I said before. "Praetorian kancho the room" just doesn't sound good. It *needs* a plural in that case.

Rather, I, and anyone who has a basic grasp of Japanese grammar, would say this:

Noun: Kancho
Verb: Kancho
Present tense adjective: Kancho
Past tense adjective: Kancho

That isn't the point, Praetorian. It's a Japanese word, and if you will say it at all, say it in the proper context. Or say it in Japanese.

No. It just doesn't sound good.

Henjin

It makes sense to stick w/ the Japanese in noun form. (one kancho, many kancho), but you have to add something to it in certain verb forms. It's not really 'plurality,' but I forgot the actual grammatical term for that kind of verb. (i.e. the form in "He kanchos a lot")

Kiljou
08-18-2005, 09:19 PM
Argh! "Kancho" simply isn't meant to be used in an English sentence. It was devised with compatibility in mind. Any English word with the letter K is unintelligible in French, as they do not use that letter.

I guess I have to blame Az for this. It's like how Sayonara is said completely wrong by the American public. Kancho simply isn't meant to be used in the English language.

Pah. That's naught of fun when one deals with such a word given the English rules of grammar. Leads to far too many ambiguities.

English is a hungry language. It eats up, bastardises, Anglicises and neologisises words from other cultures every minute. It allows for immense personal freedom, poetic license, humour and punnery, spoonerisms etc.

Let the poor girl have her plurals :)

Then how do you propose we name our English version of Kancho?

You know, assuming the western world's youth suddenly catches the kancho fever.

Isn't English great for making up words? From gimongous to sminy. From "I'm going to grab some foodage" to "Look at those gazonkas!" Anything you can imagine can be assigned a silly sounding word, often by sticking two other words together.

In fact, I just made up a word for the process of making up words. Wordation. I like that. "I looked at her and suddenly wordated 'gazonkas'."

Yeah...

Besides, the ('s) denotes ownership, "kancho's" wouldn't make sense anyways.

That's exactly what I thought when I read the first post. Seems like everyone agrees; good to see this forum's overall intelligence.

What would the the thought process involved regarding "I did a lot of kancho's" anyway? I'd have to assume something along the lines of "the kanchoes I owned did each other" or something. (Now THERE'S an Engrish phrase for ya! :D)
