I just read in my August 18th morning newspaper (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) that a 20 year old Menasha, Wisconsin, man teaching English to young Japanese students went missing three days ago. Andrew Lathrop is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison having just completed his freshman year. He moved to Japan a year ago to teach English under the Labo International Exchange Foundation. He was scheduled to return to Wisconsin this coming Saturday, August 20th.
Lathrop was last seen Monday morning in Hakodate, a port city on the island of Hokkaido. Police began their search shortly after he failed to reunite with his travel companion and his cell phone would not ring. Shanti Laird, a foundation coordinator has joined in the search for Lathrop in Hakodate, which has a population of about 300,000. She said that Japan's low crime rate leads her to believe that Lathrop had not been the victim of foul play. She suspected that he fell or suffered another type of accident.
Needless to say his parents and friends are sick with worry. If I read or hear anything more about Andrew Lathrop, I will add a comment in this thread.
