get a book or take a class if you're serious about it. I recommend textbooks published by The Japan Times.

Watch more anime. You'll figure it out eventually.

not true. Learning individual words can be acheived through this but learning to articulate actual comprehendable sentances requires something more in depth.

To be honest I dont see the point in being able to speak the language if you can't read and write it. So I'd start by learning both the hiragana and katakana then go through some text books and go from their

Furthermore, we're learning the ~ば structure in Japanese right now, and one my favorite example is:

アニメを見なければ、日本語が上手になる。

(Unless it's Doraemon. I've never seen Bleach, but something tells me it's not quite Doraemon.)

here is a little program that i used to learn the hiragana/katakana...it won't help you write them as it doesn't present stroke order...but it helps with reading and memorization...just follow the link: http://www.dreambreed.com/software.html ...and then download the dream kana...it helped me learn them fast...

Yeah, watching anime without a grasp of basic grammar will fuck your Japanese ability hard, up the ass, without protection. Honestly, do you think that watching Bugs Bunny without a basic grasp of English grammar would facilitate communication? Or do you think it would make folks think that saying "What's up Doc?" is normal English communication?

Exactly.

ありがとう。確かに冗談を言っていた。アニメさえ見ないで日本語を勉強するのはだめだと思う。
(After all, if my Japanese is so crappy after all that normal study, imagine if I only learned it from anime? :p )

I found the GENKI and JAPANESE FOR BUSY PEOPLE books were good starting points.

get a text with a cd rom. That is the best way, so you can also hear how words are pronounced.

I downloaded the Learn Japanese Collection (http://ts.searching.com/directory.asp?mode=torrentdetails&id=249382&query=learn+japanese) a while back, its 6Gigs though but has the complete series 1 & 2 of the Japanese Basic TV show and all the study course materials Pimsleur Japanese series mp3's and loads more.

The first thing I did, on my very first day of learning Japanese, was start with kana (hiragana first). It was a big help. After that, I started reading Japanese manga (not the best for new language learners, but it almost always has furigana and my reading speed increased exponentially within a few months) and learning basic grammar and vocabulary. I highly reccomend A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar, and later on, A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar. Once you can read kana and know some basic vocabulary, it's time to start kanji.

I reccomend that you watch/read at least a little something in Japanese every day. It will get you more accustomed to the language.

Also, once you're past the basic level, you should get an electronic dictionary. Mine was very useful until it mysteriously broke...

I know that many of you are young and whatnot, and probably can't afford to shell out the money for the actual pimsleur CDs and whatnot, but I'd highly recommend considering buying them if you are serious about learning. They are expensive to produce, and purchasing them will support the people creating good language learning materials. Music CDs, I can understand downloading to a certain point, same with TV shows, but downloading rather specialized language learning materials doesn't sit as well with me.

I probably would consider it if I actually used the mp3 versions I got... and uh... had a job. Heh.

I agree with you too a certain extent, however in this case the videotapes of "Let's Learn Japanese Basic" (the ones I have) are not available for general distribution but only as donations from The Japan Foundation's Japanese-Language Teaching Materials Donation Program, according to them people should inquire Video Pedic (http://www.jpf.go.jp/e/urawa/e_j_rsorcs/e_jrs_02_04.html) about distribution.
