I've been seeing a lot of love threads on this board, and it reminded me of an event a while ago. I've also seen some great advice, and I thought maybe some you might be willing to share your wisdom with me. I promise this isn't a sappy story...I think.
==
I have an unsolved mystery. And it's driving me crazy.
The problem began in seventh grade. There was this guy, Chris, who I used to have a crush on back in fifth grade. I don't love him as much as I used to, but there's still a lingering feeling of "what if's" two years later. By the way, these events happen chronologically.
Part 1: Cafeteria Incident - One day, I was in the lunch line, and those lines are usually pretty long. Out of boredom, I looked around the cafeteria, and I see him staring right at me. I look away, and look back again, and his eyes were still fixed in my direction. The next day, the same thing happened. This time, I stared right back at him. He didn't flinch or anything. Eventually I had to look away because I arrived at the cashier. The third day, the same thing happens again. This time, I smile at him. No response. Just staring at me. This kept up for a while...like weeks.
Now, our cafeteria tables were those typical ones, with a long table in the middle, sandwiched between two long rows of seat. Like a long picnic table. And he was sitting on the side closest to the lunch line, so if he wanted to look at my direction, he would have to turn his body around, as opposed to just raising his head. And when he looked at my direction, there was no discreetion or "just a glance" thing at all. He was sitting backwards with his back to the table, eating his lunch and observing. Oh, and I don't know if this is significant or not, but he was doing this "observation" with couple of other friends.
Part 2: Afterschool Incident - Science class was my last period of the day. Several times, when I come out of the classroom alone, Chris (usually walking with someone else) and I walk past each other. When he's approaching me, he looks at me with the same look as the ones in the cafeteria incident. After he walks past, he turns around, and continue to stare for three or four more seconds. Sometimes he even starts walking backwards to stare at me.
Part 3: The Hallway Incident (This is the REAL mystery) - Okay, so I have history and science after lunch. It just so happens that those two classes are across the hall from each other. Yet, because the science teacher keeps her students in after the bell rings, I'm always standing outside in the hall (in a single-file line against the wall because we're in middle school) waiting to go in. One day, I was standing outside, waiting, when Chris walks by, heading for his next class. In the hall, there is only him and me. Obviously I see him, and he sees me.
The next second, something unexpected happens. He was walking close to the side of the hallway I was standing on, and when he gets right in front of me, he stops. Then turn to the side, and look right into my eyes. His nose was literally two centimeters away from mine. I'm too scared to do anything wrong to break the atmosphere, so I just stood there, stiff, staring back at him. He just stares at me for probably no more than five seconds, but it felt like five hours to me. Then he finally awakens from his trance or something and continues on his merry way, moving to the middle of the empty hallway.
Then, just as I was looking at his retreating figure, some substitute teacher in another classroom further down the hallway calls out to him. He turns around and waves. As he turns back to face forward, his eyes meet mine, and he smiles. And amidst the shock, I think I managed a smile too.
That's the end of it. After this hallway incident, everything else stopped. No more cafeteria incident, no more afterschool incidents.
===
I don't get it. AT ALL. What was going on in his mind? Why did he stare at me like that in the Hallway Incident? Nothing makes sense. If he liked me, how come it took so long for him to smile back at me? Any ideas?

More information is needed. How old is Chris? Was this elementary or middle school? How old are you? Are you in seventh grade?
What is his story?

WoW....I just realized you're a girl!
But yeah, that is very creepy and strange. Most girls would have not liked that at all. Totally wacko if you ask me.
Kids are weird in middle school, no? I remember some girl went around asking people if she could slap them. When she got to me I jokingly told her to take her best shot and offered the side of my face to her....WHACK!!!!11!1!1 I had her hand print on the side of my face! I was just so shocked I could only stare & THEN she just started balling & telling me how sorry she was! LOL......but anyway, you see? Kids are crazy in middle school. :D

The kid was probably just trying to freak you out. Either that or he was just trying to get an eyefull.

Chris is in same grade as me. I crushed on him in elementary school (which I doubt he knows) but he acted strange in middle school, seventh grade
I don't know his story. If I knew, it won't be a mystery, would it? ^_^ And if you're suggesting that I ask him... that's kind of too late, since he lives an hour away, in the remote region of California (the few that still exists) I've told my account as accuratly and without bias as I possibly can.
GA: ...I don't know what I did to give you an impression that I was a guy... ^^; Yes, guys were weird in middle school (and frankly, not that much different as frosh or soph in HS) but you guys have been down that road too, haven't you? If you were the one doing this, what would you have been thinking?

How old are you, and what grade are you in? I mean, people can try to impart their wisdom upon you, but without critical information and backstory, nobody (and I repeat, -NOBODY-) will be able to give you an explanation with any semblance of accuracy. Just trust me on this one. =)
If you want, come into IRC and I'll talk to you directly: http://blitzed.org/chat
Put op9 in the "channel" box and ... well, whatever you want in the "nick" box.
Maybe he was trying to send a telepathetic message or something. Definitely odd.

Enter the mind of 7th grader GA:
That girl is really pretty. I want to stare at her to make sure she knows how much I like her. It feels so good to have this sort of power over her. Makes me so excited. Same kind of feeling I get when I tease a girl I like. This is really fun and at the same time stimulating. I hope I can make this last a long time because this is really fun. I don't want to date her b/c I'm a little kid and dating girls is still very new to me & I wouldn't feel comfortable with it. So, for now I will just continue with my little game. But, damn...is she pretty. I like her eyes & she is so shy...ZOMG POWER ORGASM! :o
Leaving 7th grader GA's mind to present GA's mind:
When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so
happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.
There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.
Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!
At night, when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.
I so love the DDR version of that song done by Scooter! :D

And wasn't my first post the backstory?
GA: I think you might be right. Now that I think about it... he was among the "popular" group, and while every popular guy dated every popular girls back then, he never did.

Sounds like someone who will grow up with some problems if he doesn't break out of that stuff. Stalker tendencies for the lose.
Oh, & NES about the picture thing.
<---
Though I do have to ask, how did you handle being slapped for no reason? Did you just take it and walk away or...?

He wasn't stalking you or anything like that. He was just fucking with you. He probably was talking with his friends and stuff like "Hey guys I'm gonna totally freak out this poor girl". Evidence: that some of his friends actually joined in the fun at one point.
Liked you? Na, he was just messing with your head.

That's cruel... Not very classy at all.
But I don't doubt that could have been the reality of the situation. Boys at that age can do some fudged up things.

well, hmm... knowing his friends, I doubt they're jerks.
okay, so let me explain about his friends in more detail, then you can tell me.
--
In the cafeteria, there were two other friends he was with. Micheal and Brian. After lunch, I had two classes with Micheal. It just so happens that I sat next to him, and we talked a lot. He was popular, but he didn't act like your typical popular guy. He was really nice, easy to talk to, funny, and friendly. (yeah, very informative huh) I also remember teasing him a lot...^_^; Once my friend asked me if I would date any one guy in our school, who would it be, I chose him, but I don't think I ever went beyond the "friend" line.
And then, there was Brian. He was also in my next class, but I sat a seat away from him. He was also nice... sometimes too nice. Sometimes it feels like he's a people-pleaser. Like one time in class, the teacher told us to sit up straight, and he sat VERY straight, stiff as a stick. Everyone else sat up, and just slouched down ten minutes later. He kept up his position until the teacher told him he could relax.
Now, I don't know if this relates to anything, but here's something that happened between the Micheal and me that's sort of related to love:
In my circle of friends, there was a girl named Narissa, whom, back then, I was mad at. And so being a typical immature girl, I was trying to dig up some 'dirt' on her. I remember she used to had a crush on Brian. I wasn't trying to hurt her or something, just get into her business without her knowledge. I was trying to find out if Brian actually liked Narisa back. So I decided to ask Micheal, who was good friends with Brian. I asked, "Do you know Narisa _last name_?" He didn't. Yes, I realize it was a very strange question. Just because Micheal didn't know, it didn't mean Brian didn't, but that answer still worked for me. Just for the record, I never told this to her, or anyone else.

Perhaps he's a homosexual? Perhaps he wasn't yet interested in girls that way? Some people get into these things later than others.

I think you are taking this entire situation too seriously. The friends only joined in with him once. They weren't being EVIL they were just teasing and having fun. This is really what I beleive was happening in the situation you are describing here.
Anyway, you always have the option of asking Chris why he was doing that. You said this happened back in the seventh grade (I have no idea what grade you are in now), but I gather these events are now ancient history (in middleschool terms, anyhow). If that is the case, forget about it, it makes no difference now. If by some chance he did like you, it was long ago and kids at that age tend to move on pretty quickly.

okay. I guess I'll just file this incident as "childish joke" then. It didn't really matter whether he liked me or not. I don't care about that, because I've got something 100x better now. I was looking for an explanation on WHAT happened. Something to label and categorize and archive into my memory. (like gmail ^_^) If he was stalking me, I want to be able to say "oh yeah, I got stalked once." if he had a crush on me, then I want to at least be able to say "oh yeah, someone got a crush on me once." Just ANYthing to label the events, whether it be good or bad.
that's all there is. there was. thanks for all the help.
