Hey everyone,
I'm going to Japan with my friend for 2 weeks in the beginning of january with my friend. we are going to try to travel around as much as possible, staying nights in youth hostels because they are inexpensive. we also plan to pick up a rail pass. i speak a bit of japanese (2 years college level). anyway, its come the time to plan our trip out. I was wondering if any of you could recommend places to go, and things to see in those places. We will be starting in Yokohama (thats where i will be meeting him, because he will have been there for 2 weeks already with relatives), and probably be spending most of our time on Honshu. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Buy a 2 week rail pass. It will make your plans more flexible, and since you'll probably be doing a lot of travel, it will be cheaper too.
I would recommend seeing Miyajima. It's a very beautiful place to visit.

Go to Nikko-Ji and explore the bottom of the Tokyo Tower. And definitely do the Mori building in Roppongi Hills.

Kimi Ryokan (http://www.kimi-ryokan.jp/) is a good cheap place to stay at in Tokyo.

Depends how far down you're willing to go, how long you want to travel and so on.

I'd also ask you what do you want to see, urban Japan or rual Japan? Modern or old?

i'm going to Japan in Januari myself, and asked this question a couple of months ago

see http://www.outpostnine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=869 and you might find some good answers. Although my question was where to find ROMANTIC spots, but maybe you find good suggestions.

Get a guidebook beeotch. www.lonelyplanet.com. Check LP Thorntree fourm. It seems like a lot of people who post here are kids who have never even been to Japan, so I wouldn't expect to much in the way of useful input.

What are your interests? Your budget? It's difficult to offer advice to such a broad open ended question such as yours. Be more specific and you'll probably get better results.
