I am a 21 year old Black young adult living in here in the US. I'm going to receive my bachelor’s degree in Digital Entertainment & Game Design at ITT Tech in about 3 years. I was thinking about going to Japan thought JET after I get my degree. Well, the reason I started this Thread was to get the experiences of Black Americans or any one of African Descent to Post there personal experience of what its like to be a Black man or woman in Japan. I want to know what the Japanese people think about us and how you personally have been treated. I want to know what to expect when I arrive.

You don't have to Be Black to talk, ask, or post Question on this Thread

You aren't doing so hot yourself, but I'll take the compliment nonetheless.

Judging by the editorials, I'd say they'll think you have a huge penis.

way to scare him, everyone...

The way the children act around you will depend on the groups you teach, and what you let them get away with. Being a foreigner in Japan is an interesting experience, the fact that you're black doesn't matter so much as "you are not Japanese."

If you have a Livejournal you can join the Blacks_In_Japan community. (Which I am a member of.) I can't wait to go to Japan. I am curious about the racism aspect though as I am half italian and not very dark.. So I wonder how I will be taken to. I considered being a JET too, but I think I'll stick to my current plan for now. =P

No, being black matters. There are so few blacks in Japan that the people tend to believe the stereotypes. I'm sure you can convince people otherwise once they get to know you, but Japanese people are much more intimidated by blacks than by whites. A girl who has no problems with dating a white guy might be hesitant to date a black guy. Sort of like America, but magnified.

But then again, it's probably easier to pick up rebellious girls who like "bad boys" or are really into hip hop. Especially near the dance clubs you see a lot of black guys with Japanese girls.
