Discuss your favorite animes and such.
I know there's been threads like this, but not this exact.
My favorites right now are Bleach, and Naruto.
My all time favorite is probably FLCL, just because that's what got me to be an anime nerd, and it got me into J-Rock.

Speed Grapher is my favorite right now. I also like the Aim for the Top 2, Bleach and Beck.

Cowboy Bebop. Sorry, I know that's a very common choice but I really connected with the show. I loved the stories and the characters were very real... The ending made me somewhat happy and sad at the same time, which made for quite a lifting experience.
I also love the soundtrack to the series... Some of the best music I have ever heard in an anime. I'm not so much a J-Pop or J-Rock fan as I am a fan of eclectic music done by Japanese artists. Especially the jazz portion of the series, as I love jazz enough already.

Currently Watching Kidou Senshi Zeta Gundam with my Frau, She doesn't usually give anime much of a chance, but she likes this one. I'm glad because it is one of my favorites.
Also got two new volumes of Urusei Yatsura last week, Gods I love that show. The eps on these discs were hilarious, can't wait to get more in the next few months.
I also recently received the first Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman box set, a fun super hero series. Very old, but its damn good for 1972, and its a damn sight better than the Superfriends and other shit like that that was so prominent in those days in the US. Can't wait for the next set to come out.

I kind of liked Infinite Ryvius. Think Lord of the Flies crossed with Evangelion. One of the characters has a really interesting development (damsel-in-distress to slightly obsessive girlfiriend to religious cult-leader, and it makes sense)

My all-time favorite is Cowboy Bebop. Yes, I know it's over-hyped and all that shiznit but it was the series that got me hooked. It had GREAT music, style, and characters.
I'm currently watching GITS:SAC and Wolf's Rain. That's pretty much it but my friend has her FLCL stuff so I might be watching that soon.

Bah, Cowboy Bebop is *not* overhyped. I have yet to see an anime (that isn't done by Miyazaki) that has come even close to the quality of CB.
edit: Which reminds me... I have a hand-drawn picture of Spike from the character artist autographed to me, sitting on my desk at home. Keep meaning to get that thing framed, but never seem to get around to it...

Ya know, Space battleship Yamato was the series that got me into anime (all those years ago, before most of y'all were even born), and as much as I love it, its not my absolute favorite of all time.
I never understood why people proclaime their first anime their all time favorite. Though I guess nowadays, they are probably not likely to see something they consider better, so it becomes less of a mystery :D

I have always found it incredibly hard to get into Anime. I've tried sampling a few series but honestly, I just can't dig them. Beyond Miyazaki I find them difficult and painful to watch. :(

The feelings one has on their first experience in watching anime is something they will never have again. Same thing happened to me with concern to RPGs. First I every played was Super Mario RPG. It wasn't an amazing game, but it will always be something important to me... same thing with FFVII, which was my first dramatic RPG.
My first was DBZ, and while now when I watch it I really can't stay interested, it brought on emotions I have never felt. That can't be imitated easily.

My first real anime was Cowboy Bebop, I liked it but didn't know it was anime. It was the first night [adultswim] aired. Than I watched Inuyasha and was like Oh, this is pretty cool. Than I liked anime, and knew what it was. THAAAAAAAAAAAAAN I saw FLCL and was all like woo anime! Than I saw it again for like the 12th time, and was like I need to find some new anime. That's how it all started!

PCP and Daishikaze: Aside from Cowboy Bebop and a few samples here and there, I feel the same way. I actually enjoyed the original Dragonball more than Dragonball Z when I was growing up. It was whimsical, had action, and was entertaining... not all this "No! I am the most powerful being in the world! And I wasn't even trying that last time we fought! Now I will use 33.7892% of my power!"
Bobbybirdtree

It's about a bunch of rock musician trying to make it in the Japanese music scene. It's pretty cool because it deal with American/Japanese cross- culture.

Anime shouldn't be aired on American TV unless its aired unedited.
FLCL was aired unedited, except one small part. When the Dad was like naked or whatever it had a larger censor for American TV, also the last episode it didn't play the credits.
Now, Naruto is coming to Toonami, and Toonami is like a guillotine of censorship for anime. Naruto! Let's be friends instead of fighting!

Some animés I liked:
RahXephon: Okay, so what if it's a clone of EVA. It's a BETTER clone.
Infinite Ryvius: Love the Lord of the Flies theme.
Full Metal Alchemist: Though the ending was terribly disappointing.
FMP, all of them, are pretty good. Has a kind of whimsical comedy/action/romance vibe that's really hard to describe. Especially as I could *swear* I had seen the car-chase seen from FMP: TSR 05 before :p

At least they don't fuck with the story like they did in my day.
Robotech was Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada all edited together, and while it was good in its own right, It was still heavily edited.
Gatchaman got even worse treatment from Sandy Frank (famous for bringing Gamera to the US). edited alot out added in a robot for no reason, and said anyone who died was really a robot.
Yamato was fairly intact except for a few scenes. Then the second season came over and the changed the names so it linked up with the first( the second season had new charactors that looked similar to older ones, so they changed the names and scripts so people wouldn't know the older charactors died)
After that alittle nudity or swear word covered or bleeped out doesn't seem so bad does it?

What's Beck about? I saw the cover for the manga and almost got it. Instead I got GetBackers, haha.
Beck is about a bunch of kids around 14-17 (in the beginning) trying to make a band while somewhat keeping the true japanese social atmosphere for that age group. Despite it's soundtrack having "engrish" material that would give some people from the J-Pop lyrics thread a heart attack, it's actually a pretty damn good series and one of my favorites.
Current animes I keep up with these days are mostly Gundam related (Gundam Seed Destiny currently) being a robo-type fan since Getta Robo G and Grandizer era. I'm also following Monster, Hungry Heart Wildstriker and Full Metal Panic TSR.

Hm... Good question. Problem is that a lot of the older stuff simply *looks* too old, or is heavily culturally contextual. Stuff like "Ashita no Joe" rocked hard for its time, but I'm not entirely sure how well it has aged.

I've a question for some of you that run around on the Con-circuit. Until recently (two week) I've been stuck in Hawaii(and Afghanistan) for the last six or so years and so I've pretty much gotten completely out of touch with that scene. I'm curious about fellow I used to run around with named Talisen Jaffe. I've heard he still makes an ass out of himself at cons. Just wondering if any of you know him or met him.

Urusei Yatsura is one of those ones that is heavily culturally contextual, so much so that most licensing companies passed on it and said it could not be translated no matter how hard they tried.
Animeigo said "yes it can be translated, you just have to work harder than usual thats all", and they are now only a few volumes away from completion. and despite its age, it still has a huge following.
Gatchaman has also been translated, and that one is really old. Yet its selling pretty well at the moment. Also Lupin III is doing quite well.
I see what the real problem is though, most companies won't attempt to translate an older series because they fear they won't make any return on their investment.
I can fully understand that. The thing is, anime is still a niche market. Oh sure there are alot of fans now, but 90% of them are only into because its popular at the moment. Soon people will be saying its all overrated and the fandom will shrink back down to where it was in 1995.
I wonder how coherent this will look? Its pretty late, so excuse my lack of clarification

No I think your right, especially with the cost of DVD's. There are very few specialty store rent a lot of anime DVDs. I knew one in Hawaii. Keeping up with a series just gets too expensive( hense why I love that site). You pretty much go in blind when you buy an anime dvd.
However I think the manga market will stay big. They're way more cost effective, usually have better art, less censored and more accessibly to try out before buying. I think more and more people will rather buy manga than buy anime. Tokyopop really hit the nailed on the head when they set their prices.

One Piece (generally) has HORRIBLE artwork for the anime, as well as a few voices I don't particularly like.
do you mean the horrible american dub or the original japanese voices? because the jap voices are great. and if you hate them I'll KILL YOU! and the art is not bad. perhaps it isn't as great as the manga, but it is nowhere near bad.
Also; GTO live action is so badass. the guy that plays onizuka is just hilarious. and little tomoko is so cute!
Yakitate Japan is wonderous. It's pretty standard plot formula, but the characters consistently crack me up. especially the manager.
Case Closed is also a favorite. Great american voices.
Macross Zero is amazing. people should also watch macross plus.
Ultimate girls is such.. fun. and pornish.
lastly, Twin Spica is totally awesome. an emotional series that is very well written.

As I've said I've always liked animated movies/series, even before i started watching animé. To be fair I find a lot of the "japanisms" in animé quite annoying, if western studios started making good animated series I'd probably prefer that (Spawn TAS is something of an exception in this case, it is also much better than the comic)

I didn't even know it's popular. Out here it was never popular. Well I guess like the stupid stuff like Yu-gioh or w/e and pokemon were but besides that no.
Well, its definitly a lot more popular than its ever been. I don't exactly know where it started, with Adult Swim or the Pokemon generation... Either way, the video's about 10 years ago could only be bought at Cons and specialty stores. I remember only 5 years ago it being one or two shelves at a best buy and 3 shelves at EB Games. Years ago I remember drooling over an entire 6 shelves in the very back of the mall video store, next to the softcore porn section. Nowadays, we can browse not just one shelf of anime but an entire aisle at Best Buy, and the mall video store moved the section more toward the front and rivals the large selection at Best Buy.
So yes, it is more popular than before. Now if only it would gain enough popularity to make those prices drop... That would make me happy.
And to answer the OP question, Cowboy Bebop. I've been into anime for a long time, but there was a couple years there were I just lost interest due to lack of good content in any of the video stores around. Then Cowboy Bebop came out and rekindled the anime spark in me. No other series has since captured me in the same way that Bebop did, however it got me back into watching and enjoying anime. For that, it sits, the king of a very long list of anime I've seen.

There is that phrase again, curious.
You have only been watching anime for a short while, you haven't seen even a sample of what anime as a whole can be, and yet you have already declared your absolute favorite.
Perhaps I misunderstood and you meant to say "one of my favorite anime charactors"? Or maybe your favorite from that series?
Personally I can never make such a bold statement, I love too many charactors for different reasons to ever pick one definative favorite.

My favorites at the moment are Bleach and Naruto. Although lately I have really finding myself liking the older stuff a lot more than most of the new stuff. Some of my all time favorites are:
1 Irresponsible Captain Tylor
2 Anything in the Macross universe (well except Macross 2 but that was made more interesting when I realized that the drama they are playing on the radio in Macross 7 Dynamite is Macross 2 (i think) and that they used the Macross 2 music in Macross 7)
3 Lupin the 3rd
4 GTO
5 Trigun
6 Slam Dunk
7 City Hunter
8 Berserk (though I wish I had the manga)
9 Ruroni Kenshin (through the Shi Shi Oh story, then not as good after0
10 Golden Boy
Monseur Tinklekins

My all-time favourite anime has to be Inuyasha. Ahh, I can just hear the boos, because it's just so cliche. Inuyasha has become so slaughtered within the n00b fandom, especially on Gaiaonline--everywhere you turn, there's a roleplay with one-liners butchering the characters. It's just horrible! The series has become so popular lately I want to vomit, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for Takahashi-sama's work.
As for my top two and four, I'd have to say Hagaren and Wolf's Rain are tied for my second favourite (because they're just damn awesome, but again overly widespread and becoming almost as horrifically mainstream as Inuyasha), and my fourth is Hellsing. Blood, guts, gore...the manga certainly makes art of vampirism (although a lot of people would argue that it's an art in it's own right, anyway).
current faves: bleach, naruto, MARchen, Sousei no Aquarion, Ueki no Housoku, Honey & Clover & Mahou Sensei Negima
I have alot of other faves, but it's much easier to just list out the current faves of what I'm watching.

but, i guess they just didn't want to add more devious girls that Onizuka would have to deal with...maybe they ran out of ideas...i don't know how they can re-create the scene with Kanzaki when Onizuka jumps off the building with her; that was badass. Then again...they used the same ideas about burying Kanzaki on Mt. Fuji in the Drama Special with that other girl who was in love with her teacher.
Onizuka's the greatest though...no one can predict him, not even Kanzaki knows what the hell he's going to do. And no problems with the Live Action links i hope.
and in s-CRY-ed, Kazuma charges in head first with an arm...and gets is ass OWNED at first. The main point of the story i found was the character rivalry between him and Ryuhou...basically trying to prove that he was worthy. The whole HOLY/Alter bit seemed secondary compared to that.

Heh, I finished Bleach last night, now I have to wait for the next sub to be released!
I just want this part to get done with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*spoiler type thing*
Rescue Rukia already damn it! Although, it was getting boring, it got way awesome with all the twists and stuff, like how the cat (forgot it's name) was really that girl.
I got like 6 or more episodes of Tenjou Tenge, haven't started it yet. I might finish Chobits though, I don't know why I liked that show. It's pretty funny though.

Hmm, I feel like I'm the only one that really likes the Tenchi series... All except Tenchi in Tokyo, though...
Dragonball Z was the first anime I got into, and my favorite for a while. But I started to realize all the freaking episodes were the same, progressing roughly in this order:
- Weaker Z-warriors get obliterated by the for 2-5 episodes
- Stronger Z-warriors give an even match for a few episodes until the enemy transforms into a stronger, cheaper enemy
- Stronger Z-warriors get obliterated for several episodes
- Z-warriors continue to get obliterated while Goku (or strongest Z-warrior at the time) spends several episodes arriving at the battle scene
- Goku (or strongest Z-warrior) finally arrives and gives an even match
- Enemy pulls an even cheaper transformation and Goku/other gets beaten mercilessly
- Strongest Z-warrior pulls a transformation of his own (usually a new Super-Saiyan level) and saves the world
I'm skipping a few scenes, (especially the crucial "powering up" levels) but that's basically every episode.
As for my favorite animes:
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
FLCL
Trigun
Excel Saga
Gundam Wing
Samurai Champloo
Inuyasha
Lupin the Third

How Many of you were into anime before Toonami? How about before Sailor Moon aired on western TV?
I just want to get an Idea of when everyone got started really.
P.S. I love Tenchi Muyo! and Universe (not as much as the OVA though), but Tokyo sucked. I really think the creators dropped the ball with this series, They should have continued with the OVA storyline a very long time ago, I think Universe really should have been that continuation (even though I like Universe as it is, THe OVA storyline was much better). Tenchi had the potential to be for the 90s what Urusei Yatsura was for the 80s, and they just never followed through.

Dunno when these started actually, I watched Starzingers and Moomins on TV as a kid, but I can say that Toonami or Sailor Moon did not *directly* interest me (I started watching animé when I got a hold of Shadow Skill from my brother at one point... Crappy series really :p )

Someone else who has seen Starzingers, how refreshing. When did you first see this series? I first saw it back in '82 or '83 (somewhere around that time, it was before I was old enough for school, so I had no concept of time back then haha), along with Grendizer, Gaiking, Danguard A, Getter Robo and Mazinger Z (all of which were dubbed in english and some with different names, but the same shows still). Around the same time we also had Space battleship Yamato (dubbed as Star Blazers, but still good), then Golion and Dairugger (both dubbed as Voltron) came out, followed by Robotech, and other of other stuff. Looking back There was an aweful lot of anime on TV when I was a child.
If I remember correctly, Shadow Skill was out on video shortly before Toonami came into being. Though the reason Shadow Skill isn't popular is because its only the OVA, not the TV series. US firms seem to have an a problem licensing whole series most of the time, unless they are certain it will make a huge profit (which with todays dvd prices that seems unlikely, so they don't bother)
Other times they do release a series, but put in the minimal effort in restoring the print if its an older series, so it winds up looking worse than it should with todays technology. There is absolutely no excuse for it, just that they don't want to spend the money to restore it if its not going to sell. Problem is that it won't sell because of this most of the time. ADV has been guilty of this recently, and so had Manga Entertainment.
Ah shit I'm ranting again....Sorry everyone.....sorry.....I always do that when I don't mean too.
Anyways, anymore people from the era before Toonami or Sailor Moon?

That counts, At least in my book. When I started watching all that stuff I mentioned earlier, I didn't even know what Japan was. What I did know was the difference between those shows and american shows, the style difference was easily identifiable even to a young child.

I was born in '84, so it has got to be later than that for me :p I must've been at least 5-6 years old, as I can remember some of the stuff, so make that around '90 or so. Note that I watched the swedish version which was if possible even more butchered than all the others :p (basically they ran the first 25 or so episodes normally, then they skipped to the end of the 70-something episodes long series and showed the last episode, the ending didn't make much sense)
. Looking back There was an aweful lot of anime on TV when I was a child.

I've never watched anime on TV, primarily because I HATE dubbing. (purist snob I know) I got hooked after watching Spirited Away. First I tracked down the rest of Miyazaki's films available in region 1, which of course led me to Lupin III. It may have ended there except a friend of mine had been after me for months to watch Inu Yasha. The first three or so eps of that and it was all over for me.
Favs
Gits, Ranma 1/2, Bebop, Evangelion etc, the usual suspects I suppose.
good but not great
Witch Hunter Robin, Last Exile
What I'm watching now
Bits and pieces of..
Gits SAC: 2nd Gig (is it just me or did this take a great series and make it even better?)
Naruto (up to episode 4 or so ;-) )
Love Hina (Im kinda lukewarm on this, but I'll give it another couple of eps before abandoning it)
Hellsing (who doesnt love hot vampire slaying action?)

i first started watching anime probably when they used to show Sailor Moon for the first time. And then when they used to show Megaman in mornings along with DBZ for the first time on Ch. 11 on Sunday mornings. After that, they showed Escaflowne on Ch. 5 but then stopped after about 5 episodes...which was fucking annoying.
Those were good times...probably the only reason i ever had of waking up early on Sunday mornings...

Samurai Champloo (The ninja baseball episode alone was great)
Gunbuster
And um... Gundam Wing was good for it's time but now I like Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. Bleach has gotten better and I enjoy it more. However, my favorite manga at the moment is without a doubt Mahou Sensei Negima.

Hey, has anyone checked out the new Tenchi series: Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki? It's a new series, and since I doubt anyone has ripped it yet, I decided to do the honest thing and actually spend money. It's not bad, so far. I've only seen the first three episodes. The only thing I'd recommend is changing the language to Japanese with English subs. They got new voices for most of the characters and I think the voice-acting is pretty subpar.
And just to answer an earlier question, I've been watching anime since DBZ used to air on the WB. I usually just stick to the animes they show on American TV, though.

I'm not asking if you saw anything older than 10 years. I'm stating that it seems no one here seems to like anything over 10 years old. Just because you saw something that is older doesn't tell you you watch alot of anime from that era.
But What can I expect? Most of y'all got into anime because of Cartoon network, if they never showed anything, alot of you probably would even care about it right now.
Also most of you say you download anime rather than purchase it, which I can understand, But it seems all anyone downloads is the New stuff that isn't out over here yet.
The truely terrible thing is, that even if you were to go out and buy something from the 70s or 80s, you probably wouldn't enjoy it because its not as fancy as the most recent shows. it happens everytime.

Why is it that everyone is listing their favorite animes when there was already a thread for doing that? I thought this was supposed to be general anime discussion?
Very little discussion has happened so far, there are more lists than conversations

I hope they have a second season, from what I've heard of the whole flashback arc taking up the whole damn show it's a waste of frigging time to not have a friggin second season.

I'm guessing nobody likes most animes over 10 years old.
Sad, because there is so much great stuff from the pre-95 era, and it seems no one in the fandom wants it.
I guess I'll have to step up my buying because at this rate, because soon all the pre-90s stuff thats out right now will be discontinued because the fandom doesn't want them. Ho hum

Male:
Captain Harlock (Appeared in many Leiji Matsumoto anime, and had his own series too): his coolness cannot be overstated
Ataru Moroboshi (Urusei Yatsura): Most Perverted man in the Universe (at least back then, he may have been surpassed by alot of the modern day freaks around nowadays)
Casval Rem Deikun/Char Aznable/Quattro Bageena (Gundam/Zeta/CA): The Coolest Gundam charactor ever, so cool that Bandai keeps copying him in every new series.
Hikage (Blood Reign): Bad ass Ninja with a mission, saw some pretty fucked up things and didn't bat an eye.
Arsene Lupin the 3rd: The original thief with a heart of gold.
Female:
The Entire female cast of Urusei Yatsura: Each has so much to like, it would be a shame to just single one out. If I have too, then Lum wins hands down. but I liked them all
Prissilla S. Asagiri (BGC 2032): The major bad ass of the Knight Sabers. So popular that they rewrote the story so she wouldn't die in Episode 6, which pissed off the creator, who pulled out if the project when there were still 8 episode left to film.
Lynn Minmay (Macross): Yes, I know how alot of people don't like her, but I thought she was an extremely well written charactor (Considering that Mari Iijima said that none of the charactor was her except the voice, the charactor was that well written). And I like her singing, so sue me.
Leona Ozaki (Dominion Tank Police): Who'da that a psychotic (bordering on Sexual at times) obsession with Tanks would be so funny? Masamune Shirow, thats who.
Asuka Natsume AKA Nuku Nuku (APCCG Nuku Nuku): possibly the most adorable cat girl ever.
Thats it for now, I know there are alot more I'm forgetting

Of course not, if you only watch what CN puts out, or what is en vogue at the moment (I.E.: Naruto, FMP, etc. etc.), then you won't have heard of any of them. Most of these charactors were around before you were even born.
seriously, you should really branch out into classic anime, you are missing alot of great stuff, if you only stick to what is popular at the moment.

It always bothers me when people say that his work really "shows its age". Which is far from true. Almost all, if not all, of the stuff shown in his works is still futuristic or at least reasonable to have in a future setting. It's not like watching the original Star Trek and snickering as the crew consults "futuristic" three ton computers with no screens.
The voice acting is well done, the plots are still just as deep and meaningful, and all the other apects of a good show remain.
Some people just can't handle art styles that aren't the typical boring styles seen in thousands of other cliche animes.

How Many of you were into anime before Toonami? How about before Sailor Moon aired on western TV?
I just want to get an Idea of when everyone got started really.
.
I remember a subtitled version of Dragonball back in the 80's. Long before Cartoon Network and Toonami. And I had friends passing around tapes of Bubblegum Crisis and Dominion Tank Police before Toonami came along.
I didn't really get into them until Toonami, though. I got wrapped up in the short run series like Outlaw Star, Blue Submarine, Angel Cop, Sorcerer Hunters, and Big O. Bought boxed sets of most of those. And I got involved in Pokemon with my son. Then Digimon. Then Dragonball Z. Then Inuyasha, HACKsign and Yu Yu Hakusho.
I drew the line at Yu-Gi-Oh. Although it's cost me a small fortune.

I have been noticing alot of general anime Hate around the forums lately, I mean a real disdain for all things anime.
Why is this? Is it because anime in all its forms is completely aweful? No, I think not. After all they only see whats on TV at the moment, which is only a drop in the ocean of the Medium. Can't judge the whole because of the small part of it you have seen.
Perhaps its the fandom that deifies anything that is flashy enough to catch their attention for five minutes? Thats a strong possibility.
The Fandom tends to like anything and everything Japanese if its flashy enough. They then proceed to yammer on and on about how awesome something is until something new shows up, then they repeat the process ad nauseum, Promptly forgetting how much they worshipped the last show.
This easy to please bunch has is who they make anime for nowadays. This is why anime that would have flopped 10 years ago is all the rage now. And because no one looks at anthing older that 10 years, they don't know that alot of new stuff is rehashed from the popular shows of yesteryear.
But wait, there is one more possibility, Maybe its because the fandom puts anime above their favorite domestic series? I think that the people that hate it for this reason shouldn't really listen to what the anime fandom says. Personally, I think alot of american animation has caught up with the anime of old in terms of writting, They don't need to match them in artwork, they have their own distinct style that sets them apart. Trying to copy what Japan (or anyone for that matter) is a mistake. Its like in the 30s and 40s when alot of animators tried to be like Walt Disney, they failed miserably and lost everything in the process.
Japanese animators knew this, and they developed their own style, and they kept adapting. in the 70s, when american animation was stuck in a rut (though still fun I grant you), Japan was coming out with fresh ideas that no one had done before. It didn't take long for america to catch up, though they hadn't quite hit on alot of themes that the Japanese were using, US animation was still damn good.
The only thing that the US had a problem with when it comes to animation is they could never drop the idea that cartoons are just for kids, or should be family oriented. Though it seems lately that they have dropped their inhibitions about such things, and have made things alot more serious.
ah I don't know. I long for the days when the fandom was small, when we all knew what we were talking about. Most fans don't know a damn thing nowadays. Ah well

Hey! I barely know anything, but that's because if I get too into it in public, people mock me, and my friends think I change so I lose them -.- it's sad but true, and if I get too much into it online I lose hard drive space. I'm still relatively new at it.
I don't watch much older works because I'm rarely given the chance though. I can't wait for NGE to go on Adult Swim (you're not in America so it's like Cartoon Network, but on for adults/teens).
I know some people are turned off by what most people think, like Cartoons=childish, and they usually put Anime in the same category as like Spongebob and such. I admit I like some dorky anime that's kinda childish, like Super Milk-chan, but the main reason I watch anime is the fact it's like reading a novel, but in picture form. They actually develop characters, and have plots. Instead of American cartoons, which are either "childish" or if they have like Action ones, they're usually boring, or stupid because they can't kill people alot of the time. I hate those shows now because I can't watch a show restricted to such limits. It's kind of hard to say, it's just boring to me.
New one's I kinda prefer over old ones because of the animation, but I'd still watch old ones.
New ones that are really good are Bleach, Naruto (well, I heard they have filler eps, I've only seen 1-19 of Naruto though :/ ), and FLCL.
Old ones I like that I've seen are Lupin the the 3rd. XD I've not seen many old ones.
Shamu

Some anime isn't childish at all. Take Samurai Champloo for example, while it has it's "childish" moments, it deals with many adult situations (i.e. Jin and his romance with a married woman/prostitute as well as many others). My mom adores that show as well as Full Metal Alchemist, she's also a huge fan of Miyazaki/studio Ghibli stuff too. Funny thing is, she thought they were just cartoons until she sat down and watched one (FMA) and realized that they're not just for kids. My dad now watches Samurai Champloo as well and really likes it (he's mad that AS took the new eps off the air until Nov. :) )
Anime night has become a family thing in my house and it's a special treat for my daughter to stay up and watch Inuyasha (yes, I'm a RIF, I can't help it!).
I guess my point is, that anime can be for everyone.
BTW h2orowe, you should watch the first two seasons of Kenshin only, otherwise I recomend sticking with the manga. I also love wearing my FMA and Inuyasha stuff! I'm not affraid to let everyone know I'm an anime geek! One guy came up to me in a store one day and was like "You watch Inuyasha!? That's awesome!" Ah...the things that make this a small world...

First anime that I watched were the super robots in Jim Terry's Force Five. U.F.O Grendizer, Getter Robo G (Starvengers), Gaiking, Danguard Ace. Spaceketeers wasn't exactly a super robot show.
I also grew up on other super robot classics like Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Getter Robo, Voltes V, and other classic titles like Tetsuwan Atom (Astroboy), Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor), Candy Candy, Akazukin Chacha, and what have you.
The anime that really got me into it was Chou Jikuu Yousai: Makorosu (Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross- NOT that Robotech crap). Up until this time, I have not found an anime title that can get me over Macross.
Right now, I'm keeping myself busy with Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Appleseed 2004, Shin Getter 2004, Macross Zero, Macross 7, Azumanga Daioh, and a couple more titles.

I called it Samurai X, because that's what it's mostly called :/
But yeah, it is good. :D I've only seen the first one though! I need to get the rest!
My fav..hm...Well, I can't pick one, but here's some that I thought were great or that I thought were great but turned out to be crap. Just for some contrast.
Full Metal Alchemist - Yay for Peer 2 Peer in college! It was really sad. Broke my heart.
Cowboy Bebor - Hehe, just like everyone else. I guess it was just really good. :-P
Detective Conan/Case Closed - It's like CSI but anime. Sorta. I like it cuz of the weird ways people can get killed. Very creative.
Flame of Recca - It was good, except for the ran out of funds and like...ended it really bad. I haven't been able to watch anime in 3 weeks cuz that ending was so terrible. It like...deterred me from anime. I'll take manga, thank you.
Magic Knight Rayearth - That was a sad one too. But I thought it was cute. Good artwork (manga).
Vision of Escaflowne - I saw this like...3 years ago, but I remember it being very interesting. Granted we watched the entire series in one night, I think it was still good despite my eyes bleeding after 8 hours.
Hmm...that's really not that much anime. I thought I watched more/liked more of them. I guess I read a lot more manga. I recommend manga over anime. That way you can have the original, uncut plot. And no ugly voices, English OR Japanese. (In Japanese girls are annoying, in English everyone is annoying.)

Top three list. This is in no particular order.
Noir- The animation will make you wet your pants, combining the robust backgrounds of .hack//sign with the gritty character designs and film-noirish attitude of Cowboy Bebop. Action choraeography is top-notch, as Kirika often kills people with simple household objects such as a tie(used as a garrote), sunglasses(broken and two and then stabbed through the temple), and a pickaxe(oh just guess). Music is Yuki Kajiura(of .hack//sign fame), but instead of the slow, meloncholic peices used in .hack, she replaces them with interesting mixes of techno, opera, J-pop, and rock(although the slower peices have not disappeared). The plotline is interesting, only slowly showing its hand and only completely revealing itself two episodes from the end. It turns out to be rather nice, but inplausible by the end. Then again, this is anime. Plausibility isn't often rewarded.
Paranoia Agent- I watched it BEFORE it was cool(IE on cartonnetwork) and I must say it was a work of certain genious. The entire series is self-referential symbolism wrapped in allegories about the japanese culture wrapped in gorgeous animation. I had to watch it twice to feel I had a grip on it, and I have only this to say: Satoshi Kon is a mad mastermind, and should be kept away from any firearms. Except for paintball guns, as they might help his work.
FLCL- Yes, it makes no sense. Yes, it's utterly insane. Yes, it could have easily been a disaster. But it's also a work of undenyable genious, even if just from an art-direction standpoint. The only thing that even comes close to comparing to this movie's visual style is the obviously acid-induced masterpeice 'The Yellow Submarine'. The recipe is similar anyway. Take rock band. Take songs. Plaster together into incoherant mass and hope like hell it turns out well. In this case, as with The Yellow Submarine, it turned out quite well.

And that's how I got hooked on The Pillows. The story may seem plotless, but to me, it's like a kid coping with the adult world. For more information about my statement, take a look at Naota's "horn".
Indeed, a child fitting in, inside the magic realm. GAINAX Style.

09-21-2005, 03:21 AM
I thought the horn was more a Freudian look at the male overcompensation and Naota's inability to have a real Oedipus complex because he lacked a mother and therefore wanted to screw Haruko. Or more realistically, it could mean he's gay. He DID turn down Haruko. But, ya know, that's just my interpertation.

It was all a metaphor sort of for growing up. Every character had a flaw of immaturity. Look at the dad (forgot his name... kon right?) he was a pervert, and childish, thus immature; Mamimi had the bad girl complex, thus being immature (note the ciggarettes say Never Knows Best); Ninamori, she was a spoiled brat, accustomed to everything her way, thus immature; Naota, was always trying to act adult/cool, thus making him immature; but Haruko, she was a free spirit and did whatever she wanted.
There's also more symbolism to it, but it's hard to talk about now, I haven't seen the series in a while, I'll probably watch it this weekend if I'm free :D
It's my favorite. It got me into anime. I loved the dub, too, and the sub is also good.

I wasn't that impressed by Paranoia Agent. When it started getting into the unrealistic things especially near the end it just got stupid and went totally overboard past the realm of believability and sanity. Though, I guess that is fairly common among anime? (the going totally crazy overboard, not the stupid) The beginning was very interesting in the way it tied all of the different things together and showed the interactions and personalities of all the people invovled and I watched it to the end because it was on with other things I watched. It isn't something I would go out of my way for.
FLCL is cool though. It doesn't start with a pretense of being normal so by the end of the first episode you already accept that its just wierd and wacky. You can focus on the other things going on (characters and their intereactions, etc).

I love all anime and manga. There's no question about it. I really do. Anyways, I even like the new American manga-styled comics since entertainment is entertainment. I really don't mind anymore when anime or manga is edited in the United States anymore since the facts must be faced. And the facts are that it is necessary to edit anime or manga since more money will come from youngsters that really love it and watch it on TV. And if any of the people that bitch about the anime and manga being edited, if they really loved anime and manga so much, wouldn't they watch it anyways, just to admire the animation? Seriously. People get ridiculous. Well, to get back on track, at the moment my favorite anime/manga may be Fruits Basket and Genshiken. Yup. So that's my input anyways... Indeed.
h2orowe
09-24-2005, 08:14 PM
It's ok if it's edited, as long as the original plot is there :\ you have to remember, someone spent a long time making the story+characters and I'm sure it wasn't so it could be raped by 4kids!
Some edited shows are still good though, most of them are on AdultSwim though :\

There are just some (Some? Fuck! Tons) that I have to grab before they go out of print, possibly never to be licensed again. I've missed some already, Much to my dismay, so I have to concentrate on the older shows if I'm going to get all the ones that are left to me.

I saw an old show today... 94?
Yeah... it was the Ninja Gaiden OVA... it was only like 1 episode, 49 minuites or so long.... it's first half was utter crap, the second half was good though. If you watch it, just skip the first 30 minuites -.-
I also just finished another anime (took me a whole wopping 2 days) called Ultimate Girls. It was awesome, it's pretty funny.... it's ecchi, it's like a parody of Kaiju (monster) animes..... it's like funny if you don't take it serious, 'cuz, well... the show itself doesn't take itself serious either....
I'm getting Jubei-chan... hopefully this show's good.....
Than I'm also getting all the Street Fighter animes! woot. Street Fighter Alpha movie first, than Generations, than the 2 movie, THAN 2v.

You should really watch it! The first 5 minutes has a lot of blood, I guess it's to draw you in.
I dunno if it's been mentioned, but really one of the anime I've enjoyed most is Honey and Clover. It's really random and funny, and had it's boring episodes, but the VAST majority of it was jus amazing. It touched a lot of themes, mostly about growing up, and friendship, just about life really. It was really deep, and I recommend it to everyone.

Huh, I thought I had already posted on this thread before...
Oh well.
When I was little, we used to get every cartoon imaginable here, including ones with funny letters (which I know now to be hiragana, katakana and kanji, hehehe); mainly things like Candy Candy, Sailor Moon -which I hadn't seen until now because I considered it as being only for girls, and watching it was considered to be gay :boggled:-, Saint Seiya (which is known here as Zodiac Knights), Dragon Ball (except for GT, which sucked, IMHO), etc. I didn't even know those were all anime until a friend of mine from Perú (one of the countries in latin america known to have a huge anime/manga influence) told me to download Berusaiyu no Bara (Versailles no Bara, Rose of Versailles or Lady Oscar, whichever you prefer).
Since then, I was hooked.
I've watched -in addition to the ones listed above- Hotaru no Haka, Rurouni Kenshin (OVAs, movie, and all of the TV series), Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijuo, Sakura Diaries, Mahoromatic (both seasons), Card Captor Sakura, Yu-Yu-Hakusho, Evangelion (with Death/Rebirth and End of...), Full Metal Alchemist (haha, I got this one because I saw everyone here mentioning it, and I loved it), Tenjou Tenge (just started downloading it), Sailor Moon (I'm at episode 36, first season right now), Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins... and probably one or two more that I can't remember (I think I've burned over 20 DVDs full of this stuff, downloaded almost all of them through AnimeReactor.)
Anyway, this is mostly "new" anime... I think I'm missing out on watching great series just because of the quality of the animations (I think the oldest one I've watched has to be Lady Oscar, which is from 1980, IIRC.)
Edit: heh, I forgot about this one... Arupusu no Shoujo Haiji, otherwise known as Heidi: Girl of the Alps. We used to make fun of the title song - translated to spanish, of course. This one's from 1974, according to Wikipedia.
Edit 2: @Daie: Ouch.. that happened to me recently with Tenjou Tenge. Since it hasn't been released on AnimeReactor, I just downloaded the first one I found on Emule. It had japanese audio (which is a must for me since I hate dubbing) ...but the subtitles were in French. :bang::meh:
Hmm, I have to buy or download anime, since I don;t get Toonami, or whateverthefuckyacallit.
Hence, my experiance is limited to:
Love Hina (anime + Manga) -the 1st thing I ever saw.
Shaman King, in Japanese, good stuff
Tenchi Muyo+Tenchi in Tokyo- these two may be dubbed, but I prefer them, actually. Ryoko's english voice makes me melt.....
Oh/Ah My Goddess (both)
FLCL- this was interesting, and my initial reaction was What The Fuck?
That's about it really. Can anyone make any recommendations (although I'm going for Ghost in the SHell next.)

I hadn't watched any anime for about a year and a half, so I thought I had finally grown out of it...but then I discovered Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師). That show manages to juggle being bad ass, cute, sad, and heartwarming all at the same time. Definitely going to be a classic.

@kitsunepixie: Good choice! I highly recommend it. I just showed the first epi. to a friend of mine and now I have to burn another DVD for her (since I suffered with my first one... it got scratched and I have to redownload the first 17 episodes...:( 14 to go...) I recommend that you get the OVA (or was it a movie...?) as well, if you haven't seen it already.
