I'll probably be the first to do this, but Bach. Yep, classical. I love Bach's style and I usually listen to it when I write essays. Studies have shown that listening to classical music is good for concentration.

And how can you like instrumental rap? Rap is just talking to a brain dead beat...

That's just lazy rap.
Good rappers have a story to tell, or show you how creative you can get with word play and breaking traditional rhyme patterns/beats.
While not all of it is good, you see some pretty sick poets on stuff like Def Poetry Jam.
But, I pretty much listen to anything that catches my attention, whether it's jazz, rap, country, or Inuit throat singing.

Some people like rap. Not that big of a deal. And some people like listening to the instrumentals. A lot of my friends do as well, but then again some of them actually enjoy random freestyles.
I have to admit I don't like rap though... well most of it. Especially if it contains derogatory comments directed at women or if it promotes violence.
Edit: Daishikaze, I love all those you just listed. Especially Tchaikovsky. One of the greatest. A sad story with him, but his music was amazingly moving.
I'm glad you like this stuff.

I actually like some of Tupac's stuff... Yeah if I enjoy anything, it's old school. It wasn't exactly as corrupt back then. Now it's the same damn story... kill some enemies and pick up loose women.
Maybe I'm just too old school sometimes, I dunno. And as far as rap instrumentations, I don't mind listening to anything with an easy, detectable beat. It can calm me down. Of course that's why I would listen to it if I had to.

Heh, I like getting into arguements over music with people. As I've come to figure out, there's alot of the same stereotypes that go along with the music someone listens to. Like Nu-Metal heads are pompous pricks that think they're the shit. Emo fans (Shitty Emo like the Slit my wrist and Black my eye shit) think they're cool because they're different. Alot of the new rap kids think they're tough because they listen to gangsta shit, and think like Tupac was the smartest person ever, but would rather listen to the new Lil' Jon club remix than Tupac.
I listen to alot of stuff. Mostly "Love-Emo" as I call it, haha, it's like Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, and stuff like that. Indie like Sparta, Recover, I don't really know if they're indie or not but are The Mar's Volta indie? I don't know, I've been listening to them since before they got big, like when Deloused first came out.
I was into Hardcore and stuff in the 5th-7th grade. It used to be good, but now everybody's into it. It's annoying. ATREYU ROCKS MY SOCKS. I hate Atreyu so much. They have their stupid fads and stuff. SXE, and like they put Hardcore like HXC. I'm 15 now but like my brother brought me up with a good oppinion on music. I'll listen to anything pretty much, but I'll judge it and shit, but I won't not hang out with anyone due to their taste in music, I just joke with them and bag on them for it, most of the time they think I'm serious.
I like some reggae and stuff. The only ones I know like alot about is Sublime and Bob Marley. I like Toot's and the Maytals, and some stuff I've heard on the Reggae channel.
I like some older metal, like Black Sabbath, Old Metallica, and Old Slayer.
My favorite (not Favorite, but most listened to) bands At the moment are probably
the pillows
Jimmy Eat World
Weezer
Sparta
Recover
Head Automatica
and
The Mars Volta

One thing I don't get about the indie music scene (I love a lot of indie bands, so don't get me wrong): why do people automatically hate an indie band when they make it big? As long as their music doesn't change, who cares if everyone else is listening to it now?

I don't know why either.
TMV is hitting it big, but it sucks so bad. SUCKS SO BAD, because they're touring with shitty fucking SOAD. Now they'll have the totally wrong fanbase. Stupid fucking Nu-Metal heads will be listening to them. ERR! It pisses me off. Now if I mention TMV, people will be like "Oh I like them, They're like SOAD.". Good rappers to be.
Ludacris = able to rap using multiple words in a flow
Kanye West = raps about the controversy in life and religion
Missy Elliot = being the dominant female rapper out there
Eminem = breaking the barrier from the black-dominant rap industry
OutKast (Big Boi) = Funky tunes and all
Black Eyed Peas = They have the ElePhunk, they do Monkey Business, and what else? Doggy Style!

Rock, used as a very broad term/genre to encompass all forms of Rock and Rock 'n' Roll, is my favorite genre. Although lately it has been plagued. By the various Crap-Rock genres(as I've dubbed them), such as Emo, Indie, Pop, J, new Alt., and new Punk.
I use "new" for some of those genres to express that these genres used to be good, but now pump out little but crap.

Mash-ups are where it's at. No, not that Jay-Z/Linkin Park BS. Not even The Grey Album by DangerMouse. Since everyone has the internet here, I'll let you find out the joy of The Beastles, the gaudy fun of Copacabreaka, and the sheer wrongness of things like Hollaback Girl/Constant Sorrow and Bad is In the Heart...
It's a genre with no boundaries. You can be listening to Stevie Wonder over the Clash, and then go to Will Smith over NIN. The amalgamation is beautiful.

Vocab, man, How old are you that you think Eminem was the barrier breaker?
Sure, there are castaways like Snow, and Vanilla Ice, but there's also 3rd Bass, House of Pain... Em wasn't by any means the first.
Rap, by and large, has been ruined by bling rap, krunk club crap, and thug rap. Case in point: Mike Jones. He should have NEVER come close to getting a record deal. Seriously.
Other genres have been overrun by corporate crap. The Offsprings, Blink 182's and Good Charlottes, if I may point fingers at a few. Good Charlotte has to be the most "tough" looking band to have a primary fan base of screaming 14 year old GIRLS.
Alternative/NuMetal is just as bad. If it isn't tuned to Drop D and distorted to all hell, then it's simply the same power chord formula, over and over again. Bands are interchangeable. I can't tell the difference from Mudvayne to Slipknot, to Puddle of Mudd, and whatnot. The originators had a SOUND. You could tell the difference between Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.
Oddly enough, the only hard music worth listening to is coming from a genre that is known for being way too numb to be able to generate the good stuff. "Emo" bands like My Chemical Romance, and The Mars Volta (formed from emo kids At The Drive-In) kick a lot of ass. Too much to not have crossover potential.

I like a little bit of everything. I'm a big fan of good rappers (Talib Kweli, The Roots and all those that normally get mentioned in this). I also like old school, if only because it helps me nostalge (yes, that's a word ;) ). I'm also a fan of good R&B (Luther Vandross, Lighthouse Family, some R. Kellly and the man himself, Stevie Wonder). I'm a huge fan of jazz and blues. I won't even begin to go into what artists I like because the list is way too long. I like some rock. J-Pop and anime themes also are big on my list. So is some of the older pop. Oh, and dance music too. I'm a fan of some reggae and nearly all calypso. And new wave. Man, I miss the 80's.
I swear, my iTunes playlist is the most eclectic thing I have ever seen in my life. :D
Now, a quick question: why is it that whenever someone holds these music conversations almost everybody lists some form of rock? I'm not knocking the style, I'm just wondering why it seems that you all don't even bother to try other music. Good music is so deep and there's so much to explore that it's a shame to limit yourself to one genre. There's so much you wind up missing out on.

You're being too analytical. If someone says that they like rock, it doesn't mean that they are denouncing all other genres. Many people who enjoy rock also enjoy a huge selection of music. I'm one of those people. Rock may be my favorite genre, as I said, but I also like jazz, blues, classical, big band, various forms of metal, some hip-hop, some trip-hop, pretty much every club/dance genre, and much more. I just mentioned rock because it's the best, especially classic hard rock. :D

Count me among one of those people who listens to rock and other genres! I love myself some old-school indie rock (I guess "old-school indie rock" is the term? I'm more They Might Be Giants and Beck than, say, Bloc Party and the Killers), but I am the first to defend rap music and country music in any conversation about musical genres.
Listen to John Prine or even Johnny Cash before you even think of bashing country music, I say. It's not all Leann Rimes and Tim McGraw out there! Don't judge a genre by its Top 40.
And rap... Has been discussed quite thorougly so far, I must say, although I can't help but bring up the up-and-coming nerdcore hip-hop genre (mc chris, MC Frontalot, etc) and how totally awesome it is.

i listen to Hiphop. most rap sucks.
now try and figure that out.
I listen to pretty much every type of music. Even, dare I say it, country. Some of that country just hits you right in the heart.
As for live shows, I live in Austin Texas the live music capitol of the world. I think one of the most consistent bands quality wise that I like is Dave Mathews Band. (As long as you don't get annoyed by the tons of pot.) Some of the local bands you guys proably never heard of are decent. I loved the Killers when I saw them a year two back. Their have also been bands that just sucked! But all in all live shows are awesome if the band is high energy. :)
Classical is where it's at, people. YOU GOTTA KNOW YOUR ROOTS.
MY roots come from Negro blues that used to be played back in the 1800s/early 1900s. I bet you didn't know the first "hard rock" theme was actually taken from a blues song that the Negros invented.
And from there music just got bastardised further and further until death metal, and bands with names like Decapitated and Cancer and Carcass and Dismember.
I'm just gonna jump in and share with all of you that I'm a huge Skinny Puppy fan. If you weren't alive in the 80's, you probably know nothing of them, but they rock hardcore. I saw them in Toronto last November and it was the most amazing live show that has ever been done, I think. If anyone would like to see what I mean, Skinny Puppy is releasing a dvd with the entire Toronto show on it (it will probably include my mug in there somewhere) in September.

The blues are given way way too much credit.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if someone came along and told me that classical music started because of the blues. We might as well just give it credit for everything.
Don't get me wrong though. I love the blues, but the fact is that hard rock evolved from rock, not the blues. It's true that certain aspects of the blues were used when rock 'n' roll was created, which eventually became rock, which eventually spawed hard rock, but it's not like these genres wouldn't exist without the blues.
It has aspects in many genres, but it's not the "end all/start all" that many people think it is.

Where do you think ROCK evolved from?
Err....I already covered that in my last post. Well, the blues aspect of it anyways.
Rock 'n' Roll came about thanks in part to certain aspects of the blues, but more in part to the younger generation of the 40's and 50's wanting and creating a sound/style of their own. Rock 'n' Roll eventually became rock. That's were rock came from. Like I said before, blues helped, and it's a good genre, but the rock genres would exist without it. They might be a bit different without the blues, and they might not have. That part really can't be said for sure.

I can get into almost any type of music, but I can't actually follow every band or performer I hear. I only like certain things here and there usually. I'm more about the music and less about the artist. Only a few have gained my dedicated devotion, and most of it is rock or classical.

I don't see why the popularity and social rank of schools are mostly based on the music people listen to.
I mean, it's ridiculous. The extremely popular people are the ones who listen to rap (death to MTV), the second are the people who listen to hip-hop and R&B, and, you know, they're the ones who're known about the popular but usually are the funny ones (I'm in that category, hehe!), the ones below that are rockers (rock on, lower-class friends!), and below them are usually the goth, the nerds/geeks/computer hackers, and (mostly in my school), people who listen to foreign music (mostly Chinese, and, by the Wapanese kids, Japanese music from anime and such).
I think people should hang out with others not by what music they're associated with, but noly for their personality. Me, I've done that. I made friends with a couple of rockers, a bunch of second-class people, but none about the rappers.
Heh. I'm stupid all of sudden since I listen to both Ludacris and the Pillows.
"Dude, you shuldn't hang out with us since you think 50 Cent is just a giant blubbering vagina and you never sport his own clothing line, unlike us popular people."

I dont think that anyone here can win against my dad...
He has over 22,000 songs on his computer and around 400-500 artists... hell he has hard-drives named "A-E" then "F-J" etc.
I myself only have a miniscule 4,200 songs on my pc ¬_¬

Someone here likes ACDC.
On that note, they are great. I prefer Highway to Hell, though. That and Thunderstruck.

After my mom turned what should have been a 14 minute drive into a 2 hour 45 minute journey, High Way to Hell is her theme whenever she gets on the 405 (freeway that she tookt he wrong turn on and the one we ended back on...repeatedly *twitch*) And yes, both songs are pretty cool. I'm not overly obsessed with AC/DC. It just happens to be what was on my computer at the time.

Sorry, I am not reading any of the posts that list huge amounts of artists. But now that I look, I see you did. Awesome.
What's your favorite song?

Far too many. Though, if I had to pick one right now, I'd say "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)." It's just something about that main riff.

I mostly have mp3s but if I like the band/singer enough, I'll buy their cds.
The Verve, The Beta Band, Pulp, Unbelievable Truth, Spiritiualized, Clinic, Mercury Rev, Super Furry Animals, The Standard, Abandoned Pools, Foreigner, Steppenwolf, KISS, Bad Company, The Cult, Judas Priest, Deftones, White Stripes, Interpol, Rage Against The Machine, Jimmy Eat World, Modest Mouse, The Cure, Nancy Sinatra, Nirvana, Converge, Rob Zombie, The Who, The Used, Snow Patrol, Iced Earth, Led Zepplin, Tears for Fear, Stone Temple Pilots, The Walkman, Metallica, Muse, MegaDeth, The Doors, Stone Roses, Death Cab For Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Queen, Pearl Jam, The Killers, Rammstein, Billy Idol, Twisted Sister, The Darkness, Opeth, The Offsprings, System of a Down, The Hives, Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Radiohead, Green Day, Coldplay, Incubus, In Flames, Soundgarden, Beastie Boys, Death On Wenesday, The Ordinary Boys, Gene, Momus, McLusky, Longpigs, Idlewild, The Strokes, Manic Street Preachers, The Trash Can Sinatras, Doves, The Smiths, Oasis, The Arcade Fire, and Legendary Loose Screws. I also enjoy John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Mark Snow, and Bill Lynas music. Especially the work they've done on numerous tv shows and movies.
I listen to a lot of different genres, but my favorite band is 311. They're a hybred (Hybrid?) band, mixing Rock, Funk, Rap, Reggae, and some other stuff. They're new record hit stores Tuesday infact. I recently saw them in Chicago, amazing live performers. Check them out, they rule. Word of warning though, each record sounds different. Grassroots and Transistor are good. Don't Tread on Me, the most recent, is a hard rocker. Soundsystem rocks overall. Music is a good album too. 311 (The Blue Album, Self-titled) isn't the best, but it's still better than 95% of the music out there, same for From Chaos and Evolver.
I'm a 311 nerd if you couldn't tell.
Besides them, Dream Theater, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Marley, Green Day occasionally, and Rammstien are all getting play in my cd player, along with a lot of others.
Flogging Molly = Best Live Show Ever. They are awsome live. The energy from both the band and the crowd are insane.
I seriously beg to differ. Is it actually a show, or just them playing with plenty of energy?
Personally, the top three bands I've found to actually put on an excellent live show are:
1. Skinny Puppy
2. Ministry
3. Rammstein (though I really don't like them, they do some pretty awesome stuff)
You don't believe me? Get the new Puppy dvd coming out this September.

As far as I'm concerned, a good show is just seeing an artist put their heart and soul into their music while onstage, and performing at their best.
The rest is just there to hold the attention of the idiots who enjoy watching paint dry, because really, nothing compares to the music.
Besides, no band has anything on Gwar in terms of gimmicks.
I don't know, Citizen. Consider Kiss...
