View Full Version : First day of school... damn...

Well, today was my first day of school. Yea, Monday, you can tell it's bad already. I'm a senior in high school, so that's not all bad, right? Well, let's look at how my day started:
Around 6:00AM- Clock went off. Took me 15 minutes to find it (I was real tired and I couldn't follow the sound).
About 6:30AM- Breakfast.
7:00- Threw on my uniform (I go to a crappy private school) and brushed my teeth.
7:10- Got out to the car and left for school.
7:35- Got to school early.
7:50-8:00AM- Test in my first hour on one of my summer reading books (Frankenstein).
8:40/8:45- Second hour, Architectural Design, slow and uneventful.
Now, so far, it wasn't all that bad. I'll skip ahead a few hours. To fourth period we go.
Approx. 10:30AM- American Government... I find out the book that was sold to me is the wrong edition and no one is told. I probably have to throw away more money to the money grubbing school of mine to get the new book I'm sure. Also, there aren't many people in that class that I like.
About 11:30AM- Photography. That ain't bad. I had to hand roll my own film, but there's one problem... which I'll get into later.
12:30PM- Lunch. Couldn't get into the cafeteria, stuck outside in the heat. But that is considerably better than my next class...
1:00PM- Environment Science. Why the hell is it, every goddam year I take a science, I get stuck with people I hate with an absolute passion? There is not a single person in there I like and I can already tell the class is gonna suck. I hope I can move it to another period (as long as my schedule isn't disrupted terribly).
2:00PM- Attempted to leave early since I don't have a class and I'm supposed to be allowed. Well that was proven wrong when the guard told me I had to get an exit pass. Luckily, my dad was there, so he told him he had to go to work and he had to pick me up early. I gotta get that sorted tomorrow, along with the book problem that I mentioned earlier.
Couple hours later, now... There's a problem with the film I rolled... It didn't load. Crap. This just isn't my day, so now I gotta try again. GUess that isn't so bad.
Yeah, so my first day back to that hell hole called a school and I got a few problems I need fixed ASAP. Oh, but there's worse, I found out that my school IS offering a Graphic Design 2 class and I wasn't told (considering I kept asking and calling). God, I hate my school. Rant over, sorry about that. I just felt like I needed to vent that out.

I so hope I don't have a test over Anna Karenina or Mouliere Tartuffe the first day! *pray*

Glad to see I wasnt the only one with a first day of school today.
For Monadys, Wednesdays and Fridays my school day is only 150 minutes long (haha pwnt) and Tuesdays and Thrusdays my school day is only 90 minutes long. But in the end it still sucks because although it is only the first day I totally underestimated the difficulty of college.
Check this. I got a 12 page report due in like 2 weeks and a 6 page one due like in 4 days. To all the people in college right now probably are used to this but I am not. After the first day you realize how easy High School is.

I love when the freshman file in trying to fit into high school when you don't even have to like you did in middle school. They just end up being annoying pricks who want to show how cool they are by doing random stupid things & taking it all way to seriously.
I love to see the little freshman when they take a tour of the high school. I like picking out one of the kids & saying hey <insert name>. Sometimes they are surprised that I know their name forgetting that they're wearing a name tag! :D
One time though I saw this amazingly cute girl that I thought was a Junior only to find out she was a freshman. Felt like a perv for the entire next period. *smilie with blank stare & half smile*
I thought it would be so cool to be a senior when I was freshman-sophomore. Now I just want to go to uni. :p

yeah freshmen are sooo fricken ghey.
The "coolest" freshman only ammounts to like the average sophmore. Freshman actually run to class, HHAHAHA WTF!?! And they put like everything they have in their backpack. My backpack was just one Mead pack of paper and a pencil, it was so thin. Freshman also laug at the most stupidest shit it was so annoying when I had to take a mixed class.

Could someone clarify the American school system for me? What ages are middle chool and high school? What is a sophomore/freshman? I've never quite known how to compare the school system to britains.

Grades 1-5 (sometimes 1-6): Elementary School
Grades 6/7-8: Middle School:
Grades 9-12: High School
Freshman = 9th grade
Sophmore = 10th grade
Junior = 11th grade
Senior = 12th grade
(College also has the same nomenclature for all 4 years.)

Beh, I'll be a junior in High School starting in September. For some reason I signed up for both AP Biology (I always get pitying looks when I mention this) and Physics, even though I'm not terribly good in science and neither is required.
I don't know why, and I'll probably end up dropping one of them.
The only thing I'm looking forward to is the "new and improved" cafeteria food. We had to eat some scary stuff last year.

They over charge for shit on a tray. The pizza is always really low quality with no sauce too because they don't care as it is going to school. One lunch can cost 3+ dollars which won't fill you up forcing you to spend in excess of 5 dollars. What is up with that bs?

I have some pretty decent classes, but there is a 500 pound freshman that is coming this year (no joke) who likes me, and if she comes near me I fear that her fat will drown my friends and I or something..

I guess I SHOULD enjoy it while it lasts... but the people at my school don't really make it that much easier for me. Most of the students at my school (which is EXPENSIVE AS HELL) do nothing but goof off and skip class; and they wonder why they're failing... I'm not saying it's ALL bad, I know some pretty nice kids (you know, the intelligent, courteous ones that do their work and don't disrupt the class), but still, the school is too flooded with stupid people and generally bad kids. Doesn't help that my school allows people that they expelled one year ago to come back the next. What the hell is that? I guess as long as they pay good money, they don't give a damn.
Boy, I'm gonna have fun with a newspaper article I plan to submit to a local paper after I graduate hehehe.

We start on the 29th...I'm definitely not looking forward to it. I'm going to be a junior..woo... I get up between 6:45-7:15, get to school around 8:15..and 1st hour starts at 8:30. This year my school decided to be real cool and take study-hall away from us, make all the classes longer (to compensate for no study hall), and bump lunch back an hour...so instead of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th hours...lunch at 12:15... we'll go through 5th hour then lunch...1 something...don't really know exactly as times are all changing...if that made any sense. ..Ah well..I don't like change :p
i miss highschool....so many classes so many people so many chances to just make an interesting life for yourself. I'd love to live it again. :P
I think this time i'd probably also try in my classes, well...no nvm. But i' would have gave more thought into what I'd like to do. I probably just would have tried to make more/new types of friends and speak to more girls.
ya...that's probably it.

Hell, my school started last week (August 8th). It usually starts on the 4th or 3rd, but they changed it. In fact, the Legislature is trying to make it so that we can't start school after Labor Day. These are the same people who can't decide how to pay for new textbooks which means that I have no books to read in except in 2 classes. They are also the same people who make us pledge to the Texas flag. ...WHAT THE HELL?!

I've know these people since the seventh fucking grade (my school is a private school and it covers all grades). Trust me. They're just not people I want to be around. I mean, there's some good people, like I said, but there's just not enough of 'em. I've already told you why I don't like these people, so you get the idea. And besides, I'm partly bitter since most of my best friends graduated last year.

What in the hell are you all doing starting school in the middle of the goddamned year? North American whack jobs, the lot of you.
School here goes from 8.40-3.20 (well, really 9.20-3.20 if you don't go to the 40 minutes of assembly/school singing/house meetings/deans meetings/sports meetings/peer support they schedule every morning). It's a 10 minute walk/5 minute run over to the next hill to school. Ergo, I can wake up at about 9 am most days. Ah, what fun. We have 5 periods a day, with interval and lunch time breaks. I have at least one study period a day, usually two, but I have to use those to go do a correspondence first year uni paper on philosophy. Damn them all.
Do American schools have different times for people to have lunch? That seems odd. We are one of the biggest schools in the area, with 850 or so girls. Fugly uniforms for all, but year 13s get to wear mufti. Who the hell decided that women need to be wearing ties? With a kilt? Damn them all.
We have 6 classroom blocks on 2 sides of a busy road. Freaking idiots who designed it. We have a tunnel under the road to join up the sides. Go figure. Approximately 10,000 stairs in all of the school grounds. We had to work it out for maths once. Something else I wondered about is do you have schools entirely within one building? Most of what I know about American schools I get from Saved by the Bell, mind you (the original, none of that new class crap).
And a cafeteria? Omg. We have a tuck shop. If you are first in line, you might get something hot like wedges cooked in the 40 year old oven. Otherwise there are fizzy drinks, chips, and other shit. Easier to go to the dairy down the bottom of the hill.
Um. Well. I'm curious about your schooling experiences up there. And I ramble. Surprisingly little bitching considering how much I hate that fucking place. http://www.nghs.school.nz can burn in hell.
And good luck back at school, y'all :D

Let me fill you guys in a little bit on reality once you get in college.
One, this 8am waking up stuff you do in highschool is gone, erased in college. Your ability to get up that early in the morning and be coherent is gone until you graduate. Don't as me why, this is just the way it works.
The University does not give a shit about you. Trust me on this. You are one face among thousands. If you want allies, once you get into your particular College within your Uni, make friends with the College admins - you will see them a lot more often, and they will go to bat for you.
I'm going to say this, you will ignore me but oh well. DON'T PROCRASTINATE. You may think college is a bit strange because you spend far less time in class than you did in highschool. THAT'S BECAUSE THERE'S 3x AS MUCH WORK TO DO ON YOUR OWN. Develop the ability to stay awake for 24 or more hours. It will help.
There's more, but that's all I want to write for now.

Listen to Chornosphere. He has it all correct!
I got to leave in like 40 minutes for what would technically still be my first day of school (I had 3 classes yesterday but today I have 1. 1 that I didnt take yet).
I can tell I'm already behind because I didn't buy my fucking books yet. How can you behind after only one day you ask? Because you have to read a shitload pretty much everynight and there will be a quiz probably every other school day. Man it sucks.
Also, I can already tell none of your teachers give a shit about you really. Their just there to do their job nothing more. They don't want to be your best bud back in high school they just want to teach and get paid.
All I have to say to people who have to go to school is this:

Chronosphere: Excellent. It's even true for some Community College classes; of which mine starts next week.
That, and the interview where next year, I'm signing up to get a degree in cooking. They only let in 36 students per semester, so I'm crossing my fingers.
School...hah.
When you're a kid the only bright part is getting to know/mess around with other kids. The work is generally pointless. In highschool I was considered "smart", but was lazy enough to let my GPA drop. Teachers in highschool really feel no better than the ones I have now. They tell you the academic crud, then leave you be.
Exceptionally the art teachers could relate to the students; I had a kick-ass drawing teacher who knew ninjutsu...and was vegetarian :)

Something else I wondered about is do you have schools entirely within one building?
I think school starts around this time of the year because we were an agrarian society and school would start once kids were done helping their family with the farming during the summer.
As far as lunch times go, it depends on the school. My high school had 1300 students and 3 lunch periods between 11-12:30 so that everyone would have time to eat. Some high schools in the US have up to 5000 students, though most fall in the 800-2200 range I believe. The school I teach at has around 550 students in grades 7-12. The 7th and 8th graders each have their own lunch and the high schoolers have a lunch period after that.
I believe that most high schools are entirely within 1 building, but it is fairly common for students to go to another school for 1 or 2 classes that may not be offered in their building. We have a consortium agreement with neighboring districts. They will send drafting students to us and we'll send students to them for various other classes that we don't offer because of our small size.
Our school day runs from 8:15-3:00. There has been some talk of starting the school day earlier, but I hope they don't. I am so not a morning person. Teachers have to report on Aug. 25th and Aug 29th for inservice days (bo-oring) and students start on Aug. 30th.

I can't even imagine going to school with that many people..that's more than twice the amount of people in my town. There are about 200 people in my highschool...small, I know. Middle school & highschool all have lunch at the same time, everyone can fit in the cafeteria if need be.

Yeah, we do the same. Kids in their junior & senior years can also go up to a trade school type-thing for part of the day and get their credits that way. That's mainly if they know what they want to do after school and if a program for it is offered at the schools. My high school and the one closest to us also do alot of co-op programs with sports...like wrestling, tennis and cross-country running.

When I was in High School, school started at 7am so I had to leave my house at 6:30am which means I had to get up at 4am to take a shower and get ready for school. Yay.
We had 7 periods and 4 minutes in between each class to go to our lockers and basically FLY to our next class to get there on time :S:S:S
We had 25 minutes for lunch. There were 3 lunch periods a day, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If you took English, foreign language, social studies (psychology, IPR, etc) during 5th period, you had 1st lunch... If you had a math class or a science class during 5th period, you had 2nd lunch which meant that you were in 5th period for half of class, went to lunch, and came back to 5th period, and 3rd lunch was all of the home ec. history, music, etc. classes.
2nd lunch was best because you didn't have to go to your locker before lunch which means you had more time to eat :P
School ended at 3:15 but it takes about 20 minutes to get out of the parking lot because of traffic, so all together you got home around 4...
School started late August and ended mid May, but you could pay extra to take classes during the summer, so you could graduate early or get college credits... My parents ALWAYS made me take classes in June, and then for 3 summers I went to Japan and went to school in July, and August except for my sophmore year when I was in Japan all summer. Stupid lazy Americans right?
I kindof like the American school system, it starts when summer is winding down, which means you don't have to go to school in blinding, raw heat... 3 weeks for christmas break, one for spring and one for fall... I dunno... I like it...
Thats my take anyway.
Your school system sucks, Neko.
Woke up at 7:30am to get to school by 8:15am (which in itself is fucking stupid-early), 8 periods of 40 minutes a day (or so I recall), 25 minutes for a break in the morning, 40 minutes for lunch.
All that and we all still complained. :D
hmm college I think is easy.
First off, don't think you're a big genius and take on 16+ credits when you slacked off in high school....that's just one of the funniest things to watch. I have a friend who took an entire year off after highschool, now he wants to attempt 36+ credits in one year....
Not a problem but then when those people try to tell you college is hard....*pinch of salt*
Also, yeah it's true it's very easy to fall behind..but it's also pretty easy to keep up. The only really hard part about college is you don't have a teacher holding your hand through it all. If you do things on your own evry little bit here and there it's actually not that much. They never require you to do an insane ammount of work. It just seems that way on the outside.
When you break down big page papers they're actually pretty small. And plenty of time is given, people just wait until the last minute and then complain it's too much.
Now i was a big slacker in highschool, and even so in college if it's a class i don't like; but you'll never see me complain it's too hard if the problem is my own lazy butt.
but yeah, i'm doing 14 credits and I only go to school 3 days a week. 6 hours worth of class in those 3 days. That's already 2 less days of class time I would have had to sit through if I was in highschool. 12 hours i'm getting out of. What do you think would happen if i spent those 12 hours oh....working?
Exactly :P
I dunno, mabye my advice differes. Yes it's true no one cares about you but who's to say that's a bad thing? You're not TOLD what to do, you do it yourself, you do what you want. I think people that hated highschool for the same reasons i did, are the ones that enjoy the freedom of college.
I enjoy the get in take your classes, leave and have a live vs. "you must sit here and waist 7 hours of your day, 5 days a week, when we could teach you this stuff over 2-3 days. Think about how much time you waisted in highschool. Think about how much time your teachers waisted and how little you learned in some classes. If they would have just got to the point, You honeslty would have just alot more time with your friends.
Ah i'm rambling, I will stop.

and lots of other interesting stuff cut for space considerations
I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. I didn't mind high school that much and I worked pretty hard, but it was mostly pretty easy for me. I liked college quite a bit more, especially with the greater amount of freedom you have in determining your schedule. I took between 15-19 credit hours each term plus a few classes during the spring and summer terms. I had to take at least 15 credits to keep my scholarship. One semester, I had classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 8-12 and 1-3:30 plus a Tuesday night class from 6:30-9. Having to go to classes only two days a week was great, especially since I worked 3-4 days each week as well.
At my high school (and others as well) a lot of our time is wasted with students who don't particularly want to be there. I wish we could speed things up in my classroom at times, but there are a lot of students who don't do their homework, read the lesson or whatever and it slows things down. College is kind of sink or swim. I've seen a number of students who were slackers in high school drop out of college after 1 or 2 semesters. Some go back, some don't. I've seen others, though, who expanded their horizons in college, started working hard and were successful. I think a lot of it is up to the individual.
Most of the professors in college had limited availability for help, unlike in many high schools where teachers may be willing to come in before or stay after school. You have to learn it on your own or with a study group.
I was probably at my most diligent my first semester of college until the high school attitude wore off a bit. I still got my work done after that, but started playing a lot more euchre, playing basketball at the rec center, and having fun on the days I wasn't working. It was kind of funny, though, watching people in the dorm who had procrastinated on those huge papers until the last second. You wouldn't see me staying up all night working on papers (like my brother did when he was in college). No sir. I made sure to get at least 1-2 hours of sleep.

I really miss the freedom of highschool... I did whatever I wanted, whenever, had an awesome girlfriend, insane amounts of sex, a nice car, and at least a concert a week to go see.
Gas, food, clothes, everything paid for by parents.
At the time I got upset over some pretty petty things but really had a great time overall, now that I've hit the "real world" I really do miss highschool, and find myself thinking of it often.
I am looking forward to college, but I can't go for about another 3 years which sucks, but it will be really great when I get there!
(already used to staying up for days on end so I will undoubtedly get more sleep in college, even if I'm taking crazy amounts of class)

Oh yeah? My school's got about six of 'em (including elemntary and cafeteria). All of my classes this year are usually on one side of the campus, between two buildings, but then I gotta trek all the way to the OTHER side (in the goddam Florida heat on top of that) after lunch to get ot my last class. That isn't so bad since eat lunch down there, but then I gotta walk all the way back to the parking lot on the other side to get to my locker and then my car to leave. Try toppin' that.

Uhm. Walking to and from school which is about an hour to get there, and another hour to get back. And. My classes spread roughly between the three buildings. It goes something like this.
Main building
Annex
Main building
Olin building
Annex
Olin building
Main building.
It sucks so bad. I walk to one building and after the class I go back to the previous one. >>;

I start school tomorrow. :(
But man, you're school starts early! Last bell for first period at my school is 8:49. I'm a senior too and get to miss the last period. I only have 3 classes a day. :D I wake up at 7:45! But after school I will be volunteering at a hospital soo it's going to be like a norm. school day.
I so hope I don't have a test over Anna Karenina or Mouliere Tartuffe the first day! *pray*
I share your hopes. By the way it is Moliere and not Mouliere. Yes I'm in a fussy mode.
