I have got to wonder about how you live. I imagine that most of you do not plan on staying in the country you are teaching in forever, so I have to wonder about your lifestyle. I can imagine it is similiar to life in the military where you pretty much get only the bare essentials because when you finally get shipped out you want to be able to easily bring your belongings with. I mean do you buy TV's, sofas and other hard to ship items or is it that whenever a foreign teacher leaves there is a huge auction of all their crap?

See, for example, Tokyo Notice Board. A giant publication for gaijin getting rid of stuff- "sayonara sales" are those in which a family is getting rid of everything- some stuff they'll give away free with a purchase. My friend just bought an awesome huge TV and satellite system for 20,000 yen (under $200 bucks).

I got my bike from someone leaving Japan. There are also "recycle" shops where you can buy used furniture and appliances at pretty reasonable prices.

Japanese abhor anything "used" so it's usually gaijin-to-gaijin sales...
