It has savannah and lions and stuff which makes it pretty neat. Also provides lazy westerners with the better part of Animal Planet.

Too bad the civilised part of the continent as a whole is pretty poor. Especially the middle/lower part.

Personally, I think it's a hot place that lacks
effective government.... and has too many wars.
(Not Nigeria, but Congo is quite a mess).

I think of Africa as a continent with one of the most beautifull landscapes on earth, but with great differences between people. Some people are filthy rich, but most are very poor. Large portions of Africa ar torn by war, a lot of Africans grew up with violence and opression. I hope that Africa will receive the peace and prosperity it deserves after hundreds of years of abuse by other people causing apartheid and taking people as slaves to other continents.

I think Africa is a place that needs a lot of help. Between inner fighting, droughts, slavery and a whole other bunch of issues, the continent as a whole took a huge hit that it hasn't recovered from yet. You just can't up and help yourself out of such a crappy situation.

The problem is that many people seem to be treating Africa like a country as opposed to a continent. The phrase "I'm sending aid to Africa," to me, is kind of a useless statement. Africa is huge. Africa has a lot of countries in it. You can not "aid Africa" because either you're spending far too small of an amount of resources or you're trying to spread a lot of resources over a wide amount of countries, thereby making the resources basically small and useless.

If you're going to aid, then try and help one country at a time. I honestly feel like a lot of these civil wars are the product of the civilians in each country not having anything better going for them, as horrible as it sounds. Aid one country at a time, and over a period of years you can actually start making widespread change. Keep sending help to Africa, and you're just throwing money at a black hole.

Well, I'm black, so in order to be in the KKK I would also have to be blind. Like that Dave Chappelle skit... ;)

Truthfully, when ever I hear Africa, the first thought that comes up to my head is AIDS, then the poor conditions it's in. Sad, but the world as a whole is unwilling to REALLY do anything about it. It's pretty sad when you can say that it seems like they'd be better off if they were still imperial colonies.

I think that most people don't know how to deal with Africa. So we have dumbasses like Bono saying we should forgive their debt all all other crazy crap. I think the only way to fix the problems there is to reorganize all the governments. When AIDS is killing millions of people there, when there is factions that are on a mission of genocide, and when the governments don't seem to be doing anything about it just throwing money at it won't fix anything.

If they really want to change the sitaution there, they (UN, America, whoever) will have to do an Iraq times 50. However, most people are content with sending their $5 a month and thinking they are saving the continent.

People keep on thinking of Africa as backwards and warlike. That's only because the most reported parts of africa are the northern areas where all the wars and famines are going on.

If you go to southern africa however it's a completely different story.

Africa's huge. It really is rather silly think of it as one single entity. You might as well say, what do you think of Europe or Asia?

I guess the thing I like most about Africa are the animals. But I've always been interested in that type of stuff.

It's true, though... Southern Africa has a much better quality of life than North Africa. Of course, all the publicity goes to North Africa so that is why the continent is viewed as dirty and ridden with poverty.

oh hell, i read the title and was like !! potential to turn ugly :P.

Hmmm...my only problem with peoples' views of africa is because of media mostly(and ignorance some), the first image is usually things like lions, trees, jungle...not signs of civilization and cities, that are for the most part normal.

Alot of people don't think of city life with everyday things like cars, roads, big buildings, etc. Which sucks :P. I guess you could say there's alot of poor areas in comparison but still, as an African/black person it kind of sucks that when you tell people you're from Africa, they are probably thinking of lions and jungles n such. Not for example, the Capital of Ethopia where your family had 2 houses, 4 cars, and lead a pretty normal life.

~Ah, nothing's perfect I guess~

I know what you mean. Although another thing that interests me about the country is the state of life in Northern Africa and how it can be improved. I hate thinking what they have to go through to survive...

And I don't automatically think of animals and jungles when I think of Africa... I just really like animals. I love animals in America, Asia, the oceans, anywhere. Just that Africa is interesting since it houses some huge creatures, and it's not like that anywhere else.

Most of the world doesn't think of Africa. Sad but true. The other JET in my town was from South Africa, and always confused the dickens out of the Japanese.

"Where are you from?"
"South Africa."
"You mean South America?"
"No, I mean South Africa."
"But you aren't Black!"

While I realize that there are large swaths of unused land in Africa, and that there are plenty of folks who live outside 'civilization' in the Western sense (concrete jungles filled with cars), I also know that just 'bout every country has one or two relatively 'civilized' (in the Western sense) cities, rather than being filled from end to end with topless women who live in grass huts.

Personally when I think of Nigeria, I think of a country in the middle/southish part of Western Africa, because I needed to learn as much for a 5th grade Geography test. Beyond that, I really don't need to think of Nigeria. I know, for instance, that Bobby Ologon of Japanese TV fame is from Nigeria, and is one of 31(!) brothers and sisters. I think that there is a reasonably large oil industry in Nigeria, which tends to be exploitative of workers, and resulted in some form of violent revolt or somesuch by said workers a couple years back, though I could be wrong.

Personally I think that Africa will get better once the people decide to start working towards improving their own countries individually, and creating trade between the countries around each other. They have resources up the wazoo, but very few stable economies to make investment incredibly worthwhile. North Africa (Tunisia, northern Algeria) and South Africa seem to be the only places thinking of joining the rest of the world in the 20th, let alone 21st centuries...

When most ppl I know of think of Africa, they:

1. Don't think about seperate countries
2. Don't think about prior colonization really fucked shit up
3. Think AIDS Central
4. Think Genocide
5. Think "What's a Dafur?"
6. Think there's nothing but desert, animals, and mud huts
7. Do not want to ever visit.
8. Do not think about it at all.

I can't count the number of times I've heard about Darfur on American TV News.

That's b/c I haven't heard a damn thing.

More recently I think of Ludacris' new video which shows an African city, Durban, which I have never seen. It's as beautiful as any Miami or Carribean island.
Most often I think about where my acestors came from and wonder what they were like and I deeply envy those who already know, b/c I never, ever will. This pains me to the very core.

"yeah but ur black we all coem from the motherland" "NO we dont..."second i think of aids i think tht most west africans are the laziest SOB's ever east africans are soem of the most hard working. I dont want to go to africa ever if... It sucks too becuase you know wht they could have become and they were so robbed of tht to me africa is a lame horse we should put it to sleep.

The African continent is a very nice place to live, lots of wild animals. And also lots of very good nice mud huts which is better than concrete building.

Seriously, why are the Japanese so clueless? Apartheid was only a key issue on the news for about 50 years, and then Mandela is only one of the most famous people in the world...

My history teacher told us about this, and then he said "by the way, this is happening right now." Everyone kind of murmured and one kid raised his hand and said "are you sure?"

Seriously, this was an honors history class, most of us watch the news and the history channel, and I myself can't remember the last time I saw Darfur mentioned on American News :D

However, we talked about it, and I never considered the situation in Darfur as genocide. :P I seemed to have been the only one too :innocent:

AIDS, beautiful landscapes, desert, starving children, Bono, that white chick who's in all those movies, lions, rhinos, funny sounding british people in ridiculous outfits shooting said lions and rhinos.

*Edit* Oh, and genocide. Can't forget the genocide.

when i think of africa i think of ainori. no joke. they have a school in africa that their funding. i think in the last episode they said they raised about 400,000 dollars. well they had 40,000,000 yen and some change, so it comes out to about that. i didnt catch it if was for the year, or since they started, but i was happy.
but yeah, africa is in need of help. so much junk going on. they dont need their debts taken away, they need help setting up again so they can slowly repay debts....but hey, not everyone repays debts. america has an ass load of debts, right? that would suck to pay back.
i read something in an english newspaper in japan about a group of scientists who are trying to get a country in africa helped out. by this i mean they help a specific town make a crop, and become good at it, then they leave. they dont rule the business, but give it to the people.
its a tough thing to do though, cause since so many people got it bad, a lot of them dont want to wait and do it an honest way, but take from others to get money, etc.
I hope things get better though :(
