A friend of mine is going to Japan for a couple weeks in November. He asked if there was something we wanted him to bring back with him, but I have no idea if there are things over there you can't really get here. Do you all have any ideas?
I brought things like rice candy, orgami paper, and calligraphy brushes back with me. It depends on what you're into.

You can get pretty much anything over here... most of the stuff that's hard to get that you'd probably want would be food, which would fall into the whole customs sandpit. You could ask for Japanese candies, random things like pamphlets of places he goes, or post cards. Most places will also have ready-made omiyage kits if your friend doesn't mind spending money. :P
I always loved dishware - but breakage is a problem.
Hyakuen stores were the best (I am notoriously cheap). When my friend came to visit, and she bought a ton of souvenirs, we decided to stop at the post office and mail the souvenirs she'd bought so far. It worked well, and I don't think any of her dishes broke. We just used newspaper for the packing. :)
Fans were a very popular gift that everyone in my family loved. Wall scrolls went over well too, but are relatively expensive (you'd want to give your friend $200 in advance for a new one - I found some nice used ones at souvenir shops, though!). Lucky charms from temples have a fun foreign flavor, and are not very expensive. A great thing to mention - save his 5 yen coins - the little copper ones with the hole in the middle. I saved as many as I could - the only coin without Arabic numerals, and the fun hole in the middle make for a great little handout.
Enjoy
