Back when OP9 was just mine, I considered making a message board. I even asked about it on the front page, but got zero responses. ...Not that many people were reading back then. So now it's kind of strange to have a board, a fairly large board, with a lot of users and posts.

As the editorials started to get more popular, I noticed a lot of different emails in my inbox. Young kids reading...older people reading...parents showing the editorials to their kids. Etc. I then realized that I sometimes use a lot of bad fucking language, and talk about some vulgar/explicit stuff (Octopus, anyone?). For a while, I considered toning it down a bit, making things more family-friendly. Then, I decided against that. Despite all the hits, this is still my little corner of the web for me to do with as I please. If you don't like the gift wrapping or the present inside, you certainly don't have to stick around. Nor is it my responsibility to take care of other people's kids.

I actually get a lot of different requests. "Can you talk more/less about kancho?" "Can you tell us more about Japanese schools?" "Can you do more about Japanese society?" If I started bending to cater one group, I'd invariably make at least two other groups unhappy with the change. There is no way to please everyone.

I notice a lot of people who may be discontent with things at the forum saying "Now, at the other forum I go to..." ...But OP9 isn't the other forum you go to. I myself have another forum I visit frequently, SRK. But this place isn't SRK. I can't make it SRK, and it would be a mistake to try. Even at SRK things aren't perfect...there are some days when I'm hard pressed to find a thread I actually want to open. But when it's good, it's good. And I like the people, and would actually be willing to meet a fair share of them in real life given the opportunity. That's the kind of thing I'd hope for OP9.

But that's not really anything I can control. There is no "Environment" button in my control panel. I can enforce rules and make layout changes, that's about it. I suppose I could try to force people to talk about a certain kind of thing or not to make a certain kind of thread...but what's the fun in that?

You don't have to click on every thread. If there's a user you don't like, you don't have to read his/her posts (there's even an ignore button for this very thing). Sometimes, it's OK if 90% of the topics on the front page aren't really things you are interested in. You can still participate in the topics you want to. You can still make your own.

When I click on "Outpost Nine Forum", what do I expect to come to? Another SRK? Or something different? What do I want? And is it something I can ask the mods/admins (heh, me) to do for me? Or something I can do myself?

Just some thoughts.

Personally, I have been reading your Blog since the infamous, "My Kids Are Perverted." I came across it on a seperate forum when somebody brought up the term kancho. Ever sence then I have been checking your page regularly looking for updates. I have always really liked how you were blunt and sometimes rather vulgar. That really is what makes your blog interesting; you are showing us a side of japan that most of us really will never end up seeing. The fact that you are doing this for you makes each post a real treat to read. It wouldn't have that reality TV effect if you just did it for other people. Your stories mean a lot to everybody who reads them, even the people who send you hate mail(why else would they take the time to send it?). In all honesty, thank you for sharing your stories with us.

Just do what you want. There's no need to worry about censorship or any crap like that because its not your job to tip toe around everyone who reads the blogs that may get offended. If they dont like it, dont want to see vulgar language and all that other crap, stop reading it.
As for the forum, theres no way to really controll such a thing because it's made up of the community that is involved. I'm a forum whore and frequent well over 10 a day and subscribed to many many more and generally people have enough common sense over what to and what not to post. They also generally are quite mature (with exception for some people) in the way that they act and show respect to other members.

Thanks Az for getting everything started. Without you, we would not have this little outlet called Outpost Nine Forums. I'm having a lot of fun here.

That's basically it... I agree with everything you say, and I think the forums are great the way they are.

I was just thinking out loud.

SRK = shoryuken.com, probably the biggest online community for Street Fighter fans. I used to play competitively a few years ago, now I only play casually and not even that often.

The GD on SRK has grown to become quite big, and most of the people who frequent it don't even play that many fighting games, ironically enough.

Az, does SRK have much talk about the excellent SF and Darkstalker comics by Udon?

The SF series, along with the various tie-in series are my holy grails of gaming. Hell, I even liked the EX series, despite its many flaws. Skullomania....coolest fighting game character. Ever.

I think this lowly SF/Skullomania/Capcom Cannon fan might just join this SKR you speak of.

Pooka - There's actually a separate forum for the SF comics. I don't visit it much, but I believe Udon himself posts there as well.

Citizen - Well, with not too many new games out discussion has kinda slowed down...but I never visit the Fighting Games Discussion forum so I can't say for certain.

We did have a HUGE thread about the official SF canon, which was eventually turned into a SF Story FAQ and posted on Gamefaqs. Heh, I even got credited in it.

SRK is actually down at the moment from too much traffic...right now is Evolution, the worldwide (?) fighting game championship tourney. I wanted to go this year, but couldn't really spring for the plane ticket to Vegas.

heh that's weird, I've got a friend (nick is Singho or some variant) who's a pretty big SF player too, think he goes to those forums...

Anyway, I like the site as it is now although everything can be improved :D

I live in two forums, here and on Allah...and it takes a lot for me to come to another forum and actually want to post.

I been lurking since your editorials (pre-Japan), and I have always enjoyed your site...just never felt a need to post till recently.

I say keep it up.

I enjoy reading what you have to say and how you have to say it. I really doubt I'd like reading what you think other people want to hear. Just do what you want to do and don't worry about everyone else!

I read all of the editorials, and I really enjoyed them. I showed a few friends and received varying responses. Some were just not interested, some loved them. It wasn't until later I noticed the forums.

Azreal is a very good writer, and while he has a wide range of appeal the subject and nature of his editorials just aren't for everyone. The people who made it all the way to the forums are people who also greatly enjoyed the editorials. It's like Azreal created a filter with his words to weed out the people who wouldn't fit well in his little corner of the world. People without a sense of humor, without interest in other cultures, or people that are easily offended just wouldn't normally make it this far. That's a good thing, and the making of an interesting community. I wouldn't change it.

The only time to be concerned is if the big guy doesn't feel at home in his own forum. When/If that time comes, -=gaijin smash=-. It's his forum, and I think he should do whatever the hell he wants to keep it fun for -him-. We want those brain cells to be relaxed and ready to spit out more editorials - not bogged down babysitting!

This is the first forum I've been to where I don't have to post serious mindboggling shit all the time.
I love you, RWPW.

Yes, and you seem to be doing a pretty good job about taking advantage of it too.

I see you posted in many threads now that have died. Not only thats but in the room of padded walls, your every where.

But its all good I guess. :)
