I think the Gawker's assessment on Ted Kennedy is pretty fair and accurate (Though it skimps on his life after 1992 or so):

He was largely responsible for blocking UHC back in the 70s. lol politicians

Bit of an IRA sympathiser, but he still helped out considerably with Anglo-Eire peace talks.

Ted was made worse and then emerged purified from the Mary Jo Kopechne debacle. He did more good than ill.
