Soccer (or as the rest of the world knows it, football). Unbelievable sport - beautiful to watch, amazing to play and a great mix of tactics and action.

I can be partial to some American Football, rugby and golf though ;)

Definately hurling. I saw it once on TV, it was bloody brilliant. Think of hockey, on a recangular grass pitch, with soccer goals down each end with posts rising above the net. There's a goalie down each end, and there's no rule limiting the rise of the hockey stick, people flick it up and smash it. Best sport I have ever seen (it's Irish) although I've only seen it once or twice. Highly entertaining

(But it isn't like hockey, really, more like Shuffleboard)

*Glomps Kobun* Even though you made fun of it, you still added a horse sport! YAY!
Polo is actually very difficult to play, you have to be able to control a 1/2 ton animal at a very fast pace while trying to hit a little ball accross a field...very hard to do. I've played it a couple of times and fell off my polo pony more than I hit the ball :p. (BTW, equestrian sports are the only sports in the world where men and women compete equally. At least at the olympic level.)

If I was going for a sport that everyone else is more familiar with, I'd have to say that American football is my other favorite sport. I love tackle sports, especially if I get to play too :D.

First of all, no video/computer games will be considered to be a proper sport. Not before female mud/jello wrestling or verbal/physical bitchfest is considered to be a sport first. Also, I tried to include more internationally popular sports, hence the inclusion of cricket (I don't get the craze behind it in Commonwealth countries, like India) but not stuff like lacrosse, hurling, curling, etc. Many winter sports have been excluded as well. And though American football and baseball may not be popular outside of the American continents and few Asian countries, I had to include it, because I'm American. AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!

Polo was included so I could get some brownie points from Shamu and all other pony-loving members of this board :D

OK, here is a sport you REALLY left out. Ultimate frisbee!! Combine aspects of soccer and (american) football and play with a cool flying disk.

The biggest problem with soccer in the US is that it doesn't lend itself well to broadcast. There are few stoppages for commercials (so networks don't like playing it).

Only in the summer, last time I checked. In my book, lacrosse is not popular enough to be mentioned in the top ten list, nor big enough to be mentioned.

Besides, I'm not afraid of Canada.

Soccer- Manchester United, Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Baseball- Atlanta Braves, John Smoltz.
Basketball- San Antonio Spurs, tie between Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

With hockey in the winter. Not sure what goes on during spring and fall. They probably combine spring with summer and fall with winter. I'd look it up...but it's Canada-related. Not worth it.

It is a pretty popular sport though. Lot of fun as well.

tennis, tennis, tennis. no other sport requires as much stamina, determination, hand-eye reflexes, co-ordinated footwork, flexibility in your body, and concentration as it.

you have to have strong legs, strong arms, strong waist, strong back, strong neck, and flexibility in all of those, plus more, plus the ability to do slice shots, backspin, topspin, lobs, smashes, dropshots, speciality shots, jump-steps, the over 15 different types of serves, and volleys just to name some stuff, to even be able to get a *decent* game going.

in any other sport, the most knowledge you need to get a basic game going (with the exception of MAYBE hockey and golf) is just that you have a ball and you need it to get into a goal or area of some kind by beating the shit out of it as hard as you can or throwing it in there as hard as you can. tennis is a technique sport, not power, which is why it's so unique and why it fucking kicks ass.

plus, it's just damn cool to do a slice serve and see the ball LITERALLY curve through the air, much more violently than any other sport (except maybe ja'ali) and not to mention, the insanely fast flat serves, and drop shots are always awesome to see. the game just ragh owns

The best sport is a sport Ive seen once, I dont even know what its called.

Its played in Thailand by really nimble guys who kick a ball over a volleyball size net... Basically volleyball with your feet. The reason its so go is the players are freaks and smash the ball while doing flips. The potential for neck breakage is huge. Coolest ever.

I voted rugby thou cause atleast I can watch the international games without getting bored, unlike every other sport on TV here.

Well, have you ever ridden a horse? Have you ever ridden a horse at 20-25 mph? Have you ever ridden a horse while holding on to a mallet and trying to hit a small wooden ball at 20-25 mph while trying to avoid being hit yourself by other mallets on a horse?
You have to have extremely good balance and control of your body and you have to have good hand-eye coordination. Just like Tennis, you have to be able to stratagize your moves and your hits. But you have to do this while trying to control a half ton animal....Now do you see my point? I'll give you the footwork for tennis, but it's a breeze compared to being able to sit on a horse. I know, I've played both :p

Playing fantasy baseball is not necessarily an indicator of obsessiveness. Some people actually put in money, and make/lose money through fantasy sports. Now that's obsessive.

I play fantasy baseball/basketball, and it's more playing for fun and keep tracking of my favorite players.

That'll never happen. The Braves are the Philadelphia Eagles of the MLB. Only not quite as lame. They'll always choke.

Well, Braves did win the World Series back in '95. The way I see it, Braves always had All-Stars, but they never had superstars. Someone that can just take their teammates on their backs and ride it out. And by that, I don't mean the pitchers, but the hitters. Braves had so many Hall of Fame quality pitchers in the past, and many pitchers seem to have their best seasons at Turner Field.

This year, I was not sure if they were going to make the playoffs period, due to many changes in the roster. They had to play so many rookies due to injuries and slumps, yet they managed to win the division again. Not to mention the fabulous game by John Smoltz against Roger Clemens the other day. This year, I'd love to see Braves win it all in a ten-year anniversary of their last World Series victory, or have the White Sox get over the whole Black Sox dealie and win one for the New Millenium.

If you've been a Braves fan for 10+ years, them choking in the playoffs is almost expected. I hope that they could turn the trend around. And they at least made the playoffs, not like the Phillies or the Nationals.

DeepBlueVibes, there's something that you learn usually on the first day of a riding lesson, that anything the horse does is your fault (I'm not kidding, this is pounded into equestrian's heads) and for the most part it's true. The horse doesn't choose to be on the polo field. You use your skill as a rider to control as much of the randomness as possible. And Tennis has alot of luck/randomness to it too! Just like all other sports. There's nothing that special about it.
And I argue with you only on the basis that I've actually played BOTH sports.

Not sure where you live, but boxing is big where I live. Everyone goes to see the fights and nearly everyone that is a die-hard fan bets money on these fights. It's not a dwindling sport as far as I'm concerned.

The deaths are sad, of course, but that is always a risk in full-contact sports. Even more so in combat sports. The career of a fighter is always a risky one, and I believe they understand this most of the time. I guess I can understand why you would not be too crazy about it, but for me, a martial artist, it's great.

Interesting thing to note... I actually like watching boxing more than K1 or UFC fights.

Boxing IS dwindling, at least from the cultural perspective. Nothing can match the international attention boxers received in the past decades, from Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rumble in the Jungle, Leon Spinks, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, and even Mike Tyson. Seems like boxing has lost much interests after Tyson's career went down.

Boxing is destructive in a way that you bring up physically competitive young men, train them day and night to go out and have a brutal match that will live their body susceptible to more rapid aging than any other sports. And I would rather call boxing a combat sport than martial art.

I didn't call it a martial art. I said I was a martial artist. It's alright for a martial artist to enjoy combat sports. I could talk about the differences all day, but I won't. And it's not like they are forced to become boxers. They want to do what it takes to last in the ring, so it's their choice.

I guess boxing is not as popular as it was in the past decades, but it certaintly is not unpopular. There are plenty of great fighters alive and fighting right now so there is always something interesting to see.

I agree on the boxing popularity dropping after Tyson's career flop.

I don't have problem with people enjoying boxing. I'm a fan of martial arts as well, but fighting in an enclosed ring until your opponent is no longer able to fight goes against my theory of practicing martial arts. But it's their choice, they do get paid for their efforts, so that's that.

Boxing was huge, especially during the earlier part of the 20th century, when people flocked around the radios to listen to boxing matches, everyone talked about the fight, and there was a rivalry between Germany and America at the match between Mach Schmeling and Joe Louis. It was more than just a boxing match.

Poularity of boxing is debatable. Many people I know choose to watch other sports events other than boxing, nor are they interested in boxing period. The circus of Mike Tyson and Don King was something else though.

Myrsilus
10-08-2005, 11:42 PM
I hate Don King... I was fascinated with Tyson before for his amazing power, but then he went and screwed up... That Holyfield fight was something else.

And once again, I do not consider boxing a martial art. I would hope no one really considers it one, especially since the term pretty much states that it has to be applicable in warfare. Boxing would be more at home on the ring or on the streets, if necessary. Kind of like TKD, only with emphasis on fists.

Fellow soccer fans- which European professional soccer league do you prefer, the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, Spanish Primera Liga, or the Dutch Eredivisie?

Seria A used to be the popular league was the most exciting one to watch during the 90's, but now I just keep my focus on Premier League, it is arguably the best soccer league in the world.

Premier League for me - I'm a Man Utd fan and have been for about 13 years. I can watch La Liga, especially if Barca are playing but Serie A bores me senseless.

Hmm....(thinking).....anyways. Very little basketball fans. Anyways, I wish I coulda voted twice. Basketball is a sport I grew up loving/playing but I'm also a tennis fan, though I haven't played it in awhile. I'm not much of a fan on sports team, more like a fan of the sport itself. I'd rather play sports than watch it.

Cricket is still has no votes, maybe its cause Australia finally sux at it.. Surely theres a pom on this site who likes cricket.

Ok Yogi, I have to ask...what's a pom? Is that someone from the UK? I keep hearing that word, but I'm not exactly sure what it means.

And Jay has been trying to teach me the rules of cricket, since I've always wanted to know how to play cricket and rugby, but I think unless I actually see them played, I'm just not going to get it...I keep trying to compare them to American football and baseball even though I know they're different sports :p!

BTW I really don't understand why the Australians call us poms - they're the ones who were Prisoners of her Majesty :p

Shamu, don't bother with learning cricket. The moment you do, you may get into other British crap, like having teas and scones while slathering them with marmite.... Uggggggh, marmite. Rather, it's your duty as an American to go out and spread the glory of American football! USA! USA!

Steroids has been stigmatizing baseball, but then again, it's hard to see any sport that hasn't had its share of 'doping' controversy. Besides, there are many great players who haven't been juiced yet play spectacular games. Not the Braves today after the 8th inning. Curse you, Astros!

For Australian football vs. American football, I didn't even know Australia had its own football. Ooops.

I was going to make a comment about the Cowboys, but I'm not going to. I will only look stupid because my team lost against them. :(

Although I will say this... I say I am a loyal fan, no matter how much they tend to suck these recent years... Hopefully they'll have another great era.

Don't really care for Cowboys, but am glad that Eagles lost. Falcons played a good game against the Patriots in absence of Vick, though it pisses me when Pats squeak by with their field goals.

Oh please, the Falcons were lucky to even be close to the Pat's today.

They're not even in the same league as far as competition goes. :p

What ever have the Falcons won? Nothing.

I agree with Shy there.

They did play a good game, though.

I can't find fascination in general sports in that they feel super-repetitive.

Sadly, this is how I'm starting to feel with events like K-1 and Pride; it's always muay thai, kick boxing, kyokushinkai karate, vale tudo, brazilian jiu-jitsu, and in some cases, taekwondo. All major sporting styles that are effective, but damn does it get boring to see:

Masato: left hook
Buakaw: wasn't in range for hook, sends left kick
Masato: get kicked and is sent sprawling in the corner
Buakaw: right kick to the ribs
(ROUND END)
(Masato wins by decision)
(Repeat with Albert Krause and any other competitor)

Bah humbag.

Akitaka, don't worry, though I enjoy K-1 and Pride, I don't even count them as sports. Ha!

And for Falcons- yeah, but at least we got the Braves. Who lost today as well. Gah. But personally, I wasn't counting on either team today, for Falcons was without Michael Vick, yet managed to play a close game, and Braves was without its bullpen for the whole series. Yet they managed to play six hours straight.

Brett Favre!! One of the hotest QB's in the NFL and I love the Packers...
GO GREENBAY!!!

I know this is really late.....but I think I love you :D. Packers are the shit man. Just wish they would win some games . I havent checked up on them but that last I heard they hadn't won a game yet. This is a sad year for Green Bay so far. Oh and Football rocks all other sports.....except rugby :D.

Green Bay Packers! FTW! o/\o, They'd better start doing better! :(
At least they've won a Super Bowl, unlike some other teams mentioned in this thread...eh hem...
I also really like the Pittsburg Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys (duh :p). So if any of those teams are doing well, then I'm happy. But I really like it when the Packers are doing good!

In other sports news...So I should forget about learning cricket huh? Then what about rugby? Should I still learn how to play that?

Meh, I scare alot of people...it's one of my faults, what can I say ;) ?
LOL, I'm just one of those people that's very physical, so contact sports like football (which I love to play) and rugby appeal to me.
That and there's nothing like laying on the couch on a Sunday afternoon with a big bowl of chili when it's a cold day, snuggling under a blanket and watching football. It's one of my favorite things to do :D. It's even more fun if I've been playing football myself before hand.

And yes Kobun, the Packers are not doing well right now...but I'm still holding on to that bit of hope that they'll do better!

I have not seen anyone mention any track & field type sports.
In just the past race, we had to run in the middle of heavy rain, got dirty like hell, I saw people falling while doing a downhill sprint *ouch*. I saw People who just could not take it anymore and huddle near a tree while throwing up whatever breakfast they had. Hell I have seen people pretty much moaning in pain as they tried to get the energy for the last mile( 2.5 mil run)..... And then there are the people who blast toward the finish after only 12 minutes ( pretty much a 5 min mile, while most people I have seen can barely do 1 ten minute mile).

Then there is poll-vaulting. That sport seems pretty fun, and I would love to try it this indoor season.

Track and Field, I have respect for the sport, it certainly is not an 'everyday' sport, and certainly not something you could get drunk to, unless you were invovled in a drinking game where bets were placed by shots. It is probably more personal than most of the sports listed above, where participants thrive to break their own records. That's not as fun as other sports.

Besides, you guys get a big event every four years.

Nah Cross country is a team thing. So not only are you trying to help yourself, but you try to help your friends. We run together everyday, We do our workouts together, we give each other advice. I know for a fact I would be much worse if it was not for my fellow team members. That is why In many races I see certain schools clumped together. Plus it is an activity where you know your value, and no one can protest it.

Shamu it's all good the Pack aren't doing well (and I'm not just saying that as a Bears fan :P) I mean with the NFC north being as week as it is all of us still have a chance to win it. I mean c'mon Detroit is in first place. DETROIT! Yay for the crappiest div in football :D And I can't believe the Eagles got trounced by the Boys. Oh well they still play another game this year. Rivalries are always fun to watch, though being a Donovan McNabb fan I hate when the Eagles lose. And Donovan has to be one of the toughest qb's ever. Shin injury (not sure how bad), bruised chest (took out a tough sob like McNair last year), and a sports hernia and he's still playing? I mean day-um yo. The Mac Qbs are tough as nails.

Yay for Donovon McNabb! I was disappointed in the Eagles yesterday.

Why Eagles? Why did you lose? :(

I am going to take a picture later in the day, with my Eagles Jersey on and put it in the picture thread.
