This just screams gimmick to me, but maybe some others have different opinions.

Steele becomes first African-American RNC chairman (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/30/rnc.chairman/index.html)

I don't understand, why does society determine race just by looks. Doesn't the genetic make up count for anything. And why does the media always have to mention just one single race. Why can't they name someone under multiple races such as "The First White-Black-Yellow-Red-Brown-American President of the........"

Then I'm doing my job correctly.

Even though I think differently from everyone else, why can't you accept me for who I am? Mr. Rogers would.

I think I love him more with every post he makes. He provides op9 with some much needed comic relief. For further proof see my signature.

Also lol @ RNC. Not much more to say, since I don't know anything about American politics.

The RNC haven't learnt from their mistakes with Alan Keyes and Justice Clarence Thomas yet.

For the duration of his campaign, Steele fought suspicions that he was too moderate to lead the party because of his blue state roots and his former membership in the Republican Leadership Council, a group that sought to curb the influence of social conservatives in the party.
I'm glad for this, at least. If the new leader of the RNC is working to curb the influence of social conservatives, real republicans might be able to reclaim their original platform as political conservatives and start to put all the ultra-christian-fundamentalist-xenophobic crap behind them.

It may have been reactionary but it's a good thing.

I don't see it as a gimmick. If they can become more modernized they would start looking a lot more attractive to people.

Um, Micheal Steele IS a social conservative on most issues....

For the record, I voted for Alan Keyes in the primary last year. Although it was largely because I was still skeptical of Ron Paul. Shame.

Honestly I don't care what race politicians are. It's little more than a curiosity for me; I prefer to focus on the substance rather than skin color, hair style, etc. Though I find it incredibly alarming that any black person who doesn't fall in line with the liberal agenda is treated like some sort of traitor - it reeks of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy.

The whole problem with the Republican party is that they've alienated their base of real conservatives in a vain attempt to attract moderates and liberals, which has been a fantastically unsuccessful strategy. I'm voting Libertarian unless a true conservative runs as a Republican - which probably won't happen again any time soon.

Although I don't agree with Pres. Obama on much of anything, I fully support his presidency - the Republicans deserve to fail for a decade of treachery.

Um, Micheal Steele IS a social conservative on most issues....Read it again, that's what MNJ said. She said that he isn't a fundamentalist Christian such as Bush and Rumsfeldt.

If he has been elected because of his policies, which would reflect real change within the Republicans, it wouldn't be a bad thing. If they're just trying to capitalize on his race, it's cynical as hell.

Actually, I have no idea what kind of a Christian, if any, he is. I pay little to no attention to republicans nowadays. That line from the article just stood out at me.

I think I'm getting tired of all the black/white race relations discussions. Maybe everyone should go back to accusing all the white guys of being Japano/Asian Womeno-philes.

it reeks of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy.

Yeah...that's not it.

Anyway, THIS (http://www.pamshouseblend.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=9297) is highly amusing.

David Duke loses it over Michael Steele at RNC
To Hell with the Republican Party!

GOP traitors appoint Obama Junior as Chairman of the Republican Party
I am glad these traitorous leaders of the Republican Party appointed this Black racist, affirmative action advocate to the head of the Republican party because this will lead to a huge revolt among the Republican base. As a former Republican official, I can tell you that millions of rank-and-file Republicans are mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore! We will either take the Republican Party back over the next four years or we will say, "To Hell With the Republican Party!" And we will take 90 percent of Republicans with us into a New Party that will take its current place!

I think the insanity of nominating "Mr. Amnesty" John McCain and now this Black racist - will lead to insurgency in the Republican ranks, and a lot of dissidents getting elected in Republican Party primaries around the country. This will result over the next four years a real move by millions of Republicans to take the party back to the populist issues that are not only right but can win for the Republican Party. We must end affirmative action, protect our gun rights and all our constitutional rights, have a moratorium on immigration, we must have protectionism, yes I said protect American businesses and their workers from NAFTA and GATT and the lie of free trade, and we must have America First, not foreign interventionism. Our boys should be home protecting the American borders a not being murdered on the borders of Iraq or Afghanistan. The time as come for Republican Party to stand up to Obama and defend American heritage, rights, and freedom!

...Let's make this abomination in the Republican Party, the last major party of White redoubt, as a rallying cry of resistance!

I have no problem with the republican party splitting up into different factions. Best of luck winning elections with that.

I have no love for idiots who spew hate -
... "And we will take 90 percent of Republicans with us into a New Party that will take its current place!"
A new party of old white guys who are haters and in disgrace? What would be the difference?

I would love it if Palin and her "base" cause the GOP to splinter further ...

Electing the first black chairman is a pretty good way to distract people from his politics.

Racism isn't stopped by "hey, me too" by the by. The only way to end it would be would be to have humans consider themselves as part of the same group, which won't happen short of an alien invasion.
