Wasn't really sure if we had one of these... I looked (albeit briefly) and the closest I could find was the 'your kicks' thread. I'm thinking this could be a similar thing just on a broader scale. Either show or talk about the type of clothes/styles your wearing, what styles you like or dislike on other people, etc. Ask for advice or what not. If something like this already exists, feel free to merge or whatever. :box:
Anyway, recently I've been generally going with a generally casual look with either a black or brown blazer with some sort of T-shirt, long or short kinda depending on the weather. Sometimes I'll throw in a cardigan to mix it up (slightly). I'm basically always wearing boot-cut jeans and my black chucks along with those, though I'm looking to expand in that department. Either another pair of chucks or something similar (I'm kind of interested in something along the lines of this (http://zeta.zappos.com/product/7496680/color/181159), though I don't really know what color). I love my black chucks cause they go with absolutely everything, so I'm kind of looking for something along those lines. I'm also kind of interested in seeing how a pair of wingtips would look, so if anyone has any advice in that area it'd be appreciated. :watson:
Now, unrelated to me, basically the only thing I have to say is that, for the ladies out there, wearing spandex and uggs makes you look like a slutty retard. I'm sure that has its appeal to some, just know the crowd that caters too. Sorry if I offended anyone with that, but not really. :innocent:

We had a Fashion thread waayyyyyy back but that thread is long gone since the user had her threads deleted.
Yay for this good thread. :x

I hate uggs. They are soooo ugly. It's funny 'cause I was just speaking to fufu about this yesterday. They're really warm to wear I hear, so I guess if it's snowing a lot they're appropriate to wear. They are ugly though, and I hate how they treat it like a great fashion statement especially worn with skirts or shorts. SO ugly. When they have the faux fur as well, that is the worst. :x
Living in Texas, I see a lot of uggs and I don't understand why.
Edit: My style varies on days and events. I'll have to make a post on this sometime soon ;x.

Generally, I wear slim-fitting clothes; this is the only real constant of my style. During the cold months I like the combination of a sweater with a button front shirt or long sleeved tee, and skinny jeans/pants. And I love scarves. When it's warm I usually prefer colorful tees and sometimes polos. I like artsy-looking tees; I don't really care for ironic/funny stuff. Heritage 1981 tends to have the sort of clothes I like, but they never seem to have anything in an S size; I guess all the skinny hipster kids beat me to it.
Once it warms up I'll probably get some shorts for the first time in two years or so. I hate big, loose shorts, so I'll probably try to find something a bit skinnier this time around. Some new sandals would be great, too; what are some good ones to look for?
As far as shoes go, I've found that I like Vans slip-ons the most. They're really comfortable, fit well, and look cool; they sell them in all sorts of cool prints, like the ones I have now. I switched over to slip-ons after last summer in Japan; the shoes I was wearing at the time were a major pain to get on and off! Now I'm planning ahead and shouldn't have trouble with this next time.
These days I get tees and random odds and ends from Heritage, shirts from Express, jeans/sweaters from Urban Outfitters, and tees from American Apparel. I don't really go for any particular style; it's some combination 'hipster dweeb,' 'fashionable geek,' and 'european metrosexual,' to describe myself in fairly derogatory terms. :D
I'm pretty cool about other people's style - it really should just be something you do for fun rather than trying to impress people/fit in; I don't think any of my friends dress anything like me, in fact. The only style that really irritates me is the local frat boy look - fake torn-up pants from Abercrombie, big shirts bragging about how they play football or rugby or something, hemp necklace, and of course, the favorite college sports team hat over their messy hair - long, but not really long enough to offend or anything dangerous like that. Probably about fifty percent of the guys at my college look just like this.

I don't like those ugg things at all, but yeah, lots of girls around here wear that stuff. It seems like a fad that's been going on for far too long. I kinda like the neo-hippie/bohemian girl look - long hair with bangs, geeky glasses, a colorful dress, stockings, and slipper shoes, that sort of thing. Looks cute, but unfortunately many of these girls I've met are actually a bit crazy and incompatible with me. Oh well.

Most of the girls I've seen wearing that style come across as brainless sorority chicks, though I suppose that's a generalization. As you said, a trend that's gone on for far too long.
I'm liking the places you listed too, I'll have to check em out more often.
Where does everyone usually get their jeans from? I'm looking for maybe a couple good pairs that'll last me.

My fashion is really... weird. I don't have a lot, and it isn't what you would consider fashionable, but I manage to pull it off regardless. I like to wear long sleeve shirts under t-shirts, but the long sleeve shirts are generally white button-up shirts. I'll sometimes wear soccer socks with holes cut out for fingers as like a weird glove. I have a few t-shirts I got from working at school, and a few t-shirts from my old work places. I manage to pull those off smashingly well. A lot of my t-shirts are from middle school and high school when I got a bunch of cheap "gag" shirts. I have a few hand me downs... you know those "vintage" shirts they sell that are printed to look faded? Yeah, I have a few of those shirts, only they're not fake. They're from 10-15 years ago when my brothers wore them.
I have a lot of pants and shorts from middle school and family. Nothing special there. My shoes depend entirely on my pants. If they're long, I wear my Converse or my boots, if they're shorts, I wear my slip-ons. Or I wear my boots. I also wear a lot of hats - mostly knit, although I'm starting to wear a fedora more often.
Year round I almost always wear a sweater. I have one sweater I spraypainted a design my friend made for me, another is a volcom sweater that is ridiculously colorful and baggy, a gray sweater I intend to spray paint in the future, a navy sweater I usually wear in the summer (since it's really light), a black ugly sweater I usually wear with a pair of tan shorts only (it works *shrug*), and a sweater/jacket combo I don't wear too often because it's made for girly men who don't have shoulders. It fits me fine, unless I want to raise my arms.
My style stays the same year round. Temperature changes don't bother me too much - although if it's really humid I won't wear five layers, just three.
I think my fashion would be different if I was willing to spend the money to constantly update my wardrobe. As it is, I only focus on the important things - socks, boxers, etc.
I like the fashion at my school. A lot of my friends are very unfashionable, but I go to a school with a lot of hip/trendy people. They're nice to look at, although I don't understand the majority of their choices - like it'll be freezing balls out and they'll be wearing a mini-skirt and a thin top... and then complain about the cold! You can be fashionable without being naked. And I don't understand guys who wear their pants around their knees. I saw a guy whose pants were MADE that way. I laughed at him, although I'm sure he didn't hear it.
That's like those pre-faded/pre-wrinkled/pre-torn shirts and pants. They'll wear jeans that look like they're falling apart, but condemn people for wearing jeans that are falling apart? Gah.

When I'm not bumming around the house in tank tops and boxers (like 90% of my life these days, I swear), I tend to go for girly stuff like minidresses with tights and heels. I also really like button-ups and ties, just to dyke it up from time to time.
I've been wearing a lot of skirts and dresses lately because it's just so damn hard to find a decent pair of pants. A 15" hip-to-waist ratio and a longer than average inseam may be fun to look at, but they're hell to dress sometimes. :\ I also have major issues with pants showing off my underwear to the world. I think I'm going to invest a few pairs of those fashionably high-waisted pants so I don't have to coordinate my undies with my outfits anymore.
I think I'm heading to Vegas next weekend to do a little shopping. Miracle Mile shops are delicious. :9

For the record, I don't like uggs, either.
There really isn't much to say about my sense of fashion other than I hate clothes that show off brand names across the entire article and I usually just stick to solid colors. If I wear a jacket, it's either my leather one or my new brown one that my mother calls the James Dean coat. I also have a hat, but I couldn't tell you what kind of hat it is. It's an old style of hat, though.

This for me as well. I hate looking like a walking billboard. Graphic tees can be cool, but not when its the aforementioned kind kyle was talking about where it's for a rugby team or some shit like that, when you probably aren't into rugby or weren't around then.

As much as it pains me to say it, my fashion sense comes from a mixture of trendy indie folk people and Scenesters. (Lol, California).
Piercings (I used to have 12, but I took out my snakebites and my eyebrow) , un-natural hair colors (I have pink, green, blue, and purple in my hair right now) , dark eye makeup and bright bright clothing and shoes, mixed with a bohemian/hippie look. I'm not honestly trying to be "cool" I just really like the type of fashion that comes along with those types. Such is life.

Usually I just wear clothes that have been described as slightly punky. A lot of what I wear are usually black, purple, or red.. Since purple and red are colors I really like and black just matches with them. Lately I've been wearing a lot more short skirts, either over tights or pants. Simple shirts.. and maybe a jacket or something over the shirt. My shoes are the cheapest shoes available except for my dock martins. :P
And I agree with the thread.. Uggs are ugly.

Oh god Doc Martens.
My last roommate stole a pair of cherry red patent ones from her coworker, and I stole them from her.
Dear lord, I am in love with those things~~
I have a lot of shoes, haha. The ones I actually wear on a regular basis, though, are a nice pair of black peep-toe Vera Wang flats, some black suede knee-high stiletto boots, and world's most comfortable brandless white slip-ons splattered in fake blood.

I'm a bit ashamed to admit this but I think my style would be described as such: Twelve year-old teenage boy trying to dress like a 20 year-old female. It's really hard for me to be girly because I'm a complete tom boy, I hang out with a group of guys and I grew up playing sports. All through out high school I was WAY into the punk look and never left my house without wearing a pair of Dickies (BOY DICKIES MIND YA!) and battered Chucks. As I entered my junior/senior year I actually started wearing pants that fit me, no wonder I got a boyfriend! haha.
As college progresses and as I start taking cues from my overly girly co-workers I am learning. I would say now I am getting better but I still prefer a hoody and jeans to skirts and heels. As of now I am in LOVE with skinny leg jeans. Dear Jesus, where the fuck were these all my life?!!?? Why did I ever wear anything else? There is nothing that looks better than a pair of skinny leg jeans, even if you can't fit shit in your pockets.
Nowadays its all about Forever 21 skinny leg colored jeans. I have a pair of blue, green, red, purple, gray and black. Loooovvveee it. And I like wearing those simple tanks mean't for layering. I like to wear wife beaters or tight tanks because I'm usually wearing a heavy coat or hoody on top. As for shoes I like wearing simple black vans, my zori, or $15 payless flats.
I have simple taste but I'm trying to expand my wardrobe. I still think my look comes off as confused.
But that's cause I am. haha

I tend towards a t-shirt over a long sleeved shirt, and jeans. Not the most creative look in the world, but I like the way t-shirts look on me. No need to let them go to waste just because it happens to be winter in Minnesota. :D
Other than that, thin sweaters is my fashion of choice. I have a lot of curves, so things that are too loose make me look about twice as big as I actually am, but things that are too tight bring out my baby love handles. It's pretty hard to find things that actually fit.
I love the vintage skirt suit look that they have in Japan (this (http://www.nissen.co.jp/sho_item/regular/sho_images/7200_23201b_01.jpg), for example), but I don't have slim enough lines to pull it off. For less casual stuff, I like sweater dresses with tights and boots, although those are hard enough to find for me as well. But I did find one that looks awesome on me.

I love girls wearing uggs. :$
It's like doing a hot hot eskimo.
I have more clothes than you do.
40 long sleeve collared shirts
30 short " " "
10 pairs of dress pants
6 pairs of jeans
30 jackets
15 sweaters
*does not include clothes stored in two oversize suitcases on my balcony or two boxes in my closet
Today I went for a kind of classy casual look:
Agnes B blue/desat blue stripe shirt
(some Italian) Red/grey/brown argyle sweater
Polo Ralph Lauren houndstooth tan jacket (with same shirt in this pic (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=997175&l=1ba66&id=768861488))
AX dark blue jeans
Cole Haan white casual shoes
Geoffrey Beene brown cashmere scarf
Makes me sound really loaded but honestly everything I buy is used or on some ridiculous sale.

I highly suggest these shoes. I wore cheap ass Adidas Superstars religiously for like four years. I finally got over after I came to Japan but I couldn't find a better replacement. I tried these on at Isetan in Shinjuku and they felt awesome and looked slick, but cost like $350. I got the same pair off the internets for $130 and now I have trouble wearing anything else. I have a pair of Chuck-style Issey Miyake shoes that are well made, but for people that actually like their shoes to feel good I suggest these Cole Haan. Take advantage of the recession by buying shit you can't usually afford.
Speaking of which, winter sales in Japan were pretty insane. I copped some Armani, a shirt and a tie, for $120. 70% off FTW

Fashion....uh...it's not the wearer that looks at oneself, it is the people around the wearer that looks at the wears appearance. It's kind lame if one puts too much emphasis on there fashion because they cannot be secure about themselves in front of other people depending on how they appear. It's not the wearer that has to look at oneself, so caring about your fashion appearance is about trying to please those around you about how to look. It's even lamer that most of society judge people based on their fashion appearance instead of judging them on character/behavior.
I stick to the bear minimum, t-shirt, jeans, and comfortable shoes. And screw branding b/c that's just another scam that people have fallen into by the clothing industry. Branding is just another way to divide social status's and people think one person is better for wearing the more expensive/popular brands and judge them by that. When it all come down to it, a piece of clothing is a piece of clothing no matter what company logo it has tagged on it. One is better off allocating their money elsewhere instead of spending more money for branding.
It's better to buy clothing based on quality such as thickness, stitching, and long term durability instead of by brands.

I don't think I see many girls with that look here. I have the short (side swept) bangs and glasses (not geeky), and leggings, but would not say my style is bohemian. I do like bohemian hair styles though and do it once in a great while. It's pretty.

to Slick:
Attempting to look good =/= being insecure.
Believe it or not, most people do actually look at their own appearance, and judge themselves at least to some extent. Regardless of what you think, what you wear will give people a certain impression. It's about what kind of impression you're trying to give off. It's impossible to determine anything about a person's character or personality just by looking at them- that's part of what fashion is for, trying to express some small part of that.
Now, there's nothing wrong with jeans and a t-shirt, and I'm sure most people here do that at least somewhat regularly. Its simple and assuming the clothes fit you well it can look damn good. But there is actually a difference in quality depending on where you buy something from- and different people will have different preferences whether its the fit of something or the quality of the material.
But if you don't give a shit about your appearance, people could just as easily interpret that as you having little self-respect as they could view you as the super-confident guy who just couldn't care less about how anyone views him.

to Slick:
Attempting to look good =/= being insecure.
Well that may not be true in all cases, but the clothing industry sometimes advertise in that manner and poke at the person's insecurity to get them buy there brands. This is true for the adolescent population and their wants to wear a certain brand because it's popluar, and the insecurity to not do so would make them feel lower. And the clothing industry targets on this demographic b/c their parents are the one with the money.
Good point. I was just trying to point out that one should know how to inspect the quality of clothes (based on preference) instead of assuming the quality based on branding and pricing.
But if you don't give a shit about your appearance, people could just as easily interpret that as you having little self-respect as they could view you as the super-confident guy who just couldn't care less about how anyone views him.
Giving the impression about not caring about your appearance would be hard to pull off, unless one wears torn/rubbish clothing or they blatantly say they don't care about their appearance....like some people.
The less one cares about how others view oneself, the more control one has over their life and can focus on more important matters. (Not implying that one should appear in the worst condition possible).
Wearing a certain types of shoe because of it's appearance even though it's not comfortable would mean that one doesn't care about the health of their feet. Reminds me of the women who's feet are mess up b/c they wear/wore heels all the time.

SlickWilly, since most of us here don't seem interested in big/popular brands, I think it's a bit premature to assume we're just trying to look trendy. I honestly don't care if I look trendy or not as long as I like how I look. And I really don't care what brand my clothes are as long as they look good and are well made. I don't really like spending excessive amounts of cash on clothes.
For slip-on shoes, you gotta get the ones with cool prints. They look way too plain in a solid color.
Stephy, I don't know if it's "bohemian" or not, that's just the first descriptor of that style that popped to mind. I don't know what it's really called and I'm admittedly making a few generalizations here.

I haven't, yet. I think I may not though. I have purchased from HK sites before and they usually don't have the best quality and steal pictures from other sites to advertise their look-a -like clothing. Might not be like that for all HK sites though.
I just did a quick google on this and it revealed that the quality isn't the best, because the prices are pretty cheap. You can look more into it by googling reviews for that website.

I honestly don't care if I look trendy or not as long as I like how I look. And I really don't care what brand my clothes are as long as they look good and are well made. I don't really like spending excessive amounts of cash on clothes.
Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Despite having made fun of Roxfontaine for it in the past, the only bit of fashion I even even consider is shoes. I pretty much only wear black cloth sneakers. I've got two pairs, they're both pretty nice. :) I've got a pair of work boots too, but pretty much never have a reason to wear them.
The rest of my wardrobe is entirely jeans, t-shirts, some button up shirts I typically wear unbuttoned over a t-shirt, and a few inherited suits.

Are you in California? Because from the way you described your look it sounds like you are :X
haha, Yes! I am in San Francisco. You live in Sac-town?
Also, kaizoku, your styles fine. No need to be confused. Personally, I find it a lot more attractive when girls can look good without looking like they spent hours putting their outfit/makeup together. Maybe that's just preference, but there's nothing wrong with jeans and a hoodie
Thanks. It's nice to know people appreciate a girl who isn't dolled up every day.

My style: Simple, yet chic, sweet/youthful, cutesy, and sometimes a mod look. I like edgy when it comes to hair and matching color schemes with accessories to hair and clothes. I can't afford my style ... ._.
Favorite color to wear: Black
Least: Green and orange.
Clothes:
I love long shirts with long low-rise tight jeans. Many of my shirts are mid-thigh or longer, so they can act interchangeably as a "dress". I like this, because it gives the illusion of a long and slim look making me seem taller, so I don't have to wear heels. Heels hurt too much. I buy heels and never wear them. -.-
If I don't wear jeans I wear a shirt as a dress and wear it with boots during the Winter, or sandals for the Summer. I wear skirts rarely, but own a quite a few. Long tunics are cute for a mod look. I'm not a loyal brand name shopper, but all my *laced* cami/tank tops are from Aeropostale and American Eagle, since I love their designs and my jeans always come from 5.7.9, because I don't know many stores that sell my size. I wear very long sweaters with boots and black skinny jeans. I like leggings with outfits too. Knee-high socks are great with skirts, shorts, long shirts, and dresses. I like hoodies, but don't have as many as I wish I could.
Shoes:
I adore Flats (especially peep toe types) and have many different colors and styles. I love belted/laced boots of all sizes (knee-high/mid-calf/ankle) and own about four pairs of boots. All black. I love black boots. I have a pair of cheap Airwalk sneakers, but the design on the sneakers were so cool so I bought them :3. Lots of sandals of different colors and designs. I might go for that bohemian gladiator sandal this Summer. Hmmm...
A pair of suede black clogs (cost about $50.00-100.00, but I'm a bargain hunter and got them for $18.00... I was extremely lucky.) I really love them and they go with almost any outfit. Link (http://i16.ebayimg.com/06/i/001/16/90/1279_1_sbl.JPG)
Accessories:
Very girly and cute. (Hairbands with bows, ribbons for my hair, thin pearl necklaces, choker necklaces, waist belts, butterfly/tinkerbell/Hello Kitty jewelry, pink hair extensions, always black purses with Tink/Hello Kitty or one of her friends.) I don't wear many accessories, but I have a lot! I like a simple and clean look. A necklace and maybe a hairband for the day. My ears are pierced, but I don't wear earrings. >.<
In the house/lazy:
Flannel/Plaid bottoms with graphic T-shirts. Tinkerbell slippers.
Hair:
Usually straightened and in an up do, or down with a hair band. An occasional loose messy bun or pig-tail braids. I am too lazy to do anything else, since just straightening takes almost an hour. Short side-swept bangs.
Clip-in pink hair extensions added once in a great while.
Makeup:
A "natural" look. I'm allergic so I use fragrance-free, talc-free, oil-free, non-Comedogenic, hypoallergenic minerals for sensitive skin. That's a mouthful... I only wear it for job interviews. Can't be bothered with it, but I feel really pretty with it.
Dislikes:
Brightly colored leggings/skinny jeans (sorry >_<, seems quite a few of you like it), uggs, sheer leggings, hoop earrings (HATE them), fake glasses (I have prescription glasses and hate them, yet people use fake ones! Ugh! It's like they're mocking me! ;p), giant fake lashes, puffy winter jackets, huge brand name labels, and many more stuffz.
Likes on men:
Peacoats :x They're adorable.

Brightly colored leggings are the most distasteful thing I've ever encountered in recent American fashion trends. Seriously, what the fuck. Here in JP minutely plaid patterned black stockings are all the rage, and it can be pretty sexy. There are few things LESS SEXY then removing a girl's stockings though :(

I worked with a teen when I was in college who did it very well, with red, blue and green highlights on natural-blonde hair. One key, I think, is that she didn't overdo it. Sometimes less is more.

XD Eh, all you have to do is have money, go to a mall, and find things you consider nice, since it's totally subjective. I'm certain just t-shirt and jeans looks great! I just look for really cutesy shirts to go with my fairly plain low-rise jeans. Adding some accessories is what usually spices up the style! Add in some cute shoes. Or style your hair. Can make quite a difference! I am always looking for hair styling tutorials to try new stuff. Where do you usually shop at? Maybe try venturing into new stores at the mall? :)

Ah, good. They ship quickly and they're prices are grand. I love them. Ordered a few times from them. I have yet to buy clothes from them, since I am worried it will be too big on me. I was actually inspired to do blonde/black because of Shakira and of this girl: Linky (http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5271/z122129359ub8.jpg) She looks so cool! I also want what she is wearing. :gwitch: I ended up just dying brown underneath my blonde layers (so had that style for like a year), since I felt the black and bleach blonde wouldn't look right on me.

I dyed my hair not too long ago. It's presently all brown with blondish tones.
Edit: the girl in the pic you linked, Lin looks awesome. I'd be too worry about my hair falling out though after trying that. Her hair looks processed, stringy, and straw like >.<, but the colors look so cool. One of my favorite color combinations is black/pink.

^The brown works on you Steph. I think the black might be too extreme for you ( just by seeing what you wear, that sort of thing) but the brown adds some contrast without being too outlandish. :)

Stephy
01-27-2009, 06:14 AM
Yeah. I had dyed my whole head black once, and everyone wanted me to go back to my natural blonde. They said I was too fair skinned for black and it made me look older. ;_;
Will you be doing the pink and black? 'Cause that would look really cool. Especially if you had your piercings in. I'd just worry about hair damage. I still need to get a good leave-in conditioner and start doing once a week hot-oil treatments to help out my hair. >_< No more hair dye for me! (For at least 4 months? ;x)
Firefly
01-27-2009, 06:20 AM
Yes, if I can convince the girl who does my hair to do it. She's super paranoid about me destroying my hair since I have such a bad history of bleaching and blue and orange and all other colors. Which is sort'f why I like the style of the chick I posted before; it would keep the bleaching to a minimum. Doing black over my brown wouldn't hurt it since dye itself isn't bad. It's the bleach that kills >_< I've been good since August (went back to brown that month) so...I hope I can do it.
EDIT: That girl actually has extensions in, her real hair stops about her shoulders. In interviews and stuff I've seen with her, she does it on purpose to get that look. @_@

What's the girls name in the first pic you linked (or is that the same girl in the second pic)? I have an urge to look up more about her 'cause she really stands out.

She uses a lot of extensions, and that costs too much money for me >_< Unnatural colors fade REALLY quick. Blue has sucked the worst so far, because it fades to an ugly green. Pink is the most forgiving, it'll fade but it'll stay pink and you can still generally get away with it.

I think the thing is that I need to be creative and start looking at what people are wearing / read magazines to get a sense of style. Usually i'm oblivious to such stuff unless it really pops out at me. I usually wear threadless style or band shirts with some AE jeans. I usually pop in AE, Aero, Hollister mostly. Sometimes Express for jeans but haven't had one that fit me within my price range yet.
I'm not one for Forever 21 / Wet Seal type of stuff since most people who shop there here are way skinny and are cheap trendy. I guess I'm more of a laid back type of fashion. I think I would like a cute / emo / indie / mod type of look. I don't want to dress like I'm going clubbing in Hollywood, but maybe like more like a music hipster/scenester. If that even makes any sense.
What I do lack are accessories, and that one link you pointed earlier with the the chain type bracelets and pendants is very nice. Reminds me of a more stylish non-expensive Tiffanys silver. XD
I think I could say a lot by mixing up belts, bracelets, and shoes. Which I probably need to pick up different types of sneakers and boots.
Also I like layering, I like the tank top / cami / button up shirt / polo type layering. But I also lack more "formal attire" ... but I'm probably the only girl in the universe that isn't fond of shoe shopping beyond sneakers and boots. I like wearing skirts and dresses but unless I pair it with a boot I'm usually lost on what type of "nice shoe" would look good on me.
But you are ultimately right, I just need to go out to malls and stores more often to just look, even if I don't buy anything.

My younger brother has a subscription to GQ and while I was in the states I started reading them. I do like a lot of the styles they have in there, specifically when it comes to formal attire. Ms. Autumn looks like something from Harajuku's golden days.
I think my big problem with fashion is that I go through too many phases. My ADD ends up being reflected in half-completed outfits and clothing in lots of different styles, so I often end up having half a closet full of clothes, but nothing that coordinates well enough to form a complete outfit. My styles aren't outlandish enough to just mix and match to get that coordinated-but-uncoordinated thing.

But, y'know..it's 80 degrees outside and you're wearing furboots with a miniskirt.

I don't think there's anything wrong with uggs when it comes to practicality. I'm sure they're warm. My Columbia parka is warm too, but I still wouldn't call it fashionable.
Of course there are more boot choices here in Minnesota, where we need them, than down south. Uggs aren't unique -- there are a ton of faux-fur-topped boots, and plenty of unadorned, shapeless boots...granted, most without the seams on the outside. I'm amazed that people can sell them at all.
....but then again, I feel the same way about crocs. I guess some fashions just aren't for everyone.

I keep my everday style simple. Jeans + a t-shirt. Its cold, a tank top + a long sleeve and a warm jacket. My shoes depends on what jeans i wear. I usually wear my pumas or my chucks. My hair depends to be wake up and go, I don't want to take the time to get up earlier to style it. Its only school. There's this pair of gray skinny jeans that I really want and am hoping that I will get for my birthday.
Uggs are hideous to me. Even more so when they wear them with shorts or a skirt. Its just ridiculous.
At home, I have a bunch of clothes to pick from should I want to change my look. Its awesome. Everything's pretty much bought on sale so I don't feel guilty having so much.

So, I know a lot of ppl shop American Apparel b/c it's sweat shop free. Even though Dov Charney, the creator, is pretty well known for harassing his employees.
But I thought you might like to know what else he says,
http://www.feministe.us/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/image_thumb2.png
The text of the above ad reads:
“Women initiate most domestic violence, yet out of a thousand cases of domestic violence, maybe one is involving a man. And this has made a victim of culture out of women.”
Shop where you want...just FYI.
While the poster isn't a "real" poster, but a manip, he did actually say those words and much, much more (http://www.mcgilldaily.com/view.php?aid=3253).

One of my former coworkers worked at American Apparel as a programmer. She said while the factory workers had it very good (they even got days off to protest), the office environment was very bad. Never got raises in 2 years, harsh environment, sexual harassment. I thought it was very interesting cause the roles were reversed (office treatment vs factory treatment).

Eshakti (http://www.eshakti.com/default.asp) is one of the most amazing e-shops out there.
They make BEAUTIFUL clothing, scarves, and jewelry.
And for $10 they'll tailor any clothing to your exact measurements! from very small to plus size, they do it all!
From the CEO
Something our customers might be interested to know is that we provide continuous employment with a good salary to a lot of skilled artisans. Our value chain extends at one end to our customers for whom what we offer is unique and beautiful and at the other end to our employees for whom their job at eShakti represents assured and much higher earning than what they would otherwise get. It might be important to reiterate here that we only employ those over 18 years of age and in fact most of our employees are over 21. Our work environment is the same across all personnel in the company and we work out of an air-conditioned space, one of the few of its kind in India.

Scene originated from a group of people typically called "Scenesters". basically, people who go to shows and parties for popular bands not for the music, but, for the "scene"...to be, well, seen. It's a really popular sub-culture in California, especially down south.

Speaking of tights, does anybody know where you can get sweater-knit tights for plus sizes? I'm in that between-sized of 14. I'm too small for most things at plus size stores, but can't seem to fit my thighs over any pair of sweater-knit tights that I've run across. The large sized tights always say 5'6"-6'0" and up to 195 lbs....I'm 5'6" and barely 170 lbs, and I can't get the stupid things up to save my life. And it's not just one brand, but two different pairs at two entirely unrelated stores.
Thinking they might have some wider sizes at plus sized stores, I looked at Lane Bryant, but they were either sold out or they don't carry sweater-knit tights at all. I don't know what else there is for plus sizes, since I've never really had to shop specifically for them before. Ideas, anyone?
Firefly
01-30-2009, 06:24 AM
I would check Torrid? They tend to run bigger sizes and would carry something like that. I wish I could fit into their stuff, a lot of it is SUPER cute. (Though expensive as well :/) Roxie probably will be better at this.

I don't know exactly what you mean by sweater-knit tights...However, Firefly is correct to direct you to www.torrid.com
They have supercute stuff from all sorts of labels for plus sizes
Here's their hosiery section (http://www.torrid.com/torrid/store/nodePage.jsp?sortType=1&prodType=4&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302036173&bmUID=1233297473402).
MNJetter

They're also called sweater tights, I think. Maybe they just sell them in northern states like Minnesota....they're tights, but made from like knit cotton or something, and not stretchy spandex or nylon. They're thicker and warmer than your standard stretchy tight, and since they're knit, they usually have some sort of texture pattern, like a sweater.
I didn't know torrid was a plus-sized store. I've seen it in the mall, but never been in one. I'll have to check them out. Thanks!

Rofl, I seriously never, ever wear that hat. I like my hair very much thank you sir. I was just goofing around the house; same with the jeans, just some beaters for lounging around. Though I generally don't really pay that much attention. Most of my jeans are darker though, I think my lighter ones are all torn up.

I thought of that, but I have really....how do I describe it....triangle-y shaped thighs. I'd call it an hourglass figure, but it's a little lumpier than an hourglass. :D Suffice it to say, I have yet to find a pair of thigh-high socks or stockings that stay up on their own. Maybe I'll have to invest in a pair of garter straps. :3

sparky: crocs while comfortable are some of the worst footware to be putting in an outfit when considering fashion-critical sense, especially for men. the reason for this is that their generally blunt and bulky shape coupled by premature 'sandal' termination at the heels makes it difficult for any pair of jeans to work well with; not to make you feel self conscious in this regard but they add excess 'weight' and rigidity to your bottom half. Lightweight hoodies seem to work well, though.
swede: I generally agree with ミュー but have to add that your coat is far too wide and while it might be the pose in the photo, your denim's legs could be as well. Ditch the hat. Add a scarf.

swede: I generally agree with ミュー but have to add that your coat is far too wide and while it might be the pose in the photo, your denim's legs could be as well. Ditch the hat. Add a scarf.
lol, again, the hat is for funzies. I don't wear it, and when I go out I'm almost always wearing a scarf and some fingerless gloves.
From the picture I agree with you about the jacket, but if I'm actually, you know, standing with proper posture, and not leaning back with my elbows sticking out and my shoulders hunched up and back, it doesn't look so bad.
The jeans, again, are just for around the house and such, my pants are generally not that loose. I am looking for new jeans though, so recommendations for that would be good. I'm not really looking to spend a whole hell of a lot more than 50 ish though. Not 200 in any case.
Something closer to this is kind of my standard winter gear, I lean more towards practicality. And the scarf has emotional value. Cause it's old :box:

Can we save the pretentious douche-baggery for the rest of the forum? Fashion is fun.
Speaking of pretentious douche-baggery, I walked into a Johnny Cupcakes today. I was not well dressed, as I was not expecting to really go out in public and look nice - also, I have to do laundry. But I saw a Johnny Cupcakes and thought "let's see what the shit this is about."
Immediately I was greeted with a look from a girl who worked there. She looked up and down at my attire and promptly decided to ignore me. Yay.
Anyways, Johnny Cupcakes is a pretty cool place, if you've never been. The designs are neat and try to have something to do with bakery. The whole place is set up like a bakery - the clothes are laid out on baking racks, and underwear is placed in these little plastic cases you would put cupcakes in. They even have this fake scent that, unless you knew better, smells like a bakery. I'm pretty sure there was a mixer too.
My only complaint with the store is that most of the clothing there is $35 and up. That's too much for me - the most I've spent on a shirt is $20, and that was a truly amazing shirt. I get most of my clothes for free for a reason.

o.o it's pretty! I love it. It does look like one of those glitter star sparkle things I see girls glue near their eyes or lids for special occasions. How long will healing take? After my belly piercing I was like NO MORE since healing took like 5 months for me >.< now I just tend to forget I even have a belly piercing :knockout:
Thanks! Two weeks O_O can you believe it? It's ridiculously easy to take care of and heal. It has a really low rejection rate and is better than the anti eyebrow piercing that people usually opt for instead (mostly because its cheaper and easier to take out/change). I like it this way instead, because it fits flat against my face, I only have one and the bar doesn't show through :]

I'm kinda tired of wearing brown, black and green coats all winter. Any tips on something more colourful to wear, these last couple of weeks of winter we have left?
Yeah, rub it in. Winter here in Minnesota still has a good two or three months to go.
Though it never occured to me before that that's why they start putting the spring lines out in department stores this early. It's not because they think people want to buy their clothes ahead of time, it's because it's actually becoming spring in other places. Heh.

Speaking of pretentious douche-baggery, I walked into a Johnny Cupcakes today.
Ack. I saw someone in a JC shirt today. So bland and unispired to me.
All of those boutique stores are like that though. That's why I don't visit any of them. I've never been into a JC store but I've heard they are cool. That's not nearly enough for me though.

The designs are all right. If someone got them to me for free, I'd probably wear them, but they aren't the greatest in the world. Definitely not worth what they're asking for.

w/ Rose photochromic, polarized lenses
I worked at the OP boutique and got these custom made with an out-of-production lens color, all of 60% off retail.
The photochromic bit sounds like a load of bullshit, but it really reduces the amount of refracted light that goes into your eyes. The rose tint also makes for every day feeling like you smoked a few bowls before disembarking.
I've been told I look like everything from movie star to absolute douche wearing them, but ultimately they are a wearer's sunglass and I don't feel like my $140 was a (total) waste.

Awesome suit, but your hair makes you look like you're about 12 years old, which gives the suit sort of a "ring bearer at his sister's wedding" effect. I'm pretty neutral on big sunglasses, and think they work on some people, but it increases the childlike effect in this case. I like their color, though.

They're prescription. Last time I got my glasses updated the store had a two for one sale, so I got my normal glasses with anti-glare coating and a pair of anti-UV sunglasses.
I wear them pretty much every time I go outside, even now- especially now, since sunlight reflecting off snow is just about literally blinding.
If I had a real camera I'd take a picture of me outside in my full get-up, I imagine it looks ridiculous- jeans, long sleeve shirt, long green Tommy Hilfiger coat (goes down to my knees), hood up, headphone wire extending up from inside the coat, and sunglasses.
Also; I definitely need a haircut.

Firstly, sorry for sounding like an ass several posts up. The family wasn't doing too well, and having exams didn't help in the least. Some friends and I won a huge 6 gallon tub of egg noodles so I'm way, way happier right now. And fatter.
==
Mew: Some pricey stuff, but good show. I think I've seen other pics that you posted and feel that you pull off your wardrobe well. I don't really get the looking-like-a-douche comments (sunglasses maybe? They look corporate I guess, esp in the first pic); 'rockstar wannabe' maybe, but he's clean and has a good cut to match. I'm liking it.
archdukezeb: I agree about the shirt patterns to an extent mainly because it's not easy for most people to pull it off, at least without looking like some high-rolling cheeseball.
JSL: I think that your glasses make your cheeks look bigger. I'm wouldn't be too sure about needing a hair cut; let it grow a little more before considering something a bit less 'sparse' looking. Put on your best and go somewhere that isn't $12/cut, ask questions. In this sense you're paying premium to learn what looks better on you so that when you DO go back to the 12/cut place, you can tell them exactly (or close enough, w/photo ref) of what you had.
Awesome suit, but your hair makes you look like you're about 12 years old, which gives the suit sort of a "ring bearer at his sister's wedding" effect.
Usually my hair is shorter, but I can't afford to get a haircut. You'd figure sleeping with a stylist would get you some better discounts but hey it's a nice place in Omotesando.

That's a bit of self-satire, honestly. I wasn't seriously trying to pull off that pose. Figured I'd do the whole "yeah I'm cool, fucker" look to go with the ego shades.
You need bigger sunglasses. Tiny sunglasses on a guy like you just make me think "oh no someone's going to get raaaped!"
I suggest these (http://www.eyegoodies.com/Tom-Ford-James-Bond-007-TF108-pr-16635.html) Tom Ford sunglasses as worn by Bond in Quantum of Solace. $350 is out of most people's price range, but maybe you can find something similar. Oliver Peoples makes a similar model that isn't quite as expensive.

I looked at the pictures and thought "woah, I look like a douche" myself after I took them and said so in the initial posting, so I guess it was to be expected. I actually went for the cheesy 80s disco look with these. I almost got some reflective gold lenses, but it was over the top.
The shirt pattern debate is one I've had with myself a million times. I finally started buying patterned shirts, and really it's a test of your matching sense. You can make a really individual look with one, but wrong accompaniment looks really trashy. I almost have to pre-plan outfits with this kind of shirt.
Next up on the chopping black:
70's style repro shirt (I have four of these in total, this was my 1st)
Giorgio Armani vest (circa 80's?)
A/X jeans
Lanvin en Bleu scarf

You might not have liked it Rox, but BP's sales were through the roof. So was J.LO's circa 1999. It might have been garbage but a lot of people were rocking both labels. I still think Kimora did it better than Bey though.

I don't own either, but I see them being sold everywhere, and it's odd 'cause I don't see many people wearing it. Could just be due to the weather though. I think I like them, but not sure if I'd wear them. Hm. I wanted a fashionable yellow scarf for a little while (because Latika from Slumdog Millionaire wore one), but haven't gotten one. Could get one pretty cheap with my Aeropostale employee discount though.

Oh my god, those two fashions are all over California. I thought it was pretty cute at first, but then everyone ( and I mean people of all types) started wearing them and that kinda turned me off. They're EVERYWHERE. I stick with my knitted long scarves. I like them better, they're warm in the cool mornings.

They've been in Japan for almost two years now. They remind me of those Japanese girls who look like they went through the department store, picked the clothes off three different mannequins, and put them all on at once. The scarves remind me of striped tights and ponytails in odd places, and the gladiator sandals remind me of gypsy skirts with T-shirts decorated with random English words that make no sense.

Yea, most fashions seem to start in Cali and spread to the rest of the US afterward, so I figured with how much I see them being sold everywhere (not many people are wearing it yet though) by Spring or Summer, I can imagine everyone wearing it. I think I won't even bother. They're sorta cute, but I can see myself being annoyed real quick. LIKE UGGS :@

This is for MNJetter or anyone who might know. Is there a site or off the top of your head where you can list Japanese bra sizes and match it up with American sizes? Thinking about getting a cute bra from an import site but worried to get the wrong size since it's listed in Japanese sizes.

Ladies, I wanted to bump this to tell ya if you need bras go to Kohls. Not sure if it's just a regional sale or across all Kohls. But what a steal..! I got 5 bras for 20.00 dollars. And they aren't falling apart, generic, ugly, or plain looking that you tend to see on clearance shelves. Very cute and pretty. Bargain!!
Oh and bought a pair of jeans for only $7.00 from there too. wtf!! How cheap! It was totally cute too. Was in their clearance racks. A tiny bit big since it's a 0, but heck... for $7.00 I'll deal with big.

Kohls usually has good clearance stuff. I have found pants for cheap cheap cheap but it is difficult to find ones in a large range of sizes.
I will try looking there for bras tomorrow, as I need new ones.

^Were you able to get the same deal, Nanashi? One of my bras from Kohls looked exactly like a Victoria Secret one, except mine was 4 dollars and the VS one was 30.00. :]
Can't let this thread go away ;x <3.
Just to let you ladies know and I guess maybe some of you guys would be interested (good girlfriend/mothers day gift perhaps?) NYX cosmetics are having 50-75% sales (http://www.cherryculture.com/index.php) going on for a limited time. Do you understand how much makeup you can get for cheap!? Some of their products are even comparable to MAC, but I'd say from all the reviews/swatches I have seen most of their products are like drugstore cosmetics such as CoverGirl, Maybelline, Neutrogena, Revlon, etc...
I'm not much of a makeup person. In fact, I have maybe 4 products and had these same 4 for like a year now and barely use it. [Way beyond its expired date ;x] But I wanna be pretty XD! Fighting myself on this one... To spend or not to spend? Might have to see if it is hypoallergenic.
Oh, and a Fashion question, I suppose. Anyone know where you can get cute shielded pumps, where the heel is actually shorter than 4 inches? I find a bunch but the heel is almost always over 4 inches. :meh:

I'm looking to buy some nice jeans for a not ridiculous amount of money. Something mostly casual, but not the kind of overly-worn or faded that can really only be worn very casually. I like my jeans to be fitted well, but not really in the skinny jean scenester sort of way. Any recommendations?
Also looking for some decent blazers and that kind of thing that I could kind of wear casually.
I've been getting into wearing Henley shirts recently too. I like em, though I don't see many people wearing them.

UniQlo, if you've got one near you. $50. Sometimes $30 or even $15 on clearance.

Make up is one thing I've found that, the brand/price actually CAN make a difference. Depending on what you're using. I only use eye make up and chapstick - I never use foundation or blush or anything else. (It makes me break out. Not wearing it makes my skin look nicer :D) So I can't speak in that area.
I use cheap lipgloss, I've used LipSmackers (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=3361542) since I was a little girl and I still love it and it's cheap :] Though, when I worked at Bath and Body works, I loved their lipgloss, and I got an employee discount ;(
As for eye make up, I believe that mascara's price doesn't matter, but brand does. I wouldn't pay more than 10 dollars for a tube of it. However, in terms of liner and shadow, I am willing to spend more money. I am in love with Smashbox and Urban Decay.

Seriously. My friend turned me onto MAC. It's a little pricier but I don't have that much and I don't wear it that often, so it really doesn't drain my budget much. At first I only had a MAC eyeshadow brush and liner, and my friend gave me a bunch of cheapie brushes to start. As I've been saving to buy better brushes and throwing away the cheapie ones, they REALLY make a difference.
Applies on smoother, more even, and stays better.
Unfortunately, something like cosmetics are really hard to get at a deal unless you have hookups to sample sales or parties. Once a year MAC will have like a 20% off sale and that is really worth it, but otherwise if you get into it, it's such a drain on your wallet!

Speaking of eye makeup, do any of you guys know where to find information on the internet with demos and stuff for how to put it on yourself? I feel a little silly saying this at 26 years old, but I've never used it before (I've worn it maybe 3 or 4 times in my life, twice put on by my mom, once by a professional makeup artist, and once by my sister). Now that I have a close-distance boyfriend for the first time in like five years, I find myself going on real dates and wanting to dress up and look a little more fancy than usual. I have no interest in foundation/blush/etc., because I have nice skin already. I have the lipstick thing down like a pro. But I've never bothered with eye makeup, and I want to give it a shot.

Swede, I like Levis jeans the most. Try on some 514s or 511s to see which fit you prefer. On me, 511s are straight but not too skinny, while 514s are a bit looser. But my legs are a bit thin so 511s could be too slim for you. Any Kohl's ought to have these jeans in stock, and they're usually new-looking. I don't like the faded/fake-worn-out thing either.
My dark blue Levis 510s are my favorite jeans I've ever owned. Really slim but not too tight, comfortable, and great looking.
I went to H&M today and got some cool new shirts and stuff for dirt cheap. I should take some pictures when I'm not feeling so lazy.

Man, I wish Uniqlo had more than just an NYC location in the US. I would totally get something from them. When I was in Japan last summer I visited one of their stores and liked what I saw.
Of course, I'll be going back this fall, but I would hope the crazed metropolis of Osaka has even better clothing to offer.

I hear Urban Decay is pretty good. I've only ever used Physicians formula for my fair sensitive skin (and 'cause I'm allergic. Hives are no fun ;'( .)

Honestly, I'm like a total idiot when it comes to make-up. I didn't even know how to apply eyeliner until recently. I've been hooked to Make-Up Gurus on Youtube. They're REALLY helpful. I've learned so much (although I haven't had the money, necessary product, and skill to apply that knowledge yet -.-) I'd recommend checking out my favorites: MichellePhan, xteeener, and panacea81. I'd say xsparkage too, but she has tutorials more on the dramatic (really stand out) side. Not everyday type make up. Her stuff is great though. Most of these girls also have awesome hair tutorials. :) Have fun~
Swede, I don't think you'll like my suggestion, but I work at Aeropostale and it's usually seen as mostly a young girl store, but we actually sell really nice jeans for guys of all ages. College guys buy from us all the time. I really like the jean styles there. They have skinny, bootcut, wide, and baggy. Prices tend to fall between 20.00-35.00 right now since they're on sale. They tend to have only three colors. Light blue, dark blue, and black.

YOUTUBE!
There are great make-up and hair tutorials on youtube for allllllll skin colors.. Here's one that might work (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G03kuZKWSGw) for you MNJ
Also, you can go to a make-up counter at a store and they can tell you what to use, how to apply, and they'll even do it for you on the spot.
