There's a campaign to get the Obama's Transition team to consider David Perry for the position of the new cabinet seat for Technology continues.

David will be on WBAI-FM in NYC today, January 7, 2009, on their computer program, 8 pm NYC time, 8 pm Pacific. You can listen live, and call in, like I will, to say that there's a grass roots movement to get the Obama campaign to consider him for the cabinet level technology position. You can listen to it live here — http://stream.wbai.org/

Former operator of Portland's Lighthouse Zen layperson Steve "Faddah" Yuetsu Wolf says:

So for 15 years now, I've been pals with David Perry of Trend Micro. David and I got to know each other while working at Symantec software together. Now, our new president-elect, Barack Obama, has said he wants to make a cabinet level position of technology czar, especially to increase broadband internet usage throughout the nation. I can think of no better person for this position than my pal, David Perry.

Yes, this is a blatant attempt to promote my pal into this position. The thing is, I can think of no one better to do the job.

Lawrence Lessing? Ach. Better suited as a legal advisor to the DOJ on technology crime & patent issues. Steve Ballmer? Puh-leez. We already had a madman in the United Nations Ambassador position who would scream at people and throw furniture. No, trust me on this — David Perry is the man for the job.

Perry is a leading voice and expert on computer network security and infrastructure world wide. He has been in the computer industry since the mid-1980s, and currently speaks world-wide to everything from user groups to conventions like RSA or Black Hat, to press, radio and television on issues of computer networking security. He has been called in to advise our nation's intelligence computer, presidential advisors, the pentagon and the DOD on issues of computer network security. During the year 2000, he was one of the team in Bill Clinton's White House monitoring world-wide in case of any problems due to Y2K. He is well known for the depth and breadth of his understanding on modern technology issues, and most of all for being able to take such complex subjects and explain them in layman's terms. He also hosts the yearly "computer security geeks bar-b-que" at his home, where he invites industry competitors and best minds in computer security, including members of our nation's intelligence community, such as the FBI, to share information in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

I have personally known David Perry since 1993, so 15 years. We worked together at Symantec, Inc. David then went on to other companies — Network Associates, and then Cybermedia, before his current position at Trend Micro. We have stayed in touch over the year and visited each other as close friends and computer industry associates.

Oh, and yes — he's all platform friendly. Especially Mac. He loves his iPhone and has an iMac to catalog most of his media in his entertainment room at home.

I ask that you go to this site here and join me in nominating David Perry as President-Elect Obama's head of technology policy. —

This site has no binding power on Mr. Obama's choices, but can be a resource for the pool from which he chooses. The deadline to nominate is this Friday. And yes, please forward this to anyone you think would support it. Thanks

Coin what?

Like many lofty titles, e.g. Mogul, Tsar or Czar has been used as a metaphor for positions of high authority, in English since 1866 (referring to U.S. President Andrew Johnson), with a connotation of dictatorial powers and style, fitting since "Autocrat" was an official title of the Russian Emperor (informally referred to as 'the Tsar').

In the United States the title "czar" is a slang term for certain high-level civil servants, such as the "drug czar" for the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, "terrorism czar" for a Presidential advisor on terrorism policy, "cybersecurity czar" for the highest-ranking Department of Homeland Security official on computer security and information security policy, and "war czar" to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The earliest known usage of the term was for Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who was named commissioner of baseball, with broad powers to clean up the sport after it had been dirtied by the Black Sox scandal of 1919.[22]

The govt should have 0 hand in anything relating to technology. No one IN government has a fucking clue, and most of the people i know that think they know jack about technology these days seem to just say whatever is popular. MS is bad, Google/Apple are good. Open Source is the best.

The only way i'd ever want a guy in govt in power, is if he actually bothered to look into the application of a technology, and not just whatever stupid shit is cool this month.

Also, though its where the job path is for comp security, Fuck Anti-Virus companies. When they EVER make a proactive product, rather than a reactive one (Damn near impossible btw), then i'll think of them as more than scum.

Also, no slight intended on the dude as a person, hell if i know how he actually thinks.
