Haha, he says she wasn't built for sex, but I strangely feel that's a lie seeing how she has female parts, looks childlike yet is in her "20's" (the child look is a bit creepy), thin figure, and was practically built from a sex doll and mentions quickly how he could redesign "to simulate her having an orgasm.”
He said: “Aiko doesn’t need holidays, food or rest, and will work almost 24 hours a day. She is the perfect woman.”
XD I'll hold back and won't rant about how I feel a lot of this is sexist BS and a little creepy, but thought to link it and let you see what a perfect wife this man has created :).

The day the Japanese and/or Koreans perfect the she-bot is the day humanity comes to a screeching halt. What guy is going to want to chase after real women inferior to the perfect one he can just buy? Let's keep our fingers crossed and pray that day never comes. If for no other reason than for the sake of the human race...

Here is the official website of the project: http://www.projectaiko.com/
What's really cool is how he designed the robotic hands. You can basically strap a wrap filled with sensors around your for-arm or upper-arm and the muscle movements from your arm will transfer to actual hand movements to the robotic hand. Video of that here: http://www.projectaiko.com/video.html

Why guy is going to want to chase after real women
Um... not that I'm good at the chase... but... me, and probably quite a few other sane men looking for more than a fuck toy.
EDIT: Not having read the link (at work) I'll go in to a bit of detail, yeah I've seen Stepford Wives. I know this probably isn't close to that, and supposedly isn't built for sex (yet) but either way, that is the sole purpose, regardless of what the creator says. No matter how "good" these dolls get, you won't form an actual relationship with them. Share actual moments in your life with another human being that doesn't want anything more than to spend their time with you. It's all we have, and it's short. If you think this doll can replace that experience, you need mental help. Being someone who lives majorily by themselves is one thing, relationships aren't for everyone, but to want that connection, and seek it from something like this... is just wrong.

Yes, but at some point, there will be someone's brain that gets transplanted into something like this. Then what?

This is great if you need a therapeutic relationship as there as friendless folk out there. Some like substitutes, and the real is too risky to their egos. The inventor will never get a date again.

I don't think the inventor ever had a date to begin with...

That robot has undoubtedly been used for sexual purposes. That guy isn't fooling anyone. I suggest he mass produce them and sell them to love hotels for lonely guys with cash to spend on the 'deluxe package'.

Indeed but the story was also picked up by the Toronto Star (http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/552049), which isn't, because the inventor's Canadian.
The comments make for an interesting read. There is the skepticism there too and some people are also creeped out but many people are supportive of the guy.

This made me cringe:
"Aiko – which means love child in Japanese ..."
How is the meaning of a completely typical name in Japan relevant at all? Millions of Japanese couples can name their kids Aiko, but when some guy names his robot that it becomes newsworthy ...
(Oh and in before someone points out the fact that they already made an anime about this.)

If the inventor is from Canada, why is this in All Things Japan? You dirty racist, Steph.
Anyway, while it does sound creepy, it's always interesting to me when things like this come out because robotics is something I wish I could do (I want to make a real life Wall-E ;[ ) but I probably couldn't without taking years to learn all the math and physics behind building them.
Even though it's probably just going to be used as a sex robot, the fact that it can "react to being tickled or touched," "[recognize] faces and [speak] 13,000 sentences" is very impressive. Hell, if I was rich, I'd buy one if it didn't come in a creepy ass humanoid form. I'd prefer an actual C-3PO (which is technically humanoid, but not all fleshy) and then I'd be like "Let's go into hyper drive" and he'd be like "OH NO!!!" and I'd be like "loljkz, buddy."
Too bad all the robots I try to befriend end up turning into horrible racists. :( Smarterchild... SMARTERCHILD!!!

I'm sure the guy just bought that doll because it was easier than making one, which allowed him to focus spend more time on his research and development, instead of trying to fix a doll from scratch. There probably weren't any male dolls available for purchase, so he had to resort to purchasing a female one. I'm just giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I'm probably wrong...like always.

There was this movie called Lars and the Real Girl (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805564/) starring Ryan Gosling. It's about this guy who's parents have passed away, leaving him and his brother to inherit the family house. However, Lars decides to sleep in the garage/shed, which is disconnected form the main house because he feels that he would be intruding on his brother and brother's girlfriend, whom is living in the house as well.
Lars is pretty much a quiet loner, and oversees his co-worker looking at this site called (realdoll.com (NSFW naked dolls): this is a real business's website). Then one day he surprises his brother and brother's girlfriend, with one the doll that he bought from that site.
The interesting thing about the story is the whole town (small place) and the people all goes along with Lars as if the doll his REAL living girlfriend.
NO this is not a movie about the guy boning the doll, there isn't anything even hinting that he boned the doll throughout the entire movie.

Oopsy. Sorry Joey. Someone can move it then. I mostly saw what the robot was wearing and it looked sweet lolita like, which I generally see in Japan, so I right away related it to Japan.
Lars and the Real Girl is actually a really good movie and would recommend it to anyone.

A few years back, someone posted a link to a documentary on sex dolls. I think it was called something like Guys & Dolls. I don't remember much except that it was very creepy.
I found the link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3710987618964917848&pr=goog-sl
I just find it funny that Vietnamese-Canadian guy builds Japanese female robot. Globalism in action?
Why are people so freaked out about robots and sex, anyhow? Millions of guys and girls have been employing anything and everything to get off for centuries. Honestly, I respect him for doing it. If loneliness helps him create something that advances technology, then so be it. Greed and power create so much of what has been developed in this world, and that hardly hits the papers. Fuck those magazines and their snide comments.
The people talking about robots for prostitution are not looking at the economic side of it. Will it become a novelty? Yes. But robots are expensive! Hoes will be cheaper for the foreseeable future.

Even imaginary girl friends are better if they're Japanese? Didn't we see a Klingon speaking "starfleet uniform"-wearing Violent AJ clone with a non-robotic version. - a RealDoll™ with more exaggerated 'Anime' Asian features? He was all over the news about 2 years ago.

I bet one of my college frat-brothers would like one - he popped a blow-up doll!
Besides, while the guy may or may not use the Stepford gf to get off (hasn't anyone seen AI?), any techniques or programs he develops would be useful in not only robotics, but possibly prosthetics as well.
btw, that dude in the RealDoll video, Davecat(?), is in serious need of a reality check. "Shi-chan and I just gaze at each other"... "When she first came, it was just sex, sex, sex, but now that has kind of tapered off and we spend time looking at each other"... He's started to think she's real.

Hey guys, those guys with dolls seem happy, so way can't we just be happy for them. Just because they have a superficial relationship with their dolls doesn't doesn't make them less of a person, but a person who is able to adapt to a differnt lifestyle.
Also, that video is kind of one sided b/c they make male dolls as well and they didn't interview women who have male dolls or gays who have dolls of the same gender.

I feel pretty bad for people with real dolls. I saw that documentary when whoever originally posted it originally posted it. Some of the people are just lonely and feel as if they don't have a chance with real women. At least they're still boning things that look like real people instead of the guy who called in asking for a "Real Dog."
You just have to kind of wonder, though, what the fuck happened to them that made them such... well, losers. No offense to them because I do take sympathy with them, but it's genuinely sad. Having little to no connection with the real world because they're either shunned from it or feel shunned from it. It's easy to go "MAN UP, MAN." but usually there's a lot more to it than just "Lol I'm scared of talking to women and I have to fuck this fake doll." Some people just didn't develop basic social skills early on and it's a shame that it's so hard to develop them as an adult because when you can barely talk to your family due to shyness, it's near impossible to talk to strangers.
Anyway, the Aiko bot thing. Shit's really impressive in action. Wow.
SlickWilly440
12-14-2008, 08:13 AM
Yeah, Aiko is pretty cool. Now all that guy has to do is make a movable arm that can go up and down with that hand, and he'll be getting sponsorship left and right.
Also those Real Dolls are expensive, like 6 to 7 thousand dollsars, and that's just a standard doll. Adding in additional costs like clothing, accessories, maitenance items, shipping, etc and that is probably close if not over 10k.

Are you talking about Aiko's creator, or the guy on the documentary who had Shi-chan? He was the only one I could see who seemed really interested in the Japanese stuff, except maybe that crazy guy with the guns who had a poster. The dolls are made in California by Americans, and in the majority of cases the documentary used, the doll owners had nothing to do with Japan.

I remember reading about this in the Chinese newspaper several days ago. Well, my tutor was reading it and told me about it. Anyways, this is such a great advancement. Just imagine the possibilities. Parents could easily solve babysitting, STD rates might go down, you could protect your house while you're away, an extra driver if you're tired, a lot of things. I was really impressed by the demo. I would love to have an extra traveling buddy when I go somewhere. Having a robot friend would be cool...just as long as you know that it's still a robot and don't abandon your real friends too.
That reminds me, I want to read the rest of Chobits.

SlickWilly440

Why would you assume this?
I would assume this because when you see a man that age with no girlfriend/wife in site you start to wonder what he does when he is all alone with himself with that doll, in the complete privacy of his living quarters. I mean, he could be lying for all we know, but curiosity usually gets the best of us when we are all alone and we tend to do things that we normally won't want to tell anyone else....boning a doll would probably be one of them.
Oh yeah, those dolls have 3 penetration points, through the mouth, khooch, and back-door. He might be saying that Aiko is a virgin in the sense that the khooch has not been compromised, but the mouth and back-door probably have been.

Perhaps he has...I'm not ruling out the possibility, but I'd give this person the benefit of the doubt...especially since I don't know him personally. Maybe it's just me, but I usually take people that I don't know for their word when they tell me something like that is quite simple and works within the boundaries of conventional logic...especially if there isn't any super obvious reason to doubt their word.

He built the thing from a sex doll apparently. If that is the case, you'd be blaming someone for something they didn't do. Regardless, there isn't any problem making something as life-like as possible in every reasonable phase.

Touche. However, IMO it's pretty reasonable to assume he did. I mean, I have fairly regular physical encounters with the opposite sex and I would at least get a handjob from it, and he's the nerdy, intellectual type that doesn't tend to do great with women.

I'm not saying that there aren't gross people who like Japanese culture. Just that Japanophilia doesn't have the monopoly on gross people. They exist in every walk of life, in every hobby. There are fat, disgusting, loud, crass football players who would give the worst of anime fans a run for their money. I mean, even within the realm of the realdolls documentary, I think I was more weirded out by the guy who owned like 15 dolls and had nothing to do with Japanese culture than by the Japanophile. The Japanophile was pitiable, whereas the other guy was just creepy, and appeared to have no other hobby.
