Welcome to Operation Silhouette! Phase 2 http://hotimg16.fotki.com/a/69_232/235_215/sexysilhouette.jpg (http://hotimg16.fotki.com/p/a/69_232/235_215/sexysilhouette.jpg)

This is a second-chance 6-week challenge for those who want to redirect anxiety and negativity into taking care of themselves through health and fitness. If you aren't willing to commit to getting healthier don't join! So far I plan on only doing 2 phases for those who aren't at their target weight and/or fitness. I hope to post my own progress pics if I continue to do well in this challenge.

Young or old, male or female welcome

Goal: To help you develop positive habits that will last for the rest of your life. The initial phase will focus on dropping at a minimum 10lbs of fat OR gaining at least 3lbs of lean muscle.

You will need to post or IM me (if you're the shy type) your weekly goals.

Set weekly goals for what you will do EVERYDAY for better health and fitness.

Weekly Health Goal
Weekly Nutrition Goal
Weekly Exercise Goal
Weekly Attitude Goal

UPDATE** Weekly weigh-ins will be on Mondays, PM me before 12 am PST.

There is no set diet plan, do what works for you.

**The challenge does not begin until Dec.28** I realize this is an inconvenient time but this is the time we need to be focused on getting healthy instead of making last minute new year's resolutions!

Here's what you need to do:

1. PM me if you want to join and I will post a complete list of members on MONDAY 12/22. Let me know if you plan on dropping fat or gaining muscle.

2. Take measurements by tape, weight (lbs or kg), Post them if comfortable or IM them to me.

3. Optional: Calculate BMI ( This formula does not take into account lean muscle mass to fat ratios thereby causing a higher BMI)

4. Optional: Take a "before" picture of yourself and post it here. No nudes you perve.

i have a question.

what if we are already at optimal fitness and health? i do the prep-workout for qualifying into Special Forces. 200 pushups in as little sets (i can do it in 2 easily), 200 sit-ups/leglifts/bicyclesitups (i can do it in 2), and running two miles in less than 12 minutes (i can run it in 10). aside from that, i train in muay thai and krav maga. i look/perform like a goddamn machine, keep a positive outlook(though realistic), and i eat well. i've reached an equilibrium for athleticism for me. where does your challenge take me? more reps per set? i'm not saying i have no room for improvement, not at all, im wondering if it would be more of a conflict than an aid for my lifestyle to unsettle my current balance and go any further.

So I think you just answered your question. Good for you and what you've attained but obviously this challenge is for people who need more improvement in these areas.

I'm in again. Just went ice skating yesterday and worked out on Sunday.

Ice skating kicked my butt. Ugh I'm so sore. I didn't fall or anything, I'm pretty good in fact, but I was being a bit of a show off and doing a lot of speed skating and tricks. I'm paying for it now.

edit: I gained weight O.o

Went from 91 to 94lbs. Exercising made me gain weight! o.o

I'm not sure If it was assumed or not, but I was intending to continue on from phase 1, I'll be posting goals later today, rather than on the mondays as I had been doing and i'll have weight updates/measurement changes on each monday. This way I have my goals set before I get up instead of selecting them on the day.

Also, well done Stephy on your weight gain, I've always wanted to try ice skating, if I find a rink somewhere near I might try it as part of a fitness goal, it seems fun. :)

EDIT - I was gonna post goals last night (it's now 6:56am) unfortunately my 1hr nap at 8pm lasted until 3am so I'll post em now and update my stats likely end of today or tomorrow since i'm gonna be a bit busy today.

Week 1 goals!
Health - High fibre diet. At the end of the last one i opted for this and tried it out a few days, I'm not sure how well it's affecting me in general, but as a solid basis, it should help prevent bowel cancer and such, so i'll try it properly anyway and see how I feel after it.
Nutrition - Eggs. 2 per day, essential fatty acids all thrown in together.
Exercise - 10 mins cardio per day, plus as many squats and situps as I can manage.
Attitude - Gonna try to have more fun and be more spontaneous this week, less being miserable.

And now i'm going out on my bike for my cardo!

Rear Admiral Grapefruit

Update - my weight is 182lbs, and measurements are unchanged, or if they are, by so little it's not measurable on a scale of half centimeters.

Also bump. :P

I'm not sure what everyone else is doing Stephy but I see no reason we can't continue ourselves till the rest join in.

This whole christmas time thing has been bad for me, largely because when it comes to christmas food, I feel bad if I don't eat it after someone's put a lot of effort into the meal, combined with the fact I had one at home with my mum and one with my dad on christmas eve, then all those chocolates people give you over christmas *sigh* on the plus side, I still managed my health and nutrition goals around this food and except on christmas eve I was busy shopping for everyones stuff I didn't do my exercise goal. In terms on spontaneity I went bowling on saturday with friends and my sister, always good fun and... that's it :P

Ok, the bad news is 185lbs, 3lbs gain is very bad, I know, but there's a lot of food in me still and there's no other week of the year I'd have to eat so much. :X

New Goals -

Health - Water - 2litres a day. Stopped that a while a go but it's good for my brain so I'm doing it again even if it means i am peeing every 5 minutes.
Nutrition - Grape and nuts - Between meals I'm going to carry a bag of grapes and dried fruit and nuts to snack on instead of crappy chocolates. Weird thing is I actually like raisins and similar dried fruit more than i like chocolate, the texture of it as well as the sweet taste.
Exercise - I'm going to continue with squats for my legs and I'm gonna try to exercise every muscle group with my free weights at home on alternating days.
Attitude - Positivity, I'll try to turn anything bad into something good, clouds and silver lining and all that.

Stephy

Guess we'll just have to motivate one another. I emailed Olive to see if she forgot us.

Oh, and I am with you on the Christmas and the food and all the badness :x I was very bad this week with the holidays. I ate lots of chocolates and sweets given to me and did very little exercise.

I have a new goal! I have a pair of jeans I bought last year that I really love, however, I have never worn them. Why? Well, simple! I am too thin for them ;'( They're a size 00, but the size so lies! It fits like a size 1 O.o. My goal is to fit into them properly. Once I have achieved this, ideally, I will be at my optimum weight and body shape.

---
Goals set for entire project:
Health: Women One a Day Vitamin. About 4-6 cups of water a day.
Nutrition: Stay away from the chocolates -.-. Stay away from processed foods. Eat more organic fruit/veggie goodness. Start moving onto a vegetarian diet. Attempt to eat three-four meals a day because of diet change.
Exercise: Interchangeable crunches, squats, lunges, stretches, modified push ups. 10-50 minutes each day. Stretches before bedtime.

Heh Steph, you look fine, I think you'd need some decent muscle gain if you're gonna fit bigger jeans comfortably though without gaining cheeseburger weight, you do seem to be quite a small girl though and not a bit of fat anywhere on you.

I'm not sure exactly, but you may need to try something like weighted squats with some light free weights and calf raises for the calves to build muscle in both areas. I've just been having a bit of a look around for some sites this (http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts/l/bllowerbody2.htm) seems to have a lot of decent leg exercises, I may try a few myself.

I use weights once in a great while for squats. I need to get lighter weights though. I don't use weights often since I am afraid of getting muscle! I just wanna tone and gain weight. I think I want to gain weight. No. I don't... but I do, since I want curves. @_@

If your bone structure is that thin and you're naturally light, you're probably not going to be able to gain good weight without putting on muscle. That's OK; muscle is good. Even for those of us guys who prefer women on the more waifish end of the spectrum, a bit of a muscle and tone is always a good thing.

If you just put on weight without weight training, some of that weight will undoubtedly go to the right places, but it's almost certain to be accompanied by flab. It is, to be sure, possible that you are so skinny right now that the intake of some extra calories will naturally go towards putting muscle on your frame because you're not currently getting enough calories to build all the natural muscle that your genes are programmed to create. But I wouldn't bank on that.

Anyway, there's no need to worry about getting huge and muscular from weight training. It won't happen unless you spend hours and hours lifting heavy, and that's not something you can do by accident.

Unless you really work towards bulking up, you will not look mannish. And a woman with some tone looks just awesome.

Stephy
01-05-2009, 09:41 PM
Yeah, I'm naturally thin, Hikoku-Y, my highest weight ever was 99-100lbs and that didn't last long. I tone too easily so that's why I was worried about putting on muscle. I could do 10 sits ups a day for a week and you could see my tummy be all toned up that fast. It's weird. My legs are probably the only thing that takes forever to tone, which is why I use weights once in a while for lunges and squats, but then my arms get all toned and they look a little muscley because I'm so skinny they just kind of pop out. I need lighter weights. I use 10lbs in each hand and it's too much for me! I need like 2lbs in each hand.

I'm starting to think the only way I'll pick up weight is if I go on the birth control pill, which I hear weight gain is a common side effect, but I don't trust/scared of pills. *ironic future nurse in training*

I whine too much. :P

Anyway, this week hasn't been the best for me. I came down with the flu, and have been sick in bed for a few days. Feeling a little bit better, but still fatigued and my throat is sore. So I did no exercise this week T_T. I didn't eat much either. Lack of appetite when I'm sick. I did have lots of soup though! Mmm mm good~

Sorry to hear you've not been well Stephy, I hope you're feeling better soon enough and can get back into this. If you need lighter weights, it might be worth just buying a couple bags of sugar, it might seem silly, but it's pretty cheap and I think you can get a bag of sugar around 1kg in weight, ideal for what you want.

This week went ok for me, I didn't eat exactly well, but the crap I ate, I ate in small amounts, as well as doing weights I got out and did some more walking too, I really wanted to undo last weeks weight gain, I did stick to my replace crap with raisins and nuts etc thing but I'm hooked on em and just ate them really quickly then ran out later in the week.

My weight this morning was 183lbs, which is down 2lbs, which is decent enough and back on the right track. This week I believe my swimming pool will be back open and I can resume my business in there.

goals -

Swimming 2-3times, plus squats, not simultaneously though :P I find the breast stroke great exercise for my arms even if I do have poor co-ordination in moving my legs at the same time as I do that.

2-3 portions of fish - omega 3, protein, low cholesterol etc, should be healthier than delicious gammon joints. :P

More water. Haven't been getting enough, so with renewed vigour, onward with the water fetish.

Attitude - I'm gonna need more time to think of one for this, I've been struggling to come up with things for this lately, i'll try to come up with something and edit this post then.

Oh, welcome back Olive, I hope you're feeling a lot better now and more so soon enough, I don't think you need to worry about catching up since everyone has been a bit lax over the holidays, but now it's business as usual again, just in time for your return. :)

Yeah, being sick is the worst thing when you are trying to work out!! The best thing to do is rest, drink a lot (of water) and maybe do some walking just to get some fresh air and move around a bit. I wouldn't do any more exercise than that until you feel at least 75%.

Stephy, muscley is OK. Some people are just thin and show muscle more. Nothing wrong with that. It only becomes a problem for women when they work out a ton and start to really bulk up, especially in the arm and shoulder areas and somehow I don't see you working that hard. And there's no reason to do something you are opposed to just for your looks. If you don't like taking pills don't!

Get better, Olive. I am just recovering from my flu, so I went and did 30 minutes of exercise right after I woke up today and felt like I was dying afterward. Maybe I should wait a little longer before I start exercising again. Haha. I even fell down. >.> edit: but the machine said I burned nearly 300 cals. It was a bit strenuous.

I want to keep my calves thin, but it seems impossible with any workout I want to do for my hamstrings and gluteal. Did extra stretches to try and lengthen/thin out the bulky look to them. >.< bleh.

Relentless
01-07-2009, 03:46 AM
Stephy: if you want to simply stay thin, cardio is what you want to focus on mostly. attached weights (ankle, wrist. nothing marginally heavy) if you want. if you want to stay thin, get stronger, but not build much muscle mass, isometrics is great for that. there are drawbacks, though: the position you focus on for exercising a muscle, strength will mostly be developed at that angle/point/position, or so i hear. also, isometrics can raise your blood pressure. the benefits are that it makes you very strong (though limited) and quick.

RAG: smaller portions is good, but eat to fill yourself. best way to do this is by grazing. eat throughout your day. breakfast is key (the more you eat for breakfast, the less inclined you will be to eat more for other meals).

i came down with some freakish sickness as well. i tried to stay with my regimen throughout, but that was hard. i was dead-exhausted. but now i'm back up to about 95% i'd say. winter break has dulled my mental edge, too. a problem easily solved.

Did extra stretches to try and lengthen/thin out the bulky look to them. >.< bleh.Do leg curls and extensions on machines, or get some exercise bands you can hook under your door. This will let you isolate the upper leg without building the calves (but I think the sexiest lady's legs have well-muscled calves that are in proportion to the thighs).

And speaking of ladies and muscle growth: when I was running a health club, I learned that ladies will add an average 1 cm muscle mass to their calves, maybe 2 to the thighs, and maybe 1 to the biceps if lifting in a circuit. Unless they use special diets, extreme programs, or have extraordinary genetics, that means that most women will end up smaller after weight loss than they started, even with muscle gain.

What muscle growth will do for you, being naturally thin, is give you a more rounded, curvier look. But unless you work out 2 hrs/day like Madonna, you won't get bulk like she has. Your muscles will be visible, however, since your body fat is reasonably low. Make an effort to eat well, and your body should become smoother, too.

Double post!

Been busy today and was in a rush this morning so I couldn't weigh myself before I needed to eat, so I'll weigh in tomorrow morning so I can keep my measurements consistent.

Generally, this week was a bit, meh, not outstanding but not particularly bad besides eating a sticky toffee muffin and a brownie. :P

TBH, I've been struggling lately because of my jaw locking up and pains as well as cracking in my skull shooting pains down, making it almost impossible for me to sleep, however I lie, side, back, stomach the pressure on any part of my head seems to hurt my jaw so my lack of sleep is wearing me down.

This weeks goals aren't much, but I need to accommodate the fact that I'm feeling I want to give up for lack of rest.
Exercise - walking - 4 hours + of recreational walking. + swimming as and when I can.
Health - vitamins and water, still not getting enough water, even though i keep saying I will.
Nutrition - fruit juice - 1 glass a day and 1 glass of skimmed milk.
Attitude - perseverance - not gonna give up on anything, dentist on wednesday, maybe they can help me out.

Edit - weight - 183lbs - same :P

Weight this afternoon - 180.8lbs! my morning weight before eating should therefore be lower than that, meaning just over 2lbs lost this week.

I haven't eaten much this week compared to previous weeks and instead of taking the bus around I've just been walking to where I need to get to.

TBH i've been running out of goals to set for each thing, so I'm hoping perhaps if possible, this week, I'd prefare to set a general weight loss goal applying aspects of what I've done so far in this challenge phases 1 and 2 and I'd like to set a target of 3lbs dropped for next monday now that i'm getting things going back in the right direction.

I'm going to update tomorrow, when i weighed today the weight was somewhat skewed by the fact that for the last week and for reasons unknown I have (at the risk of giving out TMI) *ahem* not defecated, at least not until this afternoon after I started loading up on fibre on the weekend. Weight today was 182.2, now that the cogs and wheels are turning again i'll weigh properly tomorrow. :P

Um, I've been doing mostly crunches and then stretches to improve my flexibility. I'm improving much more quicker than I thought I would. I guess stretching while watching Korean dramas is a good thing~

I've gotten back into my bad habit again. Binging on one huge meal until I feel so full I might throw up (I never do though) and then not eating the rest of the day... Need to get out of that quickly.

Rear Admiral Grapefruit

It might help to plan your meals in advance stephy, if you decide what you're gonna eat and when and have it ready before it may help avoid doing that.

I'm rather disappointed, my weight this morning was still 182 and I put a lot of time and energy into being active last week and was hoping even if I didn't reach my goal, I might at least lose a 1lb or not gain at least. The only good thing is I'm noticing my legs strengthening nicely, the muscle definition in my calves has improved and they don't hurt at all from walking 2hrs now, plus my dog's slimmed down too :P

Also, having said that, I've also been eating sugar again, every time my family prepares to try their on and off dieting they buy chocolate and crap in to enjoy just before it starts and I just can't resist a bar of galaxy hazelnut (http://www.thechocolatereview.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/2008-05-08-46357.jpg) :P

This week I guess I just keep at it, no sugar now and just see if my weight can gradually decrease, I'd like to lose 3lbs this week, but that may be overly optimistic, I'm just gonna load up on fibre, fish and lean meats and veg, see where I end up while exercising too.

Stephy
01-28-2009, 04:18 AM
>_< Ah.. That sucks. Don't let it get you down, and just use it as more motivation (and stay away from those refined sugars!). It's a reason I don't buy a scale. I know I'll be let down constantly. I will wait until I feel my body physically seems to my standards and then let the numbers be figured and just shrug if off if I don't like them, since physically I will like the results.

I haven't consumed any sugar for like 4-5 days. I am shocked! So today I am treating myself to some chocolate and ice cream. I deserve it for being such a good girl and earlier today I did 15 minutes of hardcore cardio, so it's all good. The cardio made me feel like I was dying though >.>

If you want a lot of fibre I say try eating Kellogg 'All Bran' or General Mills 'Fiber One' for breakfast! Very little to no sugar and lots of fibre! Make sure you drink lots of water. They taste yummy too :3.

Thankfully, that kind of food has never really appealed to me. I'm more a salty junk-food freak, actually; I eat chocolate maybe 5 times/year.

So, I just finished making a cable-crossover station in my storage room, which I'm converting into a home gym. I've also started the eat/stop/eat method, fasting from dinner Tues to dinner Wed, the same Thurs-Fri. It's actually very easy to fast 24 hours like that, and it hasn't caused my metabolism to slow down the way reduced calorie diets do.

If you've recently increased your exercise, some temporary inability to lose weight is probably because of muscle gain, especially for men. One pound of muscle is really not a lot of volume, so if you can actually see development happening, you're probably putting on at least 5 lbs or so over your whole body. I've heard that some people can even gain 10+ in muscle weight, but that's for people who were seriously out of shape before starting their exercise program.

I just wanted to post to mention that I am going to have to leave this for a while, last week was going ok but due "domestic" issues mid-week i've had to move out so until I sort things out, I can't even concentrate on this, i'm just eating crap and doing crap till I can sort things out.

Good Luck to everyone else, I hope you all do well in achieving your goals.

I hope everything works out ok for you. Whatever the domestic issue, please take care of yourself and try not to give up by eating bad food. I went through a similar issue and ended up gainiing 30 pounds which didn't help my self-image after all that. Hope you'll come back soon as your my cheerleader!

Yeah, it is actually a better time than ever to concentrate on your health. Unless you are just totally strapped for time, working out can give you some stability in terms of schedule and daily routine. It can sure help with the stress anyway. Well, regardless, I hope everything works out for you.

So how's everyone doing? I'm finally losing some weight as hopefully I can post a pic in a few more weeks. My portions are smaller as I'm not stretching my stomach out by eating too much or feeling like I have to clean my plate.

Stephy: How's the strength training going? I'm working out with weights and doing cardio and I can tell my abs are getting more defined as well as my deltoids. Since muscle weighs more than fat I haven't weighed myself but my inches have decreased significantly.

Good to hear you're losing weight! Haven't done any of the sort lately. Been busy. I moved. Again :x...

Almost done unpacking. I'll have to think up a new way to work out, since before I has access to a free gym with my housing complex. Might have to stick to crunches and squats and indoor 10 minute cardio for now.

I am getting yummy home cooked meals now :3 My tummy is most pleased. My portions are perfect. I'm not pigging out or eating too little anymore. Right at a good medium.

It sounds like you feel like you should be beating people up on the first lesson instead of learning techniques that teach you how the body works. Perhaps you are looking for fighting lessons instead of self defense.
